A large-sized 3D microflow support was prepared by chemical liquid deposition of an epoxy-based porous polymer within a 3D melamine sponge. This novel support demonstrated advantages over traditional microfluidic reactors in terms of easier scalability, simplified enzyme loading, and superior multiphase dispersion. The resultant composite sponge was utilized as a microflow support for the immobilization of phospholipase D (PLD) through an adsorption and cross-linking method. Under optimal immobilization conditions, the loading capacity and specific activity of the immobilized PLD were 50.2 mg/g support and 14.5 U/mg protein, respectively. The PLD-immobilized microflow supports were positioned in a columnar reactor, where a biphasic transesterification reaction was conducted in a continuous circulation mode powered by two pumps. The PLD-catalyzed reaction yielded phosphatidylserine (PS) with high yields and reaction ratios. Under optimized conditions, the PS yield reached as high as 93.1% within 4 h at 45 °C, by using free PLD the PS yield reached only 61.5% within 12 h. After 10 cycles, the immobilized PLD retained 76% of its original activity.

Using N -methyl-D-glucosamine (NMDG) as the functional monomer , glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as the connecting monomer, functionalized Fe 3 O 4 nano-particles (NPs) as the support, three adsorbents were prepared including direct polymer GMA-NMDG, magnetic GMA-NMDG polymer (MGN), and boron magnetic ion-imprinted polymer (BMIIP). Based upon the optimization of synthesis conditions, the prepared adsorbents and intermediate products were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller to investigate the synthesis process, the morphological structure and the functional properties of the materials. The optimum performances of GMA-NMDG, MGN and BMIIP were obtained in the initial neutral solution (pH of 6.5). Moreover, GMA-NMDG and MGN reached the maximum adsorption capacity at 120 min, whereas BMIIP reached adsorption saturation at 60 min. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more suitable for the adsorption of boron using the adsorbents. The maximum adsorption capacity of GMA-NMDG was found to be 43.4 mg·g −1 , while those of MGN and BMIIP were 32.5 and 28.3 mg·g −1 , respectively. The Langmuir isotherm model was more appropriate to describe the adsorption process . The adsorbents maintained satisfactory adsorption performance within a certain temperature range. Competing ions had little effect on the adsorption of boron, and would be adsorbed simultaneously, due to which, the effect of co-adsorption can be considered. The adsorption capacity of GMA-NMDG was high, while the adsorption selectivity of BMIIP was much better. Furthermore, BMIIP showed good adsorption after five cycles of adsorption and desorption. The comparison of adsorbents showed that GMA-NMDG had the highest adsorption capacity and was suitable for co-adsorption. MGN had a high adsorption capacity, good comprehensive performance and magnetic properties. BMIIP had better adsorption rate, adsorption selectivity and recyclability. Through the optimization of synthesis conditions, the adsorption capacity of the traditional monomer NMDG polymer was increased, and the magnetism was given to facilitate rapid recovery. Combined with the ion imprinting technology, it showed higher boron adsorption selectivity in the presence of competitive ions.

A large amount of spent LiFePO 4 (LFP) has been produced in recent years because it is one of the most widely used cathode materials for electric vehicles. The traditional hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical recycling methods are doubted because of the economic and environmental benefits; the direct regeneration method is considered a promising way to recycle spent LFP. However, the performance of regenerated LFP by direct recycling is not ideal due to the migration of Fe ions during cycling and irreversible phase transition caused by sluggish Li + diffusion. The key to addressing the challenge is to immobilize Fe atoms in the lattice and improve the Li + migration capability during cycling. In this work, spent LFP is regenerated by using environmentally friendly ethanol, and its cycling stability is promoted by elevating the d-band center of Fe atoms via construction of a heterogeneous interface between LFP and nitrogen-doped carbon. The Fe O bonding is strengthened and the migration of Fe ions during cycling is suppressed due to the elevated d-band center. The Li + diffusion kinetics in the regenerated LFP are improved, leading to an excellent reversibility of the phase transition. Therefore, the regenerated LFP exhibits an ultrastable cycling performance at a high rate of 10 C with ≈80% capacity retention after 1000 cycles.

To economically realize proton electrolyte membrane water splitting technology, stable and high-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst is significantly demanded. In this work, we invite tungsten atoms to metallic iridium (Ir) to weaken s-d hybridization of Ir-Ir bond due to the higher electronegativity accepting electron from Ir atoms; as a result, the adsorbed O* species become electrophilic favorable for the nucleophilic attack by H 2 O leading to 22 % decrement in energy barrier for the formation of OOH* species. Therefore, iridium-tungsten (IrW) electrocatalyst exhibits 3.7-fold higher turnover frequency (TOF) than metallic Ir at overpotential of 370 mV in acidic OER catalysis. Moreover, stable OER performance is recorded due to the high cohesive energy of tungsten atoms. Additionally, TOF of IrW electrocatalyst reaches 10.1 s −1 at overpotential of 100 mV in acidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) test, 7.6-time higher than Pt/C and metallic Ir. IrW electrocatalyst only needs 1.52 V to attain 10 mA cm −2 in acidic overall water splitting.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) are major polyphenolic constituents of coffee and green tea with beneficial health properties. In this study, we evaluated the gut protecting effect of CGA and EGCG, alone or in combination, on D-galactose-induced aging mice. CGA plus EGCG more effectively improved the cognition deficits and protected the gut barrier function, compared with the agents alone. Specifically, CGA plus EGCG prevented the D-galactose mediated reactive oxygen species accumulation by increasing the total antioxidant capacity, reducing the levels of malondialdehyde, and suppressing the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and catalase. In addition, supplementation of CGA and EGCG suppressed gut inflammation by reducing the levels of the proinflammatory cytokines TNFα, IFNγ, IL-1β and IL-6. Moreover, CGA and EGCG modulated the gut microbiome altered by D-galactose. For instance, CGA plus EGCG restored the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio of the aging mice to control levels. Furthermore, CGA plus EGCG decreased the abundance of Lactobacillaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Deferribacteraceae, while increased the abundance of Lachnospiraceae, Muribaculaceae, and Rikenellaceae, at the family level. In conclusion, CGA in combination with EGCG ameliorated the gut alterations induced by aging, in part, through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, along with its gut microbiota modulatory capacity.

D-2-hydroxyglutaric acid (D2HG) is overproduced as a result of the D-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria and relevant cancers, caused by gene mutation. Accurate analysis of D2HG could help rapid diagnosis of these diseases and allow for timely treatment. In this work, a D-2-hydroxyglutarate dehydrogenase fromRalstonia solanacearum(RsD2HGDH) is cloned and recombinantly expressed. This enzyme features the direct electron transfer to chemical electron mediators (such as methylene blue (MB)) in the absence of additional coenzymes. Therefore, NAD+, a natural electron acceptor for the commercial D2HGDH and usually known for being unstable and difficult for immobilization can be avoided in the preparation of biosensors. TheRsD2HGDH and MB are co-immobilized on a two-dimensional material, Ti3C2MXene, followed by drop-coating on the gold screen-printed electrode (AuSPE) to construct a compact and portable biosensor. The D2HG in samples can be catalyzed byRsD2HGDH, where the current change is measured by chronoamperometry at −0.23 V. The biosensor shows a D2HG detection range of 0.5 to 120 µM (R2= 0.9974) with a sensitivity of 22.26 μA mM−1cm−2and a detection limit of 0.1 µM (S/N = 3). The biosensor retains 72.52% performance of its incipient state after 30 days of storage. The samples of D2HG-containing fetal bovine serum and artificial urine were analyzed with the recovery of 99.56% to 106.83% and 97.30% to 102.47% further indicating the great application potential of our portable D2HG biosensor.Keywords:D-2-hydroxyglutaric acid;MXene;biosensor;screen-printed electrode;D-2-hydroxyglutarate dehydrogenase

The heavy d-π effect is an important theoretical model for strong Pt–C interaction, and its enhancement is critical to the high-performance design of Pt/C electrocatalysts. Common chemical N-doping to the carbon support can provide possibilities for enhanced electrocatalysis but most often leads to random interaction with Pt nanoparticles (Pt-NPs) and uncontrollable tuning of the heavy d-π effect. Directional confinement of Pt-NPs within N-doped carbon to directly enhance the heavy d-π effect is therefore mostly preferred but rarely reported. Herein, confined ultrafine Pt-NPs in N-doped porous carbon fibers (Pt@NDPCF) were obtained by a combination method involving electrospinning, carbonization, and directional replacement. Such a synthetic strategy leads to highly dispersed, ultrafine Pt-NPs in hierarchically porous carbon fibers and a strong directional interaction of Pt with pyridinic N, which significantly enhances the heavy d-π effect, greatly facilitating electron transfer and optimizing Pt 5d orbitals. Based on these advances, Pt@NDPCF exhibited outstanding activity and superior durability in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with 24 mV lower overpotential at 10 mA cm–2 and a much smaller activity loss after 10,000 cycles of durability tests in comparison with a commercial Pt/C catalyst. This work sheds new lights on the design of high-performance Pt-based nanomaterials toward HER or other practical applications.

d -allulose is a rare low-calorie sugar that has many fundamental biological functions. d -allulose 3-epimerase from Agrobacterium tumefaciens (AT-DAEase) catalyzes the conversion of d -fructose to d -allulose. The enzyme has attracted considerable attention because of its mild catalytic properties. However, the bioconversion efficiency and reusability of AT-DAEase limit its industrial application. Magnetic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have uniform pore sizes and large surface areas and can facilitate mass transport and enhance the capacity for enzyme immobilization. Here, we successfully encapsulated cobalt-type AT-DAEase into the cobalt-based magnetic MOF ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 using a self-assembly strategy. We confirmed the immobilization of enzyme AT-DAEase and characterized the enzymatic properties of the MOF-immobilized AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 . The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles had higher catalytic activity (65.1 U mg −1 ) and bioconversion ratio (38.1%) than the free AT-DAEase. The optimal conditions for maximum enzyme activity of the AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were 55 °C and pH 8.0, which were significantly higher than those of the free AT-DAEase (50 °C and pH 7.5). The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles displayed significantly improved thermal stability and excellent recycling performance, with 80% retention of enzyme activity at a temperature range of 45–70 °C and > 45% of its initial activity after eight cycles of enzyme use. The AT-DAEase@ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles have great potential for large-scale industrial preparation of d -allulose by immobilizing cobalt-type AT-DAEase into magnetic MOF ZIF-67@Fe 3 O 4 .

In this study, a durable superhydrophobic antibacterial coating was developed by a facile spraying method. A mixture of bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) and hydrophobic SiO2nanoparticles was sprayed on carbon steel to provide a superhydrophobic substrate. D-cysteine (D-cys) functionalized SiO2/dopamine/silver nanoparticles with multilayer core-shell structure were then sprayed on superhydrophobic substrate to enhance antibacterial performance. The results of morphology observation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated the successful preparation of antibacterial nanoparticles and presented the hierarchical micro/nanostructures of coating surface. The as-prepared coating exhibited superhydrophobicity, with the water contact angle of ~153°. The coating was endowed with good mechanical durability, which maintained the water contact angle of ~150° after 180 cycles in tape-peel tests. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed satisfactory corrosion resistance of this coating during 3 days of immersion in 3.5% NaCl solution. Furthermore, the coating showed excellent antibacterial performances againstEscherichia coliandPseudomonas aeruginosa, which benefited from the synergistic actions of low wettability of superhydrophobic surface, bactericidal behavior of Ag nanoparticles, and biofilm inhibition effect of D-cys.Keywords:superhydrophobic coatings;antibacterial;D-cysteine;silver nanoparticles

Wheat embryo globulin nutrient (WEGN), with wheat embryo globulin (WEG) as the main functional component, is a nutritional combination that specifically targets memory impairment. In this study, we explored the protective role of WEGN on Alzheimer's disease (AD)-triggered cognitive impairment, neuronal injury, oxidative stress, and acetylcholine system disorder. Specifically, we established an AD model via administration of d -galactose ( d -gal) and Aluminum chloride (AlCl 3 ) for 70 days, then on the 36th day, administered animals in the donepezil and WEGN (300, 600, and 900 mg/kg) groups with drugs by gavage for 35 days. Learning and memory ability of the treated rats was tested using the Morris water maze (MWM) and novel object recognition (NOR) test, while pathological changes and neuronal death in their hippocampus CA1 were detected via HE staining and Nissl staining. Moreover, we determined antioxidant enzymes by measuring levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in serum, cortex, and hippocampus, whereas changes in the acetylcholine system were determined by evaluating choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities, as well as choline acetylcholine (Ach) content. Results revealed that rats in the WEGN group exhibited significantly lower escape latency, as well as a significantly higher number of targeted crossings and longer residence times in the target quadrant, relative to those in the model group. Notably, rats in the WEGN group spent more time exploring new objects and exhibited lower damage to their hippocampus neuron, had improved learning and memory activity, as well as reversed histological alterations, relative to those in the model group. Meanwhile, biochemical examinations revealed that rats in the WEGN group had significantly lower MDA levels and AChE activities, but significantly higher GSH, SOD, and ChAT activities, as well as Ach content, relative to those in the model group. Overall, these findings indicate that WEGN exerts protective effects on cognitive impairment, neuronal damage, oxidative stress, and choline function in AD rats treated by d -gal/AlCl 3 .

: As the key precursor of coenzyme A synthesis in vivo , D-pantothenic acid plays an important role in maintaining biological function, which is widely applied in the food , pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. At present, it was mainly produced by chemical methods, with serious environmental pollution, therefore, it is urgent to develop an economical, practical, and environmentally friendly biological fermentation method based on microbial chassis cells. Herein, based on our previously developed D-pantothenic acid producing strains, we obtained higher yielding D-pantothenic acid producing strains by systematic metabolic engineering . First, according to the results of CRISPRi experiments, lpd were overexpressed, disrupted the non-PTS (non-phosphoenolpyruvate-pyruvate transport system) as well as enhanced the PTS (phosphoenolpyruvate-pyruvate transport system) allowing precursor accumulation. Subsequently, based on the analysis of metabolic intermediates , the pyruvate bypass pathway was blocked as well as the (R)-pantothenic acid pathway was further enhanced, increasing the titer of D-pantothenic acid to 4.60 g/L. Finally, the organic acid and branched-chain amino acid synthesis pathways were blocked, and in order to accelerate the synthesis of acetolactate and the output of D-pantothenic acid, heterologous acetolactate synthase and pantothenate transfer protein were introduced, which significantly increased the yield of D-pantothenic acid, reach to 6.33 g/L. The final strain in a 5 L bioreactor produced 32.32 g/L D-pantothenic acid with a productivity of 2.33 g/L/h and the high-yielding strain provides an effective platform for biological fermentation to produce D-pantothenic acid.

Water-soluble, biodegradable, nonionic, and biocompatible polymers with multiple functional groups are highly desired for biomedical applications. Here, we report that water-soluble nonionic poly(d/l-serine) is chirality-controllable, biodegradation-controllable, and non-cytotoxic. Hence, it can be a highly sought-after alternative to the widely used poly(ethylene glycol), with an additional advantage of having multiple hydroxyl groups for further functionalization. As one example of its biomedical applications, poly(d/l-serine) demonstrated an obvious cryoprotective effect on the red blood cells. The usage of poly(d/l-serine) in the cryopreservation field would be of great promise to resolve the difficulties in separating cryoprotectants due to toxicity.
