Co-precipitation behaviour of titanium-containing silicate solution

Hui-Hong Lü,Min-Zhi Wu,Zheng-Li Zhang,Xing-Rong Wu,Liao-Sha Li,Zhi-Fang Gao

The co-precipitation behaviour of a simulated Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 –TiOSO 4 –Na 2 SiO 3 solution that imitated the lixivium of Ti-bearing blast furnace slag (Ti-slag) leached by sulphuric acid was investigated in this study. Various chemical analyses were employed to study the selective precipitation of multiple target components. Based on the high-added-value applications of Ti-slag, a new method was developed to prepare aluminium titanate composites from titanium-containing silicates. The findings demonstrate that the onsets of Ti and Al precipitation occur at pH values of 3.5 and 5.0, respectively, followed by Si precipitation. The particle sizes of the co-precipitates were greatly influenced by the precipitants, pH and the initial Al/Ti mole ratio. The results also show that the precipitation ratio of Ti, Al and Si generally increases with the pH and temperature, regardless of the Al/Ti mole ratio. The Si-O-Al, Ti-O-Al, and Ti-O-Si bonds that were formed were dependent on the pH and the initial Al/Ti mole ratio. There was a synthesis path for β -Al 2 TiO 5 (AT) from the solid-state reaction between rutile and α -Al 2 O 3 at 1362.5°C. The AT composites were successfully prepared by sintering the co-precipitates at 1450°C, which exhibited good thermal stability as estimated by the XRD measurements of the sample annealed at 1200°C for 4 hours.

Synthesis and microstructure of Co/Ni: MgGa2O4 nanoparticles

Li Nannan,Liu Jian,Duan Xiulan,Yu Fapeng,Jiang Huaidong

This report discusses the preparation and microstructure of Co/Ni co-doped MgGa 2 O 4 nanoparticles. The nanoparticles with the size of 20–55 nm were synthesized by sol-gel method. The phase and crystallinity were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern. The particle size was estimated according to XRD data and transmission electron microscopy. The electronic structure was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS studies showed that Ga 3+ ions possess tetrahedral and octahedral sites of spinel structure and the inverse degree (two times of the fraction of tetrahedral Ga 3+ ions) has increased with the increase of the doping concentration of Co 2+ and Ni 2+ ions. For Co/Ni co-doped MgGa 2 O 4 , two broad absorption bands of 350~500 and 550~700 nm were observed in the absorption spectra. The broad band at 350~500 nm was assigned to the combination of the absorption of octahedral Co 2+ and Ni 2+ ions, whereas the absorption band at 550~700 nm is mainly due to tetrahedrally coordinated Co 2+ ions and octahedrally coordinated Ni 2+ ions.

Three–dimensional nitrogen-doped porous carbon modified by Co/Ni nanoparticles derived from bimetallic Co/Ni–MOF for enhanced electromagnetic wave absorption

Jiyuan Cong,Yusha Lan,Jianglin Hu,Gang Chen,Chengjun Dong,Hongtao Guan

The nitrogen–doped porous carbon (NPC) foam composites modified by magnetic nanoparticles exhibit lightweight properties and excellent impedance matching, making them highly valuable for research and applications in electromagnetic wave shielding and absorption. The present work focuses on binary Co/Ni–MOF as the subject, combining it with carbon foam by adjusting the Co/Ni ratio to obtain various MOF derivatives, thereby exploring their electromagnetic properties. The composite CoNi-2/NPC, yielded through calcinating the precursor CoNi-2/HMT (Co: Ni = 1: 1) at 500 °C, demonstrates excellent wave absorption performance with a low filler content of 15 wt%, achieving a minimum reflection loss of –52.7 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 7.36 GHz. The radar cross section (RCS) simulation reveals an RCS reduction of 22.8 dB m² for CoNi-2/NPC. The excellent electromagnetic absorption can be ascribed to the increased interfacial polarization, the improved impedance matching, and defect-induced polarization loss. The present research offers a novel perspective for the design of high–performance electromagnetic absorbing materials featuring a broad absorption bandwidth through controlling their magnetic components.

Fabrication of compact poly(methyl methacrylate-co-butyl methacrylate-co-acrylic acid) microcapsules for electrophoretic displays by using emulsion droplets as templates

Yu Fengyang,Fang Yi,Wang Jingjing,Xu Yanling,Shi Jun

Microcapsules with smooth, transparent, and compact walls used for electrophoretic displays (EPDs) were prepared and characterized. The approach to fabricate EPD microcapsules was based on templating an oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by monodispersed poly(methyl methacrylate- co -butyl methacrylate- co -acrylic acid) latex particles synthesized by dispersion polymerization. The individual latex particles were then transformed into robust capsule walls by successively using solvent swelling, covalent cross-linking, and sintering. The diameter of the emulsion droplets was controlled by changing the concentration of latex in the emulsion, and the thickness of the wall changed according to the diameter of the latex particles. These microcapsules for EPDs were applied successfully in preparing a clock display panel controlled by a single-chip microprocessor operated at a low direct current voltage, demonstrating that these microcapsules can be used in EPDs.

Facile synthesis of C-decorated Fe, N co-doped TiO2 with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity by a novel co-precursor method

Hualin Jiang,Jun Liu,Menglin Li,Lei Tian,Gongsheng Ding,Pinghua Chen,Xubiao Luo

Lattice-doping and surface decoration are prospective routes to improve the visible-light photocatalytic ability of TiO 2 , but the two techniques are difficult to combine into one preparation process because they are usually conducted under different conditions, which limits the efficiency of TiO 2 modification. In this study, TiO 2 was successfully modified by simultaneous lattice-doping and surface decoration, and the visible-light photocatalytic capacity was largely improved. Upon comparing the method reported here with previous ones, the most significant difference is that Fe(II)-phenanthroline was first used as the co-precursor of the introduced elements of C, N, and Fe. These three elements were simultaneously introduced to TiO 2 at high levels by this co-precursor method. The as-synthesized photocatalysts were systemically investigated and analyzed by several characterization methods such as XRD , FT-IR, XPS , Raman spectroscopy , EPR , UV-Vis DRS, photoluminescence spectra, photocurrent , electrochemical impedance spectra, TEM, and HRTEM . The photocatalytic degradation of 4-NP under visible-light irradiation was used to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts. Based on the experimental data, a probable mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation by the photocatalysts is proposed. This is a novel method of using one source to simultaneously introduce metal and non-metal elements to TiO 2 at high levels, which may provide a new way to prepare highly effective TiO 2 photocatalysts.

Synthesis and characterization of Al and Ti co-doped polycarbosilane for Si(Al,Ti)CO and Si(Al,Ti)C ceramic fibers

Xiaohong Li,Cai Ye,Jianjun Chen,Meijing Wang

A novel aluminum and titanium co-doped polycarbosilane (PATCS) was synthesized by the reaction of liquid polycarbosilane (LPCS), Al(acac) 3 , and Ti(Cp) 2 Cl 2 . The thermal polymerization mechanism of the PATCS was that Si-H bonds in LPCS reacted with C=C/Ti-Cl bonds in Ti(Cp) 2 Cl 2 and Al-O-C/Al-O=C groups in Al(acac) 3 to form Si-Ti, Si-C-C, Si-O-Al bonds. The TG-DSC results showed that the synthesized PATCS exhibited greater stability and a higher ceramic yield compared to PACS. A novel type Si(Al,Ti)CO ceramic fibers (AT-11) with tensile strength (2222 MPa) were obtained by melt-spining, curing, pyrolysis of the synthesized PATCS. After sintering, the AT-13 showed excellent electromagnetic wave absorption. When the thickness reached 2.3 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) vaule and the EAB were -52.02 dB and 5.12 GHz (RL < −10 dB, 10.64-15.76 GHz), respectively. While the AT-18 fibers showed higher high-temperature creep resistance in the range of 1300∼1700 °C than those of Si(Al)C ceramic fibers.

Effects of preparation methods and Cu/Co ratio on the catalytic performance of Cu–Co catalysts for ultra-low concentration methane combustion

Zezhuang Wang,Yue Lyu,Baihe Guo,Yuchuan Feng,Haiyu Liu,Yan Jin,Juntian Niu

The efficient removal of ultra-low concentration methane from sources like coal mine ventilation air is crucial for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. This study systematically investigates the effects of synthesis methods (impregnation, combustion, sol-gel, and co-precipitation) and Cu/Co ratios on the catalytic performance of Cu-Co/CeO 2 catalysts for ultra-low concentration methane combustion. Characterization results demonstrate the structural advantages of the optimal catalyst. XRD patterns confirm the successful formation of a CuCo 2 O 4 spinel phase. SEM images show a uniform morphology with minimal agglomeration. XPS analysis further reveals the coexistence of Cu 2+ /Cu + and Co 3+ /Co 2+ redox couples accompanied by abundant adsorbed oxygen species. Experiments demonstrate that the 1Cu-4Co/CeO 2 catalyst prepared by co-precipitation exhibits optimal low-temperature activity, with T 10 and T 90 values of 330 °C and 566 °C, respectively. Stability evaluations over 20 h at 500 °C show minimal activity decay, with the catalyst retaining 94.2% of its initial conversion. The superior performance is attributed to the synergistic redox interaction between Cu and Co, optimized surface oxygen mobility, and robust structural stability. This work provides an effective strategy for designing non-noble metal catalysts for ultra-low concentration methane purification.

Scalable Electrospinning-Pyrolysis Fabrication of MOF-Derived Beaded Co/Co-Nx-C Nanofibers for High-Power and Long-Life Zn-Air Batteries

Liyuan Guo,Nengneng Xu,Tuo Lu,Qin Cao,Momo Safari,Jong Min Kim,Yongxia Wang,Jinli Qiao

The rational design of bifunctional electrocatalysts with abundant active sites and efficient charge/mass transport is crucial for Zn-air batteries. Here, we report a scalable electrospinning strategy to fabricate Co/N-doped carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with a beaded architecture derived from ZIF-67@PAN precursors. By precisely tuning the ZIF-67 loading, the intercluster spacing along the fibers can be controlled, yielding well-dispersed Co nanoparticles and Co-N x moieties after pyrolysis. Critically, vertically stacked nanofibrous membranes enable scalable manufacturing. The optimized Co/Co-N x -C@CNF-1.5 exhibits superior bifunctional activity (Δ E = 0.815 V), benefiting from balanced active-site density, rapid electron transport, and hierarchical porosity. Density functional theory calculations further reveal the microscopic origin that an appropriate spacing enables moderate electronic coupling between adjacent Co-based active sites, thereby optimizing the adsorption energetics of oxygen intermediates and facilitating ORR/OER kinetics. As an air cathode, the liquid Zn-air battery delivers a peak power density of 406.5 mW cm −2 , an energy density of 976 Wh kg −1 , and a long cycling stability of ∼2143 h. The quasi-solid-state device also shows high power output, stable operation, and excellent flexibility. This work demonstrates a general electrospinning-pyrolysis approach to engineer MOF-derived self-supporting electrodes, bridging high-performance electrocatalysis with practical energy storage applications.

Production of Self-Supporting Hollow Carbon Nanofiber Membranes with Co/Co2P Heterojunctions via Continuous Coaxial Co-Spinning for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Ruidan Duan,Jianhang Ding,Jiawei Fan,Linzhou Zhuang

To address mass transport limitations in carbon nanofiber membrane electrodes for overall water splitting, a self-supporting nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanofiber membrane embedded with Co/Co2P heterojunctions (Co/Co2P-NCNFs-H) was fabricated via continuous coaxial electrospinning. The architecture features uniform hollow channels (200–250 nm diameter, 30–50 nm wall thickness) and a high specific surface area (254 m2g−1), as confirmed by SEM, TEM, and BET analysis. The Co/Co2P heterojunction was uniformly dispersed on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanofibers through electrospinning, leverages interfacial electronic synergy to accelerate charge transfer and optimize the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Electrochemical tests demonstrated exceptional catalytic activity, achieving current densities of 100 mA cm−2at ultralow overpotentials of 405.6 mV (OER) and 247.9 mV (HER) in 1.0 M KOH—surpassing most reported transition metal catalysts for both half-reactions. Moreover, the electrode exhibited robust long-term stability, maintaining performance for nearly 20 h at 0.6 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) (OER) and over 250 h at −1.5 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) (HER), attributed to the mechanical integrity of the hollow architecture and strong metal–carbon interactions. This work demonstrates that integrating hollow nanostructures (enhanced mass transport) and heterojunction engineering (optimized electronic configurations) creates a scalable strategy for designing efficient bifunctional catalysts, offering significant promise for sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis.

Co, Fe co-doped g-C3N4 composites as peroxymonosulfate activators under visible light irradiation for levofloxacin degradation: Characterization, performance and synergy mechanism

Pengyao Guo,Xiaomin Hu

To improve the degradation efficiency of g-C 3 N 4 (CN), transition metal elements (Fe and Co) were doped into CN. A novel Co, Fe co-doped CN (Co/Fe-CN) photocatalysts with small size and irregular flake structure were successfully prepared by thermal polymerization of melamine . Co/Fe-CN has a large specific surface area (55.76 m 2 /g), which provides more adsorption sites and reaction sites for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Good visible light response performance (474 nm) and suitable band gap (2.83 eV) ensure that it could be excited by visible light. The active species of • O 2 - , 1 O 2 , • OH and SO 4 •- could be stably produced in Co/Fe-CN/Vis/PMS system with appropriate redox potential . Meanwhile, Co and Fe elements doped in CN also could effectively activate PMS and promote the generation of active species. Besides, the continuous generation of photogenerated electrons promoted the cycling of Co 3+ /Co 2+ and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ , and further enhanced the degradation efficiency of Co/Fe-CN/Vis/PMS towards Levofloxacin (LVFX). LVFX could be rapidly removed, reaching 92.1% within 50 min under visible light illumination, and the kinetic rate constant of LVFX was 0.0638 min -1 . The quenching experiments verified that the 1 O 2 was the main active species in the reaction process. The cycling experiments revealed that the Co/Fe-CN/Vis/PMS system had favorable stability and applicability. This work provides a simple preparation method to fabricate bimetallic co-doped CN for the enhancement of degradation rate in the Photocatalyst/Vis/PMS system.

Synergistic Effect of Co(III) and Co(II) in a 3D Structured Co3O4/Carbon Felt Electrode for Enhanced Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction Reaction

Wenyang Fu,Xuedong Du,Pei Su,Qizhan Zhang,Minghua Zhou

As nitrate contamination causes serious environmental problems, it is necessary to develop stable and efficient electrocatalysts for efficient electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (ENRR). Here, a nonprecious Co3O4/carbon felt (CF) electrode with a 3D structure was prepared by integrating electrodeposition with calcination methods. This 3D structured Co3O4/CF electrode exhibits a high-rate constant of 1.18 × 10–4 s–1 cm–2 for the ENRR, surpassing other Co3O4 electrodes in previous literature. Moreover, it also has an excellent stability with a decrease of 6.4% after 10 cycles. Density functional theory calculations, electron spin resonance analysis, and cyclic voltammetry were performed to study the mechanism of the ENRR on the Co3O4/CF electrode, proving that atomic H* (indirect pathway) plays a prominent role in NO3– reduction and clarifying the synergistic effect of Co(III) and Co(II) in the Co(II)–Co(III)–Co(II) redox cycle for the ENRR: Co(III) prefers the adsorption of NO3– and Co(II) favors the production of H*. Based on this synergy, a relatively large amounts of Co(II) on the surface of the Co3O4/CF electrode (1.3 Co(II)/Co(III) ratio) was maintained by controlling the temperature of calcination to 200 °C with a lower energy barrier of H* formation of 0.46 eV than other ratios, which is beneficial for forming H* and enhancing the performance of the ENRR. Thus, this study suggests that building 3D structure and optimizing Co(II)/Co(III) ratio are important for designing efficient Co3O4 electrocatalyst for ENRR.

Controllable synthesis of a hollow core-shell Co-Fe layered double hydroxide derived from Co-MOF and its application in capacitive deionization

Zhe Li,Shudi Mao,Ying Yang,Zhuo Sun,Ran Zhao

Capacitive deionization (CDI) is considered one of the most promising desalination technologies for obtaining fresh water from saline water. In this work, we synthesized a hollow core–shell Co-MOF@Fe/Co-LDH (Co-Fe-LDH) material by developing a strategy to simultaneously grow Co/Fe-LDH on the surface of a Co-MOF precursor in situ. Owing to the increase in the specific surface area of the hollow structure and the Faradaic process of a layered double hydroxide (LDH), the Co-Fe-LDH material exhibits high electrical double layer (EDL) capacitance and pseudocapacitance, which significantly improves the salt adsorption of the material during CDI (34.2 mg/g in a 600 mg/L NaCl solution at 1.2 V). The adsorption for NaCl in this work is approximately 2.5 times the maximum salt adsorption capacity (SAC) of LDH materials applied in nonmembrane CDI (NMCDI). This work may provide a promising model for the application of hollow LDH materials that exhibit pseudocapacitance in CDI.
