Restoring motor function remains a primary goal in the treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the inflammatory microenvironment that develops after injury poses a significant barrier to effective neural repair. Addressing this challenge requires the development of bioactive scaffolds with potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as reduced implantation-induced damage. In this study, we created a novel composite biomaterial scaffold with high mechanical strength and excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities by dispersing in situ self-assembled tea polyphenol-magnesium nanoparticles (TPs-Mg NPs) into gelatin methacryloyl hydrogel (GelMA) microneedle patches (TPs-Mg MN). Our results demonstrate that TPs-Mg MN effectively modulates the inflammatory response by promoting macrophage polarization through suppression of the NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby alleviating reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated oxidative damage. Following implantation in a rat SCI model, TPs-Mg MN significantly enhanced motor functional recovery. Behavioral analyses revealed that this recovery was achieved through multiple mechanisms, including reduced oxidative stress, inflammation, and scar formation at the injury site, as well as enhanced angiogenesis and neurogenesis within the spinal cord tissue. This study presents a multifunctional combinatorial strategy for mitigating ROS-induced oxidative stress, offering broad potential applications in SCI and other central nervous system disorders.

Wound healing is a dynamic, tightly orchestrated cascade that is readily disrupted by excessive exudate, bacterial infection, and persistent oxidative stress. Conventional dressings remain constrained by poor biocompatibility, inadequate exudate management, and isolated, single functions, and consequently fail to satisfy the demands of complex wound repair. Here, an asymmetric Janus nanofibrous membrane (PGPT/PM) is developed via sequential electrospinning, featuring the deliberate spatial compartmentalization of supramolecular poly-L-lysine–tannic acid (PLL–TA) complexes and coordination-driven TA-Sr²⁺ nanoparticles. Confining PLL–TA within the inner polycaprolactone/gelatin layer resolves tannic acid phase separation in spinning dopes and accelerates hydration (0.8 s), mounting immediate broad-spectrum bactericidal activity (>94% against S. aureus and E. coli) and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching at the wound interface. Meanwhile, anchoring TA-Sr²⁺ nanoparticles in the outer hydrophobic PCL layer maintains a sharp wettability disparity that autonomously pumps excess exudate outward within 40 s while enforcing steady, prolonged Sr²⁺ release to stimulate endothelial migration. In a full-thickness infected wound model, the dressing reached a healing rate of 94.30 ± 1.73% by day 9 and achieved complete re-epithelialization by day 11. This strategy of pairing directional fluid pumping with spatiotemporally orchestrated non-antibiotic bioactivities offers a robust platform for managing complex infected wounds. A multifunctional Janus wound dressing was fabricated by electrospinning layer-by-layer assembly. Tannic acid-Sr²⁺ nanoparticles were introduced into the hydrophobic layer, and poly-L-lysine‒polyphenol complexes were introduced into the hydrophilic layer while retaining the inherent hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the materials. The prepared Janus film integrates unidirectional liquid transport and antibacterial, antioxidant and pro-angiogenic functions. This study provides a targeted solution for wound healing and demonstrates great application potential in wound dressings. Download: Download high-res image (203KB) Download: Download full-size image

Curcumin (Cur) and anthocyanin (Ant) are typical plant-derived bioactives with promising biological benefits, but poor stability and bioavailability limit their applications. To address these challenges, we engineered a targeted co-delivery platform by systematically comparing two representative, probiotic-derived extracellular vesicle carriers: outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) from Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 and extracellular vesicles (EVs) from Lactobacillus plantarum . Encapsulation efficiency (EE) of Cur was 41.6% for OMVs and 35.9% for EVs, whereas EE of Ant was 25.4% and 24.6%, respectively. Both vesicle types were further synergistically functionalized with specifically acylated epigallocatechin palmitate (EGCp) and octenyl succinic anhydride-grafted hyaluronic acid (OSA-HA). The incorporation efficiency of EGCp was 27.2% for OMVs and 37.3% for EVs. The self-assembly process yielded composite nanovesicles with a reduced particle size (OMVs: from 165.6 nm to 143.2 nm; EVs: from 156.8 nm to 120.8 nm) and a more negatively charged surface (from −20.8 mV to −37.5 mV for OMVs; from −18.3 mV to −35.3 mV for EVs) compared to their native counterparts, indicating improved colloidal properties. In addition, both engineered nanovesicles effectively protected the encapsulated bioactives, significantly enhancing their stability against simulated gastrointestinal digestion and oxidative stress. For example, the retention of Cur under oxidative conditions increased from 24.2% in unmodified OMVs to 69.1% in the optimized formulation within 2 h. Cellular uptake assays confirmed the OSA-HA coating achieved targeted delivery to inflammatory macrophages, with OSA-HA-modified OMVs exhibiting higher cellular internalization (75.4% at 12 h) than similarly modified EVs (61.8% at 12 h). While both types of functionalized nanovesicles enhanced intracellular antioxidant activity to a similar extent, the OMV-based system demonstrated superior suppression of pro-inflammatory mediators (NO, TNF-α, and IL-6) in mitigating lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cell damage. This comparative study establishes a biocompatible probiotic-based colloidal platform, demonstrating the potential of two selected engineered probiotic vesicles and functionalized polysaccharides for the encapsulation and targeted cellular delivery of sensitive bioactive compounds.

Solar-driven interface evaporation technology offers
a green and
sustainable solution to alleviate the global freshwater crisis. However,
traditional hydrogel evaporators generally have problems such as small
pore diameters, limited water transmission, complex preparation processes,
and the high cost of photothermal materials. In this study, a green
and low-cost soybean protein isolate (SPI)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/tea
leaf residue (SPT) biomass porous sponge solar evaporator was developed
based on the salting-out effect-induced phase separation strategy
and the tea polyphenol (TP)-Fe 3+ complex blackening strategy.
The whole preparation process of SPT has low energy consumption and
high efficiency. The mechanical properties, microscopic pore structure,
hydrophilicity, and photothermal behavior of the SPT sponge were measured.
The results show that SPT has excellent light absorption performance,
achieving an absorption rate of 92.6% in full-spectrum sunlight. DSC
results showed that SPT has a low evaporation enthalpy of 1478 J/g.
SPT achieves a pure water evaporation rate of 3.30 kg m –2 h –1 and an evaporation efficiency of 94.88% under
1 sun. Meanwhile, SPT also demonstrated outstanding salt resistance
and stability and exhibited excellent purification performance for
real seawater. This work has developed an environmentally friendly
and cost-effective strategy to fabricate an efficient biomass material-based
solar evaporator, which can be used for long-term sustainable seawater
desalination.

Proteins and polysaccharides are widely used to construct drug delivery systems, while oat polyphenols exhibit strong antioxidant properties. Despite its antioxidant capacity, curcumin remains inherently unstable. In this study, sodium caseinate (SC) -polyphenol and SC-polysaccary-polyphenol conjugates were prepared by ultrasound-assisted enzymatic method, and the HIPE system was constructed to improve the stability of curcumin. Intrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy demonstrated a marked decrease in maximum emission intensity of SC-chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) conjugates, confirming fluorescence quenching through covalent SC-polysaccharide cross-linking. SC-CMC conjugates exhibited significantly higher surface hydrophobicity. In vitro digestion experiments demonstrated that HIPEs prepared with CMC achieved higher curcumin retention rates. Curcumin retention in HIPE systems showed no significant variation across pH 3.0–7.0, with polyphenol incorporation effectively mitigating pH-dependent retention fluctuations ( p < 0.01). Notably, the pH sensitivity of curcumin was reduced by the addition of polyphenols. The HIPE-based system significantly enhanced curcumin stability and shows potential for the targeted delivery of bioactive conjugates.

To address the challenges encountered by conventional antioxidants, such as migration, toxicity, and single aging resistance mechanisms, which fail to meet the demands for high performance and sustainability. In this study, a series of multi-mechanistic bio-based antioxidants (PDTA-RE) featuring polyphenol-thiourea-rare earth synergy were designed through a sequential “polymerization-grafting-complexation” strategy. Then, the thermo-oxidative aging resistance of composites was evaluated via 121 °C accelerated aging tests, thermal analysis, and kinetic analysis of thermal-oxidative decomposition. Following 120 hours of aging, the PDTASc/NBR composites exhibited a tensile strength retention rate of 93.63% and an aging coefficient ( K ) of 0.61, which were 79.85% and 258.82% higher than those of Neat/NBR, respectively, while superior to commercial antioxidants. Moreover, polyphenolic groups scavenge free radicals, thiourea mercapto decompose hydroperoxides, and rare earth ions trap residual radicals. Additionally, the polymerized framework and double bond anchoring endowed PDTA-RE with excellent anti-migration ability, avoiding high-temperature efficacy loss.

In this work, chitosan was modified by extracting the polyphenols rich in pomegranate peels to prepare the bio-composite material (PPPs-CS), which was applied to capture the dispersed metal germanium (Ge(IV)) in wastewater. The experimental results indicate that PPPs-CS exhibits the best adsorption performance for Ge(IV) at pH 7.0 with a dosage of 0.7 g/L. The adsorption behavior conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model, with the maximum adsorption capacity fitted by the Langmuir model reaching 71.34 mg/g. The results of dynamic adsorption mass transfer simulations showed that the capture behavior of PPPs-CS on Ge(IV) was dominated by the chemical adsorption of monomolecular layer. The adsorption partition coefficient of PPPs-CS for Ge(IV) with coexisting metal ions of Mn(II), Cd(II), Ca(II) and Ga(III) was as high as 11.23 L/g, exhibiting a selectivity coefficient more than 3.5 times higher than that of competing ions and demonstrating superior selectivity. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, the capture rate was still greater than 87 %. DFT calculations indicated that the uptake of Ge(IV) by PPPs-CS might be due to the ion exchange and complexation between the catechol groups on the surface of the PPPs-CS and Ge(OH) 4 . The pomegranate peel polyphenols could effectively improve the diversity and chemistry of the active sites for Ge(IV) binding by chitosan and enhance the specific recognition performance for Ge(IV). Overall, PPPs-CS has significant advantages and potential as environmentally friendly and cost-effective materials for the recovery of Ge(IV) from wastewater.

Non-covalent interactions between soybean storage proteins β-conglycinin (7S) and glycinin (11S) and two tea polyphenols, catechin and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), were examined to elucidate their effects on protein conformation, stability, digestibility, allergenicity, and antioxidant capacity. Due to its smaller molecular size, catechin more easily penetrated the hydrophobic cores of proteins, yielding higher binding stoichiometry and concentration-dependent aggregation. At 4 mM, extensive aggregation masked proteolytic cleavage sites, reducing gastrointestinal digestibility by 7.3 % for 7S and 15.1 % for 11S. In contrast, EGCG, with an additional galloyl moiety and a denser hydroxyl network, interacted with proteins through synergistic hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and hydrophobic forces. It produced more stable supramolecular complexes with much larger diameters (462.2 ± 6.8 nm for 11S-EGCG, versus 30.3 ± 1.5 nm for native 11S), and lowered IgE-binding capacity by approximately 19.5–38.7 %, probably through epitope masking and surface-charge changes. For both polyphenols, binding significantly decreased solvent accessibility of hydrophobic regions, reorganized secondary structure (α-helix loss and β-sheet gain), and markedly enhanced intrinsic antioxidant capacity. These findings demonstrate that selecting an appropriate polyphenol type and dose can simultaneously confer hypoallergenic potential, controlled digestibility, and elevated antioxidant function. These findings highlight the potential of non-covalent protein-polyphenol assemblies to develop plant-based foods and nutraceuticals with improved health benefits.

Skin barrier impairment is critical in the development of atopic dermatitis (AD), increasing vulnerability to external pathogens and disrupting cell metabolism, which leads to inflammatory stress and immune imbalance. In this study, a natural turmeric-derived nanovesicle (TDNV)-laden metal polyphenol hydrogel, termed Fe-HD@TDNV is proposed, to synergistically restore the compromised skin barrier in AD through a dual-repair strategy. The TDNV effectively regulates metabolic activity by upregulating the expression of skin barrier proteins, antioxidant enzymes, and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in keratinocytes, thereby reinforcing barrier integrity and combating pathogens. Simultaneously, the Fe-HD hydrogel, cross-linked by Fe 3 ⁺ ions and hyaluronic acid-graft-dopamine (HD), provides superior skin compatibility and establishes a low oxidative stress environment for potentiating the therapeutic efficacy of TDNV. By improving skin barrier conditions, the Fe-HD@TDNV hydrogel exhibited desirable performance in maintaining better skin hydration, reducing epidermal thickness, and decreasing abnormal immune responses in acute skin disruption models and AD models. This work is expected to offer insights into the cross-kingdom regulation between plant-derived nanovesicles and mammals, as well as the design of disease-specific dual-functional repair strategies.

Effective protection against X-ray is the premise of utilizing the X-ray, thus it is critical to develop novel X-ray shielding materials with both low density and high X-ray attenuation efficiency. As the even distribution of high-Z element components is of great significance for increasing the attenuation efficiency of X-ray shielding materials, in this study, the microfiber membrane (MFM), a type of synthetic leather featuring hierarchical structure was chosen to provide large surface area for the dispersion of rare earth (RE) element. Meanwhile, plant polyphenol was utilized to achieve the stable loading and uniform dispersion of the Ce or Er into MFM. Benefiting from the assistance of polyphenol and hierarchical structure of MFM, the even dispersion of RE element was successfully realized. The resultant shielding materials displayed approximately 10% superior X-ray attenuation efficiency compared to that without polyphenol, and an averagely 9% increment in X-ray attenuation efficiency than that without hierarchical structure. Moreover, the obtained composite with a thickness of 2.8 mm displayed superior X-ray shielding performance compared to 0.25 mm lead sheet in 16–83 keV and retained an ultralow density of 1.4 g cm –3 . Our research results would shed new light on the manufacture of high-performance X-ray shielding materials with excellent X-ray shielding performance.

As a typical thermosetting polymer, epoxy resin (EP) is severely limited in expanding its applications in high-end fields due to its inherent brittleness and flammability. In this study, a novel flame retardant, namely PPCD-Fe, was designed and synthesized to simultaneously enhance the flame-retardant efficiency and mechanical properties of EP. The results demonstrated that with the incorporation of merely 2 wt% PPCD-Fe, the composite passed the UL-94 V -0 rating, and its limiting oxygen index (LOI) was significantly increased to 33.1%. Furthermore, compared with pure EP, the peak heat release rate (PHRR), smoke production rate (SPR), and carbon monoxide yield (COP) of the composite were reduced by 52.9%, 38.7%, and 56.7% respectively, indicating a substantial improvement in flame retardance and smoke suppression performance. Meanwhile, the impact strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength of the composite increased by 256.3%, 98.6%, and 44.5% respectively comparing to that of EP. Moreover, the degradation products of flame-retardant epoxy resin (FREP) could be compounded with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare thermally insulating and flame-retarding aerogels without complex separation and purification processes. When the addition amount of degradation products was 5 wt%, the PHRR of the aerogel was reduced by 35.9% compared with pure PVA aerogel, demonstrating excellent secondary application value.

Green tea is highly popular due to its richness in polyphenols exhibiting broad bioactivities. Tea polyphenols, primarily catechins and flavonoids, demonstrate health benefits following biotransformation by the gut microbiota to overcome limited bioavailability. However, metabolites and interaction between green tea polyphenol and the gut microbiota remains to be fully elucidated. This study investigates the biotransformation of metabolites and interaction between human gut microbiota (HGM) and green tea extract (GTE) through in vitro anaerobic fermentation. Temporal bioactivity assessments demonstrated that fermentation-enhanced antioxidant capacity and inhibition potential ofα-glucosidase,α-amylase and pancreatic lipase peak at 6 h, showing strong correlations with polyphenol and flavonoid biotransformation kinetics. Using the untargeted metabolomics approach, 55 characteristic differential compounds during the fermentation process in GTE were characterized, including 15 catechins, 29 flavonoids, five organic acids and six other phytochemicals. Furthermore, nine microbial-transformed metabolites derived from GTE flavonoids were identified and the corresponding metabolic pathways were proposed simultaneously. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that GTE significantly enhanced gut microbiota diversity and induced structural reorganization, specifically enriching genera such asBacteroides,Bifidobacterium,LactococcusandEnterococcus, which are likely involved in flavonoid biotransformation of GTE. Thus, the findings provide new insights for elucidating microbiota-mediated metabolites of green tea polyphenol, and their bidirectional interactions in the human gut.
