Background As triethylamine (TEA) is a critical indicators for evaluating seafood freshness to ensure edible safety and human health, developing a strategy for rapid, sensitive and on-site monitoring TEA possesses an important research significance. Results The novel strategy of constructing ratiometric fluorescent platform for TEA detection is proposed based on ternary nanocomposites. Red-emissive carbon dots (R-CDs) with large Stokes shift were firstly synthesized by using citric acid and neutral red as dual carbon sources while UiO-66-NH 2 were prepared by 2-aminoterephthalic acid and zirconium tetrachloride via solvothermal approach. After that, R-CDs and riboflavin (RF) self-assembled on the surface of UiO-66-NH 2 to form ternary nanocomposites (R-CDs@UiO-66-NH 2 @RF), displaying dual-response modes: ratiometric and visual detection of TEA. Under single-excitation at 370 nm, ternary nanocomposites exhibit two emission peaks at 426 and 530 nm which ascribes to R-CDs and RF, respectively. Third, UiO-66-NH 2 with large surface area brings R-CDs close proximity to RF, resulting in occurrence of FRET from RF to R-CDs. More interestingly, after the introduction of TEA, the emission intensity at 530 nm appears significant decrease due to photo-induced electron transfer while that at 426 nm nearly keeps the constant. Based on these phenomena, a ratiometric approach for detecting TEA has been proposed with the detection limit of 0.28 nM. Furthermore, intelligent visual sensing approach was also fabricated by combining test strips with smartphone-assisted RGB analysis, achieving on-site monitoring of TEA gas and real-time assessment of seafood freshness. Significance Our present ratiometric/intelligent sensing platform offers a convenient and alternative approach for food safety control.

For the photocatalytic system modified with transitional metals, an appropriate Schottky junction height is of crucial significance for efficiently promoting the transfer of photogenerated electrons and thus inhibiting the recombination of charge carriers. Hereinto, a nickel-cobalt bimetallic layered hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) lamina as transition layer was inserted between CdS and nitrogen-doped carbon-supported molybdenum carbide (MoC/NC) via a continuous two-step hydrothermal method, constructing a sandwich-structured MoC@LDH@CdS ternary composite photocatalyst. Thanks to such a meticulously designed nanoarchitecture of the as-obtained catalyst, the dual heterogeneous interface phases, CdS/NiCo-LDH and NiCo-LDH/MoC, are constructed on account of the crucial bridging role by NiCo-LDH. Therefore, not only a cascaded electron transfer channel is opened up following the path “CdS→NiCo-LDH→MoC”, but also the Schottky barrier of CdS/MoC is optimized, thus boosting the photo-electron transfer and suppressing the recombination of carriers. As a result, MoC@NiCo-LDH@CdS exhibits importantly promoted photocatalytic H 2 evolution performance, with a high rate of 44.77 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is a 13.3-fold and 1.39-fold over pure CdS and MoC@CdS, respectively. Moreover, the apparent quantum yield (AQY) reaches 3.01% at 420 nm. In addition, the photocatalytic durability of MoC@LDH@CdS is also greatly improved compared with the pristine CdS.

Rapid and reliable determination of rifampicin (RIF) is important for dose optimization and therapeutic drug monitoring during tuberculosis treatment. Herein, In 2 O 3 /CdS heterojunctions were fabricated through calcination followed by in situ CdS growth and employed as an efficient photoactive interface for photoelectrochemical RIF sensing. The In 2 O 3 /CdS heterojunction enhanced photoinduced charge separation and provided an amplified photocurrent background, while RIF induced a concentration-dependent photocurrent quenching response for signal-off PEC quantification. Under optimized conditions, the proposed sensor showed a linear response to RIF over the concentration range of 0.010-75 μM, with a detection limit of 1.45 nM (S/N = 3). The sensor exhibited satisfactory selectivity against common coexisting substances, as well as good repeatability and storage stability. Accurate RIF quantification was further achieved in spiked human serum, urine, and pharmaceutical capsule samples, affording recoveries of 97.73% and 103.49% with relative standard deviations below 4.1%. This work provides a sensitive and reliable PEC platform for RIF determination in complex biological and pharmaceutical matrices.

Carbon dots (CDs), known for their notable fluorescence, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendliness, hold substantial promise in versatile applications. However, existing one-pot strategies using biomass precursors predominantly yield blue-green emissive CDs, and achieving multicolor emission (especially red) remains challenging. In this work, four distinct fluorescent CDs (blue, green, yellow, and red) were synthesized via a one-pot solvothermal method using a synergistic natural/synthetic precursor system (Radix Saposhnikoviae and p-phenylenediamine). Systematic characterization revealed that the emission red shift (450 nm to 626 nm) is primarily governed by increased carbonization degree, as evidenced by the gradual enhancement of graphitic nitrogen content and sp2 domain ordering. The synthetic precursor (p-phenylenediamine) drives carbon core growth and graphitization, while the natural biomass (Radix Saposhnikoviae) facilitates multi-scale carbonization control, enabling color diversification in a single pot. By integrating the four CDs with silicone resin on a 395 nm UV chip, we fabricated a warm white LED with high-quality white light with CIE chromatic coordinates (0.36, 0.35) and correlated color temperature 4428 K, demonstrating their practical potential in solid-state lighting.

A series of TiO 2 -CdS composites were prepared at room temperature using a one-step precipitation method, and an appropriate loading ratio was determined. Compared with pure TiO 2 and CdS, the composites exhibited superior photocatalytic degradation performance in the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and the reduction of Cr(Ⅵ). The incorporation of an appropriate amount of TiO 2 effectively suppressed the agglomeration of CdS nanoparticles and enhanced interfacial electron transfer, thereby significantly improving photocatalytic efficiency. Furthermore, a metal ion-mediated redox synergistic system was successfully constructed, achieving efficiency breakthroughs in the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and ibuprofen (IBU), which exhibited negligible photocatalytic activity under conventional conditions. The influence of different heavy metal ions on the photocatalytic degradation performance of organic pollutants were discussed. This provides a robust theoretical basis for the removal and resource recovery of refractory organic compounds.

Heavy metal pollution is a globally environmental crisis as the demand for electronic products being steadily on the increase. In our work, a novel transition metal Sn-doping strategy has been proposed to reconstruct the valence band of CdS by s-p orbit hybridization. An easy and mild solvothermal method was employed to synthesize the Sn-doped CdS nanoparticles, in which Sn 2+ ions substitute Cd 2+ ions to occupy CdS lattice. This Sn-doping modification effectively narrows the bandgap and regulates the energy band structure of CdS. In this case, it has caused an extension of the visible light absorption range, an enhancement of photogenerated carrier separation efficiency, and an improvement of thermodynamic potential, as well as a photostability from photocorrosion. For the optimization effect of Sn doping, the 4 at% Sn-doped CdS sample has performed the highest efficiency of photocatalytic reduction Cr (VI) degradation, achieving 84.8% Cr (VI) removal within 10 min, as 1.3 times higher than that of bare CdS. This research establishes an experimental framework for the advancement of efficient and stable nano-photocatalysts, with implications for band engineering in metal dichalcogenide semiconductors.

Graphical An excellent 2D photocatalyst was synthesized by loading Au nanoparticles and CdS quantum dots on niobate nanosheets. This CdS/Au/HNb 3 O 8 photocatalyst not only increased the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate by 254 times compared with the pure niobate nanosheet, but also showed outstanding photocatalytic performance for oxidative self-coupling of benzylamine and degradation of organic dyes. Niobate nanosheets have aroused widespread interest in recent years for their prospects in catalysis. The exploration of 2D niobate catalysis with stable and efficient properties is still the focus in chemistry and materials science. Herein, the successful fabrication of 2D CdS/Au/HNb 3 O 8 catalyst is demonstrated which revealed efficient photocatalytic properties in H 2 evolution, oxidative self-coupling of amines to imines, and degradation of dyes. Especially the assembled architecture can give a rate of 5.85 mmol ⋅ g −1 ⋅ h −1 of photocatalytic H 2 evolution, an ∼254-fold enhancement, compared with bare HNb 3 O 8 nanosheets under identical conditions. In accordance with density functional theory (DFT) and X-ray adsorption fine structure (XAFS) analyses, the vast improvements are benefited from efficient migration and separation of charge carriers. Besides, the surface plasma resonance (SPR) effect of Au NPs enhances the light harvesting capacity and boosts the generation of hot electrons, efficiently improving the visible-light absorption.

This work successfully synthesized a series of ZnS/CdS photocatalysts (ZC) via one-step hydrothermal method, in which ZC-1 (Zn/Cd = 2:1) exhibited optimal photoreduction performances of hexavalent uranium (U(VI)). The experiments results demonstrated that the reaction rate constant of ZC-1 (k = 0.0174 min −1 ) was 4.49 and 23.51 times higher than those of pristine ZnS and CdS, respectively, confirming that the combination of ZnS and CdS was a feasible strategy for remarkably strengthening the activity of U(VI) photocatalytic reduction. Meanwhile, ZC-1 reached high removal efficiency of 80.18% with an initial U(VI) concentration as high as 180 mg/L, posing a considerable U(VI) extraction capacity of 1443.26 mg/g, which was larger than numerous photocatalysts. The wonderful performances of ZC-1 might be due to its well-dispersed morphology and optimized band structure, which not only provided rich active sites, but also endowed ZC-1 with enhanced capacity of visible light harvesting and photogenerated electron-hole separation. In addition, ZC-1 demonstrated exceptional anti-interference ability and outstanding photocatalytic stability, maintaining a high U(VI) photoreduction rate of over 88% after 5 cycles. The mechanistic study showed that the effective extraction efficiency of U(VI) for ZC-1 was ascribed to the “cooperative capture and directional reduction” mechanism: The built-in electric field concentrated reductive electrons at catalytic active sites to facilitate the U(VI) reduction process, while the well-dispersed of ZC-1 synergistically enhanced UO 2 2+ capture. This study established a novel design strategy and fundamental theoretical framework for developing efficient and stable photocatalytic materials to deal with U(VI) pollution.

Formation of CdS nanocrystals in the classic approach (with octadecene (ODE) as the solvent and elemental sulfur and cadmium carboxylate as the precursors) was found to be kinetically dependent on reduction of elemental sulfur by ODE, which possessed a critical temperature (∼180 °C). After elemental sulfur was activated by ODE, the formation reaction of CdS followed closely. 2-tetradecylthiophene from the activation of S by ODE and fatty acids from the formation reaction of CdS were found to be the only soluble side products. The overall reaction stoichiometry further suggested that oxidation of each ODE molecule generated two molecules of H2S, which in turn reacted with two molecules of cadmium carboxylate molecules to yield two CdS molecular units and four molecules of fatty acids. In comparison to alkanes, octadecene was found to be substantially more active as a reductant for elemental sulfur. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of quantitative correlation between chemical reactions and formation of high-quality nanocrystals under synthetic conditions. To demonstrate the importance of such discovery, we designed two independent and simplified synthetic approaches for synthesis of CdS nanocrystals. One approach with its reaction temperature at the critical temperature of S activation (180 °C) used the same reactant composition as the classic approach but without any hot injection. The other approach performed at an ordinary laboratory temperature (≤100 °C) and in a common organic solvent (toluene) was achieved by addition of fatty amine as activation reagent of elemental sulfur.

Effective and affordable photocatalysts play an important role in the cost reduction of solar hydrogen production through photocatalytic water splitting. In this research, a Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ modified carbon hydrogen evolution cocatalyst (ZnNi-C) were synthesized and immobilized onto the surface of CdS (CdS@ZnNi-C) for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). The preparation used an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium (EDTA)-assisted method. The hydrogen evolution rate and apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) at 420 nm for an optimized CdS@ZnNi-C photocatalyst are15.7 mmol/h/g and 31.4 %, respectively. The rate is 2.4 times and 3.7 times greater than those of Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ modified carbon cocatalysts (Zn-C) and (Ni-C) on CdS (CdS@Zn-C) and (CdS@Ni-C), respectively. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the elevated catalytic performance of CdS@ZnNi-C is due to the co-anchored Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ in carbon layers that lead to a favorable Gibbs free energy (ΔG H *) for hydrogen evolution. This approach is valuable for the design of stable and efficient photocatalysts for renewable hydrogen production.

In recent years, there have been many studies on photocatalytic water splitting, but there are still few high-efficiency photocatalysts for photocatalytic seawater splitting. In this study, a series of hollow Co sulphide-supported CdS catalyst (H–CoS/CdS) composite photocatalysts were prepared by loading CdS onto the surface of H–CoS, which can be used for efficient H 2 production in pure water and simulated seawater. The heterojunction H–CoS/CdS exhibited H 2 production of 572.4 μmol g −1 (4 h) from simulated seawater, which is 97.7 and 2.96 times those of H–CoS and CdS, respectively. The h-CoS cocatalyst extended the light absorption range of CdS, improved the chemical stability, and significantly enhances the charge separation efficiency. This study provides guidance for the reasonable design of a photocatalytic seawater-based H 2 production catalyst with high efficiency and low cost.

Solar-powered photocatalytic hydrogen production from water using semiconductors provides an eco-friendly and promising approach for converting solar energy into hydrogen fuel. Bulk semiconductors generally suffer from certain limitations, such as poor visible-light utilization, rapid recombination of charge carriers, and low catalytic capability. The key challenge is to develop visible-light-driven heterojunction photocatalysts that are stable and highly active during the water splitting process. Here, we demonstrate the integration of one-dimensional (1D) CdS nanorods with two-dimensional (2D) 1T-phase dominated WS 2 nanosheets for constructing mixed-dimensional heterojunctions for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The resulting 1D CdS/2D WS 2 nanoheterojunction exhibited an ultrahigh hydrogen-evolution activity of ∼70 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 that was visible to the naked eye, as well as long-term stability under visible light illumination. The results reveal that the synergy of hybrid nanoarchitectures and intimate interfacial contact between the 1D CdS nanorods and 1T-phase dominated 2D WS 2 nanosheets facilitates charge carrier transport, which is beneficial for achieving superior hydrogen evolution.
