Ultrafine Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers have an outstanding potential in various applications, especially in absorbing fields. In this manuscript, an electrostatic-field-assisted centrifugal spinning system was designed to improve the production efficiency of ultrafine PVA fibers from PVA aqueous solution for NH3adsorption. It was established that the fiber production efficiency using this self-designed system could be about 1000 times higher over traditional electrospinning system. The produced PVA fibers establish high morphology homogeneity. The impact of processing variables of the constructed spinning system including rotation speed, needle size, liquid feeding rate, and voltage on fiber morphology and diameter was systematically investigated by SEM studies. To acquire homogeneous ultrafine PVA fiber membranes, the orthogonal experiment was also conducted to optimize the spinning process parameters. The impact weight of different studied parameters on the spinning performance was thus provided. The experimental results showed that the morphology of micro/nano-fibers can be well controlled by adjusting the spinning process parameters. Ultrafine PVA fibers with the diameter of 2.55 μm were successfully obtained applying the parameters, including rotation speed (6500 rpm), needle size (0.51 mm), feeding rate (3000 mL h−1), and voltage (20 kV). Furthermore, the obtained ultrafine PVA fiber mat was demonstrated to be capable of selectively adsorbing NH3gas relative to CO2, thus making it promising for NH3storage and other environmental purification applications.

In order to improve the safety and environmental friendliness of electrolytes, it is necessary to enhance the ionic conductivity of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel electrolytes. Herein, we present a method for the preparation of PVA hydrogels using electron beam irradiation, and based on this method, a high strength PVA hydrogel with breaking strength of 78 kPa was obtained. It was combined with room-temperature inorganic hydrated molten salt (RTMS) to prepare RTMS-PVA hydrogel electrolytes with a maximum ionic conductivity of 70.6 mS cm −1 , and the assembled NaCoHCF/AC aqueous ion battery at 1C The capacity retention after 100 cycles was 98%, achieving a highly stable PVA hydrogel with high ionic conductivity. This protocol is not only cost-effective in terms of raw materials and synthetic routes, simple to operate, and nontoxic, but also provides an avenue to realize large-scale industrial production.

Polypropylene (PP) mesh has been widely used in hernia repair as prosthesis material owing to its excellent balanced biocompatibility and mechanical properties . However, abdominal adhesion between the visceral and PP mesh is still a major problem. Therefore, anti-adhesive PP mesh was designed with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel and liposomes drug delivery system. First, PVA hydrogel coating was formed on the surface of PP mesh with freezing-thawing processing cycles (FTP). Subsequently, the lyophilized PVA 10 - c -PP was immersed in rapamycin (RPM)-loaded liposome solution until swelling equilibrated to obtain the anti-adhesion mesh [email protected] /PVA 10 - c -PP. It was demonstrated that the hydrogel coating can stably fix on the surface of PP mesh even after immersed in PBS solution at 37 °C or 40 °C for up to 30 days. In vitro cell tests revealed the excellent cytocompatibility and the potential to inhibit cell adhesion of the modified PP mesh. Moreover, the anti-adhesive effects of the [email protected] /PVA 10 - c -PP mesh was evaluated through in vivo experiments. The [email protected] /PVA 10 - c -PP mesh exhibited less adhesion than original PP mesh throughout the duration of implantation. At 30 days, the adhesion score of [email protected] /PVA 10 - c -PP mesh was 1.37 ± 0.75, however the original PP was 3 ± 0.71. Furthermore, the results of H&E and Masson trichrome staining proved that the [email protected] /PVA 10 - c -PP mesh showed slighter inflammation response and significant looser fibrous tissue surrounded the PP filaments as compared to the native PP. The current findings manifested that this type of [email protected] /PVA 10 - c -PP might be a potential candidate for anti-adhesion treatment. Hydrogel electrolytes have shown great promise in the field of flexible energy storage. However, the conventional hydrogel electrolytes have poor mechanical properties and are not recyclable. In addition, conventional hydrogel electrolytes cannot adapt to low and high temperature operating environments. In this study, starch/PVA/dimethyl sulfoxide/CaCl 2 (SPDC) organohydrogel was prepared by the freezing-thawing method. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and CaCl 2 was introduced to enhance the mechanical properties and widen the working temperature range of the starch/PVA hydrogel. The SPDC organohydrogel had high strength, toughness and good recyclability. The SPDC organohydrogel and the recycled SPDC organohydrogel was used as the electrolyte to assemble the flexible supercapacitor with activated carbon as the electrode. The supercapacitor prepared by SPDC organohydrogel electrolyte exhibited high areal capacitance of 156.50 mF/cm 2 at a current density of 1 mA/cm 2 and high capacitance retention rate of 82.23 % after 8000 cycles of charging and discharging. The supercapacitor prepared by the recycled organohydrogel electrolyte exhibited a high capacitance retention rate of 97.58 %. In addition, the supercapacitor could withstand different angular bending shapes and had wide temperature adaptability from −20 °C to 80 °C. The work provided a new version for the development of “green” hydrogel electrolyte for all-solid-state supercapacitor.

Articular cartilage with limited ability of regeneration remains a grand challenge in the field of tissue engineering. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel with low friction coefficient have been regarded as prior candidate for cartilage substitute, whereas lack of structure performance and bioactivity limited their application. Phosphate glass fiber (PGF) with outstanding mechanical performance and nature of biodegradability presents potential capability to improve mechanical stability of hydrogel and chondrocyte metabolism as well as cell recruitment. Herein, we describe a novel PGF-PVA composites hydrogel incorporated with continuous PGF. The presence of stiff PGF not only improves the mechanical properties of hydrogel with maximum tensile strength of 12.44 MPa and Young's modulus of 68.35 MPa, but also endows the hydrogel molecular structure with the increase of crystallinity and thermal stability via formation of crosslinking points. More importantly, the PVA hydrogel matrix exhibits efficient ions exchange behavior to control ions concentration during PGF degradation, resulting in more suitable metabolic environment for chondrocyte proliferation and induction with enhanced recruitment. Therefore, it is believed that this work provides a kind of fiber reinforced hydrogel material promising excellent properties for cartilage repair.

CdTe quantum dots (QDs) reveal the prospect as temperature sensors for high-speed bearing rotating elements owing to their excellent temperature dependence of photoluminescence (PL) spectra. However, the poor PL peak wavelength stability of CdTe QDs limits its practical application. Herein, we fabricated a CdTe@SiO 2 /PVA hybrid film via a sol–gel process based on CdTe QDs. The peak wavelength of PL spectra of the CdTe@SiO 2 /PVA hybrid film increases linearly with the rising temperatures, which is similar to CdTe QDs. Significantly, the linear relationship between the peak wavelength of PL spectra of the CdTe@SiO 2 /PVA hybrid film and temperature in the heating process from room temperature to 85 °C is consistent with that in the colling process from 85 °C to room temperature. In contrast to CdTe QDs, the CdTe@SiO 2 /PVA hybrid film presents superior PL peak wavelength stability. Furthermore, the uniformity of the hybrid film is significantly improved than our previous preparation method of thin films . The excellent film-forming property of the CdTe@SiO 2 /PVA hybrids is effective to engineering application. The feasibility and accuracy of the CdTe@SiO 2 /PVA sensor are verified through the temperature monitoring test of bearing rotating elements.

To date, most existing engineering materials have difficulty simultaneously separating oil/water and removing heavy metals from complex oily wastewater. In response to this challenge, a novel multifunctional composite hydrogel membrane (named PVA-CS-LDHs) was fabricated by incorporating chitosan (CS) and nanohydrotalcite (LDHs) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel. This material was developed using an easy yet versatile strategy of freezing and salting-out, which can enable the formation of a PVA-CS-LDH hydrogel membrane in one step and endow the PVA-CS-LDHs with high strength, excellent stretchability, favourable shape recoverability , and an ideal 3D microstructure. The PVA-CS-LDH membrane can purify emulsified oil and metal ions simultaneously with a separation efficiency of 99.89 % for emulsified oil and a removal efficiency of 97.44 % for Pb2+ ions. Additionally, the high-efficiency, multifunctional, high-antifouling and eco-friendly properties of the PVA-CS-LDH membrane make it a promising hydrogel material for both emulsified oil separation and heavy metal ion removal. Thus, this material provides critical application potential that can address scientific and technological challenges in complex oily wastewater purification.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a safe high-molecular polymer with good biocompatibility that can be prepared into hydrogels with high tensile strength by salting out. However, inorganic ions will cause PVA chains to form strong crystals through intramolecular H-bond interactions, resulting in dehydration of PVA chains and greatly reducing the water content of hydrogels. Herein, inspired by the structural model of straw rammed earth bricks, a PVA, silk nanofiber (SNF), and chitosan (CS) composite hydrogel (PSC) were prepared with a high Young’s modulus (8.85 ± 0.24 MPa), acceptable tensile strength (4 ± 0.28 MPa), and high fatigue threshold (8.09 ± 0.5 kJ/m2). Because SNF plays the role of straw-formed hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) with PVA and CS, the formation of H-bonds between PVA chains was inhibited, leading to more free hydrophilic groups (−OH). Therefore, the water content increased significantly to as high as 87%. By fabricating the structure of straw rammed earth bricks in hydrogels, PSC had both a high Young’s modulus and a high water content, even though the crystallinity of PVA decreased. PSC also showed antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus due to CS and are expected to be further applied in biomedicine and tissue engineering.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel is a promising candidate for articular cartilage repair yet restrained by its mechanical strength and tribological property. Current work reports a newly designed PVA-based hydrogel modified by glycerol (g), bacterial cellulose (BC), and a cationic polymer poly (diallyl dimethylammonium chloride) (PDMDAAC), which is a novel cationic strengthening choice. The resultant PVA-g-BC-PDMDAAC hydrogel proves the effectiveness of this modification scheme, with a confined compressive modulus of 19.56 MPa and a friction coefficient of 0.057 at a joint-equivalent load and low sliding speed. The water content, swelling property, and creep behavior of this hydrogel are also within a cartilage-mimetic range. The properties of PVA-based hydrogels before PDMDAAC addition are likewise studied as a cross-reference. Besides, PDMDAAC-modified PVA hydrogel realizes ideal mechanical and lubrication properties with a relatively low PVA concentration (10 wt.%) and facile fabrication process, which lays a foundation for mass production and marketization in the future.

Aqueous thermocells are environment-friendly power sources capable of converting low-grade thermal energy into electricity to power small electronics in various application scenarios free from batteries . However, its poor portability and transparency, mechanical fragility, and low output performance impose a burden on its extensive application. Here, we demonstrate a highly transparent, flexible and stretchable gel with the cross-linked PVA/gelation double network frame by introducing DMSO/water binary solvent to suppress the formation of hydrogen bonds along the three dimensional directions, forming numerous microcrystalline regions. When the temperature difference is 40 K, the gel-based thermogalvanic cell achieves an open-circuit voltage of about 63 mV with the maximum power density of about 1.2 mW m -2 . By implanting a PDMS solar absorber , the assembled solar thermoelectric gel device delivers a maximum temperature difference of about 11.2 K with an open-circuit voltage up to 16.6 mV and short-circuit current of more than 100μA, respectively, upon exposure to sunshine over 12 h. This work may provide new ideas for harnessing ambient heat and solar energy to electrical energy conversion.

Delayed wound healing is a common and serious complication in diabetic patients, especially the slow healing of foot ulcers, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients and is also the most important risk factor for lower limb amputation. The multifunctional novel dressing prepared by loading the polymer nanofibers with anti-inflammatory and prohealing plant extracts can promote the wound repair of these ulcers by electrospinning technology. Liposomes are nanoparticles prepared from phospholipids and have been widely used as drug delivery systems. Liposomes can be combined with electrospun nanofibrous webs to facilitate local and sustained delivery of loaded bioactive substances. In this study, liposomes were prepared with astragaloside IV (AS) by employing a modified ethanol injection method and conducting the physical and chemical characterization (e.g., the particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, and entrapment efficiency). Astragalus polysaccharides were extracted from Astragalus membranaceus. Subsequently, we prepared the electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/astragalus polysaccharide (APS)/astragaloside IV (AS) nanofibers. The morphology of the produced ASL/APS/PVA, APS/PVA, and PVA nanofibers were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and it turns out that the addition of astragalus extract made the fiber diameter smaller and the fibers arranged neatly with no dripping. An induced diabetic rat model was built, and a diabetic ulcer model was built by total cortical resection to assess the prorepair ability of the prepared nanofibers. According to in vivo animal experiments, the nanofibrous membrane loaded with APS and ASL was reported to inhibit the occurrence of wound inflammation, enhance the deposition of collagen fibers () and the repair of regenerated epithelium (), and effectively strengthen the wound healing of diabetic rats (). In brief, PVA-loaded APS/ASL nanofibrous membranes refer to a prominent wound healing dressing material, which can effectively facilitate the healing of diabetic wounds, and they are demonstrated to be highly promising for application in diabetic wound dressings and tissue engineering.

For treating tympanic membrane (TM) perforation, a scaffold is helpful for TM repair in myringoplasty. In this work, the green-crosslinked method respectively based on four kinds of polybasic organic acids (maleic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, and malic acid) has been used to crosslink the composite nanofibrous membranes of chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for preparing the TM scaffold. The crosslinked membranes exhibit nanofibrous morphology, good physical properties, and excellent biocompatibility to promote TM cell proliferation. To summarize, the polybasic organic acids are effective and nontoxic crosslinked agents to prepare composite CS/PVA nanofiber membranes for TM scaffold.
