Significantly Improved Energy Storage Performance of PVDF Ferroelectric Films by Blending PMMA and Filling PCBM

Changhai Zhang,Tongqin Zhang,Mengjia Feng,Yang Cui,Tiandong Zhang,Yongquan Zhang,Yu Feng,Yue Zhang,Qingguo Chi,Xianli Liu

The increasing energy problem and the demand of environmental protection raise higher requirements for the development of clean energy. Dielectric capacitors have attracted lots of attention as a supporting facility of energy storage and conversion for clean energy, but their further development is limited by the low energy storage performance. In this paper, all-organic composite dielectrics were reported, with a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite dielectric with different mixing ratios as the matrix and the organic molecular semiconductor with high electron affinity [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyrate acid methyl ester (abbreviated as PCBM) as fillers. The related test results show that with the increase in the doping contents of PCBM, the energy storage density increases obviously. When the doping content of PCBM is 0.9 wt %, the PMMA/PVDF-based organic composite dielectric possesses an optimal breakdown field of 685.67 kV mm–1, accompanying excellent energy storage performances (Ue, ∼21.89 J cm–3; η, ∼70.34%). The PVDF blended with PMMA strategy not only restrains the ferroelectric polarization loss of PVDF but also improves the breakdown strength of the polymer. More importantly, the polarization and breakdown strength of the composites can be synergistically enhanced by filling with PCBM fillers.

A Robust PVDF-Assisted Composite Membrane for Tetracycline Degradation in Emulsion and Oil-Water Separation

Huijun Li,Xin Xu,Jiwei Wang,Xuefeng Han,Zhouqing Xu

Tetracycline (TC) contamination in water has progressively exacerbated the environmental crisis. It is urgent to develop a feasible method to solve this pollution in water. However, polluted water often contains oil. This paper reported a glass fiber (FG)-assisted polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hybrid membrane with dual functions: high TC degradation efficiency in emulsion and oil-water separation. It can meet the catalytic degradation of tetracycline in complex water. This membrane was decorated by coating the glass fiber with PVDF solution containing hydrophilic graphene oxide hybridized NH2-MIL-101(Fe) particles. Moreover, due to its strong mechanical strength enhanced by the glass fiber, it can be reused as TC degradation catalysts for dozens of times without cracking. Thanks to the hydrophobicity of PVDF and the surface pore size of MOFs, the prepared membrane showed a good oil-water separation performance. Besides, the hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO) and NH2-MIL-101(Fe) improved the membrane’s anti-fouling performance, allowing it to be reused as the separation membrane. Therefore, the outstanding stability and recoverability of the membrane make it as a fantastic candidate material for large-scale removal of TC as well as oil-water separation application.Keywords:GO/NH2-MIL-101(Fe);PVDF membrane;glass fiber;tetracycline degradation;oil-water separation

Enhanced output performance of piezoelectric energy harvester based on hierarchical Bi3.15Nd0.85Ti3O12 microspheres/PVDF-HFP composite

Wancheng Qin,Peng Zhou,Xinyu Xu,Muhammad Sultan Irshad,Yajun Qi,Tianjin Zhang

The inclusion of inorganic piezoelectric fillers in the polymeric matrix of flexible ferroelectric polymer synergies the piezoelectricity for wearable electronics . Herein, hierarchical Bi 3.15 Nd 0.85 Ti 3 O 12 microspheres (H-BNdT MPs) embedded in the polymeric matrix of polyvinylidene fluoride–hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) based piezoelectric thin films are fabricated by using a facile and cost-effective film-forming method, drop-casting. The composites possess improved dielectric and ferroelectric properties comparing with that of the pure PVDF-HFP film without any electrical poling treatment. More importantly, the highest outputs of an open-circuit voltage of 20 V and a short-circuit current of 1.9 μA under the repeated mechanical force of 10 N at the frequency of 2 Hz were successfully achieved. The maximum power of the optimal PEH can reach as high as 4.6 mW, corresponding to a power density of 938 μW/cm 2 , and the output electricity can light up 10 LEDs with a full-wave rectifier circuit. The enhanced output performance is attributed to the high local stress around the H-BNdT MPs arising from the hollow hierarchical architecture of the inorganic fillers . The lead-free flexible PEH is also proved to have the ability to harvest the biomechanical energy of human movements, such as finger pinching, finger tapping , and fist punching. In particular, a PEH shoe is made to harvest energy from walking and running. This PEH is confirmed to be a potential energy harvester and effective self-powered generator to drive wearable devices .

Aging retardation strategy of PVDF membranes: evaluation of free radical scavenging effect of nano-particles

Siyi Li,Xuehui Zhao,Hongwei Zhang

It is very important to reduce the oxidation of free radicals in organic membrane materials for the stability and safety of drinking water production treatment processes. This paper presents a new method for the qualitative and quantitative determination of free radicals in sodium hypochlorite solution by electron spin resonance (ESR) and salicylic acid spectrophotometry. Experiments show that the free radical scavenging rate reaches over 86% after the addition of 0.5 wt% nano-particles. PVDF–PVP/TiO2 and PVDF–PVP/CNT modified membranes are prepared by blending polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with nano titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) and carboxyl-modified multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH), and are treated in 2000 ppm sodium hypochlorite solution for 30 days. Through surface chemistry (FTIR, XRD), surface morphology (SEM), surface hydrophilicity (contact angle), surface electronegative (zeta potential) and mechanical properties tests, the changes of membrane properties are analyzed during aging. The experimental results show that the nano-particles have a quenching effect on free radicals and inhibit defluorination. It has been proved that under the action of nano-additives, the erosion of free radicals on the membrane material is reduced, the aging rate of the membrane material is decreased, and the chemical stability of the membrane material is improved. In this paper, the reason and mechanism of anti-aging of the nano-particle modified membrane are analyzed, which provides theoretical support for future membrane cleaning technology and prolonging the service life of the membrane.

Fabrication of Hierarchically Porous Carbon Nanofibers from Immiscible PAN/PVDF Polymer Blends as Electrode Materials

Gui Cheng,Zhang Yike,Jin Rui,Song Yang,Li Rong,Xing Yanjun

Most previous work on the preparation of electrode materials has usually used to grind carbon nanofibers and add non-reactive binders, which lead to limited surface area and lower electrochemical performance in electrode materials. In this study, porous carbon nanofibers were prepared from non-miscible PAN/PVDF polymer blends by electrospinning and carbonization to obtain electrode materials with high performance and high specific surface area. In the process of preparing electrode materials, carbon nanofibers can be directly prepared as electrodes with high-performance and flexibility without adding any inactive materials, such as polymer binders or electronic conductors. Results showed that PF-C-50 has the maximum specific surface area of 773 m 2 g −1 and the specific capacitance as high as 181 F/g at the current density of 0.4 A/g and 134 F/g at the current density of 1 A/g. PF-C-80 exhibits a specific capacitance as high as 156 F/g at the current density of 0.4 A/g and 117 F/g at the current density of 1 A/g with the smallest IR drop and R ct . The prepared porous carbon nanofiber electrode improves the electrochemical performance and flexibility of the electrode material. These unique structures and characteristic materials can be excellent candidates for high-performance flexible electrodes, laying a good foundation for wearable devices.

Ionic Liquid-Assisted 3D Printing of Self-Polarized β-PVDF for Flexible Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting

Xingang Liu,Yinghao Shang,Jihai Zhang,Chuhong Zhang

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies have unparalleled advantages in constructing piezoelectric devices with three-dimensional structures, which are conducive to improving the efficiency of energy harvesting. Among them, fused deposition modeling (FDM) is the most widely used thanks to its low cost and wide range of molding materials. However, as the best piezoelectric polymer, a high electroactive β-phase poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) piezoelectric device cannot be directly obtained by FDM printing because the β-crystal is unstable at the molten state. Herein, we develop for the first time ionic liquid (IL)-assisted FDM for direct printing of β-PVDF piezoelectric devices. An IL can induce and maintain β crystals during melt extrusion and FDM printing, ensuring that the β-crystal in the printed PVDF device is as high as 98.3%, which is the highest in 3D-printed PVDF as far as we know. Furthermore, the shearing force provided by the FDM facilitates the directional arrangement of the dipoles, resulting in the printed PVDF device having self-polarization characteristics without poling. Finally, the piezoelectric output voltage of the 3D-printed PVDF device is 4.7 times that of the flat PVDF device, and its area current density (17.5 nA cm–2) is more than that of the reported 3D-printed PVDF piezoelectric device in the literature by two orders of magnitude. The one-step 3D printing strategy proposed in this paper can realize the rapid preparation of complex-shaped and lightweight self-polarized β-PVDF-based piezoelectric devices for energy harvesting.

Preparation of alkali-resistant PVDF membranes via immobilization of sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) on surface

Wen Gongpu,Chen Kun,Zhang Yanhong,Zhou Yue,Pan Jun,Wang Qian,Sun Siyuan,Wang Zhaohui

A novel strategy was proposed to fabricate alkali-resistant PVDF membrane via sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS) attached to the surface of membrane and immobilized by UV-curable polyester acrylate and tri(propylene glycol) diacrylate (TPGDA). The attached anionic surfactant, SDS, on the membrane surface can resist the alkali corrosion by NaOH, and the curing of the resin can immobilize the SDS on the membrane firmly. Due to the unique alkali resistance of SDS and resin formed, the UV-curable resin-modified PVDF membrane showed greatly enhanced alkali-resistant ability. Characterization of SEM and FTIR showed that polyester acrylate and TPGDA were cured successfully under the action of 1-hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone (184) and ultraviolet light. Whiteness, differential scanning calorimeter and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer characterization showed that the modified PVDF membrane had a lower degree of dehydrofluorination than the pristine PVDF membrane after alkali treatment. Results of the detailed alkali-resistant analysis indicated that the F/C ratio of the UV-curable resin-modified PVDF membrane decreased by 2.6% after alkali treatment compared to pristine PVDF membrane decreased by 19.28%. The alkali-resistant performance was mainly attributed to the immobilized SDS. This study provided a facile and scalable method for designing alkali-resistant PVDF membrane, which shows a promising potential in the treatment of alkaline wastewater and alkaline-cleaning PVDF membrane.

Rapid and robust modification of PVDF ultrafiltration membranes with enhanced permselectivity, antifouling and antibacterial performance

Kai Cheng,Na Zhang,Na Yang,Shuai Hou,Jiahui Ma,Luhong Zhang,Yongli Sun,Bin Jiang

Zwitterionic materials are well known to possess extraordinary water affinity. However, micromolecular zwitterions have rarely been exploited for membrane hydrophilic modification. Herein, novel antifouling and antibacterial polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes with enhanced permselectivity were facilely fabricated through one-step co-deposition of dopamine and a newly synthesized micromolecular zwitterion (DMAPAPS). With the assistance of CuSO 4 /H 2 O 2 -triggered oxidation, a uniform and hydrophilic coating (water contact angle = 33°) was constructed on membrane surface in only 40 min. The impacts of the DMAPAPS concentration and coating time on membrane performance were investigated. Results showed that our strategy endowed the optimized membrane with high pure water flux of 364 L/m 2 ∙ h and BSA rejection of 98.6%. The flux recovery ratios of membrane were as high as 96.3% for bovine serum albumin, 98.1% for humic acid and 95.1% for sodium alginate after 3-cycle filtration, respectively. Moreover, the membrane displayed superior antibacterial activity towards E. coli and S. aureus as well as excellent chemical and mechanical stability. This work provides a versatile platform for the robust, time-saving and cost-effective fabrication of antifouling and antibacterial membranes.

Fabrication of in-situ polymerized UiO-66/PVDF supramolecular membranes with high anti-fouling performance

Wei Wang,Peng Zhang,Yaping Shi,Zhichao Zhang,Xin Xu,Ping Ding

The composite membrane with the advantages of high separation efficiency and wide application, has been widely concerned in the field of water purification and molecular separation. However, the common composite membrane cannot achieve continuity, or the grafting process is complex, which significantly hinders its further development. In this work, the in-situ polymerization of UiO-66/PVDF supramolecular flat membranes as the continuous and high-performance composite membrane can be easily synthesized using the supramolecular force, (such as, hydrogen bond, etc.). These supramolecular membranes exhibit good hydrophilic (61°) and anti-fouling performance for bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution with rejection rate 97.79% than the original membrane. Moreover, this membrane can achieve more MOF doping based on maintaining the membrane performance, which undoubtedly greatly improves its hydrophilicity and mechanical properties. In addition, we also characterized the porous microstructure of the UiO-66/PVDF supramolecular membrane to analyze the influence of different doping amounts on the membrane structure. This supramolecular membrane has the advantages of simple synthesis, good hydrophilicity and water separation performance, which provides a more convenient and effective way for the preparation of MOFs/polymer flat membrane, and also provides a new method and new idea for expanding the application of MOFs/polymer ultrafiltration membrane in water treatment.

PSS-PANI/PVDF composite based flexible NH3 sensors with sub-ppm detection at room temperature

Dawu Lv,Wenfeng Shen,Weigang Chen,Ruiqin Tan,Lei Xu,Weijie Song

Improved ammonia (NH 3 ) sensor is proposed based on polyaniline (PANI) with poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSS) as an additive, which was produced by in-suit polymerization of aniline on flexible porous polyvinylidene-fluoride (PVDF) membranes and then treated with PSS aqueous solution. The whole film sensor fabrication process was low-cost and convenient in operation, suitable for large-scale commercial production. The results demonstrated that the appropriate addition of PSS could significantly improve the sensor response to NH 3 . The PSS-PANI/PVDF film sensor response was improved to approximately 70%, which was 2.8 times higher than that of the pure PANI/PVDF film with 25% response towards 1 ppm NH 3 at room temperature. Furthermore, it still showed an excellent response of 9.4% for 0.1 ppm NH 3 . The fabricated film sensor showed remarkable long-term stability with response decreases less than 5% after 30 days, and excellent flexibility under 10,000 repeated bending times with a response value degradation of only 15.1% towards 1 ppm NH 3 . The flexible PSS-PANI/PVDF film offers potential applications in smart wearable devices for detecting sub-ppm NH 3 under ambient conditions.

Novel PVDF-g-NMA Copolymer for Fabricating the Hydrophilic Ultrafiltration Membrane with Good Antifouling Property

Yujia Tong,Lukuan Huang,Chengjiang Zuo,Weixing Li,Weihong Xing

Improving the hydrophilicity of the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane can change its adsorption fouling characteristics. Here, a novel amphiphilic material of PVDF grafted with N-methylolacrylamide (PVDF-g-NMA) was developed via photoinduced Cu(II)-mediated reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP). The PVDF-g-NMA ultrafiltration membrane was prepared by the nonsolvent-induced phase-separation method. The PVDF-g-NMA copolymer was characterized by 1H NMR and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The performance of the PVDF-g-NMA membrane was evaluated by determining the permeation flux, contact angle, roughness, and antifouling tests. The roughness data show that a low content of N-methylolacrylamide can effectively reduce the surface roughness of membranes by 50%, resulting in greater antifouling ability. The prepared ultrafiltration membrane containing 15 wt % PVDF-g-NMA exhibited the best hydrophilicity with an average pure water flux of up to 272.1 L·m–2·h–1, higher than that of the pure PVDF membrane (45.4 L·m–2·h–1). The contact angle of the PVDF-g-NMA ultrafiltration membrane decreased from 85.5 to 67.4°. The bovine serum albumin rejection rate of the PVDF-g-NMA membrane significantly increased from 85.7 to 92.6%, and the pure water flux recovery rate increased from 79.0 to 88.5%. The PVDF-g-NMA ultrafiltration membrane had excellent hydrophilicity and antifouling properties, which would be promising for wastewater treatment.
