Carrier dynamics of CdS/MoS2 heterostructure nanocrystal films affected by annealing effect

Lou Xue,Yao Lianfei,Wang Liangyu,Chi Xiaochun,Wang Wenyan,Sui Ning,Zhang Hanzhuang,Xu Wen,Pan Lingyun,Zhou Qiang,Wang Yinghui

2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) nanocrystals and related semiconductor–metal heterostructures are promising new materials for efficient opto-electrical conversion because of their unique physical and chemical properties. The design and optimization of such materials require the understanding of exciton and charge carrier dynamics. The illumination-dependent carrier dynamics of CdS/MoS 2 heterostructure nanocrystals (CdS/MoS 2 HNCs) film is investigated by employing the voltage-current test, in which the CdS nanocrystals (NCs) film is used as a reference. The photocurrent performance of carriers in the CdS/MoS 2 HNCs is 70 times higher than that in CdS NC film, owing to the excellent interfacial hole transfer from the CdS component to the monolayer MoS 2 in CdS/MoS 2 HNCs, which effectively reduces the bulk and surface charger recombination. It means that the remaining electron in CdS component after hole transfer plays an important role in the final photocurrent performance. The annealing effect also plays a positive role in the photocurrent performance of nanocrystal film for CdS/MoS 2 HNC and CdS NC film. In addition, the transient absorption test is also used to exclude the possibility of interfacial electron transfer. The final results suggest that the construction of nano-heterojunction can affect the carrier dynamics of nanomaterials and enhance light responsiveness, which is conductive to the design and application of photovoltaic devices in the future.

Synthesis of MoS2 nanosheets drug delivery system and its drug release behaviors

Feng Wang,Fang-Yuan Lv,Kui-Long Liu,Zhi-Hao Li,Shu Niu,Yun-Yi Zhang,Hai-Lin Cong,You-Qing Shen,Bing Yu

A MoS2 nanosheets drug delivery system with photothermal conversion ability was synthesized. The drug loading content of the synthesized was as high as 24.5%. The drug HCPT was modified by lipoic acid (LA) and connected onto MoS2 nanosheets through S-Mo bond, which is more stable than physical adsorption. Due to the ester bond between HCPT and MoS2 nanosheets, the drug delivery system could responsively release HCPT when exposed to esterase.

Integrated Roles of MoS2 Nanosheets for Water Treatment and Polymer Flame Retardant

Li Yinta,Tang Chunyan,Yang Lang,Sun Yongjun,Ju Wenming

Layered MoS 2 nanosheets have been widely investigated for wastewater treatment or polymer flame retardant alone, while few reports concern about their integrated utilization within the two fields. Herein, the authors creatively explored the multiple roles of MoS 2 nanosheets for simultaneous water treatment and polymers flame retardant. MoS 2 nanosheets were firstly employed as adsorbents for heavy metals removal and organics elimination in wastewater. The adsorption capacities of MoS 2 for methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO), Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , were found 181.8, 102.1, 61.7 and 51.8 mg/g, separately, due to the chemical and electrostatic interactions. Then the MoS 2 nanosheets after water treatment (MoS 2 −x) were blended into polystyrene (PS) to study their flame-retardant properties and integrated utilization explorations. Results based on thermal stability, smoke suppression and heat resistance revealed that MoS 2 −x/PS composites displayed slower heat release rate (HRR), smaller smoke production rate (SPR) and lower CO production rate (COP) but higher T −10% than that of pristine PS, demonstrating the excellent flame-retardant efficiency of MoS 2 −x. Mechanisms for the great promotion in flame-retardant properties were found mainly resulted from nano-barrier and block wall effect of MoS 2 −x. Meanwhile, the rapid formation of char residue during the combustion also contributed to the improvement. Investigations in the present work implied the MoS 2 nanosheets could not only remove heavy metals and organics, but also can simultaneously delay the polymer combustion, demonstrating the excellent integrated and multiple roles of MoS 2 nanosheets in water remediation and polymer flame retardant.

High-Throughput Zwitterion-Modified MoS2 Membranes: Preparation and Application in Dye Desalination

Min Zhang,Jing Gao,Guanhua Liu,Miyu Zhang,Hengrao Liu,Liya Zhou,Yunting Liu,Xiaobing Zheng,Yanjun Jiang

Although loose nanofiltration membranes have been extensively studied for dye desalination, high-throughput membranes with antifouling and antibacterial properties are still highly needed. In this study, a zwitterion-modified molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) dual-layer loose nanofiltration membrane was prepared with the integration of antibacterial, antifouling, and high-flux properties. To be specific, MoS2 nanosheets were loaded on a polyacrylonitrile ultrafiltration membrane through pressure-assisted self-assembly. Then, poly (sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) was coated on the surface of the MoS2 membrane via a simple polydopamine (PDA)-assisted one-step codeposition to prepare PSBMA/PDA/MoS2 nanofiltration membranes. Elemental and morphological analyses confirmed the formation of the MoS2 layer and PSBMA/PDA coating. In addition, the effect of the PSBMA amount and codeposition time on surface properties and membrane performances was investigated. Under optimum conditions, the as-prepared membrane showed excellent water permeance of 262 LMH/bar with good dye rejection (99.8% for methylene blue) and salt permeability, as well as excellent antifouling and antibacterial properties benefiting from the synergy of PSBMA/PDA coating layers and MoS2 layers.

Intrinsic Electrocatalytic Activity of Single MoS2 Quantum Dot Collision on Ag Ultramicroelectrodes

Hao Wang,Haoran Tang,Yongxin Li

It is still a challenge to identify the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of single MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) because their characterization usually dissects contributions from a large amount of particles. Herein, we demonstrate a single-entity electrochemical method to help us investigate the enhancing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity at the single MoS2 QD level by using silver ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs). At Ag UMEs, the i–t response for MoS2 QD collision consists of repeated current “spikes” that return to the background level as hydrogen formation and covering the QD surface. In contrast, a stepwise “staircase” i–t response is observed for MoS2 QDs colliding on carbon UMEs (C UMEs). The results also show that the current density of single MoS2 QD collision on Ag UMEs is much higher than on C UMEs, revealing the impact of the unique property of the metal–MoS2 interface on HER performance, which has been demonstrated by thermodynamic analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It has been found that the interactions between MoS2 QDs and substrate UMEs lead to significant changes in the hydrogen adsorption energies (ΔEads) and Gibbs free energy (ΔGH), resulting in the difference in HER activity.

Isomerization behavior of p-aminoazobenzene directly anchored on MoS2/graphene oxide nanocomposite

Lu Zhou,Hao Fu,Zhe Wang,Ligang Chen,Guanhua Ren,Tao Jiang,Chenjie Gu,Liyuan Liu,Wentao Zhang,Weili Zhang,Jun Zhou,Jiaguang Han

Introducing novel nanomaterials into azobenzene (AB) and its derivatives enables a remarkable influence on the molecular isomerization and thus is of great interest for a variety of applications. We systematically study the thermal and photoinduced isomerization of p -aminoazobenzene ( p AAB) directly anchored on MoS 2 /GO nanocomposites by employing in-situ and real-time surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. The MoS 2 /GO nanocomposite provides the enhancements for the thermal isomerization efficiency of p AAB of more than 3-fold compared with that of the bare p AAB. We also show that the MoS 2 /GO nanocomposite has little impact on the UV-induced isomerization of the p AAB, but has apparent impact on the reverse cis -to- trans isomerization of the p AAB under blue light illumination. The results reveal that the effect of MoS 2 /GO nanocomposite on the photoinduced isomerization of p AAB depends on irradiation wavelength, which can be attributed to the competing interplay of charge transfer and structural relaxation in the hybrid system composed of p AAB and MoS 2 /GO nanocomposites. The study helps elucidate how the isomerization of azobenzene molecules is affected as incorporated into nanoscale assemblies, and thus open new opportunities for the applications of the isomerization of azobenzene in complex hybrid nanodevices.

Haishun Jiang,Kenan Zhang,Wenyao Li,Zhe Cui,Shu-Ang He,Siyu Zhao,Jun Li,Guanjie He,Paul R. Shearing,Dan J.L. Brett

It is important to develop a low-cost and easy-prepared electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction . In this work, MoS 2 /NiS hierarchical nanostructures (HHs) were fabricated on Ni foam by a simple one-step hydrothermal reaction using Ni foam as raw materials directly. Owing to the unique synthetic strategy that provide uniform MoS 2 /NiS HHs structure on the porous Ni foam, generate abundant active surfaces, small resistance, furthermore it is beneficial for carrier migration and contributing to a large number of active sites. Excellent electrocatalytic performances are obtained such as an overpotential of only ~84.1 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 76.9 mV dec −1 and a small inherent resistance of 6.33 Ω. More importantly, a quick current response under multistep potentials is realized and an excellent stability retained after 3000 cycles of CV test. Besides, a DC power to supply a device (MnMoO 4 //MoS 2 /NiS HHs B) under 1.6 V can generate a current density of 21 mA cm −2 , demonstrating its practical application.

Incorporation of active phase in porous MoS2 for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Qiao Wen,Ma Tiantian,Xu Xiaoyong,Wu Liqian,Yan Shiming,Wang Dunhui

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has been considered to be a promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Incorporation of 1 T phase is a strategy to allow basal planes of MoS 2 nanosheets simultaneously possess highly active catalytic sites and metallic property. This strategy requires as many basal planes as possible to be exposed to the surface, thus enabling the active sites on the basal planes to participate in the catalytic reaction. Herein, we report a porous ultra-thin 1 T phase MoS 2 (1 T-MoS 2 ) nanosheets prepared by a SiO 2 nanospheres template method. Ultra-thin MoS 2 nanosheets grow laterally around the surface of SiO 2 nanospheres. After etching SiO 2 , the rest porous ultra-thin MoS 2 nanosheets ensure the maximized exposure of basal plane active sites. In addition, the metallic porous structure can also facilitate transport of mass in holes and transfer of electron on basal planes. The synergistic effect of these aspects endows our sample with improved hydrogen evolution capability. The onset overpotential at 1 mA/cm 2 is 131 mV, and the corresponding Tafel slope is 63 mV/dec.

Immunological Responses Induced by Blood Protein Coronas on Two-Dimensional MoS2 Nanosheets

Didar Baimanov,Junguang Wu,Runxuan Chu,Rong Cai,Bing Wang,Mingjing Cao,Ye Tao,Jiaming Liu,Mengyu Guo,Jing Wang,Xia Yuan,Chendong Ji,Yuliang Zhao,Weiyue Feng,Liming Wang,Chunying Chen

Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets (NSs) have a large surface area, high surface free energy, and ultrathin structure, which enable them to more easily penetrate biological membranes and promote adsorption of drugs and proteins. NSs are capable of adsorbing a large amount of blood proteins to form NSs–protein corona complexes; however, their inflammatory effects are still unknown. Therefore, we investigated the pro-inflammatory effect of 2D model nanosheet structures, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), and the MoS2 NSs–protein complexes with four abundant proteins in human blood, i.e., human serum albumin (HSA), transferrin (Tf), fibrinogen (Fg), and immunoglobulin G (IgG). The interactions between the NSs and the proteins were analyzed by quantifying protein adsorption, determining binding affinity, and correlating structural changes in the protein corona with the uptake of NSs by macrophages and the subsequent inflammatory response. Although all of the NSs–protein complexes induced inflammation, IgG-coated and Fg-coated NSs triggered much stronger inflammatory effects by producing and releasing more cytokines. Among the four proteins, IgG possessed the highest proportion of β-sheets and led to fewer secondary structure changes on the MoS2 nanosheets. This can facilitate uptake and produce a stronger pro-inflammatory response in macrophages due to the recognition of an NSs–IgG complex by Fc gamma receptors and the subsequent activation of the NF-κB pathways. Our results demonstrate that the blood protein components contribute to the inflammatory effects of nanosheets and provide important insights for the nanosafety evaluation and the rational design of nanomedicines in the future.

Transparent MoS2/PEDOT Composite Counter Electrodes for Bifacial Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Tingting Xu,Dechong Kong,Huijie Tang,Xiulan Qin,Xuanhua Li,Ashim Gurung,Kaichang Kou,Lixin Chen,Qiquan Qiao,Wei Huang

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are solar energy conversion devices with high efficiency and simple fabrication procedures. Developing transparent counter electrode (CE) materials for bifacial DSSCs can address the needs of window-type building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs). Herein, transparent organic–inorganic hybrid composite films of molybdenum disulfide and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (MoS2/PEDOT) are prepared to take full advantage of the conductivity and electrocatalytic ability of the two components. MoS2 is synthesized by hydrothermal method and spin-coated to form the MoS2 layer, and then PEDOT films are electrochemically polymerized on top of the MoS2 film to form the composite CEs. The DSSC with the optimized MoS2/PEDOT composite CE shows power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7% under front illumination and 4.82% under back illumination. Compared with the DSSC made by the PEDOT CE and the Pt CE, the DSSC fabricated by the MoS2/PEDOT composite CE improves the PCE by 10.6% and 6.4% for front illumination, respectively. It proves that the transparent MoS2/PEDOT CE owes superior conductivity and catalytic properties, and it is an excellent candidate for bifacial DSSC in the application of BIPVs.

Facile synthesis of rGO–MoS2–Ag nanocomposites with long-term antimicrobial activities

Jingchen Li,Jie Zheng,Yadong Yu,Zhen Su,Lihui Zhang,Xiaojun Chen

The abuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of numerous super resistant bacteria, which pose a serious threat to public health. Developing nanomaterials with novel modes of bactericidal activity offers the promise of fighting pathogens without the risk of causing drug resistances. Here, we used reduced graphene oxide (rGO), bulk molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) to synthesize a ternary nanocomposite, rGO–MoS2–Ag, via a simple one-pot method. The resulting rGO–MoS2–Ag presented as crumpled and sheet-like structures decorated with Ag nanoparticles. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration of rGO–MoS2–Ag against Escherichia coli were 50 and 100 μg ml−1, while Staphylococcus aureus reacted only to twice higher concentrations of 100 and 200 μg ml−1, respectively. Notably, rGO–MoS2–Ag exhibited better antibacterial activity towards E. coli and S. aureus than rGO, MoS2, or rGO–MoS2. This result can be attributed to the excellent performance of rGO–MoS2–Ag in destroying the bacterial cell membrane and inducing the generation of reactive oxygen species. The Ag+ ion release of rGO–MoS2–Ag was delayed, endowing the nanocomposite with long-term antibacterial capabilities and better biosafety. Our results indicate that the as-prepared rGO–MoS2–Ag has promising potential for application in biomedicine and public health.

Multimodal theranostics augmented by transmembrane polymer-sealed nano-enzymatic porous MoS2 nanoflowers

Huiling Jiang,Yilin Du,Leilei Chen,Min Qian,Yafeng Yang,Taotao Huo,Xueying Yan,Tao Ye,Bing Han,Yi Wang,Rongqin Huang

Developing an all-in-one multimodal theranostic platform that can synergistically integrate sensitive photoacoustic (PA) imaging, enhanced photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) as well as the nano-enzyme activated chemodynamic therapy (CDT) presents a great challenge for the current nanomedicine design. Herein, a simple hydrothermal method was used to prepare porous molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanoflowers. These nanoflowers were assembled by three dimensional (3D)-stacked MoS 2 nanosheets with plentiful pores and large surfaces, which thus exhibited enhanced photothermal conversion via light trapping and peroxidase (POD)-like activity via active defects exposure. Consequently, this 3D-MoS 2 nanostructure could be well-sealed by polyethylene glycol-polyethylenimine polymer modified with nucleolar translocation signal sequence of the LIM Kinase 2 protein (LNP) via strong electrostatic interaction, which not only benefited to stably deliver anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) into the tumor cells for pH/NIR-responsive chemotherapy, but also provided strong photoacoustic, photothermal performances and stimulated generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for imaging-guided PTT/PDT/CDT combined therapy. This work promised a simple all-in-one multimodal theranostic platform to augment the potential antitumoral therapeutic outcomes.
