Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are widely acknowledged to be a promising eco-friendly abatement technology of pollutants, and are capable of generating electricity. However, the poor mass transfer and reaction rate in MFCs significantly decrease their treatment capacity for contaminants, especially hydrophobic substances. The present work developed a novel MFC integrated with an airlift (ALR) reactor using a polypyrrole modified anode to promote the bioaccessibility of gaseous o-xylene and attachment of microorganisms. The results indicated that the established ALR-MFC system showed excellent elimination capability, with removal efficiency exceeding 84% even at high o-xylene concentration (1600 mg m−3). The maximum output voltage of 0.549 V and power density of 13.16 mW m−2 obtained by the Monod-type model were approximately twice and sixfold higher than that of a conventional MFC, respectively. According to the microbial community analysis, the superior performances of the ALR-MFC in terms of o-xylene removal and power generation were mainly ascribed to the enrichment of degrader (i.e. Shinella) and electrochemical active bacteria (i.e. Proteiniphilum). Moreover, the electricity generation of the ALR-MFC did not decrease at a high O2 concentration, as O2 was conducive to o-xylene degradation and electron release. The supplication of an external carbon source such as sodium acetate (NaAc) was conducive to increasing output voltage and coulombic efficiency. The electrochemical analysis revealed that released electrons can be transmitted with the action of NADH dehydrogenase to OmcZ, OmcS, and OmcA outer membrane proteins via a direct or indirect pathway, and ended up transferring to the anode directly.

Facilitating sulfur reduction reaction (SRR) is a promising pathway to tackle the polysulfide shuttle effect and enhance the electrochemical performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Catalysts with a solo active site can reduce a reaction barrier of a certain transition-intermediate, but the linear scaling relationship between multi-intermediates still obstructs overall SRR. Herein, we construct tandem Co–O dual sites with accelerating SRR kinetics by loading highly dispersed cobalt sulfide clusters on halloysite. This catalyst features Co with upshifted d -orbital and O with downshifted p-orbital, which cooperatively adsorb long-chain polysulfide and dissociate an S–S bond, thus achieving both optimal adsorption–desorption strength and reduced conversion energy barrier of multi-intermediates in SRR. The Li-S coin batteries using the electrocatalyst endows a high specific capacity of 1224.3 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C after 200 cycles, and enhances cycling stability with a low-capacity decay rate of 0.03% per cycle at 1 C after 1000 cycles. Moreover, the strategy of the tandem Co–O dual sites is further verified in a practical Li-S pouch battery that realizes 1014.1 mAh g −1 for 100 cycles, which opens up a novel avenue for designing electrocatalysts to accelerate multi-step reactions.

High plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels may indicate cardiovascular disease. However, sensitive and selective determination of Hcy remains a major challenge. Herein, we present a sensing strategy for Hcy by surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method along with a specific reaction of o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) and Hcy. The obtained adduct 2-(1-carboxyl-3-thiopropyl)-1-isoindolinone (Hcy-OPA) can be directly detected by SERS using gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) as the substrate. The developed SERS method displays superior sensitivity (low detection limit of 2.50 × 10 −12 mol L −1 ) with a broad linear range (5.00 × 10 −10 −5.00 × 10 −6 mol L −1 ). As a proof of real application, it can be used to detect Hcy in bovine serum samples with a concentration as low as 5.00 × 10 −9 mol L −1 , which is free from the interference of the other amino acids and glutathione.

Photocatalytic U(VI) extraction is considered as the most promising way to solve the current shortage of uranium resources and radioactive contamination. In this work, O-doped hexagonal-cubic CdS phase heterojunction was constructed by a simple thermal treatment and was successfully used for the photoextraction of U(VI) from water bodies. The samples with different heat treatment temperatures have different phase ratios and oxygen doping amounts. The experimental results show that the CdS heat treated at 350 °C (CdS-350) has the best photocatalytic activity, which can extract 80% of uranium within 120 min (m/v CdS-350 = 0.4 mg/g, C U(VI) = 50 ppm). More interestingly, a systematic mechanistic investigation shows that the extraction process is divided into two steps: i.e., photoelectrons and • O 2 − reducing U(VI) to U(IV) first, followed by photoholes and • OH oxidizing U(IV) to insoluble U(VI) (UO 2 (OH) 2 ). The second step of oxidation allows CdS-350 to avoid photocorrosion, resulting in an excellent recycling performance of only 8% decrease in performance after four cycles.

The intramuscular administration of long-acting injectable microparticles elicits a local macrophage uptake resulting in decreased bioavailability. Herein, we developed a ginkgolide B (GB) loaded Solid/Oil/Water (S/O/W) solid lipid microparticles (SLMs) which were modified by hydroxyethyl starch (HES) or poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different surface densities to investigate the influence of surface properties on the cellular uptake and systemic drug exposure. The spherical SLMs with a mean particle size of 10 µm were prepared by melt emulsification and post-insertion method, showing controlled release profile with less than 10 % of GB released in first 2 h. HES-SLMs resulted in lowest degree of RAW264.7 macrophage uptake in vitro and a higher systemic drug exposure in rats than PEG coating SLMs, indicting the capability of thick HES layer of SLMs in evading cellular uptake and sustained GB release. Overall, HES modified SLMs possess a great potential as intramuscular injected drug delivery system to improved bioavailability.

Exploring high-efficiency and stable monolithic structured catalysts is vital for catalytic combustion of volatile organic compounds. Herein, we prepared a series of Pd/δ-MnO2 nanoflower arrays monolithic integrated catalysts (0.01–0.07 wt% theoretical Pd loading) via the hydrothermal growth of δ-MnO2 nanoflowers onto the honeycomb cordierite, which subsequently served as the carrier for loading the Pd nanoparticles (NPs) through the electroless plating route. Moreover, we characterized the resulting monolithic integrated catalysts in detail and evaluated their catalytic activities for toluene combustion, in comparison to the controlled samples including only Pd NPs loading and the δ-MnO2 nanoflower arrays. Amongst all the monolithic samples, the Pd/δ-MnO2 nanoflower arrays monolithic catalyst with 0.05 wt% theoretical Pd loading delivered the best catalytic performance, reaching 90% toluene conversion at 221°C at a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 10,000 h−1. Moreover, this sample displayed superior catalytic activity for o-xylene combustion under a GHSV of 10,000 h−1. The monolithic sample with optimal catalytic activity also displayed excellent catalytic stability after 30 h constant reaction at 210 and 221°C.

Lithium anodes have attracted much attention because of their high energy density, but the existence of lithium dendrites tremendously limits their practical application. Herein, it is creatively proposed to employ N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) as an electrolyte additive to stabilize the solid electrolyte interface. BSTFA is reduced on the lithium anode surface prior to other components to form a passivation layer composed of LiF, Li3N, and SiOx, which not only significantly prevents the continuous consumption of the electrolyte and reduces side reactions but also effectively promotes the uniform deposition of lithium ions with fast Li+ transmission, thereby solving the problem of lithium dendrites. Electrochemical results indicate that BSTFA can obviously reduce polarization in a Li||Li battery at a current density of 1 mA cm–2. Besides, an excellent cycling performance (107 mA h g–1) and Coulombic efficiency (99%) can be obtained for a Li||LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) battery with 0.5 wt % BSTFA at 2 C after 200 cycles, even at a high NCM622 loading of 6 mg cm–2.

The crude oil spillage and large-scale industrial release of oily effluents has led to significant ecological degradation and resource wastage. Traditional superwetting materials encounter intractable challenges for treating surfactant-stabilized oil–water emulsions, including trade-off effect of permeation flux and separation efficiency, and low emulsion processing life. These issues considerably impede advancements in oil–water separation industry. In order to enhance the demulsification durability of materials while ensuring high separation efficiency and flux, this work doped perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) onto the modified sponge surface with superhydrophilic charged surface, and a unique in-air superhydrophilic-oleophobic sponge was prepared. This special surface allows rapid water phase permeation yet offers remarkably more stable oleophobicity compared with traditional underwater oleophobic materials when processing a large amount of emulsions. The intrinsic oleophobicity endows the sponge outstanding fouling resistance and greatly increases the one-cycle emulsion treatment amount up to 1695 L·m −2 . Moreover, the sponge's inherent long permeation channels and surface charge maintain a high separation efficiency of over 97 %. The large pores of the sponges and superhydrophilic surface provide a high permeation flux exceeding 40,000 L·m −2 ·h −1 . The sponge with high separation efficiency, flux, and capacity marks a significant advancement, offering a promising strategy for superwetting material applications in oil-in-water emulsion separation fields.

O-linked-N-acetylglucosaminylation (O-GlcNAcylation) plays a key role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development, and the inhibition of O-GlcNAcylation has therapeutic potential. To decrease the systemic adverse events and increase targeting, we used sialic acid (SA)-decorated liposomes loaded with OSMI-1, an inhibitor of the O-GlcNAcylation, to further improve the anti-HCC effect. Fifty pairs of HCC tissue samples and the cancer genome atlas database were used to analyze the expression of O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) and its effects on prognosis and immune cell infiltration. OSMI-1 cells were treated with SA and liposomes. Western blotting, immunofluorescence, cell proliferation assay, flow cytometry, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunohistochemistry, and tumorigenicity assays were used to investigate the antitumor effect of SA-modified OSMI-1 liposomes in vitro and in vivo. OGT was highly expressed in HCC tissues, negatively correlated with the degree of tumor infiltration of CD8+ and CD4+T cells and prognosis, and positively correlated with the degree of Treg cell infiltration. SA-modified OSMI-1 liposome (OSMI-1-SAL) was synthesized with stable hydrodynamic size distribution. Both in vitro and in vivo, OSMI-1-SAL exhibited satisfactory biosafety and rapid uptake by HCC cells. Compared to free OSMI-1, OSMI-1-SAL had a stronger capacity for suppressing the proliferation and promoting the apoptosis of HCC cells. Moreover, OSMI-1-SAL effectively inhibited tumor initiation and development in mice. OSMI-1-SAL also promoted the release of damage-associated molecular patterns, including anticalreticulin, high-mobility-group protein B1, and adenosine triphosphate, from HCC cells and further promoted the activation and proliferation of the CD8+ and CD4+T cells. In conclusion, the OSMI-1-SAL synthesized in this study can target HCC cells, inhibit tumor proliferation, induce tumor immunogenic cell death, enhance tumor immunogenicity, and promote antitumor immune responses, which has the potential for clinical application in the future.

Nanoparticle delivery of functional molecules or vaccines is an effective method for the treatment of many diseases. This study aims to design ginsenoside Rh2-conjugated O-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC/Rh2) as a drug delivery system and explore its anti-nociceptive effects. O-CMC/Rh2 was synthesized with an esterification reaction, and its chemical composition and morphology were evaluated using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), the attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the in vitro cumulative release of Rh2 from the O-CMC/Rh2 was also evaluated under different pH conditions. The results showed that the ginsenoside Rh2 was successfully conjugated to the O-CMC matrix and exhibited a highly porous structure after conjugation, facilitating the release of Rh2 from O-CMC. Complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) and burn injury-induced pain models were used to evaluate the anti-nociceptive effects of O-CMC/Rh2 on inflammatory pain. O-CMC/Rh2 reduced CFA-induced pain hypersensitivity in a dose-dependent manner and had a longer analgesic effect than Rh2. In addition, O-CMC/Rh2 also relieved the chronic pain induced by bury injury. These results indicated that O-CMC/Rh2 could be useful in reducing inflammatory pain, thus possessing a potential medicinal application in pain therapy.Keywords:O-carboxymethyl chitosan;ginsenoside Rh2;anti-nociception;inflammatory pain

Catalytic oxidation of o -chloroaniline ( o- ClA) in hot compressed water (HCW) was investigated in a fused quartz tube reactor (FQTR) to determine the effects of catalyst, temperature, oxygen stoichiometric ratio (OSR) and reaction time on o- ClA mineralization, total nitrogen (TN) removal rate and nitrogen-containing products distribution. The results showed that o -ClA can be effectively degraded in HCW. With the increased of OSR, retention time and temperature or added of Mn 2 O 3 as catalyst, the mineralization rate of o -ClA and the removal rate of TN increased. Ammonia-N was the main nitrogen-containing intermediate product of o -ClA degradation, however, when the oxidant was excessive, ammonia-N was oxidized to form nitrate-N. Althought the catalytic effect of Mn 2 O 3 on the mineralization of o -ClA was not outstanding, it promoted the removal of ammonia-N from the benzene ring, improved the degradtion of ammonia-N, and inhibited the production of nitrate-N. GC–MS analyzed results indicated that o -chlorophenol was the main degradation intermediate product of o -ClA in HCWO process. Meanwhile, the potential degradation pathway of o -ClA was proposed. This work thus provides basic knowledge about o -ClA catalytic oxidation removal in HCW process.

Hydrolytic cleavage of C–O bond was systematically studied in acidic/alkaline aqueous solution. For phenethoxybenzene (PEB) hydrolysis, 2-phenylethanol and phenol were formed as main products in AlCl 3 solutions, whereas styrene was preferred with Na 2 CO 3 . After a quantitative evaluation of the kinetics of elementary steps, it was concluded that both AlCl 3 and Na 2 CO 3 promoted protons assisted C–O bond scission in H 2 O, whereas alkaline enhanced the dehydration of produced 2-phenylethanol. Kinetic and isotope labeling experiments demonstrated that the hydrolytic rates of PEB were first order with respect to substrate concentrations, hydrolytic cleavage of C–O bond was rate-determining step. The study shed light on the promotional effects and hydrolytic mechanism over acid/base-catalyzed lignin depolymerization in water. Graphic abstract
