A novel colorimetric strategy for sensitive and rapid sensing of ascorbic acid using cobalt oxyhydroxide nanoflakes and 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine

Danyang Ji,Yahui Du,Hongmin Meng,Lin Zhang,Zhongming Huang,Yalei Hu,Jianjun Li,Fei Yu,Zhaohui Li

In this work, cobalt oxyhydroxide nanoflakes (CoOOH nanoflakes) were reported to possess a high oxidizability toward TMB for the first time and based on which we have developed a new strategy for qualitative and quantitative detection of ascorbic acid (AA). In our design, CoOOH nanoflakes can directly oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to oxTMB with an obvious blue color emerging, and AA can selectively inhibit the oxidation of TMB to oxTMB by resolving CoOOH nanoflakes to Co 2+ , resulting in a decrease in the absorbance of oxTMB and bleaching of blue color. As such, the concentration of AA could be identified very easily by UV–vis spectroscopy and bare eyes. Under optimal conditions, this sensing platform showed a highly sensitive response to AA with a detection limit of 142   nM and a short assay time of 5   min. This assay was also successfully used to quantify AA in human serum samples and practical food samples. Importantly, using this fabricated sensing strategy, we have further developed a paper-based strip sensor for AA detection with satisfactory results, showing its great potential for point of care applications.

Ultrafast Excited-State Dynamics of Cytosine Aza-Derivative and Analogues

Zhongneng Zhou,Xueyao Zhou,Xueli Wang,Bin Jiang,Yongle Li,Jinquan Chen,Jianhua Xu

Excited state dynamics of 5-azacytosine (5-AC), 2,4-diamino-1,3,5-triazine (2,4-DT), and 2-amino-1,3,5-triazine (2-AT) were comprehensively investigated by steady state absorption, fluorescence, and femtosecond transient absorption measurements. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations were performed to help assign the absorption bands and understand the excited state decay mechanisms. The experimental results of excited singlet state dynamics for 5-AC, 2,4-DT, and 2-AT with femtosecond time resolution were reported for the first time. Two distinct decay pathways, with ∼1 ps and tens of picosecond lifetimes, were observed in 5-AC. Only one decay pathway with 17 ps lifetime was observed in 2,4-DT while an emissive state was found in 2-AT. TDDFT calculations suggest that 5-AC has a dark nπ* (S1) state below the first allowed ππ* (S2) state, which leads to the ultrafast decay of the ππ* state. In 2,4-DT, there is no dark nπ* state below the bright ππ* (S1) state and the 17 ps lifetime is assigned to the relaxation from the ππ* (S1) state to ground state. Two dark nπ* states (S1 and S2) were found in 2-AT, which exhibits much more complex excited state dynamics compared with the other two. Photoluminescence in 2-AT has been confirmed to be fluorescence emission from its bright ππ* (S3) state. Our results strongly suggest that electronic structures are very sensitive to the substitution on the triazine ring and that the photophysical properties of nucleic acid analogues depend highly on their molecular structures.

Enzyme-free colorimetric detection of uric acid on the basis of MnO2 nanosheets - mediated oxidation of 3, 3′, 5, 5′- tetramethylbenzidine

Li Huang,Shangying Qin,Yuanjin Xu,Shiqi Cheng,Jin Yang,Yilin Wang

MnO 2 nanosheets (MnO 2 NSs) were prepared and used as both oxidant of 3, 3′, 5, 5′- tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and recognizer of UA, a simple colorimetric approach for sensitive detection of uric acid (UA) was established. In the medium of weak acid, MnO 2 NSs exhibited strong oxidation capacity and could oxidize colorless TMB to generate a blue oxidation product (oxTMB) with an absorbance signal. However, the introduction of UA could inhibit MnO 2 NSs - mediated TMB oxidation and reduce the formation of oxTMB, resulting in the blue fading and the absorbance weakening. Under the conditions of incubation time 20 min, pH 3.0, TMB 0.5 mM, and MnO 2 NSs 50 μM, the decrease in absorbance was linearly dependent on UA concentration in the range of 0.5–30.0 μM with a detection limit of 0.21 μM. Furthermore, the approach has been applied for determining UA in human urine samples with recoveries between 93.1 and 102.4 % and relative standard deviation less than 3.0 %.

Lignin meets MOFs: Design of spherical carbon-based NiCo catalysts for catalytic hydrogen transfer of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 5-methylfurfuryl alcohol

Jiantao Su,Haihong Xia,Fei Ge,Xiaohui Yang,Minghao Zhou,Jianchun Jiang

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a very important chemical intermediate, while it can be hydrogenated into various value-added chemicals. However, the hydrogenation of HMF over non-precious metal catalysts still remains as a challenging problem. In this study, lignosulfonate (LS) was used as carbon resource, and successfully introduced into MOFs structure. Then, a series of lignin-MOF derived catalysts (Ni n Co-MOF-LS) were prepared by the hydrothermal method with different ratios of Ni and Co metals. The selective conversion of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 5-methylfurfuryl alcohol (MFA) was achieved over Ni n Co-MOF-LS catalyst in a N 2 atmosphere with isopropanol as solvent. The Ni/Co metal ratios and calcination temperature played a key role in the catalytic performance of the catalyst. The catalysts showed good catalytic performance in the selective hydrogenation of HMF to MFA through an in-depth study of various reaction parameters such as temperature, pressure, reaction time and catalyst dosage. The coordination of lignosulfonate and MOFs provide a novel alternative for the utilization of lignin resource and the upgrading of biomass-derived chemicals.

Facile and controllable preparation of nanocrystalline ZSM-5 and Ag/ZSM-5 zeolite with enhanced performance of adsorptive desulfurization from fuel

Yonghou Xiao,Jiahui Fu,Heyang Zhu,Qidong Zhao,Liang Zhou

The diffusion limitation owing to the long and narrow pore structure in traditional ZSM-5 zeolite could restrain the adsorptive desulfurization performance towards thiophene sulfur compounds from fuels. Herein, ZSM-5 zeolite nanocrystals were successfully fabricated using steam-assisted gel crystallization strategy to control the size of zeolite particles within 70 ∼ 160 nm. Compared to traditional micron ZSM-5, ZSM-5 zeolite nanocrystals could effectively reduce the diffusion pathway, enlarge the specific surface area, and increase exposure of adsorption sites, which could enhance the desulfurization performance. ZSM-5 nanocrystals with a mole ratio SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 of 200 exhibited a satisfactory desulfurization efficiency, and the breakthrough capacity attained 0.0509 mmol S/g adsorbent. After ZSM-5 nanocrystals were ion-exchanged with NH 4 + and Ag + , both mesoporous characteristics and the Lewis acid (L-acid) sites were enhanced, which promoted the adsorption desulfurization performance. Furthermore, nanocrystalline ZSM-5 and Ag/ZSM-5 also exhibited acceptable regeneration performance. This study is expected to provide an effective strategy and a facile method to prepare nanocrystalline ZSM-5 based adsorbents for the development of efficient desulfurization materials.

Direct Conversion of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to Furanic Diether by Copper-Loaded Hierarchically Structured ZSM-5 Catalyst in a Fixed-Bed Reactor

Hualei Hu,Tingting Xue,Zhenxin Zhang,Jiang Gan,Liangqi Chen,Jian Zhang,Fengzuo Qu,Weijie Cai,Lei Wang

Graphical Bifunctional catalyst : The highly-efficient conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)furan (BEMF) was achieved by using the copper-loaded hierarchically structured ZSM-5 (Cu/HSZ) catalysts in the continuous fixed-bed reactor. The highly-efficient conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)furan (BEMF) was achieved over the copper-loaded hierarchically structured ZSM-5 (Cu/HSZ) catalysts in the continuous fixed-bed reactor. The main reaction path for BEMF synthesis on the Cu/HSZ catalysts was confirmed as following: HMF was firstly hydrogenated to BHMF intermediates over metal sites and then the formed BHMF was etherified by acid sites. Benefiting from the ammonia evaporation (AE) method promoted the dispersion of copper and reduced the acidity, the Cu/HSZ-AE catalyst exhibited more excellent BEMF yield and stability than the catalyst prepared by conventional incipient-wetness impregnation (Cu/HSZ-IW). Indeed, the inactivation of Cu/HSZ-IW catalyst was mainly attributed to the deactivation of copper by carbon species deposition.

Efficient biotransformation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid by a new whole-cell biocatalyst Pseudomonas aeruginosa PC-1

Xin Pan,Sihua Wu,Deshan Yao,Lian Liu,Lina Zhang,Zixuan Yao,Yan Pan,Siyuan Chang,Bingfeng Li

5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA) is a significant added-value intermediate derivatized from the bio-based platform chemical 5-hydroxymethylfurfuraldehyde (HMF). In the HMFCA biosynthesis process, the catalytic performance of the biocatalyst always decreases due to the presence of HMF toxicity, which is not conducive to achieving high product accumulation. Herein, we successfully obtained a new whole-cell biocatalyst from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PC-1, which was first reported to produce HMFCA from HMF. After optimization, 90.1% yield of HMFCA was attained within 6 h using a 100 mM substrate. Importantly, a much lower cell dosage was needed in the process. In order to achieve higher HMFCA accumulation, a fed-batch strategy was developed by using the growing cells from P. aeruginosa PC-1. Consequently, a total concentration of 721 mM HMFCA was obtained from 800 mM HMF within 58 h after 8 cycles of fed-batch, which is the highest concentration to date. The efficient HMFCA production made P. aeruginosa PC-1 a promising whole-cell biocatalyst for selective, large scale biotransformation of HMF.

WS2/Bi/BiOBr Nanostructures for Photoelectrochemical Sensing of 5-Formyluracil-2′-deoxyuridine-5′-triphosphate through Hemin/G-Quadruplex Double Signal Amplification

Qian Wang,Huanshun Yin,Jia Ding,Yunlei Zhou,Shiyun Ai

5-Formyluracil (5fU) is considered an important epigenetic modification agent involved in gene regulation, cell differentiation, and development. 5fU exists in many cells and tissues but is highly similar to the structure of 5-formylcytosine (5fC) and is less abundant in genome. Therefore, the development of a rapid, sensitive, and highly selective method to detect 5fU is desired. In this study, a photoelectrochemical biosensor based on WS2/Bi/BiOBr nanocomposites, black TiO2 (b-TiO2), and hemin/G-quadruplex was described, which was found to be highly sensitive and selective for 5-formyluracil-2′-deoxyuridine-5′-triphosphate (5fdUTP) detection. WS2/Bi/BiOBr was first employed as a photosensitive material, and 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid (DABA) was adopted as a 5fdUTP recognition and capture reagent, where DABA was captured by polyethylene polyamine through covalent reaction to form a stable amid bond. Then, a benzimidazole bond was formed between DABA and −CHO of 5fdUTP, and 5fdUTP was selectively captured on the electrode. Using b-TiO2 as a cross-linker, a guanine-rich ssDNA sequence was further immobilized on the electrode surface by covalent reaction with the 5fdUTP phosphate group. With the assistance of K+ and hemin, the hemin/G-quadruplex structure was formed on the electrode. The hemin molecules in the structure of hemin/G-quadruplex obviously enhanced the PEC response of the biosensor for detecting 5fdUTP, with a linear range of 0.005–500 nM and a detection limit of 1.53 pM (S/N = 3). In addition, this method exhibits optimistic selectivity. The precision and accuracy of this method were evaluated by studying the content of 5fdUTP in genome DNA of crop tissues with standard addition recovery experiments.

Hierarchically porous AlPO-5-based microspheres as heterogeneous catalysts for the synthesis of 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles via [3+2] cycloaddition

Dan Kong,Yanyan Liu,Juan Zhang,Hongbian Li,Xiangyu Wang,Guangyu Liu,Baojun Li,Zheng Xu

The research on the heterogeneous catalytic synthesis of tetrazoles has attracted great attention. In this paper, a tungsten atom-containing AlPO-5 microporous molecular sieve (termed as WAlPO-5) was designed and synthesized by the incorporation of tungsten atoms into the AlPO-5 skeleton with triethylamine as a structure template from pseudoboehmite, H3PO4 and tungstophosphoric acid. The incorporation of tungsten atoms into the AlPO-5 skeleton has been demonstrated by systematic characterizations. WAlPO-5 can be used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles by [3+2] cycloaddition from nitriles and sodium azide. As a novel heterogeneous catalyst, WAlPO-5 exhibits a high catalytic activity, a superior cycling stability and an excellent substrate applicability. The significant advantages of WAlPO-5, such as the simple procedure and the mild reaction conditions and as an alternative to those corrosive, hazardous and polluting homogeneous catalysts, warrant its potential application in industrial processes.

High-efficiency synthesis of 5‑ethoxymethylfurfural from biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and sugars catalyzed by magnetically recoverable hydrogen sulfate ionic liquid

Niakan Mahsa,Qian Chao,Zhou Shaodong

The conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and carbohydrates to 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) is an attractive biomass transformation owing to the potential application of the resulting product as a fuel additive. In this work, the imidazolium hydrogen sulfate ionic liquid was grafted on the surface of silica-coated iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles using cyanuric chloride as linker, and such a magnetically separable solid acid catalyst is referred to as HSO 4 /SMNPs. The catalytic activity of HSO 4 /SMNPs was evaluated for the etherification of biomass-derived HMF with ethanol and sequential dehydration/etherification of sugars to produce EMF. The impact of various reaction parameters was studied to achieve the optimal yield of EMF. HSO 4 /SMNPs provided EMF yields of 94.3%, 68.2%, and 53.3% from HMF, fructose, and inulin in ethanol, respectively, without the need for high boiling point co-solvents. Extraordinarily, the catalyst can be readily separated from the reaction mixture by applying a permanent magnet and reused for five times without substantial activity decrease.

Insight into the impact of the Al distribution in ZSM-5 zeolite on deep hydrogenation of phenanthrene over Pt/HZSM-5

Chuan-Hao Zhang,Qi Dong,Fei Wang,Ning-Yue Lu,Feng Yu,Bin-Bin Fan,Rui-Feng Li

Deep hydrogenation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into jet fuel is an important strategy for the upgrading of light cycle oil (LCO). Zeolite-supported metal catalysts have exhibited good catalytic performance for hydrogenation of PAHs under relatively mild conditions. However, the impacts of acidity variations in zeolite supports, arising from the differences in framework Al (Al F ) distribution on the catalytic behavior of zeolite-supported metal catalysts in the deep hydrogenation of PAHs remains unclear. Herein, two series of mesoporous ZSM-5 samples, that is ZSM-5-E- x and ZSM-5-F- x , with the differences in Al F distribution but similar Si/Al ratios, were prepared in the crystallization system with or without NaOH. The results of NH 3 -TPD, Pyridine-IR, N 2 adsorption-desorption and SEM reveal that two series of HZSM-5 samples have similar acid density and acid strength, textural properties, morphology and particle size. However, the results of XPS, 27 Al MAS NMR, 2,6-Ditert-butylpyridine-IR, catalytic cracking of 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene and the controlled reactions as well as DFT calculation indicate that the higher enrichment degree of Al F on the external surface and the suitable arrangement mode of Al F in ten-membered ring (10-MR) of HZSM-5-F- x compared to HZSM-5-E- x in case of the similar Si/Al ratios, result in Pt/HZSM-5-F- x exhibiting remarkably-improved deep hydrogenation performance of phenanthrene (PHE) compared to Pt/HZSM-5-E- x . Particularly, the selectivity to perhydrophenanthrene (PHP) over Pt/HZSM-5-F-50 can reach above 99.0% at a conversion of PHE (>99.0%). Furthermore, Pt/HZSM-5-F-50 exhibits well reusability. This work helps to clarify the impact of Al F distribution in ZSM-5 on catalytic hydrogenation performance for PAHs, providing valuable guidance for design and development of efficient catalysts for the hydrogenation of PAHs.

Mechanochemistry Unlocks direct cellulose conversion to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Fangyuan Zhou,Kezhen Jia,Hongke Zhang,Wanbin Zhu,Hongliang Wang

Develop AlCl 3 -assisted mechanochemical strategy enabling efficient one-pot conversion of recalcitrant cellulose to HMF. • Synergistic interplay between Lewis acidity and mechanical stress disrupts H-bonding networks and lowers crystallinity, markedly enhancing the chemical reactivity of cellulose. • Optimization of the Brønsted/Lewis acid balance by controlled HCl addition achieves a high HMF yield of 62.8% from mechanochemically pretreated cellulose. • This green and scalable approach can be broadly extended to diverse lignocellulosic biomass wastes, including waste paper, corncob residue, bamboo powder, and corn straw, to efficiently produce HMF. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a pivotal bio-based platform chemical, yet its direct production from inexpensive and abundant cellulose remains challenging due to the intrinsic recalcitrance of cellulose and the competing degradation of intermediates and products under acidic conditions. Herein, we report an AlCl 3 -assisted mechanochemical strategy that couples catalytic Lewis acidity with ball-milling mechanical force to activate cellulosic feedstocks, enabling their efficient one-pot conversion to HMF. Detailed structural characterizations demonstrate that the synergistic interplay between AlCl 3 and mechanical stress disrupts the extensive hydrogen-bonding network and partially cleaves β-1,4-glycosidic linkages, leading to pronounced reductions in cellulose crystallinity and degree of polymerization and, consequently, markedly enhanced chemical reactivity. The resulting mechanochemically pretreated cellulose (BMM-AlCl 3 ) was directly converted into HMF without additional catalysts during the reaction step, as the Al species introduced during pretreatment served as the catalytic sites, affording a yield of up to 46.8%. By further optimizing the Brønsted/Lewis acid balance through controlled HCl addition, the HMF yield increases to 62.8%. Importantly, this pretreatment strategy is broadly applicable to diverse lignocellulosic biomass resources, including waste paper pulp, corncob residue, bamboo powder, and corn straw, consistently delivering high HMF yields. This work establishes an efficient and potentially scalable mechanochemical route for the valorization of cellulose and lignocellulosic biomass into HMF.
