The investigation of highly efficient catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (ER-CO2) is the most critical challenge to commercialize conversion and utilization of CO2. Herein we propose a new and very promising catalyst, high crystallinity Sn crystals on Ni foam (Sn@f-Ni), for the electroreduction reaction of CO2 in potassium bicarbonate aqueous solution. The catalyst is fabricated in situ on a pretreated Ni foam substrate through a galvanostatic electrodeposition strategy. SEM and XRD demonstrate that high crystallinity Sn crystals, with an average size of 2–3 μm, evenly dispersed on the Ni foam support can be reproducibly obtained. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the Sn@f-Ni electrode at the deposition current of 15 mA exhibits superior performance in promoting the ER-CO2. Tafel measurements show that except for electrodes with a deposition current of 5 mA, the Tafel slopes of the other four electrodes are all above 100 mV dec−1, which is consistent with a rate-determining initial electron transfer to CO2 to form a surface adsorbed intermediate, a mechanism that is commonly invoked for metal electrodes. A stable composition of syngas can be obtained by electrolysis at −1.7 V potential (vs. Ag/AgCl), indicating that the Sn surface with high crystallinity conforms to the Heyrovsky–Volmer mechanism at a potential of −1.7 V. The ratio of CO and H2 generation was about 1 : 2, meaning it could be used as syngas for preparing some valuable fuels. This work provided an efficient method to convert the surplus CO2 to valuable syngas.

SnO 2 -based anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIB) suffers from excessive volume expansion and low conductivity, resulting in very poor capacity stability and rate capability. To solve the problems, three kinds of SnO 2 /Sn@carbon heterostructures were synthesized by a salt template following calcination using tartaric acid, p-phthalic acid and ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid with different carboxyl groups as carbon sources, respectively. The acidity, carbon atoms number and position affect the ratio of SnO 2 /Sn, the morphology and content of derived carbon, the advantage crystal plane and the surface defects of SnO 2 . The carbon atoms located at carboxyl are transformed to CO and formed pores, and the carbon atoms at alkane chain are polycondensed and transformed to amorphous carbon during annealing process. The SnO 2 /Sn@C derived from tartaric acid (SnO 2 /Sn@TA) has the largest ratio of SnO 2 /Sn, which fixed on graphene-like porous carbon , exposed the most surface defects and more high energy crystal plane. The specific structure ensures structural stability and ultrahigh capacity, lower Li + diffusion barrier energy and super rate capability. It exhibits the charge/discharge capacity of 1059.7/1064.4 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 after 1500 cycles and super rate performance of 399.3/404.5 mAh g −1 at 6 A g −1 , which are superior to most reference data.

Acetic acid (CH 3 COOH) detection with high selectivity at low temperatures is significant due to its wide applications in the chemical, medical, and catering industries. Chemiresistive gas sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) are widely used in detecting various gases, but it is necessary to develop MOSs with novel nanostructures to enhance gas-sensing performance. Herein, a series of bismuth subcarbonate (Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 , abbreviated as BCO) microspheres with highly permeable lamellar structure and tunable Sn-doping ratios (0–5 at%) is synthesized by controlling kinetics equilibrium of the hydrothermal reaction. The sensor based on 3 at% Sn-doped BCO microspheres exhibits excellent gas-sensing performances toward acetic acid (10 ppm), including high sensitivity ( S = 8.3), fast recovery speed (10 s), long-term stability (over 30 days), and good selectivity at a low temperature (150 °C). The unique permeable lamellar structure assembled from 2D Sn-doped BCO nanosheets and rich Sn 4+ doping-induced active sites is mainly responsible for the enhanced gas-sensing performances. Moreover, a new acetic acid reaction process is revealed via in situ diffuse reflectance infrared transform spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations indicate that Sn-doped BCO has a higher acetic acid adsorption energy and a larger charge transfer than pristine BCO.

The cation displacement closely related to the local symmetry and corner-connected oxygen octahedral rotation are the structural origin of macroscopic properties in ABO 3 perovskite oxides. This work describes in detail the relationship between microstructure and macroscopic properties in 0.78BT-0.12CT-0.1BZS ceramic, which achieves the enhanced strain of 0.19 % with a hysteresis of 6.56 %. The atomic level structure is revealed by aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (AC-STEM). The AC-STEM HAADF images reveal the coexisting of polar nanoregions with O and T symmetries. Such a microstructure has a lower energy barrier, facilitating dynamic polarization rotation flexibly under external stimuli. The AC-STEM ABF image reveals the existence of the BO 6 octahedral rotation, with rotation patterns of the a 0 b 0 c 0 and a - b + c - , and rotation angles are quantitatively measured. The BO 6 octahedral rotation and cation displacement are found to be consistent, the greater octahedral rotation with greater cation displacements. These results have important implications for understanding the structural origin of the excellent properties in ferroelectrics .

The development of extremely active bifunctional non-noble electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal for water splitting but remains challenging. Herein, self-supported Ni–Fe–Sn electrocatalysts were fabricated on nickel foam (NF) through a simple and facile pulse electrodeposition process. Under optimal conditions, the prepared Ni–Fe–Sn electrocatalysts exhibited excellent bifunctional properties in alkaline medium and required ultralow overpotentials of only 27 and 201 mV for HER and OER, respectively, to reach the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Importantly, the same Ni–Fe–Sn electrocatalyst can be assembled as the anode and the cathode in a two-electrode system. It demanded a fairly low applied voltage of 1.55, 1.72, and 1.87 V to produce 10, 50, and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, and exhibited excellent long-term stability. The excellent electrocatalytic water splitting performance of the Ni–Fe–Sn film was mainly associated with its intrinsic catalytic activity derived from the modulation of the electronic structures among Ni, Fe, and Sn by using the appropriate atomic ratio of Ni: Fe: Sn.

Ultrafine SnO2/Sn nanoparticles encapsulated into an adjustable meso-/macroporous carbon matrix have been successfully fabricated by the in situ SiOx sacrificial strategy. The control over the void space in the carbon matrix effectively improves the accessibility of the SnO2/Sn toward an electrolyte solution. More importantly, the void space also provides an efficient means to accommodate the mechanical stress caused by the volume change of the SnO2/Sn over cycles. As a result, the enhanced electrolyte accessibility and suppressed mechanical stress improve the electrochemical performance regarding reversible capacity, cyclic stability, and rate capability. A reversible capacity of 1105 mAh g–1 is still retained after 290 cycles at 200 mAg–1, and the capacity still can keep at 107 mAh g–1 at a high current density of 10 A g–1.

As integrated circuit technology scales toward the Angstrom era, the limitations of traditional spin-coated wet photoresists-specifically regarding stochastic defects and pattern collapse-have become critical bottlenecks for high-numerical-aperture extreme ultraviolet (high-NA EUV) lithography. Consequently, dry photoresists deposited via molecular layer deposition (MLD) have emerged as a transformative solution, offering atomic-level thickness control and superior uniformity. Here, we report a tin-based hybrid dry photoresist synthesized via MLD using tetrakis(dimethylamino)tin and 2-butene-1,4-diol. A distinctive feature of this material is its tunable polarity, governed by the development modality: wet development in an ammonia solution yields a positive-tone resist, while dry development using fluorine-based inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching results in a negative-tone profile. Under 50 keV electron beam exposure (wet development) conditions, we achieved an outstanding resolution limit of 7 nm for a single line, whilst under EUV exposure conditions, we achieved a resolution limit of 18 nm for a single line. To decode the underlying physics of this dual-tone behavior, we employed a rigorous multiscale approach combining in-situ characterization (XPS, TEM, EDS, and EUV-irradiated mass spectrometry) with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These theoretical and experimental insights elucidate the specific bond-breaking and reorganization mechanisms driving the polarity switch. This work not only presents a high-performance candidate for next-generation lithography but also establishes a fundamental framework for the mechanistic design of advanced dry photoresists.

The synergistic effect in a bimetallic oxide usually plays a vital role in determining the behavior of supported-metal catalysts. We show the unique synergy in a Sn x Mn 1 O y oxide, which can boost the hydrogenation catalysis of supported Pt nanoparticles for selective conversion of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL). On a series of Pt/Sn x Mn 1 O y catalysts with a similar Pt loading ( ca. 0.44 wt%) and a controlled Pt size ( ca. 2.7 nm), the intrinsic TOF presents a volcano-like dependence on Pt 0 sites and Lewis acidity, which is determined by the variable synergistic effect between MnO y and SnO y . The optimal Pt/Sn 0.8 Mn 1 O y catalyst exhibits a high i TOF of 2709 h −1 and achieves 100% selectivity to GVL at 99% conversion of LA at 120 ℃ and 2 MPa of H 2 . DFT calculations demonstrate that the incorporation of Sn can provide a lower energy barrier for the crucial elementary reactions.

It is important to inhibit the food-derived, potentially hazardous chemical glycated lipids by natural products. A model system was established and the products are identified to study the inhibitory mechanism of four types of catechin, resveratrol (RES), and the synthetic antioxidants butylated hydroxylanisole (BHA) and tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) on the formation of carboxymethyl 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylethanolamine (CM-DPPE) by determining hydroxyl radical (OH·), Amadori-1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylethanolamine (Amadori-DPPE) and glyoxal (GO). The results show that the inhibitory rates of catechin and RES on the content of CM-DPPE in the model system are higher than those of BHA and TBHQ. There are at least two inhibitory mechanisms of antioxidants on CM-DPPE. (1) Antioxidants scavenge OH·, which blocks the process of Amadori-DPPE oxidation to form CM-DPPE. (2) Antioxidants trap GO, which blocks the reaction between GO and DPPE to form CM-DPPE. This research will reveal the inhibitory mechanisms of natural antioxidants on glycated lipids from the aspect of scavenging OH· and trapping GO. Practical Application Food manufacturers should pay attention on the production of glycated lipids in food processing. This study will provide the theoretical basis for the use of natural products to inhibit the formation of food-derived glycated lipids. Natural products, such as catechin and resveratrol, can substitute chemical synthesis antioxidants, such as butylated hydroxylanisole and tert-butylhydroquinone, in food processing, which inhibit the formation of glycated lipids.

Solution deposition approaches play an important role in reducing the manufacturing cost of Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) thin film solar cells. Here, we present a novel precursor-based solution approach to fabricate highly efficient CZTSe solar cells. In this approach, low-cost elemental Cu, Zn, Sn, and Se powders were simultaneously dissolved in the solution of thioglycolic acid and ethanolamine, forming a homogeneous CZTSe precursor solution to deposit CZTSe nanocrystal thin films. Based on high-quality CZTSe absorber layer, pure selenide CZTSe solar cell with a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 8.02% has been achieved without antireflection coating.

Three transition metal oxides (Fe 3 O 4 , CeO 2 and SnO 2 ) modified Zn/Ti–layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were successfully synthesized. These materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectrum (UV–vis) for the purpose of confirming the formation of good crystal structure. Comparing with original layered double hydroxides, the transition metal oxides modified Zn/Ti layered double hydroxide materials show narrower band gap, larger surface area, smaller pore volume, pore size distribution, and higher removal efficiency for acid red 14 under visible light. The decomposition efficiency of acid red 14 was all over 92% after 120 min. In addition, the thermal regeneration for re-use of layered double hydroxide materials after photodegradation was feasible for at least four cycles (degradation amount still all over 80%). Furthermore, the kinetic parameters, intermediates and possible photocatalytic pathways for acid red 14 decomposed by these transition metal oxides modified Zn/Ti layered double hydroxide materials were also investigated carefully.

Novel protocol towards multifunctional magnetic organic–inorganic core–shell nanostructured catalysts of Fe3O4@SN/HPW@CG–Ag with tailored properties are presented in this work. Such nanocomposites congregate the properties and functions of a single component into a whole. For instance, Fe3O4 cores protected by amino-functionalized SiO2 shell endowed the composites with superparamagnetism (28.6 emu g−1) and thereby facilitate the process of separation and recovery. Phosphotungstic acid, as a bridging agent, provided a strong interaction for the anchoring of glutaraldehyde cross-linked chitosan onto the surface of Fe3O4@SN. More interestingly, chitosan could simultaneously behave as a stabilizer and reductant for the in situ synthesis of “green” Ag NPs without addition of any other reducing agent or organic solvent, and Ag NPs provided the compounds with a catalytic performance. Further the size, loading of Ag NPs and the thickness of the chitosan layer were all controllable. Meaningfully, the as-synthesized catalyst Fe3O4@SN/HPW@CG–Ag exhibited an exceptional catalytic performance for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol in the presence of sodium borohydride (the reaction was accomplished within 7 min) and could be reused at least 10 times with good stability by means of convenient magnetic separation. Thence, the design philosophy of the multifunctional robust Ag-based nanocatalysts may pave the way for the synthesis of other catalyst systems with long-term stability.
