A highly selective fluorescent probe ( SiROPS ) based on Si-rhodamine (SiR) towards F − was investigated. SiROPS can realize the NIR detection of F − because of the long fluorescent wavelength (λ ex = 650 nm, λ em = 669 nm). The near-IR optical and the ratiometric fluorescence type signaling were realized by employing fluoride-selective cleavage of the latent thiophosphinated probe in mixed aqueous media. The cleavage of F − to the ortho positions of dimethylphosphinothionyl group in the meso aryl involves the suppression of internal rotation upon phosphorylation of a reactive phenolate and the activating rotation of o-OH, which resulting in a large fluorescence “Turn-Off” response. The detection limit of the probe to F − was 48 nM in the dynamic range of 0.5 μ M–20 μ M. In addition, the proposed probe has been used to detect F − in water samples and toothpaste samples with satisfying results.

Silicon (Si) has been regarded as one of the most promising anodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its exceptional capacity, appropriate voltage profile, and reliable operation safety. However, poor cyclic stability and moderate rate performance have been critical drawbacks to hamper the practical application of Si-based anodes. It has been one of the central issues to develop new strategies to improve the cyclic and rate performance of the Si-based lithium-ion battery anodes. In this work, super-small metal nanoparticles (2.9 nm in diameter) are in situ synthesized and homogeneously embedded in the in situ formed nitrogen-doped carbon matrix, as demonstrated by the Si/Ag/C nanohybrid, where epoxy resin monomers are used as solvent and carbon source. With tiny amount of silver (2.59% by mass), the Si/Ag/C nanohybrid exhibits superior rate performance compared to the bare Si/C sample. Systematic structure characterization and electrochemical performance tests of the Si/Ag/C nanohybrids have been performed. The mechanism for the enhanced rate performance is investigated and elaborated. The temperature-dependent I–V behavior of the Si/Ag/C nanohybrids with tuned silver contents is measured. Based on the model, it is found that the super-small silver nanoparticles mainly increase charge carrier mobility instead of the charge carrier density in the Si/Ag/C nanohybrids. The evaluation of the total electron transportation length provided by the silver nanoparticles within the electrode also suggests significantly enhanced charge carrier mobility. The existence of tremendous amounts of super-small silver nanoparticles with excellent mechanical properties also contributes to the slightly improved cyclic stability compared to that of simple Si/C anodes.

Almost fully dense B 4 C-TiB 2 -SiC composite ceramics with high flexure strength and good fracture toughness were fabricated through in-situ reaction between B 4 C, Ti 3 SiC 2 and Si using spark plasma sintering method at a relatively low temperature of 1650 °C. The intergranular and intragranular structure containing nanoparticles with different phase were introduced into the composite ceramic. The nano and micro particles in the microstructure formed a multi-scale particles reinforced structure. The refined matrix grains and the multi-scale reinforcing particles had a synergetic effect on improving the mechanical properties of the composite ceramics. As a result, B 4 C-TiB 2 -SiC composite ceramic with 30 wt% (TiB 2 + SiC) exhibits low density and optimum mechanical properties with high flexural strength of 531.2 MPa, good fracture toughness of 5.77 MPa m 1/2 and moderate micro-hardness of 28.6 GPa.

Due to the high agglomerate propensity of Si particles, making aluminum composites with a dispersion of the reinforcement using traditional way is still a challenge. In this study, an innovative approach was utilized to prevent the agglomeration of particles using encapsulating graphene sheets by grinding. Afterwards, the milled mixtures were incorporated with Cr-coated graphite flakes, urea and starch via mechanical mixing. After being mechanically mixed and sintered at 330 °C, the porous preform was fabricated by vacuum gas pressure infiltration. Effects of graphene content (0.5, 1, 3, 5 wt%) on the microstructures and properties of thermal and mechanical were investigated. Thermal conductivity and bending strength of the graphite flakes (G f )/Si/Al composites increased by 41.4 and 300%, respectively compared to the specimens without graphene. G f /Si/Al composites with graphene mass fraction of 5% had excellent in-plane thermal conductivity of 346 W/mK and bending strength of 84 Mpa, suggesting the composites can be applied as promising thermal management materials.

Rational chemical substitution is an effective way to regulate structure and enrich property. Herein, a new noncentrosymmetric borosilicate, Ba2ScBSi2O9, was successfully synthesized by substituting CaO6 units in Ba2CaB2Si4O14 with ScO6 octahedra, with comparatively strong covalency. This substitution not only effectively prevents polymerization of the B–O groups, resulting in an intriguing structural transformation from tetrahedral-coordinated borosilicate of Ba2CaB2Si4O14 to mixed-coordinated borosilicate Ba2ScBSi2O9, but also enhances its second harmonic generation response (2 × KDP), that is nearly four times higher than its parent structure while keeping a short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge (λcutoff < 190 nm). In addition, the polar space group of Pca21 for Ba2ScBSi2O9 achieves its ferroelectric polarization reversal capability, which makes quasi-phase-matching technology possible to counteract the nonphase-matching caused by small birefringence of silicates. This work indicates the unique role of heterovalent substitution in regulating structure and performance, providing new insights for exploring borosilicate with versatile functionality.

In laser illumination, there is considerable interest in phosphor-converted laser diodes that boast high efficiency and exceptional thermal stability. Phosphor-in-glass (PiG) and phosphor-in-glass film (PiF) are highly favored for their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and ease of fabrication. To tackle the issue of low thermal conductivity of glass, a novel lithium–aluminum–silicate glass is innovatively developed. This glass induces the precipitation of spodumene crystalline phase, enhancing material stability. Utilizing solid-state sintering techniques, Y 3 Al 3.5 Ga 1.5 O 12 :Ce 3+ (YAGG:Ce) PiG is fabricated, which exhibited a luminous flux (LF) of 866.76 lm under 450 nm blue light with 3.88 W input power. Benefiting from the high thermal conductivity of sapphire substrate and the high-intensity glass system, YAGG:Ce PiF demonstrated a saturation threshold of 10.20 W, yielding an impressive LF of 2178.1 lm, which is 2.5 times that of PiG samples. Notably, the thermal conductivity increased significantly from 2.2 W m −1 K −1 (PiG) to 7.0 W m −1 K −1 (PiF), surpassing traditional organic resin materials. To validate the practicality of the two-color converters, it integrates them into both starlight lamp and laser flashlight modules for encapsulation, thereby generating attractive green light in various environments. This design holds the potential to become the ideal choice for the next generation of high-power, high-brightness laser illumination.

Reactive polyurethane (RPU) films in a solvent-free medium exhibit exceptional stability and mechanical properties due to their highly cross-linked structure. Achieving inherent fire resistance, waterproofing, and high mechanical performance in RPUs is challenging. Here, we prepared an intrinsic flame retardant, waterproof, and flexible RPU using a P/Si synergistic system with hydroxylated ammonium polyphosphate aAPP/Si-RPU via in-situ polyaddition of NCO-double capped prepolymer and polyol components, including polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and aAPP. The aAPP was synthesized through cation exchange between diethylene glycol amine (DGA) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP). Compared to pure RPU, aAPP/Si 15% -RPU showed a 60.3 % reduction in peak heat release rate (pk-HRR) and a 14.1 % reduction in total heat release (THR), with the limiting oxygen index (LOI) increasing from 18.2 % to 27.8 %. Mechanical properties and hydrophobicity improved, with tensile strength at 31.9 ± 1.9 MPa, elongation at break at 522.7 ± 20.3 %, and a water contact angle of 127.1°. The balance of properties was due to ordered microphase separation from the organic–inorganic hybrid structure of aAPP and PDMS, where aAPP particles enhanced microstructure and crosslinked interactions, and the Si-O bond in PDMS provided flexibility and water resistance. This study presents a strategy to resolve the conflict between rigidity and toughness, offering design ideas for intrinsic flame retardant polyurethane.

The development of efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts composed of low cost and earth abundant elements is imperative for several energy systems. It has been reported that metal-free co-doped materials play a key role in the oxygen reduction reactions. However, a Si/F co-doped material has never been considered as an electrocatalyst for the ORR. Herein, we report a Si–C–F decorated three-dimensional porous carbon material by a facile pyrolysis of a mixture of D-glucose, ammonium fluoride and SiO2 nanoparticles in an argon atmosphere. It shows an excellent electrocatalytic performance with an onset potential of E = 0.24 V and a limiting current density of I = 4.5 mA cm−2 which is better than that of traditional electrocatalysts under neutral conditions. This outstanding electrocatalytic performance is due to the synergistic effect of silicon and fluorine which causes a change in the charge distribution and energetic characteristics of the Si–C–F decorated porous carbon material. For the practical application, a microbial fuel cell equipped with this electrocatalyst as the cathode reveals a high maximum power output and open circuit voltage (1026 mW m−2 and 780 mV), which are higher than those of commercial 20% Pt/C catalysts (913 mW m−2 and 750 mV).

SiO2–NiO aerogels with different molar ratios of Si/Ni (n(Si/Ni)) were prepared by a sol–gel method and atmospheric pressure drying technology. The morphology and structure of SiO2–NiO aerogels were characterized by XRD, BET, XRF, and SEM methods. The equilibrium adsorption performance of thiophene or benzothiophene on the SiO2–NiO aerogels were studied at three different adsorption temperatures (298, 313, 333 K). The adsorption equilibrium data of thiophene on SiO2–NiO aerogels were more in line with the Temkin model at the lower temperature, while they were well fitted with both Langmuir and Temkin isotherms at the higher temperature. The maximum saturation adsorption capacities obtained by the Langmuir isotherms at different temperature decreased in the order qm(298 K) > qm(313 K) ≈ qm(333 K). The maximum saturation adsorption capacities of thiophene or benzothiophene on SiO2–NiO aerogels with different n(Si/Ni) values at 298 K decreased in the order SiO2–NiO-23 > SiO2–NiO-74 > SiO2–NiO-6. The maximum saturation adsorption capacities of thiophene and benzothiophene on SiO2–NiO-23 aerogels are 6.4564 and 2.1316 mgS/g, respectively. Both the amount of adsorption active sites and the textural structure of aerogels could significantly affect the adsorption performance. The higher the nickel content, specific surface area, pore volume, and larger pore size of the aerogel, the larger the adsorption capacity. The absolute value of adsorption heat of thiophene on SiO2–NiO aerogels increased gradually with the increase of n(Si/Ni) (the reduction of the Ni content).

Amorphous rhenium nanoparticles modified silicon nanowires were prepared via reducing Re ion by Si H bonds, which were employed to electrocatalysize the hydrogen evolution reaction because amorphous structure may have excellent catalytic activity. It is interesting that an obvious self-activation for Re/Si catalysts was observed with the current density enhanced by 2.2 times its previous value at 400 mV after a 3,000 s of continuous cyclic voltammetry scanning, and the catalytic performance remained steady thereafter. The optimal electrocatalytic performance was found with the Re: Si mass ratio of 31.1: 68.9, resulting in a Tafel slope of 81 mV·dec −1 and overpotential of 100 mV at current density of 10 mA·cm −2 .

MgAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) containing tripolyphosphate (P3O105–) (P-LDHs) were prepared by the anion exchange method; subsequently, aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) was grafted onto the surface of P-LDHs to prepare S-MgAl LDHs (S-LDHs) through induced hydrolysis silylation. The dispersion, flame retardancy, and smoke suppression of N-LDHs (MgAl LDHs with nitrate in its interlayer), P-LDHs, and S-LDHs in polyurethane elastomer (PUE) were investigated. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that S-LDHs could disperse uniformly in PUE. The cone calorimetry and smoke density test indicated that S-LDHs performed best in flame retardancy and smoke suppression. By analyzing the char layer with Laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), it could be concluded that, besides the catalytic charring effect of LDHs, the stable structure of −P(═O)–O–C– and −P(═O)–O–Si– could improve the thermal oxidative resistance and stabilize the char layer, resulting in better flame retardancy and smoke suppression.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a fundamental electrochemical reaction to produce hydrogen gas from the electrolysis of water, and has been regarded as an attractive solution to many energy challenges. In the past few decades, platinum has been widely demonstrated to split water into hydrogen gas at high reaction rates and low overpotentials. Nevertheless, decreasing the loading of Pt in the designed electrocatalysts is very significant. However, with low Pt loading, it is challenging to maintain excellent catalytic performance. Here we report a Pt–Au–Si ternary nanocomposite as a highly active catalyst for the HER. The optimal composition of Pt–Au–Si was determined to be 7.2 : 31.3 : 61.5 (Pt : Au : Si, mass ratio) with a Tafel slope of only 24 mV dec−1. To be specific, the mass activity of the Pt–Au–SiNW-2 catalyst was 6.5 fold that of a 40 wt% Pt/C catalyst at an overpotential of 60 mV. More importantly, the cathodic current density even surpassed 40 wt% Pt/C when the overpotential was larger than 0.17 V (the corresponding current density was 108 mA cm−2). The outstanding catalytic performance might be derived from the synergy of the respective properties of the three components: the fast hydrogen adsorption rate on Pt, the quick migration of the adsorbed hydrogen atoms on Au and the rapid hydrogen evolution rate on Si. This research opens up a novel strategy to prepare highly efficient catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reactions.
