Continuous fabrication of hollow photocatalytic CNT/TiO2/calcium alginate microfibers via needle-based microfluidic device for environmental remediation in NO removal

Zhiyu Zhang,Yanhong Guo,Fei Long,Xinyu Zhang,Jing Wang,Yong Ren

NO is a common harmful air pollutant which leads to various environmental and health problems and needs to be addressed urgently. Herein, by combining sol-gel method and microfluidic approach, we successfully developed novel hollow alginate microfibers containing CNT/TiO 2 photocatalysts. The resulting fibers, with diameter of 1000 μm and adjustable wall thickness of 60–150 µm, were confirmed through microscope and SEM. The formation condition about various flow rate ratios of different phases was also investigated. Subsequently, various characterization methods including XRD, FT-IR and XPS were employed to investigate structural properties of prepared CNT/TiO 2 hybrid materials. Our findings indicate that the boosted absorption ability towards the visible light region, improved photo-generated electron transfer efficiency, as confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance respectively, mainly account for the enhanced photocatalytic performance in NO oxidation. The optimized CNT(10 %)/TiO 2 microfibers exhibited the best NO removal efficiency of 44.3 % under visible light, which is 1.59 times that of the pure TiO 2 . This study represents an interesting case for the combined preparation of CNT/TiO 2 /alginate microfibers for NO abatement.

(R)-Linalool is a key indicator of aroma quality levels of a distinctive black tea (Camellia sinensis var. Yinghong No. 9)

Chengshun Liu,Jianlong Li,Miao Wang,Guotai Jian,Chen Zhu,Hanxiang Li,Yongxia Jia,Jinchi Tang,Lanting Zeng

Camellia sinensis var. assamica is a major variety used to produce black tea. However, the core compounds influencing its aroma quality are unknown. In this study, Yinghong No. 9 black tea (YJBT), a distinctive black tea in South China, was analyzed. We detected 44 aroma compounds and identified seven key contributors, namely linalool, geraniol, trans -linalool oxide (furanoid), hexanal, methyl jasmonate, phenylacetaldehyde, and β-ionone. Linalool, which was generally more abundant in spring tea than in summer tea, contributed significantly to sweet and floral aromas. ( R )-Linalool was the primary linalool form in Yinghong No. 9, wherein it was highly abundant in high-quality tea leaves. The substantial expression of a linalool synthase gene and the relatively high catalytic efficiency of the encoded enzyme likely contributed to the accumulation of ( R )-linalool. This study identified the primary aroma compounds in YJBT, providing a foundation for advancing our knowledge of the aromatic quality of black tea.

NIR/glucose stimuli-responsive multifunctional smart hydrogel wound dressing with NO/O2 dual gas-releasing property promotes infected diabetic wound healing

Jiahui He,Zhenlong Li,Jueying Chen,Jiaxin Wang,Lipeng Qiao,Baolin Guo,Juan Hu

It is still challenging to design stimuli-responsive smart hydrogel dressing to promote bacteria-infected diabetic wound healing from the whole healing stage by intelligently responding to external stimuli or wound microenvironment. In addition, nitric oxide (NO) and oxygen (O 2 ) have been shown to accelerate diabetic wound healing by promoting angiogenesis and alleviating hypoxia. A series of NIR/glucose stimuli-responsive multifunctional smart hydrogels with NO/O 2 dual gas-releasing properties was designed based on N-carboxyethyl chitosan-grafted-phenylboronic acid (CECP), oxidized dextran (OD), ε-polylysine (EPL)-coated manganese dioxide (EMn), and β-cyclodextrin-reduced graphene oxide/N, N’-di-sec-butyl-N, N’-dinitroso-1,4-phenylenediamine (rGB) via dual dynamic crosslinking to promote bacteria-infected diabetic wound healing. The added rGB and EMn as photothermal agents rapidly kill bacteria through photothermal therapy. Meanwhile, rGB endows CECP/OD/EMn/rGB hydrogels to release NO under NIR stimulation to promote angiogenesis. Nanozyme EMn with catalase (CAT)/superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity can scavenge ROS and release O 2 to alleviate hypoxia and oxidative stress. The phenylboronic acid in CECP forming phenylboronate ester structure endows hydrogel with glucose-controlled release of doxycycline. NIR/glucose stimuli-responsive CECP/OD/EMn/rGB hydrogels with NO/O 2 dual gas-releasing property in a full-thickness skin wound-infected diabetic model reduced the inflammation, promoted wound contraction, collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and alleviated wound hypoxia, providing new ideas for treating bacteria-infected diabetic wounds.

Monodentate/bidentate chiral Ph/Py-NO ligands: an unexpected switch of enantioselectivity in Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles and 2,3-dioxopyrrolidines

Xiong-Li Liu,Jing Lou,Xian-Qiao Zhu,Di-Cheng Pan,De-Wu Liu,Hui-Xian Jing,Wenjing Zhang,Hong-Xing Cen,Guo-Deng Guo-Deng Dong

The development of single chiral source-derived ligands to fine-switch enantioselectivity has continuously attracted the attention in asymmetric catalysis. Herein, we use the same chiral source L-prolinamide as the starting material, synthesizing chiral bidentate pyridine-type N-oxide ligands (denoted as Py-NO) and chiral monodentate phenyl N-oxide ligands (denoted as Ph-NO); their effectiveness was demonstrated in the switch of enantioselectivity in palladium(II)-catalysed Friedel-Crafts (FC) alkylation of indoles and 2,3-dioxopyrrolidines, and both enantiomers of structurally important indole derivatives can be prepared in good yields (up to 91% yield) and high enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee). Key to the success of switch of enantioselectivity is the existence of two different activation patterns in this palladium(II) catalytic system. Experiments demonstrated that a counteranion would plausibly coordinate to the palladium(II) center in the stereoselectivity-determining step. Preliminary mechanistic studies provide a rational explanation for the above observations. This study was the first example of monodentate ligand in asymmetric catalytic Friedel-Crafts alkylation.

Near-infrared light-enhanced polydopamine-based multifunctional nanoparticles for combination of chemodynamic and NO gas therapy in the treatment of osteosarcoma

Ping Yuan,Weigang Zhang,Mingrui Yang,Yun Chen,Zhifei Yang,Zheng Zhao,Lingling Zhang

The emergence of treatment approaches that integrate conventional phototherapy with additional adjuvant treatments has garnered considerable interest. In this study, we proposed a complex utilizing Fe and polydopamine as a carrier, co-loaded with the nitric oxide initiator L-arginine (L-Arg) and the photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG), as a potential strategy for the “photothermal/photodynamic/Chemodynamic/nitric oxide gas therapy” of osteosarcoma. Nanoparticles have the ability to undergo degradation within the mildly acidic conditions present in the tumor microenvironment. Consequently, the resulting release of Fe ions facilitates the consumption of hydrogen peroxide through Fenton/Fenton-like reactions, thereby generating hydroxyl radicals (•OH) that possess potent cytotoxic properties. L-Arg can also be catalyzed by reactive oxygen species (ROS) or NO synthase overexpressed in cancer cells to generate NO, which is not only used for gas therapy (GT), but also as a biological messenger to regulate vasodilation to relieve tumor hypoxia. More importantly, the addition of low-dose near-infrared laser can not only promote the efficiency of the above two reactions, but also achieve PTT/PDT and obtain good synergistic tumor treatment effects. The anti-tumor efficacy of nanoparticles was verified in the 143B mouse osteosarcoma model. This “PTT/PDT/CDT/GT” strategy expands bone tumor treatment options through nanoparticle-mediated enhanced therapy.

Exogenous NaHS maintains storage quality of Prunus salicina ‘Wushan plum’ by regulating the antioxidant system, endogenous H2S, ethylene and NO metabolism

Saiying Han,Ling Liu,Lilei Wang,Jin Han,Yeru Ai,Huali Wang,Kaifang Zeng,Jian Ming,Lili Deng

Prunus salicina ‘Wushan plum’ is a climacteric fruit, which rapidly ripens under the action of ethylene after harvesting, resulting in quality deterioration that seriously restricts the sustainable development of the industry. In order to examine the potential role of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS, the donor of exogenous H 2 S) in slowing down the ripening and senescence process of plum fruit, the changes in storage quality, antioxidant capacity, endogenous signals and gene expression levels were evaluated during storage at 25 °C for twelve days. The results indicated that NaHS treatment delayed the coloration of plum fruit and maintained higher firmness, titratable acid content (TA) and marketable fruit rate. Treatment with NaHS increased the activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX); promoted the accumulation of total phenols (TP) and ascorbic acid (AsA), and inhibited the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipoxygenase (LOX) activity, which in turn alleviated oxidative damage. H 2 S treatment down-regulated the expression of PsACO1 and PsACS1 and inhibited the production of ethylene; up-regulated the expression of PsSiR , PsSAT , PsOASTL, and PsLCD , which in turn elevated the activities of sulfite reductase (SiR), serine acetyltransferase (SAT), O-acetylserine cleavage lyase (OASTL), and L-cysteine desulfurylase (LCD), and facilitated the accumulation of the endogenous H 2 S content; up-regulated the expression of L-Arginine synthesis-related genes and PsNOA , which increased the content of L-Arginine as well as the activity of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and facilitated the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO). The above results indicated that NaHS could improve the antioxidant system, endogenous H 2 S, ethylene, and NO metabolism of plum, thus maintaining the storage quality of the fruit.

In-situ generated metallic Bi accelerating Z-scheme charge transfer in Bi2O3/Bi/PCN heterojunction for highly efficient photocatalytic NO oxidation

Zixun Fang,Yao Zhou,Yang Yang,Yidong Hou,Can Yang,Jinshui Zhang

Artificial Z-scheme photocatalytic systems, inspired by natural photosynthesis, have been widely employed for pollutant removal. In this study, we fabricated a ternary Z-scheme Bi 2 O 3 /Bi/porous carbon nitride (PCN) heterojunction with an intimately coupled interface through a simple EG-assisted solvothermal approach to improving photocatalytic performance of NO oxidation. The in-situ generated metallic Bi acts as an electron mediator, effectively accelerating the separation and transfer of photoexcited carriers. The unique Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism provides the strong redox abilities and isolates the active sites for specific reactions, thus promoting photocatalytic NO oxidation activity. As a result, the optimized Bi 2 O 3 /Bi/PCN sample achieved a NO removal efficiency of 94.6%, outperforming single-component catalysts and most previously reported heterojunction-based photocatalysts. Additionally, in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was employed to propose the NO removal mechanism, offering valuable insight into the conversion pathway. Such a heterogeneous Z-scheme photocatalytic system with a strong redox ability, high charge-separation efficiency, and long-term stability, demonstrates significantly enhanced photoactivity for pollutant removal and is expected to attract increasing interest for other photocatalytic applications.

Synergistic Effects of NO/H2S Gases on Antibacterial, Anti-inflammatory, and Analgesic Properties in Oral Ulcers Using a Gas-Releasing Nanoplatform

Yuanqi Chen,Kezheng Lei,Yinxi Li,Zhixiang Mu,Tengda Chu,Jiajun Hu,Bairui Zeng,Yi Wang,Jianliang Shen,Xiaojun Cai,Tianpeng Shi,Hui Deng

Oral mucosal wounds are more prone to inflammation due to direct exposure to various microorganisms. This can result in pain, delayed healing, and other complications, affecting patients' daily activities such as eating and speaking. Consequently, the overall quality of life for patients is significantly reduced. To address these challenges, we developed a multifunctional therapeutic nanoplatform, DATS@Arg-EA-SA, through the self-assembly of guanidinated dendritic peptides (Arg-EA-SA) that encapsulate diallyl trisulfide (DATS), a hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) donor. The guanidine-rich surface of DATS@Arg-EA-SA efficiently neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the ulcer microenvironment, generating nitric oxide (NO), which acts as the primary antimicrobial agent by disrupting bacterial membranes. Concurrently, the presence of glutathione triggers the release of H 2 S from DATS, providing supplementary antibacterial support. DATS@Arg-EA-SA effectively kills all bacteria, achieving results comparable to those of penicillin, a classical antibiotic. Moreover, it demonstrates superior sterilization efficacy against drug-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), significantly outperforming penicillin. Following the initial antimicrobial phase, the nanoplatform transitions into an anti-inflammatory stage. H 2 S, in synergy with NO, facilitates the conversion of M1 macrophages to M2 macrophages, thereby reducing the expression of inflammatory factors. Importantly, the combination of H 2 S and NO provides effective analgesia by downregulating the expression of TRPV1 and TRPV4, thus restoring normal dietary behaviors and improving the overall quality of life. This system ultimately promotes collagen fiber deposition and accelerates the re-epithelialization of the ulcer wound, positioning DATS@Arg-EA-SA as a promising gas-delivery nanoplatform for rapid wound repair in the clinical treatment. Statement of Significance Oral mucosal wounds are highly susceptible to microbial infections, leading to inflammation, pain, delayed healing, and a significant decline in quality of life. We developed a multifunctional therapeutic nanoplatform (DATS@Arg-EA-SA) via the self-assembly of guanidinated dendritic peptides encapsulating the H 2 S donor DATS, which exhibited antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. In the oral ulcer microenvironment, DATS@Arg-EA-SA generates substantial NO under elevated ROS levels, while glutathione triggers the controlled release of H 2 S. NO disrupts bacterial membranes as the primary antibacterial agent, with H 2 S providing synergistic antibacterial effects. Furthermore, H 2 S and NO synergistically promote the transformation of M1 to M2 macrophages, attenuating inflammation. Importantly, the combined action of H 2 S and NO alleviates pain by downregulating TRPV1 and TRPV4, supporting the restoration of normal dietary behavior and improving quality of life.

Li Yan,Ge Jingping,Yin Yuanyuan,He Juan,Shang Longcheng

Background: This study aimed to explore the regulatory effect of anserine on HUVEC cell injury and thrombosis in deep venous thrombosis (DVT) rats, and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. Methods: Non-targeted metabolomics data analyses were conducted using an ultra-performance liquid chromatography system Vanquish UHPLC and mass spectrometer to detect plasma metabolism profiles. The transcriptome sequencing and gene intervention experiments were performed to verify the regulatory effect. Further in vivo and in vitro experiments were performed. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the levels of P-selectin, E-selectin, and vWF, hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining was performed to observe thrombotic and inflammatory cell infiltration, flow cytometry and TUNEL assays were performed to detect apoptosis, and qPCR and WB assays were conducted to determine the gene and protein expression. Results: Anserine alleviated HUVECs injury, reduced adhesion molecule expression, and inflammation. It decreased P-selectin, E-selectin, vWF, THBD, TFPI levels, and apoptosis while promoting NOS3, ET-1, and NO release in HUVECs. In DVT rats, anserine reduced P-selectin, E-selectin, vWF, thrombosis, cell infiltration, apoptosis, and promoted NO release. Transcriptome sequencing and gene intervention confirmed anserine’s regulation of the PI3K-Akt pathway and coagulation via MYB. CARNMT1, a regulatory enzyme for anserine metabolism, increased anserine content, inhibiting coagulation, thrombosis, cell infiltration, and promoting NO release in rats. Conclusion: This study confirmed anserine could alleviate DVT by improving the inflammatory response, inhibiting blood agglutination, and promoting vasodilation, providing new potential therapeutic targets, important scientific evidence for the development of DVT management, and new clues for an in-depth understanding of its molecular mechanisms.

Vanadium-based catalytic fibers for selective reduction of NO by NH3 and their potential use on co-processing of dust and NOx

Jiafan Cheng,Weiman Li,Xiaoze Wang,Haidi Liu,Yunfa Chen

This work is dedicated to fabrication of catalytic fibers for the process of selective catalytic reduction of NO x by NH 3 (NH 3 -SCR). By employing vanadium-titanium as main catalytic components, we investigated the effect of different inorganic supports (glass fiber, aluminum silicate fiber and quartz fiber), preparation methods (a sol–gel method and a hydrothermal method) and loading weight of V 2 O 5 on the NH 3 -SCR performance of catalytic fibers. The catalytic aluminum silicate fiber with 5% vanadium/titanium ratio prepared by a sol–gel method (denoted as V5Ti/AF) showed the best SCR and mass transfer performance. Characterization results indicated that a relatively large surface area, strong acidity, well-dispersed catalyst particles, and good redox and desorption properties derived from the interaction between catalytic components and supports all contributed to the good performance of V5Ti/AF. The pressure drop of catalytic fibers were measured, and the total pressure drop of catalytic fibers and de-dust ceramic membranes was much lower than previously prepared catalytic ceramic membranes, indicating their potential use in the co-processing of dust and gaseous pollutants.

Maximizing the Formation of Reactive Oxygen Species for Deep Oxidation of NO via Manipulating the Oxygen-Vacancy Defect Position on (BiO)2CO3

Fei Rao,Gangqiang Zhu,Weibin Zhang,Yunhua Xu,Baowei Cao,Xianjin Shi,Jianzhi Gao,Yuhong Huang,Yu Huang,Mirabbos Hojamberdiev

Constructing oxygen vacancies (OVs) in metal-oxide semiconductors is an effective and simple way to enhance the photocatalytic performance via promoting the utilization of solar light and boosting the formation of surface reactive oxygen species (ROS). The presence of different oxygen atoms in the same crystal structure can possibly lead to the formation of different types of OVs with distinct physicochemical and optoelectronic properties. Particularly, the two different crystallographic positions of oxygen atoms in the [BiO]22+ layer of (BiO)2CO3 (BOC) allow the construction of two types of OVs (OVs1 and OVs2). In this work, OVs1-BOC and OVs2-BOC are synthesized via introducing the OVs1 and OVs2 on the surface of the BOC. The influence of OVs1 and OVs2 on the generation of ROS in the BOC is demonstrated based on theoretical and experimental studies by analyzing the separation and redox potentials of photogenerated charge carriers, absorption surface adsorbates (H2O and O2), and reaction active energy. The photocatalytic performance is evaluated by photo-oxidative nitric oxide (NO) removal efficiency under visible light irradiation. The OVs1-BOC and OVs2-BOC exhibit 50.0 and 41.6% photo-oxidative NO removal efficiencies, while generating 15.6 and 16.54 ppb NO2, respectively. The in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and estimated NO conversion pathway reveal the photo-oxidative NO removal mechanism and suppression of NO2 formation on the surfaces of OVs1-BOC and OVs2-BOC. This work demonstrates a straightforward approach for enhancing the photo-oxidative NO removal via manipulating the OV defect position in semiconductors.

MnOx Supported on Hierarchical SAPO-34 for the Low-Temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3: Catalytic Activity and SO2 Resistance

Lusha Zhou,Jinkun Guan,Chenglong Yu,Bichun Huang

The ethanol dispersion method was employed to synthesize a series of MnOx/SAPO-34 catalysts using SAPO-34 with the hierarchical pore structure as the zeolite carrier, which were prepared by facile acid treatment with citric acid. Physicochemical properties of catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, BET, TEM, NH3-TPD, SEM, FT-IR, Py-IR, H2-TRP and TG/DTG. NH3-SCR performances of the hierarchical MnOx/SAPO-34 catalysts were evaluated at low temperatures. Results show that citric acid etching solution at a concentration of 0.1 mol/L yielded a hierarchical MnOx/SAPO-34-0.1 catalyst withca.15 wt.% Mn loading, exhibiting optimal catalytic activity and SO2tolerance at low temperatures. Almost 100% NO conversion and over 90% N2selectivity at 120 °C under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 40,000 h−1could be obtained over this sample. Furthermore, the NO conversion was still higher than 65% when 100 ppm SO2was introduced to the reaction gas for 4 h. These could be primarily attributed to the large specific surface area, high surface acidity concentration and abundant chemisorbed oxygen species provided by the hierarchical pore structure, which could also increase the mass transfer of the reaction gas. This finding suggests that the NH3-SCR activity and SO2poisoning tolerance of hierarchical MnOx/SAPO-34 catalysts at low temperatures can be improved by controlling the morphology of the catalysts, which might supply a rational strategy for the design and synthesis of Mn-based SCR catalysts.
