Garnet-like Li 6.8 La 3 Zr 1.8 Bi 0.2 O 12 (LLZBO) + x mol.% Al 2 O 3 ( x = 0, 1.25, 2.50) lithium ionic electrolytes were prepared by conventional solid state reaction method under two different sintering temperatures of 1000°C and 1100°C. XPS, induced coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), XRD and AC impedance spectroscopy were applied to investigate the bismuth valance, lithium concentration, phase structure and lithium ionic conductivity, respectively. Electrical measurement demonstrated that ionic conductivity of Al-added LLZBO compounds could be obviously improved when the sample sintering temperature increased from 1000°C to 1100°C. The highest ionic conductivity 6.3×10 -5 S/cm was obtained in the LLZBO-1.25%Al sample sintered at 1100°C, in consistent with the lowest activation energy 0.45 eV for the lithium ion migration. The mechanism related with good ionic conductivity in the Al-added LLZBO sample was attributed to the lattice distortion induced by the partial Al substitution at Zr sites, which is helpful to improve the migration ability of Li ions in lattice.

Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) decorated with rhodamine 6G Schiff base, which exhibit high selectivity and sensitivity toward Al3+ over other common metal ions in aqueous media under a physiological pH window via a 1 : 1 binding mode, have been synthesized and characterized. The resulting conjugate 1c renders the rhodamine 6G Schiff base unit more water soluble, and the detection limit reaches 0.3 ppb in water. Moreover, 1c can detect Al3+ in a wide pH span (5.0–11.0) and enrich/remove excess Al3+ in water via an external magnetic field, which indicates that it has more potential and further practical applications for biology and toxicology. Furthermore, 1c provides good fluorescent imaging of Al3+ in living cells.

Metallic Al is an attractive anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its relatively high theoretical capacity, low cost, and natural abundance. However, the practical application of Al-based anodes is impeded by issues such as significant volume change, low Coulombic efficiency, growth of dendrites, and sluggish lithium-ion transport during cycling. Herein, we design the inorganic–organic hybrid materials composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) with controllable morphologies and porosity to construct a 3D transport channel and gradient multisite adsorption for Li+ on the Al anode surface. Benefiting from the uniform porous structure and stronger adsorption effect of the PEO–LiTFSI, Li+ is first adsorbed onto PEO–LiTFSI, redistributing Li-ion flux. Second, the adsorbed Li+ and Li+ in LiTFSI undergo an alloying reaction with the Al anode. The two reaction processes redistribute Li-ion flux and ensure more homogeneous transport properties compared to the direct alloying reaction with Al. As a result, the NCM||Al–PEO–LiTFSI cell delivered stable cycling behavior over 500 cycles under a high 1 C cycling rate, achieving a capacity retention rate of 92.8%. The excellent rate performance was also achieved at 222.4 mA h/g at 5 C, indicating the superior practical application prospect of Al-based batteries. The proposed surface modification strategy furnishes a practicable pathway for the construction of highly stable Al anodes, thereby enabling their potential for practical applications.

The advancement of infrared-visible compatible stealth materials is pivotal for strengthening national defense security and driving the next frontier in stealth material technologies. Here, we propose a modification strategy for Al/porous SiO 2 (Al/p-SiO 2 ) composite films by incorporating Ag particles to modulate their spectral response, thereby achieving infrared-visible compatible stealth. The most outstanding Al/p-SiO 2 /Ag-20 exhibits excellent thermal stability, with emissivity of 0.27 in the mid-wave infrared (3-5 μm) and 0.19 in the long-wave infrared (8-14 μm) bands. In addition, compared with Al/p-SiO 2 , its visible reflectivity is reduced by 0.35, reaching as low as 0.38 (380-780 nm). To meet diverse application requirements, flexible and patterned Al/p-SiO 2 /Ag-20 composite film was fabricated, exhibiting excellent stealth performance, particularly suitable for wearable devices and fabrics. It is worth mentioning that the fabrication of Al/p-SiO 2 /Ag composite films only requires a simple, low-cost and scalable process, which provides a solid foundation for large-scale application of infrared-visible compatible stealth materials.

The membrane fouling is a challenge for the application of ultrafiltration , one of which the cake layer is the main influencing factor. However, the pros and cons of cake layer generated in the coagulation-ultrafiltration (C-UF) process needs to be explored. This study was carried out to investigate that the effect of a cake layer on the membrane fouling behavior with three Al species coagulants for different effluents. The results indicated that the fouling mechanisms of cake layer under different effluents conditions were diverse due to the particle characteristics. The Al hydrolysis that accompanied by the interaction between Al species coagulants and the –OH/-COOH functional groups of humic acid were conducted, and the effluents of Al a presented lighter membrane fouling. Meanwhile, the components mainly trapped by the membrane were soluble microbial products, protein, polypeptides and amino acid-like materials during C-UF process, because of the decrease in the proportion of fluorescence response. For the less/compact cake layer (system 2), the average of the external and internal membrane resistances were about 25 × 10 10 m −1 and 21 × 10 10 m −1 , respectively, which caused severe membrane fouling. It was concluded that the poriferous/loose cake layer could effectively alleviate membrane fouling by re-adsorbing some organic matters.

Silicon (Si) has a significant influence on the cellular structure and microstructure of the aluminum (Al) foams, which in turn will notably affect their mechanical responses. Herein, the Al–Si foams are fabricated via a novel powder metallurgy foaming approaches with multiple Si contents to investigate the role of Si concentrations on the structural and mechanical properties. The results show that the certain contents of Si can not only delay the expansion process, but also increase the maximum expansion rate to improve the cellular structure. Specifically, the AlSi7 foams process the optimal comprehensive compressive properties of yield stress (4.36 MPa), plateau stress (6.02 MPa), and energy absorption capacity (3.47 MJ m −3 ) with the relative density of 0.15. However, excessive Si can decrease the expansion rate and deteriorate the cellular structure. Moreover, the deformation mode of the Al foams during compressive process converts from plastic mode to brittle mode by the adding of Si. Generally, the AlSi7 foams possess an excellent trade-off between toughness and brittleness and exhibit the optimal mechanical responses.

Ag/SiO2–Al2O3 aerogel composites with different molar ratio of Si to Al were prepared by the sol–gel synthesis followed by drying under atmospheric pressure and then characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET, SEM, XRF, TG-DTG, and Py-FTIR, respectively. The effect of doping Al on their physicochemical properties and adsorption desulfurization performance was investigated in comparison with Ag/SiO2. The incorporation of Al in Ag/SiO2 resulted in a gradual decrease in the specific surface area, an increase in the actual content of Ag, and an appearance of Brönsted acid centers. The actual content of Ag in Ag/SiO2–Al2O3-n increased first and then decreased with the increase in Al content. Doping Al in Ag/SiO2 led to an improvement in the adsorption capacity and the adsorptive selectivity for thiophene at the presence of toluene and cyclohexene, as well as the solvent washing regeneration performance, attributed to the adsorption of thiophenics on Ag/SiO2–Al2O3-n by π-complexation of Ag(I) and the acid–base interaction of Lewis and Brönsted centers with thiophenics simultaneously, and the increase in the actual content of Ag in the adsorbents. Ag/SiO2–Al2O3-100 had the largest adsorption capacity for thiophene and benzothiophene, 12.2 mg of S/gads (0.57 mmol of S/mmol of (Ag + Al)) and 17.7 mg of S/gads (0.53 mmol of S/mmol of (Ag + Al)), respectively.

The ignition process of aluminum powder significantly affects propellant combustion and agglomeration, making the control of ignition through adjusting the surface coating thickness an effective strategy. In this study, core-shell Al@PTFE composites with tunable PTFE shell thickness were successfully synthesized via plasma pretreatment combined with emulsion polymerization. Characterization results demonstrate that the PTFE shell thickness in Al@PTFE can be precisely regulated from 58 nm to 286 nm, corresponding to a mass fraction range of 4.6 wt% to 16.7 wt%. It was found that the PTFE coating not only effectively lowers the laser ignition threshold and shortens the ignition delay of aluminum but also enhances its ignition performance under high-temperature conditions. The underlying mechanism is that the abundant reactive fluorine species released during the thermal decomposition of PTFE can remove the surface Al₂O₃ oxide layer to form AlF₃, thereby significantly reducing both the ignition temperature and delay time. However, in propellant applications, although Al@PTFE composites significantly mitigate aluminum particle agglomeration during combustion, they simultaneously lead to a decrease in the overall burning rate and combustion temperature of the propellant. The tunable shell thickness strategy demonstrated here opens a new avenue for developing high‑performance aluminum fuels with controllable ignition and agglomeration characteristics for solid rocket propulsion.

Enhancing the combustion efficiency of aluminum (Al) is a crucial research direction for solid propellants. Constructing an efficient fuel-oxidizer interaction environment through interfacial regulation is an effective approach. In this work, a synergistic strategy integrating polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-mediated interface regulation with core-shell structuring was adopted to fabricate a dual-layer core-shell Al@PVDF@HMX composite energetic materials (EMs). This composite exhibits an ultra-high heat of explosion (8416.8 J·g⁻¹), which is over 52.8% higher than that of the Al+HMX physical mixture. Explosion residue measurements show that the primary combustion products were AlN and Al₂O₃, and no large Al agglomerations were detected, meaning that the inhibition of Al particle agglomeration by the dual-layer core-shell structure and the shell-breaking combustion effect induced by PVDF should be the key factors for the heat of explosion enhancement. Simultaneously, it was demonstrated that the composite is superior safety to HMX, as its impact sensitivity (8%) and friction sensitivity (36%) are decreased by 91% and 64%, respectively. This work indicates that the dual-layer core-shell structured Al@PVDF@HMX can synergistically improve the reaction between Al and HMX, providing a new approach to improve the energy efficiency and safety of EMs.

Fe-Mn based layered transition metal oxides are compelling candidates for sodium-ion cathodes owing to their high specific capacity and cost-effectiveness. However, their practical application is hampered by inherent challenges including the Jahn-Teller effect, lattice oxygen loss, transition metal dissolution. In this study, Al/Ti co-doped Na0.67Fe0.4Mn0.4Al0.1Ti0.1O2 (FM-AT) cathode is proposed and prepared. The introduction of Al/Ti, creating strong Al-O and Ti-O bonds, effectively stabilizes the lattice oxygen and elevates the reversibility of anionic redox reactions. Furthermore, the stability of the transition metal layer is effectively enhanced, suppressing transition metal dissolution and the P2-OP4 phase transition associated with TMO2 layer slippage at deep charge states. The FM-AT demonstrates excellent cycling stability, with a capacity of 137.1 mAh g-1 under 20 mA g-1 and a capacity retention of 85.5% after 50 cycles (55.7% for the pristine FM cathode). Even after 200 cycles under 200 mA g-1, a capacity retention of 72.1% is achieved (versus 20.9% for the FM). This work offers a novel method for enhancing the structural stability of iron-manganese based electrode and designing cost-effective, high-performance sodium ion cathodes.

The control of air humidity has become a critical challenge amid rapid industrialization and urbanization. Membrane-based dehumidification offers an energy-efficient alternative to conventional methods, yet its performance is often constrained by the inherent trade-off between permeability and selectivity. The mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) incorporating nanofillers present a promising strategy to overcome this limitation. In this work, two hydrophilic aluminum-based metal-organic frameworks (Al-MOFs), CAU-23 and MIL-160, were incorporated into Pebax®1074 matrix to fabricate MMMs for air dehumidification. The introduction of hydrophilic Al-MOFs particles enlarges the inter-chain spacing in polymers and increases the fractional free volume (FFV), thereby enhancing water vapor permeability. Simultaneously, the nanochannels formed by the Al-MOFs provide preferential adsorption and transport pathways for water molecules, leading to markedly improved water vapor selectivity. Owing to its superior hydrophilicity, the MIL-160/Pebax membrane achieved higher H 2 O/N 2 separation performance (119 % up) than the CAU-23 counterpart (42 % up) relative to the pure counterpart. At an optimal loading of 5 wt%, the MMMs exhibited simultaneous improvements in both water vapor permeability and selectivity, this concurrent breakthrough underscores the strong potential of hydrophilic Al-based MOF MMMs for scalable application in industrial dehumidification processes.

A MIL-53(Al)-functionalized terahertz metasurface sensor was developed for the room-temperature detection of styrene, a potential volatile biomarker associated with lung cancer. The sensor combines the localized electromagnetic field enhancement of the terahertz metasurface with the adsorption enrichment capability of MIL-53(Al). Benefiting from the flexible one-dimensional channels, the size-compatible pore environment of MIL-53(Al), and the possible π–π and host–guest interactions between styrene molecules and the terephthalate linkers, the functionalized metasurface exhibits an enhanced sensing response toward styrene. APTES was introduced as an interfacial coupling layer to improve the immobilization and dispersion of MIL-53(Al) nanocrystallites on the metasurface. SEM and FTIR characterizations confirmed the formation of a nanocrystallite-stacked MIL-53(Al) coating and the successful introduction of both APTES and MIL-53(Al) onto the sensor surface. The optimized sensor achieved a sensitivity of 0.37 GHz/ppm and a limit of detection of 1 ppm within the concentration range of 1–100 ppm. In addition, the sensor showed good selectivity against several interfering VOCs, as well as acceptable repeatability and stability. This work provides a feasible strategy for integrating flexible MOF adsorbents with terahertz metasurfaces, offering a potential platform for rapid, label-free, and room-temperature detection of trace aromatic VOCs.
