A novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor coupled with a Z‑scheme was developed to realize quantitative determination of 3,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77) at a concentration of sub-picogram per liter. The PEC aptasensor was fabricated by immobilizing ZnSe/Ag 2 Se on indium-tin oxide (ITO) that could covalently bind sulfurized aptamer. Meanwhile, complementary DNA-functionalized CdTe units were used as the sensitizers, and these were immobilized on the aptamer to form Z‑scheme dual-photosystem (PS). The Z‑scheme PS based on both ZnSe/Ag 2 Se and CdTe would be provided with better photocatalytic activity than conventional heterojunctions , and improving the photo-to-current conversion efficiency without biased voltage. Following the process of hatching, PCB77 was captured via the aptamer on the PEC aptasensor, producing aptamer–PCB77 complexes with weak conductive performance. Using the photocurrent change as a response signal for the quantitative detection of PCB77, the detection limits of the proposed method were 0.05 pg L –1 and 0.22 ng L –1 for the linear ranges of 0.01–500 pg L –1 and 0.5–10 5 ng L –1 , respectively. Compared with other technologies, the PEC aptasensor is more flexible, sensitive, specific and rapid in the absence of biased voltage under visble light. The results presented herein can potentially help build a model for the detection of various polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) with stable chemical properties and insulation performances that can be used to study persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in marine organisms and in the analysis of environmental conditions.

A direct Z-scheme heterojunction coupling hierarchical nanosheet MoS 2 nanotubes with CuInS 2 quantum dots was successfully prepared to fabricate MoS 2 NTs/CuInS 2 QDs photoanodes for enhanced photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) activity. The MoS 2 NTs with stacked nanosheets and tubular structure have high surface area and abundant basal edges, which can create more active reaction sites. Simultaneously, the continuous and broad photo-absorption range of MoS 2 NTs improved the utilization of visible-light and increased the separation efficiency of photo-induced electron-hole pairs. The integration of MoS 2 NTs with CuInS 2 QDs onto Cu foil yielded direct Z-scheme heterojunction photoanode. The formation of Z-scheme heterojunction inhibited the recombination of photo-induced electron-hole pairs and produced more active electrons and holes to facilitate the generation of highly active species. Under visible light illumination, the prepared MoS 2 NTs/CuInS 2 QDs photoanode showed superior PEC activity by applying a suitable bias voltage. In PEC process, the generated holes, hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals with strong oxidative were employed to achieve highly efficient degradation of tetracycline. The prepared photoanode exhibited high stability, reusability, and broad application potential in PEC degradation of organic pollutants. Moreover, a possible mechanism of the transfer pathway of photo-induced electron-hole pairs on the MoS 2 NTs/CuInS 2 QDs photoanode was proposed based on a direct Z-scheme heterojunction.

Multinary metal sulfides are receiving more and more attention in the field of photocatalysis due to their excellent photoelectronic properties, but they usually suffer from the low photogenerated carrier separation efficiency and poor photostability. In this work, a dual multinary metal sulfides composite system is developed to address these issues. A unique multi-hierarchical Z-scheme heterojunction is successfully constructed by in - situ growth of branched SnIn 4 S 8 nanosheets on nanopetals of flower-like ZnIn 2 S 4 . The prepared optimal composite photocatalyst displays significantly enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity with H 2 evolution rate of 2.988 mmol g −1 h −1 , Cr(VI) reduction rate constant of 0.094 min −1 and dye degradation rate constant of 0.152 min −1 , which are 4.5, 9.4 and 19 times of bare SnIn 4 S 8 , and 2.9, 4.3 and 3.5 times of bare ZnIn 2 S 4 , respectively. The improved photocatalytic performance is primarily attributed to the abundant porous channels of the novel hierarchical flower-shaped architecture and the formation of the direct Z-scheme heterojunction, guaranteeing the richer active sites, better light harvesting, stronger redox capability, and more efficient charge transfer. This work demonstrates the promising applications of the SnIn 4 S 8 /ZnIn 2 S 4 hybrid in energy and environmental photocatalysis fields, and should be instructive for the design and modification of multinary sulfide photocatalysts.

Industrial applications of water splitting to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide reduction to produce high value added products remain significant challenges, owing to the low density of electrons and holes produced by photoexcitation, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and sluggish redox reactions . Direct Z scheme photocatalysts have attracted much attention due to their excellent space–photogenerated electron−hole pairs and stronger redox ability. Herein, the core−shell direct Z scheme construct was established by a structure of NiO/Ni coated CdS spherical, finally achieved photocatalytic pure water splitting, simultaneously produced with stoichiometric ratio 2:1 (include 42.5 μmol g − 1 h − 1 H 2 and 20.1 μmol g − 1 h − 1 O 2 ), AQY (apparent quantum yield) was 1.6% (in pure water system, λ = 420 nm) and STH (Solar to Hydrogen Conversion Efficiency) was 2.1 × 10 −4 %. The yield of CO from photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide was 36.7 μmol g − 1 h − 1 . Insight into the reaction mechanism provides an initial attempt to reveal the direct Z scheme of NiO@CdS and the Schottky junction of NiO/Ni together to promote the photocatalytic performance. This work can provide a strategy scheme for constructing a bifunctional sphere−shell direct Z scheme catalyst and applying it to photocatalytic overall water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction.

In this work, LaOCl/LDH Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst containing oxygen vacancies were successfully constructed and used for photodegradation of norfloxacin (NOR). The results showed that the removal rate of NOR by LaOCl/LDH was up to 90%, and the reaction rate constant was 2 times than LaOCl and LDH. By exploring factors affecting the photodegradation performance, including pH, catalyst dosage, light intensity and reaction time, the kinetics of the degradation process were investigated in detail. It indicates that the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction enhanced the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers and enhanced the redox capacity of photocarriers. DFT calculation shows that the oxygen vacancies on LaOCl promoted the absorption of visible light and effectively adsorbing and activating small molecules. In addition, based on LC-MS results, intermediates and a possible pathway for NOR degradation were proposed. The synergistic effect of Z-scheme heterojunction and oxygen vacancies enhanced the photodegradation property of LaOCl/LDH for NOR, which provides a reference for constructing highly efficient photocatalysts.

Z-scheme heterojunctions can improve the light energy utilization efficiency of TiO 2 -based semiconductors because of their unique photogenerated carrier transfer pathways. In this study, we used in-situ synthesis strategy to construct a novel π conjugated polymer poly (diphenylbutadiene) (PDPB) doped TiO 2 composite system . The as-synthesized 20 wt% PDPB/TiO 2 heterojunction shows a Rhodamine B degradation rate of 455.5 mg/h/g c under visible light, which is 272% higher than that of bare TiO 2 . The structural characterization and test analysis of the photocatalysts reveal the main reasons of the photocatalytic performance enhancement of PDPB/TiO 2 . The Z-scheme PDPB/TiO 2 heterojunctions possesses both the advantages of type II heterojunction and excellent redox ability of PDPB/TiO 2 system. Moreover, the introduction of PDPB enhances the visible light absorption range and the specific surface area of the catalyst. This work provides a fresh approach for the involvement of organic polymers in the construction of TiO 2 -based heterojunction photocatalysts.

Photocatalytic benzyl alcohol (BA) oxidation to value-added chemicals by semiconductors has attracted massive attentions due to its industrial interest. In this work, Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts composed of FAPbBr 3 nanocrystals (NCs) and WO 3 with different morphologies are prepared. Benefiting from the strong redox potential and morphological engineering, the Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits an outstanding performance of BA oxidation to benzaldehyde (BD) with 99% selectively. Remarkably, after manipulating the size of FAPbBr 3 NCs to quantum dots (QDs), benzoic acid (BZ) as the main product (90% selectivity) of BA oxidation can be generated on the Z-scheme photocatalyst. As revealed by in-situ electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR), a new radical will be generated over the FAPbBr 3 QDs/WO 3 which alters the product of benzyl alcohol oxidation form BD to BZ.

The rational utilization of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) and quantum dots (QDs) semiconductors to highlight their merits as efficient photocatalysts remains attractive and challenging. Targeted integration of g-C 3 N 4 and QDs with expanded interfacial contact and multi-channel electron transfer is an effective means to boost the transfer efficiency of photogenerated electrons and achieve prominent photocatalytic activity. In this article, novel attapulgite (ATP)-interpenetrated Bi 2 WO 6 QDs/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites (BWQ/g-C 3 N 4 /ATP, designated as BCAs) are successfully fabricated through a simple and effective in situ hydrothermal growth method. The nanorod-structured ATP acts as numerous bridges to intercalate into the interlayers and expands inner space of g-C 3 N 4 . Theoretical calculation results indicate that an interfacial internal electric field (IEF) is formed where electrons transfer from g-C 3 N 4 to Bi 2 WO 6 . Originating from the intact interfacial contact of the expanded g-C 3 N 4 and highly dispersed BWQ with reinforcing electronic transferability of ATP, the optimal sample of BCA5 with higher specific surface area, more active sites and electron transfer channels, and stronger light harvestability, exhibits a nearly-100% degradation of organic contaminant of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole in water, 35-, 17- and 3-fold rate constant higher than that the pristine g-C 3 N 4 , BWQ and Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 counterparts, respectively. Various characterization techniques are employed to put forward the mechanisms in depth on MBT degradation route and IEF-induced photocatalytic Z-scheme over the BCA5 under photoexcitation.

BACKGROUND Insect pheromone synergists have been widely used to produce potent pheromone products for environment-friendly pest control. Codlemone (Cod) and ( Z )-8-dodecenol (Dod) are two major Grapholita molesta pheromone synergists, with Cod having greater synergism and affinity for G. molesta pheromone binding protein 2 (GmolPBP2). Uncovering structural information key to the different binding affinity of Cod and Dod to GmolPBP2 would gain insights into what causes their synergy activity discrepancy. RESULTS Binding modes of the two synergists in the binding pocket of GmolPBP2 were analyzed and compared by molecular dynamics-based approaches. Although Cod and Dod were stabilized in a similar hydrophobic pocket, their interaction details with GmolPBP2 were divergent due to the extra double bond (C10═C11) in Cod. The C10═C11 improved the hydrophobic interactions of Cod with around residues. Such hydrophobic interaction improvement was also reflected in the raised importance of Phe11 in the GmolPBP2-Cod interaction. Not only that, the increased hydrophobic forces introduced by the C10═C11 changed the CH2–OH orientation in the GmolPBP2-Cod complex, which improved the H-bond interaction. Electrostatic complementarity analysis further indicated the positive role of C10═C11 in optimizing GmolPBP2-Cod interaction. CONCLUSION The C10═C11 is thought to contribute greatly to Cod's stronger synergy as a group key to the higher GmolPBP2-affinity, based on which the improvement directions for Cod and Dod were addressed as well. Our findings will aid in the development and optimization of more effective pheromone synergists, resulting in more effective pheromone-based pest management.

Anticancer treatment is largely affected by the hypoxic tumor microenvironment (TME), which causes the resistance of the tumor to radiotherapy. Combining radiosensitizer compounds and O2self-enriched moieties is an emerging strategy in hypoxic-tumor treatments. Herein, we engineered GdW10@PDA-CAT (K3Na4H2GdW10O36·2H2O, GdW10, polydopamine, PDA, catalase, CAT) composites as a radiosensitizer for the TME-manipulated enhancement of radiotherapy. In the composites, Gd (Z = 64) and W (Z = 74), as the high Z elements, make X-ray gather in tumor cells, thereby enhancing DNA damage induced by radiation. CAT can convert H2O2to O2and H2O to enhance the X-ray effect under hypoxic TME. CAT and PDA modification enhances the biocompatibility of the composites. Our results showed that GdW10@PDA-CAT composites increased the efficiency of radiotherapy in HT29 cells in culture. This polyoxometalates and O2self-supplement composites provide a promising radiosensitizer for the radiotherapy field.Keywords:radiosensitizer;polyoxometalates;catalase;O2self-supplement;radiotherapy

Photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production from water and O2 has received considerable attention. However, most of the photocatalysts reported often require the addition of sacrificial agents to quench h+, which greatly restricts their practical application and increases the cost. In this study, we proposed a Z-scheme heterojunction WO3/covalent organic framework (Tp–TAPB) that can accelerate the separation and charge transfer at the interface and retain the strong oxidative and reductive ability of WO3 and Tp–TAPB. The photocatalytic activity for H2O2 production of WO3/Tp–TAPB reached 1488.4 μmol g−1 h−1 in a pure water system without any sacrificial agents, which is 72.3 times and 2.8 times higher than that of WO3 and Tp–TAPB, respectively. In addition, WO3/Tp–TAPB was used for photocatalytic H2O2 production in lake water and tap water, and a high photocatalytic H2O2 production rate was still maintained. The in situ photocatalytically synthesized H2O2 was used in the real coking wastewater to remove chemical oxygen demand (COD) under UV light radiation. The removal of COD was over 37% with UV/H2O2. To the best of our knowledge, there is no other study on the degradation of organic pollutants in real water by using photocatalytically synthesized H2O2in situ. This study provides a new idea and approach for photocatalytic H2O2 production without using a sacrificial agent.

In this work, the Z-scheme layered double hydroxide (LDH)/reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/indium vanadate (InVO 4 ) heterojunction was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal synthesis. RGO , with excellent electron mobility, endowed rapid charge migration and separation between the CoAl-LDH and InVO 4 . Various characterizations and tests showed that the LDH/RGO/InVO 4 heterojunction exhibited superior optical properties, and its carriers’ transfer pathway conformed to Z-scheme mechanism. Under visible light illumination, CO was observed to be the main product during photocatalytic CO 2 reduction, and the LDH/RGO/InVO 4 -15 exhibited the highest CO yield of 204.86 μmol g −1 within 2 h, approximately 2.62 times of pristine CoAl-LDH (78.2 μmol g −1 ). In addition, LDH/RGO/InVO 4 -15 showed favorable structure stability and performance stability. In situ fourier infrared spectroscopy (ISFT-IR) analysis demonstrated that the predominant intermediates of CO 2 reduction process were carboxylate (COOH*) and bicarbonate (HCO 3 *). Accordingly, possible pathways of CO 2 reduction to CO were deduced. This work can advance the development of efficient Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for CO 2 reduction.
