In the present study, a novel ratiometric fluorescence probe based on dual-emitting Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (Mn:ZnS QDs) was established for detection of Pb 2+ and methyl parathion (MP). The dual-emitting Mn:ZnS QDs was aqueous synthesised in one pot and played as a ratiometric fluorescence probe for the detection of Pb 2+ with high sensitivity. The fluorescence intensity ratio (F 450nm /F 585nm ) of the probe against the concentration of Pb 2+ showed a good linear relationship from 10 nM to 60 nM with a detection limit of 0.5 nM. Furthermore, the Mn:ZnS QDs/Pb 2+ system was established as a turn-on fluorescence sensing system to quantitative measure the MP concentration. The fluorescence intensity at 450 nm exhibited a good linear relationship in the MP concentration range from 0.19 to 0.95 μM with a detection limit of about 0.02 μM. It also had a satisfying performance in fruit and environmental water samples. Therefore, the prepared Mn:ZnS QDs-based sensor has been established as a ratiometric fluorescence probe and turn-on method for quantitative detection of lead ion and MP, respectively.

A new type of Au nanoparticles (NPs) decorated hollow flower-like ZnO@ZnS (HZOS) heterostructure (HS) is elaborately designed as efficient photocatalyst for water splitting application. The optimal Au decorated HZOS exhibits a high hydrogen generation rate of 569.81 μmol/h (10 mg of catalyst), which is 345, 374 and 11 times higher than that of pristine ZnO (1.65 μmol/h), ZnS (1.52 μmol/h) and ZnO@ZnS (51.7 μmol/h), respectively. Furthermore, its apparent quantum efficiency reaches to 25.47% at the wavelength of 365 nm. The significantly enhanced H 2 evolution can be attributed to the synergistic effects from the hollow channel structure and the deposited Au NPs. The hollow channel creates a new migration pathway where charge carriers can transfer towards the hollow channel in addition to the outer surface of the photocatalyst, thus significantly reducing the migration distance of charge carriers, suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, and reducing their transfer resistance. The decoration of Au NPs at the interface between ZnO and ZnS not only facilitates the directional migration of charge carriers because of the formation of Schottky barrier, but also works as electron shuttles to form a Z-scheme transfer process, effectively promoting the separation and migration of charge carriers.

Dysregulation of human tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) production has been implicated in a variety of human diseases. Serum level of TNF-α is frequently detected in clinical diagnosis of cancer patients. Herein, we present an ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sandwich immunosensor for TNF-α detection by utilizing anti-TNF-α nanobody (Nb) orientedly immobilized to the CdS and Mn cosensitized TiO 2 nanorod arrays electrode. Using highly oriented Nb as receptor molecules and a secondary anti-TNF-α nanobody conjugated with ZnS nanoparticles as the signal amplification element, the PEC immunosensor for TNF-α was developed by monitoring the changes in the photocurrent intensity of the electrode resulting from immunoreaction. The proposed method has the linear range from 2.0 pg/mL to 200 ng/mL and the detection limit was 1.0 pg/mL. The method also reveals high specificity to detect TNF-α, with acceptable intra-assay precision and excellent stability. The results for the detection of ten serum samples from lung cancer patients and normal human have good agreement with the clinical data.

An environmental friendly fluorescence resonance energy transfer probe for determination of glucose has been developed. The natural pigment, 3-hydroxyflavone, can enter the hydrophobic cavity of beta-cyclodextrin functionalized ZnS quantum dots , forming a fluorescence resonance energy transfer system with beta-cyclodextrin modified ZnS quantum dots as energy donor and 3-hydroxyflavone as energy acceptors. Glucose can be oxidized with assistance of the glucose oxidase to quantitatively produce hydrogen peroxide, which could rapidly quench the fluorescence intensity of the 3-hydroxyflavone in the probe by catalysis of horseradish peroxidase. The probe was successfully applied to determination of glucose in human serum and urine samples, and the results indicated that the average spiking recoveries of glucose ranged from 102 to 113%, with relative standard deviations below 15%. The developed approach were simple and possessed high sensitivity and selective for glucose, and this work provides a new clue for developing fluorescent probe .

In this study, molecularly imprinted polymers with Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (ZnS:Mn QDs) were prepared using dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as the template molecule, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as the functional monomer and the tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as the cross-linker. ZnS:Mn QDs offer a readout signal to monitor the amount of DBP bound to the imprinted matrix and to evaluate the efficiency of imprinting. The products MIPs-ZnS:Mn QDs were characterized by transmission electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and fluorescence spectroscopy. In addition, optical stability and the effect of pH on fluorescence intensity were evaluated. The obtained polymers can sensitively and selectively recognize template molecules in real samples via fluorescence intensity. The fluorescence intensity decreases linearly with increasing concentration in the range of 5.0–50 μmol L−1. It reaches a detection limit of 0.27 μmol L−1. The average recovery rate of DBP at three spiking levels is more than 98.1%.

A bright white light emitting benzoperylene probe-polyethyleneimine capped quantum dot nanocomposite has been synthesized for the first time. The negatively charged benzoperylene probe with a carboxylic acid functional group tends to self-assemble in the presence of a polycation, and exhibits distinct induced excimer fluorescence. Phosphorescence emitting manganese doped zinc sulfide quantum dots (Mn-ZnS QDs) were capped with polyethyleneimine (PEI). The PEI capped Mn-ZnS QDs were used to induce the benzoperylene probe self-assembly. A bright white light emitting nanocomposite was obtained both in solution and in solid state. The white emission has Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.32), a color-rendering index (CRI) of 72.61 and correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5697 K. Multiple color emissions from blue to orange could also be obtained in a controllable manner via simple adjustment of the ratio of the PEI capped Mn-ZnS QDs and the benzoperylene probe. The nanocomposite displays good photo, chemical and long-term stability. A strong white light emitting LED device based on the nanocomposite was demonstrated.

Ni doped ZnS nanopowders were synthesized by hydrothermal method. The as-synthesized ZnS nanopowders possessed zinc blende structure with the particle sizes of ∼20 nm, and they display a broad emission band from 400 nm to 700 nm centered at ∼540 nm. The influence of Ni 2+ doping and vacuum annealing on the structure, morphology and optical properties was investigated systematically. The results revealed that the emission peaks are blue shifted with Ni 2+ doping, and the emission peaks of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 mol% Ni 2+ doped ZnS nanopowders are centered at ∼520, ∼ 510, 500, 490 and 470 nm, respectively. While, the zinc blende phase transformed to wurtzite phase when annealing at 600 °C or higher, and the annealed samples exhibited three emission peaks positioned at ∼490, ∼547 and ∼580 nm. The results indicated that the as prepared Ni 2+ -doped ZnS nanopowders have a potential application in LED as light conversion layer.

Background DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1), a dominant enzyme responsible for the transfer of a methyl group from the universal methyl donor to the 5-position of cytosine residues in DNA, is essential for mammalian development and closely related to cancer and a variety of age-related chronic diseases. DNMT1 has become a useful biomarker in early disease diagnosis and a potential therapeutic target in cancer therapy and drug development. However, till now, most of the studies on DNA methyltransferase (MTase) detection have focused on the prokaryote MTase and its activity. Methods A magnetic fluorescence-linked immunosorbent assay (FLISA) using CdSe/ZnS quantum dots as fluorescent probes was proposed for the rapid and sensitive detection of the DNMT1 level in this study. Key factors that affect the precision and accuracy of the determination of DNMT1 were optimized. Results Under the optimal conditions, the limit of detection was 0.1 ng/mL, the linear range was 0.1–1,500 ng/mL, the recovery was 91.67%–106.50%, and the relative standard deviations of intra- and inter-assays were respectively 5.45%–11.29% and 7.03%–11.25%. The cross-reactivity rates with DNA methyltransferases 3a and 3b were only 4.0% and 9.4%, respectively. Furthermore, FLISA was successfully used to detect the levels of DNMT1 in human serum samples, and compared with commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. The results revealed that there was a good correlation between FLISA and commercial ELISA kits (correlation coefficient r =0.866, p =0.001). The linear scope of FLISA was broader than ELISA, and the measurement time was much shorter than ELISA kits. Conclusion These indicated that the proposed FLISA method was sensitive and high throughput and can quickly screen the level of DNMT1 in serum samples.

Introducing structured color-generating microstructures on leather instead of dyestuffs is expected to be an effective solution to achieve high-performance colorful leather without harmful effluent. Here, based on the disordered thin-layer Cu2O or ZnS microstructure, we obtained a series of colorful leathers with both sparkling brilliant structural colors and excellent color durability, using polyurethane and polyacrylate as linkers. The brilliant colors were generated by Mie resonance of ZnS or Cu2O nanospheres, while the polymer binders provided color stability and unique high gloss. The brilliant color has a unique sparkling effect under light, and the structural color can be adjusted by the sizes of the Cu2O or ZnS spheres. The colorful leather has superior rubbing fastness (4–5 grades) and superior light fastness (5–6 grades) to maintain color stability. Additionally, multiple color patterns and large-area colorful leather can also be produced, displaying great potential in the sustainable development of the leather industry.

Florfenicol (F), an antimicrobial agent exclusive to veterinary use within the chloramphenicol class, is extensively applied as a broad-spectrum remedy for animal diseases. Despite its efficacy, concerns arise over potential deleterious residues in animal-derived edibles, posing threats to human health. This study pioneers an innovative approach, introducing a quantum dot fluorescence-based immunoassay (FLISA) for the meticulous detection of F residues in animal-derived foods and feeds. This method demonstrates heightened sensitivity, with a detection limit of 0.3 ng/mL and a quantitative detection range of 0.6–30.4 ng/mL. Method validation, applied to diverse food sources, yields recoveries from 90.4 % to 109.7 %, featuring RSDs within 1.3 % to 8.7 %, the results showed high consistency with the national standard HPLC-MS/MS detection method. These findings underscore the method's accuracy and precision, positioning it as a promising tool for swift and reliable F residue detection, with substantial implications for fortifying food safety monitoring.

Methods based on photoelectrochemical immunoassay have been utilized for the quantitative monitoring of neuron-specific antigen (NSE) with neuroblastoma patients, but most provide only low sensitivity. In this contribution, a simple and feasible photoelectrochemical immunoassay based on ZIF-8-derived double-shelled hollow ZnS nanocages (ZnS NCs) was applied to the split-type photocurrent measurement of NSE in biological fluids, accompanied by an enzyme-catalyzed system for synergistic amplification. Glucose oxidase (GOx)-labeled anti-NSE secondary antibody was utilized to form a sandwiched immunoreaction on capture antibody-coated microplate, whereas ZnS NCs with strong and stable photocurrents were employed to generate the detectable photocurrent. Subsequently, GOx catalyzed the glucose substrate to produce hydrogen peroxide, thereby causing the change in the photocurrent of double-shelled hollow ZnS nanocages. Followed by optimizing experimental conditions, the photoelectrochemical immunoassay displayed good photocurrent responses within the dynamic range 1.0–10000 pg mL −1 at a low detection limit of 0.59 pg mL −1 NSE. Good reproducibility and high specificity were acquired for determination of NSE standards. Such a highly favourable analytical performance could be achieved even in human serum samples at different dilutions.

High-energy exciton emission could allow single-component multi-colour display or white light-emitting diodes. However, the thermal relaxation of high-energy excitons is much faster than the photon emission of them, making them non-emissive. Here, we report quantum dots with light hole-heavy hole splitting exhibiting strong high-energy exciton electroluminescence from high-lying light holes, opening a gate for high-performance multi-colour light sources. The high-energy electroluminescence can reach 44.5% of the band-edge heavy-hole exciton emission at an electron flux density Φ e of 0.71 × 10 19 s −1 cm −2 − 600 times lower than the photon flux density Φ p (4.3 × 10 21 s −1 cm −2 ) required for the similar ratio. Our simulation and experimental results suggest that the oscillator strength of heavy holes reduces more than that of light holes under electric fields. We attribute this as the main reason for strong light-hole electroluminescence. We observe this phenomenon in both Cd x Zn 1-x Se-ZnS and CdSe-CdS core-shell quantum dots exhibiting large light hole-heavy hole splittings.
