Preparation of Zr-based MOF/PDMS Janus membrane for vacuum membrane distillation and its removal of phenolic pollutants from coal chemical wastewater

Qingqing Niu,Mingzhu Chen,Tengfei Shao,Weijun Zhen

The conventional blending method for preparing photocatalytic composite membranes often results in dense polymeric structures that encapsulate photocatalysts, thereby limiting their photocatalytic activity. To address this limitation, we developed an innovative Janus membrane through in-situ growth of polyaniline for hydrophilic modification of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), followed by controlled deposition of zirconium-based metal-organic framework (TFMOF) particles via a dip-coating process. The obtained TFMOF/PDMS Janus membrane exhibits significant asymmetric wettability (underwater oil contact angle >140°). In phenol degradation tests, the membrane achieved 93.78 % removal efficiency within 2 h under visible light irradiation. When applied to actual coal chemical wastewater treatment, the Janus membrane demonstrated removal rates of 68.71 % for volatile phenols and 77.22 % for COD in the feed solution, with corresponding values of 79.85 % and 86.18 % in the distillate, respectively. This work provides a robust solution for coal chemical wastewater treatment by synergistically combining asymmetric wettability structure with photocatalytic membrane distillation.

Single-cell impedance cytometry of anticancer drug-treated tumor cells exhibiting mitotic arrest state to apoptosis using low-cost silver-PDMS microelectrodes

Xinlong Yang,Ziheng Liang,Yuan Luo,Xueyuan Yuan,Yao Cai,Duli Yu,Xiaoxing Xing

Chemotherapeutic drugs such as paclitaxel and vinblastine interact with microtubules and thus induce complex cell states of mitosis arrest at the G2/M phase followed by apoptosis dependent on drug exposure time and concentration. Microfluidic impedance cytometry (MIC), as a label-free and high-throughput technology for single-cell analysis, has been applied for viability assay of cancer cells post drug exposure at fixed time and dosage, yet verification of this technique for varied tumor cell states after anticancer drug treatment remains a challenge. Here we present a novel MIC device and for the first time perform impedance cytometry on carcinoma cells exhibiting progressive states of G2/M arrest followed by apoptosis related to drug concentration and exposure time, after treatments with paclitaxel and vinblastine, respectively. Our results from impedance cytometry reveal increased amplitude and negative phase shift at low frequency as well as higher opacity for HeLa cells under G2/M mitotic arrest compared to untreated cells. The cells under apoptosis, on the other hand, exhibit opposite changes in these electrical parameters. Therefore, the impedance features differentiate the HeLa cells under progressive states post anticancer drug treatment. We also demonstrate that vinblastine poses a more potent drug effect than paclitaxel especially at low concentrations. Our device is fabricated using a unique sacrificial layer-free soft lithography process as compared to the existing MIC device, which gives rise to readily aligned parallel microelectrodes made of silver-PDMS embedded in PDMS channel sidewalls with one molding step. Our results uncover the potential of the MIC device, with a fairly simple and low-cost fabrication process, for cellular state screening in anticancer drug therapy.

Preparation of electrospun PVA@Ls@BAC@PDMS composite nanofibrous air filtration membrane with high efficiency removal for PM2.5 and excellent heat resistance

Yi Wang,Yu Miao,Yuxin Cai,Enfu Wang,YiPeng Liang,Jinhuan Zhong,Wenbiao Zhang,Jingda Huang

Development of water-soluble polymer air filtration materials attracts considerable attentions due to their environmentally friendly performance and high efficiency, but the balance of mechanical strength, efficiency and pressure drop still is a severe challenge. Focusing on this issue, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), bamboo activated carbon (BAC) and sodium lignosulfonate (Ls) were combined to construct an electrospinning system with two filtration functions. In the PVA@Ls@BAC system, the 3D network constructed by the electrospun PVA based nanofibrous could effectively intercept PM2.5, and the introduced Ls enhanced the mechanical strength of PVA nanofibrous due to its good rigidity. In addition, the added negatively charged BAC facilitated the electrostatic adsorption of PM2.5 while also improved the heat resistance of the system. Moreover, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was introduced to enhance the water resistance of the system. The resulting electrospun PVA@Ls@BAC@PDMS composite nanofibrous air filtration membrane exhibited excellent air filtration performance (98.67%), water repellency (123.7° of WCA), and reusable performance, as well as having good mechanical property and the tensile fracture strain reaching 112%. Because of its good performance and simple preparation process, the electrospun PVA@Ls@BAC@PDMS composite nanofibrous air filtration membrane has great application space. Graphical

Research on the Comparison Properties of PDMS Specimens Demolding Processes and the Mechanical Performance of Hollow-Solid Ratios of Flexible Telescopic Rods

Ruining Shang,Xiaona Li,Xiaogang Wu,Weiyi Chen

The main motivation of this work was to demonstrate a hollow telescopic rod structure that could be used for minimally invasive surgery. The telescopic rods were fabricated using 3D printing technology to make mold flips. During fabrication, differences in biocompatibility, light transmission, and ultimate displacement were compared between telescopic rods fabricated via different processes, so as to select the appropriate process. To achieve these goals, flexible telescopic rod structures were designed and 3D-printed molds were fabricated using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Stereolithography (SLA) techniques. The results showed that the three molding processes had no impact on the doping of the PDMS specimens. However, the FDM molding process had lower surface flatness accuracy compared to SLA. The SLA mold flip fabrication exhibited superior surface accuracy and light transmission compared to the other methods. The sacrificial template method and the use of HTL direct demolding technique had no significant impact on cellular activity and biocompatibility, but the mechanical properties of the PDMS specimens were weakened after swelling recovery. The height and radius of the hollow rod were found to have a significant impact on the mechanical properties of the flexible hollow rod. The hyperelastic model was fitted appropriately with the mechanical test results, and the ultimate elongation increased with an increase in hollow–solid ratios under the uniform force.Keywords:3D-print;mold casting;PDMS;mechanics;flexible telescopic structure;transparency

Versatile flexible SERS substrate for in situ detection of contaminants in water and fruits based on Ag NPs decorated wrinkled PDMS film

Houjia Zhang,Zhaoyi Zhang,Hongjun Wang,Lili Huang,Zhenshan Yang,Yangzhi Wang,Yangzhi Wang,Hefu Li,Hefu Li

Flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate has attracted great attention due to its convenient sampling and on-site monitoring capability. However, it is still challenging to fabricate a versatile flexible SERS substrate, which can be used for in situ detection of analytes either in water or on irregular solid surfaces. Here, we report a flexible and transparent SERS substrate based on a wrinkled polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film obtained by transferring corrugated structures on the aluminium/polystyrene bilayer film, onto which silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are deposited by thermal evaporation. The as-fabricated SERS substrate exhibits a high enhancement factor (∼1.19×105), good signal uniformity (RSD of 6.27%), and excellent batch-to-batch reproducibility (RSD of 7.3%) for rhodamine 6 G. In addition, the Ag NPs@W-PDMS film can maintain high detection sensitivity even after mechanical deformations of bending or torsion for 100 cycles. More importantly, being flexible, transparent, and light, the Ag NPs@W-PDMS film can both float on the water surface and conformally contact with the curved surface for in situ detection. The malachite green in aqueous environment and on apple peel can be easily detected down to 10−6 M with a portable Raman spectrometer. Therefore, it is expected that such a versatile flexible SERS substrate has great potential in on-site, in situ contaminant monitoring for realistic applications.

Double layered design for electromagnetic interference shielding with ultra-low reflection features: PDMS including carbon fibre on top and graphene on bottom

Lu Xu,Sheng Wan,Yanqing Heng,Sixin Wang,Jingjing Yang,Yubing Dong,Yaqin Fu,Qingqing Ni

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with low reflection features have become necessary for a new generation of electronic devices to reduce secondary electromagnetic pollution . Here, a novel strategy is adopted to provide flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite films with ultra-low reflection EMI shielding performance by constructing a double-layer structure with uniformly dispersed carbon fibres (CFs) in the upper layer as an impedance-matching absorption layer and continuous graphene fibres (GFs) located at the bottom layer as a conductive reflection layer. The resulting specific structure significantly reduces the reflectivity of the composite film at extremely low carbon conductive fillers (0.01 wt% CFs and 1.00 wt% GFs) through the process of “absorption-reflection-reabsorption” when incident electromagnetic waves (EMWs) pass through the composite film: the total shielding effectiveness ( SE Total ) achieves 34.4 dB at 18.0 GHz, while the shielding effectiveness of reflection ( SE R ) is only 0.1 dB, and reflection coefficient ( R ) is as low as 0.018. This phenomenon indicates that 1.8% of the incident EMWs are reflected in the propagation process when 99.96% are attenuated. In addition, the shielding mechanism of the double-layer EMI shielding composite films with low reflection features is studied in depth. This study provides a reliable idea for designing flexible EMI shielding materials with ultra-low reflection to alleviate secondary electromagnetic radiation pollution.

High-Performance Flexible Strain Sensors: The Role of In-Situ Cross-Linking and Interface Engineering in Liquid Metal–Carbon Nanotube-PDMS Composites

Jianan Song,Guangxing Huang,Feng Wei,Jiajia Meng,Kan Zhang

The increasing demand for high-performance strain sensors has driven the development of innovative composite systems. This study focused on enhancing the performance of composites by integrating liquid metal, carbon nanotubes, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in an innovative approach that involved advanced interface engineering, filler synergy, and in situ cross-linking of PDMS in solution. Surface modification of liquid metal with allyl disulfide and hydrogen-containing polydimethylsiloxane significantly improved its stability and dispersion within the polymer matrix. Through in situ cross-linking in solution and subsequent segment rearrangement after solvent evaporation, a continuous filler network was formed within the composite. The composites exhibited enhanced thermal stability, achieving a thermal conductivity of up to 2.13 W/(m·K) while simultaneously attaining a high electrical conductivity of 416 S/cm. The composite demonstrated excellent thermal management capabilities, alongside remarkable mechanical properties, including over 400% elongation at break and a low modulus of 0.587 MPa, even at high filler content. These attributes make the composite highly suitable for flexible strain sensor applications. Notably, the composite demonstrated outstanding strain sensing capabilities, effectively monitoring both human motion and handwriting. This work highlighted the critical roles of interface modification, filler interactions, and in situ cross-linking in achieving significant improvements in thermal, electrical, and sensing performance, thereby advancing the potential applications of flexible electronic materials.

Dual network structures of PDMS-based composite foam via anchoring liquid metal nanoparticles for improved thermal conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding performances

Ying Zhang,Song Yang,Yilin Liu,Ting Gu,Fei Liu

Despite their promising application prospects in electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, a significant challenge remains in endowing flexible porous polymer-based conductive composites with exceptional thermal management capabilities. In this study, PDMS/GNPs foam serves as a three-dimensional (3D) porous skeleton, with LM nanoparticles anchored on its surface, creating a poly(dimethylsiloxane)/graphene nanoplatelets@liquid metal (PDMS/GNPs@LM) composite foam with a dual network structure, achieved through a simplified salt template and extrusion impregnation method. Owing to the successful construction of this dual 3D network structure, when the filler loading is 22.34 vol%, PDMS/GNPs@LM foam exhibits an excellent thermal conductivity of 0.74 W m−1 K−1, representing a 1133% enhancement compared to the neat PDMS foam. Finite element simulations demonstrate that the LM layer network exhibits excellent heat transmission due to the effective adhesion of adjacent LM nanoparticles via the polyvinyl alcohol adhesives, with heat flux mainly transferred through the continuous LM framework. The PDMS/GNPs@LM foam possesses an outstanding electrical conductivity of 35.15 S m−1 and excellent EMI shielding effectiveness of 40.8 dB (with a thickness of only 2.13 mm). Furthermore, the PDMS/GNPs@LM foams demonstrate good mechanical flexibility and exhibit rapid electrothermal response and hydrophobicity. Based on these merits, the PDMS/GNPs@LM foam is anticipated to find applications in electronics, particularly in intelligent electromagnetic protection and thermal management systems.

A novel metal-free fluorine-free self-cleaning coating with photocatalytic activity and superhydrophobicity based on RP/HTCC@PDMS for hydraulic concrete

Chi Zhang,Shuaixiao Gao,Ye Wang,Xin Zhang,Hongqiang Chu,Huajie Huang,Fanrun Huang,Hainan Wu,Xinyan Xiong

Hydraulic concrete structures, frequently exposed to water environments, are highly susceptible to surface contamination by inorganic solid particles, organic chemical pollutants, and microorganisms like algae. In response, a novel metal-free fluorine-free coating was developed by combining red phosphorus/hydrothermal carbonization carbon (RP/HTCC) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with photocatalytic activity and superhydrophobicity to enable superior self-cleaning for hydraulic concrete. The proper integration of HTCC into RP (RP/HTCC-2) introduced a micro-nanostructured surface, improved light absorption, optimized band energy alignment, and enhanced photogenerated charge separation and migration. Correspondingly, the RP/HTCC-2@PDMS coating exhibited good self-cleaning for organic pollutant degradation on concrete surfaces, achieving 97.6 % for Rhodamine B (RhB) and 82.5 % for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in water within 4-h visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, it showed remarkable superhydrophobicity, with a high water contact angle (WCA) of 157 ± 0.5° and a low water sliding angle (WSA) of 6 ± 0.5°, driving efficient self-cleaning against powder dusts. Besides, RP/HTCC-2@PDMS demonstrated robust durability against high-intensity long-term UV exposure and water-jet impact. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of photocatalytic activity and superhydrophobicity were further evident in the coating’s algal antifouling and inhibition. After 12-h visible light irradiation, the RP/HTCC-2@PDMS coating achieved a 69.8 % reduction in Microcystis aeruginosa in water. Detailed analysis of the inhibition mechanism revealed significant changes in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, catalase (CAT) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, phycobiliprotein (PB) content, and algae organic matters (AOM). Collectively, these findings are believed to provide valuable insights on the development of green sustainable self-cleaning coating and the advanced synergistic mechanisms driving their effective and robust self-cleaning.

Molecular interface anchoring in PI-b-PDMS/SiO2@BN block copolymer foams for flexible, ultra-low dielectric, and enhanced terahertz communication performance

Haoyu Ma,Jiaozhu Wu,Chengzhe Gao,Silin He,Pengjian Gong,Qiwu Shi,Zhao Wang,Guangxian Li,Chul B. Park

In the context of the future sixth-generation (6G) communication system, the development of multi-functional materials with ultra-low dielectric permittivity ( D k ) and ultra-low dielectric loss ( D f ) is of paramount importance for the design of terahertz (THz) frequency electromagnetic wave transmission devices. In this work, polyimide- block -polydimethylsiloxane (PI- b -PDMS copolymer, PIC) material with low D k , high flexibility and high supercritical fluid foaming ability was fabricated via copolymerization. Additionally, core–shell SiO 2 @BN nanofillers were synthesized by condensing tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) on hexagonal boron nitride (BN) nanofiller surface. Subsequently, flexible polyimide/SiO 2 @BN foam was fabricated via supercritical N 2 foaming. The resulting PIC/SiO 2 @BN nanocomposites exhibit exceptional flexibility and impressive thermal resistance (thermal decomposition temperature 472.2 °C). Notably, the incorporation of core–shell SiO 2 @BN nanofillers leads to the formation of a molecular interface anchoring structure through hydrogen bonding effect. This structure effectively reduced the mobility of the flexible PIC polymer chains on the SiO 2 @BN nanofiller surfaces. Consequently, the porous PIC/SiO 2 @BN materials show a low shrinkage ratio, low dielectric property ( D k  = 1.21, D f  = 0.012 at 1 THz), excellent THz transmission rate (91.4 %) and long distance 6G THz signal coverage (125.99 m). Furthermore, porous PIC/SiO 2 @BN materials show superior flame-retardant and thermal infrared stealth properties.

The synergistic effect of nano-Al2O3 size and concentration on the interfacial adhesion properties of SMA/PDMS composites and their enhancement mechanism

Junjie Xiao,Biao Liang,Bo Liu,Mengfei Feng,Hui Cheng,Kaifu Zhang

Soft actuators composed of shape memory alloy (SMA) wires embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix hold potential for shape-morphing structures and soft robots. However, SMA exhibits poor bonding with PDMS due to its smooth and nonpolar surfaces. Nanoparticles show promise in interfacial strengthening of polymer composites. In this work, KH590 was used to modify nano-Al 2 O 3 particles and deposited on the SMA surface, creating a three-dimensional nanostructure bridging SMA and PDMS to enhance interface strength. The synergistic effects of particle size and content of nano-Al 2 O 3 particles on the interface strength were investigated in detail. It founds that interfacial strength decreased exponentially with particle size at content of 1 wt%, while when the content exceeds 1 wt%, the interface strength firstly increases with the particle size and then decreases in a logarithmic trend. Specifically, the interface strength is enhanced by 110 % with 3 wt% 50 nm particles. The interface enhancement mechanism was also discussed. The proposed nanoparticle modification approach was to strengthen SMA/PDMS interphase by increasing and extending fracture path, consuming more fracture energy. Chemical cross-linking also contributed to interface enhancement. This work enhances understanding of interfacial bonding mechanisms and provides valuable guide for interfacial strengthening of SMA/PDMS.

Intense and repeatable orange mechanoluminescence of Mn2+ activated CaGa4O7 for visualized mechanics sensing

Yongwen He,Jie Wang,Shaofan Fang,Junshan Qin,Long Feng,Birong Tian,Shaowei Feng,Zhaofeng Wang

Because of the unique and attractive mechanics–optics conversion without additional energy consumption, mechanoluminescence (ML) has shown widespread prospects in visualized mechanics sensing. However, the current ML-based sensing technique mainly relies on short-wavelength materials, which limits its application range. In this work, a novel ML material, Mn2+-doped CaGa4O7 (CGOM), is synthesized, and the composite elastomer CGOM/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) exhibits an intense and repeatable orange ML with a relatively long wavelength range of 500–710 nm. The initial ML intensity of the CGOM/PDMS is about 2.8 times that of ZnS:Cu/PDMS under the same testing conditions, which makes its ML visible in ambient light. The ML mechanism conforms to the interfacial triboelectricity-induced electron bombardment model, based on which the repeatable ML is realized without a pre-charging process. In addition, the ML of the CGOM/PDMS shows good responsiveness to the applied friction and tensile parameters. Based on these features, the CGOM/PDMS is further applied to visualized mechanics sensing by simulating the organism and the competitive sports scenarios.
