Continuous electroreduction of carbon dioxide to formate on Tin nanoelectrode using alkaline membrane cell configuration in aqueous medium

Tao Lei,Xia Zhang,Joey Jung,Yixiao Cai,Xiaofan Hou,Qi Zhang,Jinli Qiao

Using electrochemical reduction to convert CO 2 into useful small molecule fuels represents a value-added approach to the simultaneous generation of alternative fuels and environmental remediation of carbon emissions from the continued use of conventional fuels. Here, we report a novel flow cell design for CO 2 electroreduction. The alkaline ion-exchange membranes are used to separate anolyte from aqueous catholyte, and the commercial Sn particles are deposited over a carbon support, which serves as the cathode. Various influence factors on the electrochemical reduction of gaseous CO 2 into fuel are investigated, including a selection of different alkaline-exchange membranes, time duration of the electrolysis, current density and flow rate of electrolyte on the produced formate as a target fuel. Three alkaline membranes (A901, FAD and Yichen) and an acidic membrane (Naffion 117) are used. The maximum Faradaic Efficiencies (FE) of formate formation are 82.8% (Yichen), 79.2% (A901) and 90.1% (FAD), which are comparable to and even higher than that of Nafion 117 membrane (89.2%). In particular, the FAD alkaline membrane showed an applicable prospect with cell voltage of 2.85   V, lower than when using Nafion 117 membrane. We also successfully achieve the formate production rate over 1.47   mmol   m −2   s −1 at a working current density of 50   mA   cm −2 over 60   min continuous’ operation, allowing the formate concentration up to 1.9   g   L −1 . These encouraging results reveal that different ion-exchange membranes have obvious impact on the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (ERC).

Humidity-resistant hydrogen sensors based on rare-earth-doped tin dioxide nanofibers with hydrophobic mesoporous silica sieve encapsulation

Xi Yin Yang,Jiang Long Pan,Sha Sha Wang,Dong Chen,Yan Chun Wang,Shi Kun Wang,Limao Cairang,Zhen Xing Zhang,Geng Zhi Sun,Xiao Jun Pan,Jin Yuan Zhou

Air humidity is a major factor that degrades the performance and long-term stability of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) based gas sensors. In this work, we propose an encapsulation strategy by coating a mesoporous silica molecular sieve (SBA-15) on rare earth doped tin oxide (RE-SnO 2 ) nanofibers for humidity-resistant hydrogen detection. In this design, the hydrophobic SBA-15 sieve layer effectively blocks the water molecules without affecting hydrogen diffusion, while the RE dopant greatly improves the responsivity and lowers down the operating temperature of the sensors, As a result, the Er-SnO 2 /SBA-15 and Tb-SnO 2 /SBA-15 sensors respectively show the maximum response values of 27.71 and 33.68 (to 10 ppm hydrogen at 280 °C, 4.67 and 5.67 times that of the bare SnO 2 ones, respectively), short response/recovery time (< 1.0 s / < 1.0 s), as well as a low limit of detection for hydrogen (200 ppb) and a good gas selectivity . Under the protection of the SBA-15 sieve layer, the response retention of the sensors is significantly improved when the humidity increases from 25% to 85% RH (Er-doping, from 38.8% to 60.0%; Tb-doping, form 25.6–57.8%). Besides, further analysis on enhancement mechanism of response indicates that the SBA-15 coating contribute about 1/3 of the response enhancements via its own hydrogen physical adsorption capacity and the induced oxygen vacancies during the calcination processes.

Maillard Reaction Inspired Microexplosion toward Fast Synthesis of Two-Dimensional Mesoporous Tin Oxides for Efficient Chemiresistive Gas Sensing

Fengluan Jiang,Wenhe Xie,Yu Deng,Keyu Chen,Jichun Li,Xin-Yu Huang,Hongxiu Yu,Yaobang Li,Limin Wu,Yonghui Deng

Two-dimensional (2D) mesoporous transition metal oxides are highly desired in various applications, but their fast and low-cost synthesis remains a great challenge. Herein, a Maillard reaction inspired microexplosion approach is applied to rapidly synthesize ultrathin 2D mesoporous tin oxide (mSnO2). During the microexplosion between granular ammonia nitrate with melanoidin at high temperature, the organic species can be carbonized and expanded rapidly due to the instantaneous release of gases, thus producing ultrathin carbonaceous templates with rich functional groups to effectively anchor SnO2 nanoparticles on the surface. The subsequent removal of carbonaceous templates via calcination in air results in the formation of 2D mSnO2 due to the confinement effect of the templates. Pd nanoparticles are controllably deposited on the surface of 2D mSnO2 via in situ reduction, forming ultrathin 2D Pd/mSnO2 nanocomposites with thicknesses of 6–8 nm. Owing to the unique 2D mesoporous structure with rich oxygen defects and highly exposed metal–metal oxide interfaces, 2D Pd/mSnO2 exhibits excellent sensing performance toward acetone with high sensitivity, a short response time, and good selectivity under low working temperature (100 °C). This fast and convenient microexplosion synthesis strategy opens up the possibility of constructing 2D porous functional materials for various applications including high-performance gas sensors.

Masked second-shell sulfur coordinating atomically dispersed Pd on tin oxide boosts the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide

Yunhua Li,Shiyu Zheng,Yuting He,Shui Yang,Wei-Hsiang Huang,Chih-Wen Pao,Zhiwei Hu,Xiaoqing Huang

The coordination environments of isolated metals significantly influence the catalytic properties of materials. However, challenges persist in the precise modulation of these microenvironments. In this study, we achieved atomically dispersed Pd on sulfur-doped tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) through the controlled oxidation of SnS 2 nanosheets pre-loaded with single-atom Pd (Pd/SnS 2 ). Our findings reveal that the synthesized catalyst features a central single-atom Pd, which coordinates with oxygen and tin in the first coordination shell and sulfur binding tin in the second shell. The coordination of isolated Pd with sulfur in the out-of-plane second shell layer enhances oxygen adsorption while inhibiting O O dissociation, thus directing hydrogen peroxide selectivity. This results in a higher productivity and durability of hydrogen peroxide compared to pristine Pd/SnS 2 and traditional samples. This work presents an effective strategy to tailor and preserves the coordination micro-environment of central single-atom metals during catalytic reactions.

In situ one step growth of amorphous tin oxide electron transport layer for high-performance perovskite solar cells

Wenlin Du,Zhe Wan,Jingyi Zhu,Xin Liu,Li Chen,Shuxia Li,Ning Kang,Chenglong Wang

Tin oxide used in electron transport layer (ETL) exhibits key role in transmitting electrons and blocking holes in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) device. However, crystal tin oxide nanoparticles (NPs) become necessary to form SnO2 film by method of spin-coating, resulting in possible surface defect and cracks among SnO2 NPs, corresponding to unsatisfied performance PSCs. Herein, an amorphous tin oxide thin film is creatively in situ grew onto Fluorine-doped Tin Oxide (FTO) substrate as ETL. The designed solar cell device with structure of FTO/SnO2/MAPbI3/Sprio-OMeTAD/Ag owns a champion photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 17.64%, 76.20% of filling coefficient (FF), and 1.09 V of open-circuit voltage (Voc), in comparing with 16.43%, 64.35% and 1.05 V for control group (crystal tin oxide as ETL), respectively. Besides, the champion device keeps 83.33% of initial PCE under nitrogen (N2) condition for one month, in comparison with 76.09% for control group. This work provides a viable strategy for facile preparing amorphous tin oxide film based ETL in perovskite solar cells.

Engineering tin dioxide quantum dots-coated iron oxide nanorods as sulfur host for polysulfides-immobile lithium-sulfur battery

Jing Xu,Rui Wang,Huizi Songtian,Tianli Han,Huigang Zhang,Jinyun Liu

Quantum dots (QDs) commonly have high activity and strong adsorption capability, making them to be quite promising for energy-storage systems. Here, we develop a SnO 2 QDs-coated rice-shaped Fe 2 O 3 nanorod as a high-performance sulfur host for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Small size of SnO 2 QDs and polar Fe 2 O 3 reduce the loss of polysulfides and thereby suppress shuttle effect efficiently, which is verified by density functional theory (DFT) investigations on adsorption energies. The Fe 2 O 3 /SnO 2 QDs@S cathode displays a high Coulombic efficiency of 97.4 % after 100 cycles along with a stable capacity of 475 mAh g –1 . Investigations on rate-performance indicate that the capacity of Fe 2 O 3 /SnO 2 QDs@S cathode is able to recover to the initial values even after three rounds of repeated measurements, showing a good reversibility. It is expected that the stable capacity and Coulombic efficiency during charge-discharge at different conditions, and the strategy of coating QDs on nanorods would find general applications for developing QDs-enhanced energy-storage systems.

Electrochemically synthesized Tin micro-nanometer powders for visible light photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B dye from polluted water

Lu Yukun,Zhang Yaojie,Zhang Jiale,Li Zhaoyang,Hu Feiyang,Pan Duo,Melhi Saad,Shi Xuetao,Amin Mohammed A.,El-Bahy Zeinhom M.,Shao Qian

Tin (Sn) micro-nanoparticles with special pine tree dendritic morphology were synthesized by using tin foil as the anode and titanium as the cathode through simple anodization method. Surprisingly, it is found that the morphology of Sn particles is closely related to factors such as the type of electrolyte, the concentration of the electrolyte, and the different applied voltages, and briefly discussed the influence of various factors on the growth of Sn particles. In addition, Sn particles are calcined under different temperature conditions to obtain Sn/SnO 2 hybrid materials with different tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) contents. The changes in morphology and the phase of SnO 2 crystal lattices were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively, which proved the successful synthesis of Sn/SnO 2 mixed materials. Finally, the Sn/SnO 2 hybrid material with metal-doped modified semiconductor properties was used to photocatalytic degradation of simulated organic pollutants rhodamine B (RhB). It was found that the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the Sn/SnO 2 hybrid material under simulated sunlight conditions is near 90% in 5 h. Therefore, this work provides a convenient and effective environmental protection approach for the treatment of architecture and industrial dyes. Graphical Abstract Tin (Sn) micro-nanoparticles with special pine tree dendritic morphology are synthesized through simple anodization method, and the final product Sn/SnO 2 particles after different heat treatments show superior photocatalytic degradation of RhB under simulated solar light.

1D Tin(II)-Based Chiral Hybrid Perovskite Single Crystals with Extremely Distorted Inorganic Chains for Second Harmonic Generation

Kezheng Tao,Qiang Li,Qingfeng Yan

The organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides with chiral structures have attracted great attentions in the field of optoelectronic functional materials, especially for nonlinear optics. To date, second harmonic generation (SHG) properties of several classes of chiral hybrid halides with different metal ions have been reported. However, SHG-active tin(II)-based chiral materials are rarely explored, hindering deep understandings of the relationship between their structures and SHG properties. Herein, Sn 2+ ions are successfully introduced into chiral hybrid perovskites, and four new species of chiral hybrid perovskites ( R / S -α-PEA)SnX 3 (X = Cl and Br, PEA = phenylethylammonium) are obtained. The as-grown crystals are in P 2 1 2 1 2 1 space group, with highly distorted [SnX 6 ] octahedral units forming 1D chain structures in the lattice, due to the effect of stereochemically active lone pair 5s 2 electrons in Sn 2+ . Such crystals have an SHG response of ≈1.4× Y-cut α-quartz for ( S -α-PEA)SnBr 3 and ≈0.9× Y-cut α-quartz for ( S -α-PEA)SnCl 3 at 1020 nm excitation, with high polarization ratio of SHG signals as well as wide bandgaps and transparency windows in the meanwhile. This work opens up a new platform for discovering more novel tin(II)-based chiral perovskites with superior nonlinear optical properties in the future.

Wetting and Reaction Behavior of TiN and TiO2 with Different Mold Fluxes for High Ti-Bearing Stainless Steel

Chen Zhuo,Yu Binqi,Yao Tingfeng,Du Weitong,Ma Jianchao

The wettability and reaction behavior of mold flux with different basicity on TiN and TiO 2 substrates were investigated at up to 1400 °C by the sessile drop method, which can provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the composition of the mold flux for high Ti-bearing steel. As the basicity increased, the mold flux exhibited better wettability and a stronger interfacial reaction with TiN. Thus, it was easier to absorb the TiN inclusion in the order of CaO–SiO 2 -based flux (CS) > CaO–SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 -based flux (CSA) > CaO–Al 2 O 3 -based flux (CA). Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy showed that the interfacial reaction was also related to basicity. There was a visible and regular interfacial reaction layer between TiN and CS and the CSA flux, which was produced by the redox reaction between the SiO 2 in the slag and the TiN substrate, whereas there was no interfacial reaction layer between TiN and the CA flux. As the basicity decreased, the mold flux exhibited better wettability and a stronger interfacial reaction with TiO 2 ; thus, it was easier to absorb the TiO 2 inclusion in the order of CA > CSA > CS. There was also a visible and regular interfacial reaction layer between TiN and the three fluxes, which was produced by the dissolution of TiO 2 and then reacted with CaO to generate CaTiO 3 .

Understanding the anchoring effect on Li plating with Indium Tin oxide layer functionalized hosts for Li metal anodes

Xiaolin Yan,Fangjun Ye,Yinggan Zhang,Liang Lin,Baisheng Sa,Fang Liu,Junjie Li,Laisen Wang,Jie Lin,Qingshui Xie,Dong-Liang Peng

Li dendrites caused by nonuniform Li plating and locally concentrated ion/electron flux would give rise to poor cycling performance and safety issues of short-circuit and so on. Herein, a functional nanolayer consisting of Indium Tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles on 3D Cu foam was fabricated as case study to understand the mechanism of metal oxides on anchoring Li metal spots and how initial Li nucleation influences the following dendrites growth. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, it is demonstrated that not only the pristine metal oxides have higher binding energy with Li atom, but also in situ formed alloy phase during alloying process performs a great importance on homogeneous nucleation, thus leading to ordered ion/electron distribution and fast kinetics. Therefore, excellent wettability and even self-propagation behavior between ITO-Cu foam and molten Li are achieved, meanwhile the half cells with ITO-Cu foam electrodes exhibit an ultralow nucleation overpotential of 2 mV under 0.5 mA cm −2 . When the designed ITO-Cu foam@Li anodes is matched with LFP (LiFePO 4 ) cathodes, the constructed full cells can empower superior cycling stability for over 1000 cycles at 5C (3.4 mA cm −2 ), and remarkable specific capacity (149 mAh g −1 ) and capacity retention (80% for 250 cycles) even with ultrahigh mass loading (15.3 mg cm −2 ), which provides an avenue to regulate Li deposition/dissolution for high energy Li metal batteries.

Understanding the electrochemical behavior of Sn(II) in choline chloride-ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent for tin powders preparation

Zhiwei Wang,Mingqiang Cheng,Jiaojiao Bu,Lei Cheng,Juanjian Ru,Yixin Hua,Ding Wang

Tin is one of the vital substances in the material and chemical industry. Deep eutectic solvent (DES) possesses excellent physicochemical properties for metal preparation. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of Sn(II) and metallic tin preparation in choline chloride-ethylene glycol (ChCl-EG) DES were investigated. Linear sweep voltammetry is carried out to study the effects of substrate material (Ni, Cu, Pt, C, Fe, Al, W, glassy carbon (GC) and Ti), temperature (313–353 K) and SnCl 2 concentration (10–100 mM) on the electrochemical behavior of Sn(II)/Sn. Results demonstrate that metallic tin is easier to be prepared on the Ni electrode, and increasing temperature and SnCl 2 concentration both facilitate the reduction of Sn(II). Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) shows that the main form of Sn(II) is [SnCl 3 ] - . Chronoamperometric tests indicate that with the increase of applied potential, the nucleation of Sn(II) on the nickel electrode becomes close to the instantaneous nucleation. Simultaneously, the nucleation rate and the number of active sites on the electrode surface increase significantly. Pure tin with a dendritic structure could be prepared with higher current efficiency of 96.4% and lower energy consumption of 320.5 kW·h·t −1 without any additives. All these studies provide a fundamental basis for the preparation of tin powders in ChCl-EG DES.

A lithium–tin fluoride anode enabled by ionic/electronic conductive paths for garnet-based solid-state lithium metal batteries

Zhang Lei,Meng Qian-Kun,Feng Xiang-Ping,Shen Ming,Zhang Yu-Qing,Zhuang Quan-Chao,Zheng Run-Guo,Wang Zhi-Yuan,Cui Yan-Hua,Sun Hong-Yu,Liu Yan-Guo

The high energy density and stability of solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) have garnered great attention. Garnet-type oxides, especially Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO), with high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, and stability to Li metal anode, are promising solid-state electrolyte (SSEs) materials for SSLMBs. However, Li/LLZTO interface issues including high interface resistance, inhomogeneous Li deposition, and Li dendrite growth have hindered the practical application of SSLMBs. Herein, a multi-functional Li–SnF 2 composite anode with Li, LiF, and Li-Sn alloy was specifically designed and prepared. The composite anode improves the wettability to LLZTO, constructing an intimate contact interface between it and LLZTO. Meanwhile, ionic/electronic conductive paths in situ formed at the interface can effectively uniform Li deposition and suppress Li dendrite. The solid-state symmetric cell exhibits low interface resistance (11 Ω·cm 2 ) and high critical current density (1.3 mA·cm −2 ) at 25 °C. The full SSLMB based on LiFePO 4 or LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 cathode also shows stable cycling performance and high rate capability. This work provides a new composite anode strategy for achieving high-energy density and high-safety SSLMBs. Graphical abstract
