Carbon dioxide electroreduction reaction (CO 2 RR) offers a pathway to convert CO 2 into valuable multicarbon products (C 2+ ), potential clean energy, and chemical vectors, using renewable electricity. Copper catalysts are, so far, the most selective in this process, but still face challenges such as high overpotentials and insufficient selectivity and stability when used alone. One strategy to tackle these is the use of Cu-based tandem structures, which incorporate tailored reaction sites to drive a segment of the CO 2 RR reaction, in a more favorable way, within the same electrode. Recent examples have shown how Cu-tandem catalysts can lead to voltage savings and improvements in selectivity. This review analyses various Cu-based tandem catalysts, focusing on alloys, heterostructures (especially highlighting the role of polymer coatings in achieving tandem effects through environmental control), and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). It covers synthetic strategies to achieve tandem-enabling configurations and their suggested impact on reaction mechanisms and performance improvement toward C 2+ electrosynthesis. The review concludes by offering a roadmap toward the design of more efficient Cu-based tandem electrodes for CO₂RR and beyond.

The development of efficient disinfection techniques that can persistently eradicate viruses or disrupt their transmission is of paramount significance for curbing the spread of pandemics. Existing disinfection techniques commonly suffer from secondary pollution and difficulty in achieving continuous disinfection while ensuring safety and effectiveness, particularly in crowded environments. In this study, we adopted ozone synergistic catalytic oxidation (OSCO) technology for the highly efficient disinfection of bacteria and viruses. The OSCO route is based on the catalytic decomposition of ozone into active radicals in the presence of an optimized rod-like Cu/MnO 2 catalyst. The high catalytic activity of the Cu-doped MnO 2 catalyst can be attributed to the presence of numerous oxygen vacancies, which facilitate the catalytic decomposition of ozone into active radicals. This method serves multiple purposes, including the eradication of bacteria and viruses as well as the prompt decomposition of ozone to prevent any potential leakage. A disinfection rate of 99.9 % for both Staphylococcus albicans and H1N1 viruses was achieved within 20 min. The catalyst also demonstrated exceptional efficiency in degrading residual ozone, achieving a high removal rate of 99.99 % within 25 min, thus assuring safe disinfection. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further supported that Cu doping induced lattice defects in MnO 2 , promoting the formation of interfacial oxygen vacancies and in turn favoring the catalytic oxidation process. The current OSCO technology offers a highly efficient and secure disinfection method with a wide range of potential applications in various fields.

The electrochemical nitrate reduction (NO3RR) offers a promising alternative synthetic route for sustainable ammonia (NH3) production, effectively removing nitrate (NO3−) from wastewater under mild operating conditions. Copper (Cu) nanomaterials are considered to be effective catalysts for NO3RR. This study reports the simple synthesis of a porous Cu nanosheets via a two-step reaction, which are obtained from the electrochemical reduction of CuO nanosheets. The porous Cu nanosheets exhibit a high selectivity and activity for NO3RR, achieving an NH3 yield of 42.5 mg·h-1·mgcat-1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 97% for the conversion from NO3− to NH3 at the potential of −0.7 V (vs. RHE). The prominent electrocatalytic activity can be ascribed to porous architecture, high surface area, and low mass transfer resistance.

Sulfur containing amino acids play an important role in human physiology, and different levels of amino acids in organisms can cause serious health problems. Herein, we have developed a core-shell Cu@Au nanoparticles (Cu@AuNPs)-based powerful colorimetric sensing array for differentiation of containing amino acid. The sensors consist of two different concentrations of iodides (1.5 μM KI and 0.5 μM NaI) as sensor receptors and Cu@AuNPs as signal readout. With the amino acids, iodide can easily get access to the Cu@AuNP surface, inducing a visual color variation (gray→red) of the Cu@AuNP solution by means of changing the Cu@AuNP clusters to separated, spherical-like, and larger ones. While without the target amino acids, various amino acids show differential binding interactions toward Cu@AuNPs via gold-sulfur bonds. So, the transformation is blocked to diverse degrees due to a competition adsorption between amino acids and iodides to the Cu@AuNPs. Consequently, varying levels of Cu@AuNP transformation are relevant with different amino acids and iodides, generating distinct colorimetric reaction modes, which are characteristic for each amino acid and can be quantitatively detected by linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Four target amino acids have been successfully identified at the 20 nM level. Additionally, the sensing system shows outstanding potential for analysis of complex samples.

Printed flexible heaters (FHs) with excellent heating performance and thermal stability are quite desirable for the development of portable thermotherapy platform. Herein, the facile screen-printing technology is used to fabricate the highly oxidation-resistant Cu @ Ni rose-stem nanowires (RSNWs) - based low-cost scalable FHs. The Cu @ Ni RSNWs possess low sheet resistance of 1.9 Ω sq −1 after low temperature sintering (90 °C). The FHs not only exhibit great oxidation resistance (almost no change at 180 °C for 30 min), but also maintain the great conductivity (Δ R / R 0 < 0.3) even after being exposed to ambient atmosphere for 60 days. Furthermore, the FHs exhibit great heating performance with the saturation temperature of 172.8 °C under 6 V, and can keep stable heating cycles for 5500 s under both parameters of the stepwise-rising voltage from 2 to 6 V and consistent load-on voltage of 6 V. In addition, the heaters array can greatly shorten the time of raising the temperature of the blood bag from 5 to 20 °C. The outstanding heating performance of the FHs provides great chances for portable variable-area flexible heating platform in the field of multiduty thermal management.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on heterogeneous catalytic activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) have been becoming alternatives to conventional wastewater treatment technologies to directly degrade chemical contaminants. To build dual/multi redox cycles of different metal ions may be an effective means for better PMS activation. Herein, this study designed Mn 3 O 4 /CuBi 2 O 4 with dual redox cycles of Mn(III)/Mn(IV) and Cu(I)/Cu(II) to activate PMS for efficiently decomposing and mineralizing diclofenac sodium (DCF). Under optimal reaction conditions, DCF (50 mg/L) was degraded totally within 10 min, and TOC removal rate reached up to 74.3%. The possible mechanism of PMS activation by Mn 3 O 4 /CuBi 2 O 4 was proposed, wherein dual redox cycles of Mn(III)/Mn(IV) and Cu(I)/Cu(II) on Mn 3 O 4 /CuBi 2 O 4 effectively facilitated PMS activation to generate · O 2 − , 1 O 2 , SO 4 · − and · OH, which was responsible for DCF degradation. Moreover, combined with degraded products detected by high resolution liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and corresponding toxic assessment results, the possible degradation pathways of DCF were proposed and the relative toxicity of degraded products was evaluated. This work may be useful for developing stronger heterogeneous activators of PMS to construct more efficient AOPs for purifying wastewater.

A novel no-clean flux enabled direct, plating-free soldering of Cu/Al joints using Sn42Bi58 paste. • Organic acid carbon chain length was tailored to regulate flux activity and interfacial reactions. • A synergistic mechanism between organic acids and fluoroborate salts was elucidated. • The medium-chain succinic acid flux achieved optimal joint strength via interfacial solid solution formation. • The study establishes a clear structure-property relationship from molecular design to joint performance. This study addresses the challenge of low-temperature, flux-based direct soldering for copper‑aluminum dissimilar joints, a critical need in advanced thermal management. A series of novel fluxes were synthesized by incorporating dicarboxylic acids with varying carbon chain lengths—malonic, succinic, and adipic acid—into a triethanolamine-fluoroborate matrix, mixed with Sn42Bi58 powder to form corresponding solder pastes (TL-1 to TL-4). Comprehensive characterization, including wettability tests, shear strength measurements, XRD, SEM-EDS, and FIB-TEM analysis, was conducted. Mechanistically, it is revealed that the carbon chain length dictates the critical balance between flux viscosity (steric hindrance) and carboxylate activation capability. The medium-chain succinic acid in TL-3 achieves an optimal “activation-diffusion-reaction” synergy. It acts concertedly with fluoroborates to thoroughly disrupt the stable native oxides (CuO and Al 2 O 3 ) while simultaneously lowering the diffusion energy barrier for Zn 2+ . This specific interfacial modulation entirely suppresses the conventional formation of brittle intermetallic compounds (IMCs) or non-bonded oxide residues. Consequently, TL-3 facilitates the formation of continuous nanoscale Cu 0.95 Zn 0.049 and Al 0.86 Zn 0.14 solid solution layers at the copper and aluminum interfaces, respectively, achieving robust atomic-level metallurgical bonding. Macroscopically, TL-3 exhibits superior performance with a minimum contact angle of 3.2° on Cu, an exceptional shear strength of 125.86 MPa, and an interfacial nanohardness of 0.826 ± 0.068 GPa. The primary scientific contribution of this work lies in elucidating this novel solid-solution-mediated interfacial strengthening mechanism, offering an innovative atomic-scale engineering pathway for the highly reliable, electroplating-free low-temperature soft soldering of Cu/Al heterogeneous structures. Environmental benign non-noble NiCu catalysts with well-distributed homogeneous nanoalloy structure was fabricated from layered double hydroxide for semi-hydrogenation of acetylene. Compared with monometallic Ni catalyst, the introduction of Cu enhanced ethene selectivity and decreased the deactivation rate in long-term reaction. Furthermore, to give a thorough understanding on structure dependent performance, conventional impregnation was also used to obtain bimetallic NiCu catalyst for comparison. Interestingly, imp-NiCu/MMO presented the mixture of monometallic Ni, Cu and bimetallic NiCu. Catalytic results indicated that 100% conversion was achieved at 160 °C with improved selectivity (>70%) over NiCu nanoalloy catalyst, while bimetallic NiCu catalyst with mixed structure showed both poor conversion (50%) and selectivity (65%). Enhanced activity was attributed to small particle size (3.2 nm) and high metal dispersion (31.4%). Improved selectivity and anti-coking ability were related to the alloying of Ni with Cu, which was conducive to isolate Ni atoms from one another confirmed by STEM-EDX and transfer electron from Cu to Ni certified by XPS. Additionally, superior performance was also found in semi-hydrogenations of hexyne, phenylacetylene, 1,2-diphenylethyne and ethyl phenylpropiolate over NiCu nanoalloy.

The reduction of NO x emission during the cold start period of diesel vehicles requires special attention in accordance with the emission regulations. In this work, the direct incorporation of cerium and copper in SAPO-18 catalyst with AEI type framework structure (CuCe-SAPO-18) resulting in a substantial enhancement of the performance in the low-temperature NH 3 -SCR reaction (<200 ℃). A small amount of cerium (0.13–0.31 wt%) broadened the reaction temperature range of use and increased the hydrothermal stability of the catalyst considerably. The cerium species was introduced in the ion-exchange sites of Cu-SAPO-18 in the form of Ce 3+ ions even with high loading (3.15 wt%). The Ce 3+ ions were found to affect the distribution of silicon and aluminum atom coordination ( 29 Si NMR, 27 Al MAS NMR) in the AEI-type skeleton structure leading to an increase of both the amount of active Cu 2+ species and the acidity of the CuCe-SAPO-18 catalysts that are beneficial for the NH 3 -SCR reaction.

Bimetallic CuCo-doped graphene-like carbon nanosheets (CuCo@GCNs) were synthesized via a facile and efficient process using agarose as carbon templates to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetracycline (TC) degradation. In this study, CuCo@GCNs/PMS system exhibited excellent TC removal efficiency (0.182 min −1 ), which was unaffected by various water matrices and applicable to a wide pH range (3.44–8.44). Radicals (SO 4 •− , • OH, and O 2 •− ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) pathways collectively contributed to catalytic TC oxidation based on quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the mechanism of PMS molecules activated on the surface of CuCo@GCNs, in which CoO provided more catalytic sites while Cu 2 O further enhanced electron transfer. Moreover, the synergistic effect of CuCo bimetal could accelerate redox cycles of Cu + /Cu 2+ and Co 2+ /Co 3+ , inducing the generation of abundant oxygen vacancies (O V s), thus enhancing PMS activation performance. Three potential TC degradation pathways were proposed according to fifteen possible intermediates detected by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). In brief, this work provides an efficient CuCo@GCNs heterogeneous catalyst and a new insight into PMS activation, which extends the application of bimetallic materials for environmental remediation.

Currently, the thermal runaway of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has become one of its most concerned safety hazards. Therefore, battery cells with high safety and energy density have become the important goal for the development of LIBs. In this work, the ultralight and high thermal conductivity of the Cu@graphene-like thermal film (shortened as Cu@GTF) composite current collector with a sandwich structure was derived from polyimide and prepared by the vacuum evaporation method. Compared with the commercial copper foil, the Cu@GTF showed a smaller areal density of <7.0 mg/cm2 (vs 17.50 mg/cm2 of commercial Cu foil) and a higher thermal conductivity of >550 mm2/s (vs 164 mm2/s of Cu foil). Considering its lighter mass, higher thermal conductivity, and reasonable electrical conductivity, the Cu@GTF as a current collector may become a favorable competitor of the commercial Cu foil to meet people’s needs for high safety, energy, and performance of LIBs.
