Fabrication of Pd@ZIF-8 catalysts with different Pd spatial distributions and their catalytic properties

Shuaishuai Ding,Qing Yan,Hong Jiang,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Rizhi Chen,Weihong Xing

By adjusting the addition time of palladium nanoparticles, during the formation of ZIF-8, an efficient and facile method was proposed to control the palladium spatial distribution within ZIF-8 crystals. Characterizations reveal that the addition time can significantly affect the particle size of Pd@ZIF-8 and palladium spatial distribution. As the PVP-stabilized palladium nanoparticles are added at the early stage of the ZIF-8 formation, larger ZIF-8 crystals with completely embedded palladium nanoparticles can be obtained. Introducing the PVP-stabilized palladium nanoparticles later can lead to the formation of smaller ZIF-8 crystals with all the palladium nanoparticles on the outer surfaces of ZIF-8. The catalytic performance of Pd@ZIF-8 strongly depends on the palladium spatial distribution, and the Pd@ZIF-8 with completely embedded palladium nanoparticles can provide excellent product selectivity and better catalytic stability in the hydrogenation of alkenes.

Rapid prediction method of ZIF-8 immobilized Candida rugosa lipase activity by near-infrared spectroscopy

Shiyi Chen,Mengli Ma,Juan Peng,Xiaogang He,Qian Wang,Ganghui Chu

Candida rugosa lipase (CRL, EC3.1.1.3) is one of the main enzymes synthesizing esters, and ZIF-8 was chosen as an immobilization carrier for lipase. Enzyme activity testing often requires expensive reagents as substrates, and the experiment processes are time-consuming and inconvenient. As a result, a novel approach based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRs) was developed for predicting CRL/ZIF-8 enzyme activity. The absorbance of the immobilized enzyme catalytic system was evaluated using UV–Vis spectroscopy to investigate the amount of CRL/ZIF-8 enzyme activity. The powdered samples' near-infrared spectra were obtained. The sample’s enzyme activity data were linked with each sample’s original NIR spectra to establish the NIR model. A partial least squares (PLS) model of immobilized enzyme activity was developed by coupling spectral preprocessing with a variable screening technique. The experiments were completed within 48 h to eliminate inaccuracies between the reduction in enzyme activity with increasing laying-aside time throughout the test and the NIRs modeling. The root-mean-square error of cross-validation (RMSECV), the correlation coefficient of validation set (R) value, and the ratio of prediction to deviation (RPD) value were employed as assessment model indicators. The near-infrared spectrum model was developed by merging the best 2nd derivative spectral preprocessing with the Competitive Adaptive Reweighted Sampling (CARS) variable screening method. This model's root-mean-square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) was 0.368 U/g, the correlation coefficient of calibration set (R_cv) value was 0.943, the root-mean-square error of prediction (RMSEP) set was 0.414 U/g, the correlation coefficient of validation set (R) value was 0.952, and the ratio of prediction to deviation (RPD) was 3.0. The model demonstrates that the fitting relationship between the predicted and the reference enzyme activity value of the NIRs is satisfactory. The findings revealed a strong relationship between NIRs and CRL/ZIF-8 enzyme activity. As a result, the established model could be implemented to quantify the enzyme activity of CRL/ZIF-8 quickly by including more variations of natural samples. The prediction method is simple, rapid, and adaptable to be the theoretical and practical basis for further studying other interdisciplinary research work in enzymology and spectroscopy.

Biotin decorated celastrol-loaded ZIF-8 nano-drug delivery system targeted epithelial ovarian cancer therapy

Ruisi Zhou,Yanting You,Zhiqiang Zha,Jie Chen,Yanchun Li,Xiaohu Chen,Xiaomei Chen,Xuefeng Jiang,Jinxiang Chen,Hiu Yee Kwan,Xiaoshan Zhao,Liping Huang,Yanyan Liu

Ovarian cancer (OC) stands as the second most prominent factor leading to cancer-related fatalities, characterized by a notably low five-year survival rate. The insidious onset of OC combined with its resistance to chemotherapy poses significant challenges in terms of treatment, emphasizing the utmost importance of developing innovative therapeutic agents. Despite its remarkable anti-tumor efficacy, celastrol (CEL) faces challenges regarding its clinical utilization in OC due to its restricted water solubility and notable side effects. In this study, celastrol (CEL) was encapsulated into Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8(ZIF-8) nanoparticle and grafted with biotin-conjugated polyethylene glycol (CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO). Comprehensive comparisons of the physicochemical properties and anticancer activities of CEL and CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO were conducted. Our findings revealed that CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO exhibited favorable characteristics, including hydrodynamic diameters of 234.5 nm, excellent water solubility, high drug loading (31.60% ± 2.85), encapsulation efficiency (60.52% ± 2.79), and minimal side effects. Furthermore, CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO can release chemicals in response to an acidic micro-environment, which is more likely a tumor micro-environment. In vitro, studies showed that CEL@ZIF-8@BIO inhibited cell proliferation, led to mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) decline, and generated reactive oxygen species in OC cells. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments indicated that CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO enhanced anti-tumor activity against OC via up-regulated apoptosis-promoting biomarkers and rendered cancer cell apoptosis via the P38/JNK MAPK signaling pathway. In conclusion, we have successfully developed a novel drug delivery system (CEL@ZIF-8@PEG-BIO), resulting in significant improvements in both water solubility and anti-tumor efficacy thereby providing valuable insights for future clinical drug development.

Enhancing stability via confining Rh–P species in ZIF-8 for hydroformylation of 1-octene

Xiaorui Yan,Lele Chen,Haisheng Wei,Tiantian Liu,Kairui Li,Jing Li

The stability of Rh-based heterogeneous catalysts is a key issue in the hydroformylation of olefins. Confinement of active Rh species has been considered an effective strategy to achieve stable catalysts. In this work, a phosphine ligand was successfully confined in ZIF-8 material and coordinated with Rh metal by a reduction procedure to develop an efficient and stable Rh-based catalyst for hydroformylation of 1-octene. The results indicate that the catalyst reduced at 300 °C under H2 atmosphere exhibits better stability than that with NaBH4 as reductant and undoped P catalyst. Various characterization studies demonstrate that the superior performance is due to the strong interaction between Rh metal and P, which inhibits the leaching of active Rh species. This work reveals an effective strategy for the synthesis of highly stable catalysts for use in the hydroformylation reaction.

Nitrogen-sulfur co-doped ZIF-8-derived carbon materials for supercapacitors with low self-discharge

Haonan Zhang,Lin Fang,Yuanchao Guo,Zhongzhu Wang,Haibo Hu,Wen He,Peihong Wang

Supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted extensive attention due to the properties of high power density, long cycle life, and high rate performance. However, the high self-discharge is one giant challenge for long-term energy storage applications of SC. Herein, we prepared a high-performance SC with low self-discharge based on nitrogen-sulfur co-doped ZIF-8-derived (NS-PC) materials. The synergistic effects of high-temperature carbonization and nitrogen-sulfur (N-S) doping are systematically investigated. With a carbonization temperature of 900 °C, assisted with N-S doping, the maximum specific capacitance of the NS-PC-900//NS-PC-900 symmetrical SC is 42.7 F g −1 , while the power densities range from 650 to 13,000 W kg −1 at the energy densities of 10.04–7.5 Wh kg −1 . The specific capacitance remains 95.7 % even after 20,000 charge-discharge cycles. More importantly, the as-prepared NS-PC-900//NS-PC-900 SC exhibits an ultra-low self-discharge rate of solely 0.025 V h −1 within 24 h. This work provides a universal strategy to fabricate high-performance SCs with low self-discharge.

Modification of ZIF-8 on bacterial cellulose for an efficient selective capture of U(VI)

Zhou Qian,Chen JunJie,Jin Bo,Chu Shijin,Peng Rufang

MOFs are confined to solid supports to overcome their inherent disadvantages of lightweight and submicron size, which pose challenges to the adsorption operation. ZIF-8 nanoparticles can be loaded onto bacterial cellulose (BC) in a simple manner, and subsequently carbonized at 700 °C to obtain a larger specific surface area (expressed as BC@ZIF-8 carbon aerogels (BZCA). SEM indicates that ZIF-8 was successfully self-assembled on bacterial cellulose. Various characterization techniques (SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XRD, BET, and XPS) indicated that BZCA had been successfully prepared, with a large specific surface area (220.45 m 2 /g) and sufficient functional groups (-NH-, -OH, Zn–O, N–O, and C = N-). The relationship of the adsorption of BZCA to UO 2 2+ with both contact time and initial concentration was then studied. Results showed that the adsorption of UO 2 2+ followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R 2  = 0.999). After calculation, the maximum adsorption capacity of BZCA was 535 mg/g, which was comparable to or better than that of other adsorbents. The kinetic analysis disclosed that 70 min was enough for BZCA to reach the adsorption equilibrium. The adsorption mechanism of the prepared adsorbent on UO 2 2+ was studied by FTIR and XPS.

AgNPs@ZIF-8 Hybrid Material-Modified Polyethersulfone Microfiltration Membranes for Antibiofouling Property and Permeability Improvement

Yue Feng,Ning Guo,Shaojie Ren,Xuan Xie,Juan Xu,Yunkun Wang

Membrane fouling is a major hindrance to the effective application of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes. Synthetic silver nanoparticles @ zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (AgNPs@ZIF-8) hybrid crystals were used to modify the PES microfiltration membranes for mitigating membrane fouling and better water permeability. The surface modification of AgNPs@ZIF-8 hybrid crystals improved the antifouling property of the membranes. The number of live bacteria in the bacteria suspension was over 90 % less than that of control membranes. Furthermore, after surface modification, the membrane permeability was enhanced, which was due to increased surface hydrophilization of the membranes which could partly explain the improved antifouling property. The results demonstrate that the use of AgNPs@ZIF-8 hybrid crystals is a feasible and attractive approach for the development of antifouling membranes.

High adsorption for ofloxacin and reusability by the use of ZIF-8 for wastewater treatment

Ruobing Yu,Zhicong Wu

In this study, by the application of the strong interaction between a metal-organic framework material and ofloxacin, ZIF-8 was proposed as an absorbent to remove ofloxacin from wastewater. The results demonstrated that ZIF-8 could remove 96.3 ± 1.1% of ofloxacin from the ofloxacin solution of 100 mg/L, and the maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity reached 194.1 ± 0.4 mg/g, which is superior to that of an adsorbent based on physical adsorption. The high specific surface area and strong interaction between ofloxacin and ZIF-8, including strong hydrogen bonding , complexation of unsaturated metals, and electrostatic interactions , contributed to the adsorption process . Moreover, the adsorption efficiency reached 80.2% after four adsorption cycles. The pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir adsorption model can describe the adsorption of ofloxacin by ZIF-8. Therefore, ZIF-8 is a promising material for the treatment of wastewater containing ofloxacin.

Revealing the Formation of Well-Dispersed Polystyrene@ZIF-8 Core–Shell Nanoparticles by Analytical Ultracentrifugation

Mengdi Chen,Shaoyan Wang,Bingwen Hu

Significant progress has been made in the synthesis and application of core–shell nanoparticles in the past decade. But particle agglomerations are hard to avoid as the formation mechanisms of core–shell nanoparticles are still vague and not clear even for the simplest and most straightforward hard-templating method. Here, analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC) is applied to investigate the formation of polystyrene@ZIF-8 core–shell nanoparticles, as a model to understand the hard-templating method. It has been found that the concentration of the ZIF-8 precursor influences both the ZIF-8 shell formation and the agglomeration of the polystyrene (PS) template. An overdiluted ZIF-8 precursor is not suitable for ZIF-8 shell formation, while a highly concentrated ZIF-8 precursor causes strong aggregation of the PS core. By applying the optimal precursor concentration identified by AUC, well-dispersed polystyrene@ZIF-8 core–shell nanoparticles can be obtained.

Deep-Permeation Nanocomposite Structure of ZIF-8 inside Porous Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) by Flow Synergistic Synthesis

Yangmei Qin,Zeyi Xiao,Shizhao Jian,Yuyang Wang,Senqing Fan,Yinan Wang,Boya Qiu,Jingyun Liu,Zexue Wang,Qidong Wan

It is challenging to fabricate stable, complete, controllable, homogeneous metal–organic framework composites. Hereof, we suggested a versatile method where nanocrystals were assembled inside the porous polymer by synergistic chemical synthesis and permeation flow in and through its pores. The poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE)/ZnO and PTFE/ZIF-8 were fabricated as the prototype of the composites. For fabricating the composite, ZnO was first synthesized inside the pores followed by ligand vapor treatment. The even and well-distributed ZnO nanorods of 10–30 nm were synthesized inside pores of PTFE and converted into ZIF-8. The ZnO and ZIF-8 were quantified in 281 and 431 mg g–1 against the original PTFE, respectively. The composite is stable and the nanocrystals are not readily washed away. The adsorption uptake (C3 > C2 > C1) of the light hydrocarbon gases for the PTFE/ZIF-8 nanocomposite were preliminarily evaluated. The adsorption selectivities were calculated, where the selectivities for C2H6/CH4 and C3H8/CH4 were 10.9 and 42.8, respectively.

Electron Transport Improvement of Perovskite Solar Cells via a ZIF-8-Derived Porous Carbon Skeleton

Zhixin Zhang,Xinshu Luo,Bin Wang,Jingbo Zhang

To improve electron transport rate of perovskite solar cells, a ZIF-8-derived porous carbon skeleton layer is prepared by carbonizing the ZIF-8 thin film on conducting glass as the electron transport skeleton of a perovskite solar cell. Polyvinylpyrrolidone is added during the synthesis of ZIF-8 to reduce the particle size of ZIF-8 and decrease the carbonization temperature below 600 °C. The porous structure of ZIF-8 is mainly reserved at the optimized carbonization temperature. Then, TiO2 nanoparticles are deposited on the surface of a porous carbon skeleton to form an electron transport layer of a perovskite solar cell with the structure of FTO/ZIF-8-derived porous carbon layer/TiO2/perovskite/spiro-OMeTAD/Au. Because of the good conductivity of the ZIF-8-derived porous carbon skeleton, the photogenerated electron transport rate of the perovskite solar cell is increased. At the same time, the porous structure of the ZIF-8-derived carbon layer increases the contact area between the perovskite layer and the TiO2 layer to favor separation of photogenerated charges. Therefore, the light-to-electric conversion efficiency of the CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cell is enhanced from 14.25% to 17.32%.

Facile Synthesis and Optical Properties of CsPbX3/ZIF-8 Composites for Wide-Color-Gamut Display

Shiliang Mei,Bobo Yang,Xian Wei,Hanqing Dai,Zhihao Chen,Zhongjie Cui,Guilin Zhang,Fengxian Xie,Wanlu Zhang,Ruiqian Guo

All-inorganic CsPbX3(X = Cl, Br, and I) perovskite quantum dots (QDs), an emerging type of luminescent materials, have drawn extensive attention in recent years. However, the amelioration of their stability is becoming a critical issue. Herein, we present a facile and efficient approach to prepare novel perovskite QDs/metal–organic frameworks (CsPbX3/ZIF-8) composites under ambient-atmospheric conditions. The obtained composites exhibit better properties including high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs) (41.2% for green and 34.8% for red), narrow-band emission (20 nm for green and 31 nm for red), and enhanced stability in comparison to bare QDs. Furthermore, their application in a remote-type white-light-emitting device was explored and a wide color gamut (~137% of the National Television System Committee standard) was achieved, verifying that these novel luminescent composites have great prospect in backlight display application. Keywords:perovskite quantum dots;all-inorganic;ZIF-8;composite;wide-color-gamut display
