The redox homeostasis in tumor cells is an innate defense barrier for reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated tumor therapy. Herein, an intratumoral cascade-responsive multifunctional nanodiamond-based platform (NPCD) with a hydrodynamic diameter of 191 ± 5 nm triggering redox dyshomeostasis is fabricated by Cu2+-mediated coordination for polylysinated nanodiamond and doxorubicin (DOX) to achieve cancer-specific diagnosis and therapy. The NPCD nanoplatform enables precise tumor fluorescence localization and chemotherapy through a “turn on” effect due to being specifically activated by GSH to trigger DOX release at a low-pH tumor-specific environment instead of normal cells. Furthermore, NPCD realizes Cu+-based chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and induces GSH depletion by Cu2+ reduction to support CDT. These cause intracellular redox dyshomeostasis, making tumor cells more sensitive to the NPCD nanoparticles. Additionally, NPCD also possesses the intrinsic ability to reverse drug resistance. Of note, NPCD mainly accumulates in the tumor site in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice and enhances the efficacy of therapeutic interventions with negligible side effects. More interestingly, combined with programmed cell death ligand 1 antibody (anti-PD-L1) and imiquimod (R837), NPCD significantly suppresses distant tumor growth, indicating a good immune response. Therefore, this work opens perspectives for the further development of synergistic therapy through a Cu2+-mediated intratumoral cascade reaction.

This study aimed to elucidate how Cu 2+ influences the interaction between catechins and zein using multi-spectral and molecular modeling techniques. As a result, UV–vis spectra revealed characteristic changes, indicating chelation between catechins and Cu 2+ at a 1:1 M ratio. Fluorescence spectra further confirmed interaction through a static quenching mechanism between catechins/catechin-Cu 2+ complexes and zein. Catechins induced changes in the microenvironment and hydrophobicity surrounding the binding site of zein, whereas Cu 2+ had minimal impact on these aspects. CD spectra underscored catechins' role in altering zein's secondary structure conformation, alongside Cu 2+ . Various types of interactions (hydrophobic, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and van der Waals) contributed to the binding of catechins/catechin-Cu 2+ complexes with zein. Molecular modeling elucidated key residues and binding conformations, highlighting the significance of hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding in their association. These findings not only deepen our understanding of catechin-Cu 2+ -zein interactions but also underscore their potential applications in the food industry.

Background As the first line of immune defense and the largest organ of body, skin is vulnerable to damage caused by surgery, burns, collisions and other factors. Wound healing in the skin is a long and complex physiological process that is influenced by a number of different factors. Proper wound care can greatly improve the speed of wound healing and reduce the generation of scars. However, traditional wound dressings (bandages, gauze, etc.) often used in clinical practice have a single function, lack of active ingredients and are limited in use. Hydrogels with three-dimensional network structure are a potential biomedical material because of their physical and chemical environment similar to extracellular matrix. In particular, hydrogel dressings with low price, good biocompatibility, degradability, antibacterial and angiogenic activity are favored by the public. Methods Here, a carboxymethyl chitosan-based hydrogel dressing (CMCS-TA/Cu2+) reinforced by copper ion crosslinked tannic acid (TA/Cu2+) nanoparticles was developed. This study investigated the physical and chemical characteristics, cytotoxicity, and angiogenesis of TA/Cu2+ nanoparticles and CMCS-TA/Cu2+ hydrogels. Furthermore, a full-thickness skin defect wound model was employed to assess the in vivo wound healing capacity of hydrogel dressings. Results The introduction of TA/Cu2+ nanoparticles not only could increase the mechanical properties of the hydrogel but also continuously releases copper ions to promote cell migration (the cell migration could reach 92% at 48 h) and tubule formation, remove free radicals and promote wound healing (repair rate could reach 90% at 9 days). Conclusion Experiments have proved that CMCS-TA/Cu2+ hydrogel has good cytocompatibility, antioxidant and wound healing ability, providing an advantageous solution for skin repair.

Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCh) is a natural polysaccharide derivative with biodegradability, rich in active amino and carboxyl groups. It can act as a ligand to coordinate with rare earth ions, transferring absorbed energy to the central ion to sensitize its luminescence. In this paper, CMCh-Tb 3+ was prepared as a solid fluorescent probe by mixing CMCh solution with Tb 3+ . The morphology, structure and properties of CMCh-Tb 3+ were characterized and analyzed by SEM, IR and XPS, and then the chemical structure of CMCh-Tb 3+ was determined. CMCh-Tb 3+ , as a highly sensitive fluorescent sensor for detecting Cu 2+ , has a detection limit (LOD) of 27.14 nmol/L. Through characterization using fluorescence spectroscopy, ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, and fluorescence lifetime, we further explored the mechanism of Cu 2+ fluorescence quenching, finding that this process is primarily achieved through dynamic quenching. Additionally, we discovered that glutathione (GSH) can form a strong coordination with Cu 2+ , thereby inhibiting the quenching effect of Cu 2+ on the emission intensity of CMCh-Tb 3+ and restoring its luminescence characteristics. This finding indicates that CMCh-Tb 3+ can not only serve as a fluorescence sensor for detecting Cu 2+ but also as a reversible fluorescence sensor, significantly enhancing its performance in practical applications.

The combined contamination of antibiotics and heavy metals usually occurs in aquaculture wastewater and has high ecological toxicity. Currently, most research only focuses on the removal of a single heavy metal or antibiotics, and there is little research on the simultaneous removal of both. Therefore, to effectively treat them, this study prepared TiO 2 -loaded phosphogypsum-modified biochar (TYBC450) for adsorption and photocatalytic removal of ofloxacin (OFL) and copper (Cu 2+ ). The removal performance and mechanisms of OFL and Cu 2+ were explored, and their ecological toxicity was assessed through zebrafish acute toxicity experiments. The results suggested a synergistic effect between OFL and Cu 2+ . The adsorption efficiencies of TYBC450 for OFL and Cu 2+ were 88.16% and 90.87% (the adsorption capacities were 1.75 and 3.65 mg/g, respectively). Bridging, precipitation, and complexation effects were the main co-adsorption mechanisms. The photocatalytic efficiencies of OFL and Cu 2+ were 91.23% and 72.09% (the rate constants were 0.0101 and 0.0045 min - 1 , respectively). OFL acted as a hole-trapping agent, while Cu 2+ acted as an electron acceptor, hindering the combination of e - and h + . There were 12 intermediates in the OFL degradation process, which had lower toxicity than the mother organism. Both the cyclic regeneration and actual aquaculture wastewater application tests indicated that TYBC450 had potential application prospects.

Wastewater containing Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ poses a huge threat to the surrounding environment and human safety. To treat such wastewater, this study developed a novel composite adsorbent (LZT 850 @SA) from thermally activated LZT and sodium alginate (SA). LZT was thermally activated at 850°C (LZT 850 ). The composite LZT 850 @SA was synthesized by mixing LZT 850 powder with SA solution under optimized conditions (20°C, 4 g/L SA, 90 min). Adsorption performance for Cu 2+ /Cd 2+ was evaluated under varying pH, contact time, temperature, and concentration. Kinetics, isotherms, selectivity, and regeneration were systematically studied. Activation at 850°C enhanced LZT crystallinity and created pores (SSA: 5.46 m 2 /g). SA compositing formed unique fibrous architectures and amorphous-crystalline interfaces, significantly increasing SSA to 16.31 m 2 /g (BET). XRD confirmed the dominant phases (CaCO 3 , CaO, MgO) in LZT 850 and phase transition upon SA compositing. SEM/HRTEM revealed SA's transformation of the granular LZT 850 surface into a highly porous, roughened morphology with uniform particle distribution. At pH 6, LZT 850 @SA exhibited exceptional adsorption capacities of 223.47 mg/g (Cu 2+ ) and 227.99 mg/g (Cd 2+ ), reaching equilibrium within 120 min. Adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating chemisorption-dominated monolayer adsorption. Mechanisms involved chemical coordination (C=O, O-C=O, O-H, iron oxides), ion exchange, coordination and electrostatic interactions. The composite demonstrated excellent selectivity and retained 81.9% (Cu 2+ ) and 85.52% (Cd 2+ ) adsorption capacity after 5 regeneration cycles. This provides a new strategy for the composite of solid waste and biopolymers, and at the same time offers technical insights for the treatment of heavy metal-polluted wastewater.

The effective elimination of the highly toxic phosphine (PH3) is crucial for environmental and human health. Nonetheless, developing efficient methods for the removal of PH3 and its conversion into valuable resources remains a significant challenge. Herein, we reported a novel strategy of N doping in Cu-doped active carbon (Cu-AC) to realize efficient PH3 removal. Introduction of N into Cu-AC induces strong interaction between Cu and N, which greatly promotes the dispersion of Cu species and stabilize the active Cu2+ species of PH3 removal due to the electronegativity of N. In addition, doping N also improves the basic intensity and oxidation capability, which provide high benefits for the adsorption and activation of PH3. As a result, the obtained N-doped Cu-AC (Cu-N-AC) shows exceptional performance for the oxidative removal of PH3 to generate H3PO4 at 70 °C, reaching a high breakthrough capacity of 534.5 mg·g-1, which outperforms most of the previously reported catalysts. The Cu-N-AC can be easily regenerated through water washing and air drying, showcasing its great potential for practical applications. This study not only introduces a promising material for PH3 removal, but also offers an innovative approach to design catalysts for efficient PH3 utilization, presenting an important contribution to the field of phosphorus resource recovery.

Introduction: The procedural complexity and time-consuming of conventional pesticide residue detection methods in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) significantly impeded their application in modern systems. To address this, this study presented an innovative dual-mode sensor driven by Cu2+/Cu+ redox-cycling, which achieved efficient signal transduction from enzyme inhibition to optical response for rapid acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and organophosphorus pesticide (OP) residue detection. Methods: The AB-Cu NPs sensor, a dynamic redox-responsive system, was constructed via coordination-driven assembly of Azo-Bodipy 685 (AB 685) and Cu2+. Initially, Cu2+ quenched the optical signals of AB 685 through photoinduced electron transfer (PET), maintaining an “OFF” state. Upon AChE-catalyzed hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine chloride (ATChCl) to thiocholine (TCh), Cu2+ was reduced to Cu+, thereby activating dual ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis)/fluorescence (FL) signals (“ON” state). OP residues were quantified by their inhibition of AChE, which blocked Cu2+/Cu+ conversion and suppressed signal generation. Results: The sensor exhibited positive sensitivity with detection limits of 0.0327 U/L for AChE activity and 1.72 ng/mL for triazophos, leveraging Cu2+/Cu+ redox-cycling for signal amplification. Notably, the Cu2+/Cu+ valence interconversion coupled enzyme inhibition with probe responsiveness, ensuring the both procedural easily and rapid response.Discussion: This study developed a portable detection platform based on valence interconversion coupled enzyme inhibition with probe responsiveness. The dual-signal output enhanced reliability and the redox-driven mechanism enabled signal amplification. This advancement provided a real-time, portable and rapid detection for AChE activity and pesticide exposure of TCMs, bridging gaps in agricultural safety and pharmaceutical standardization.

Antibiotic contamination in environmental waters often occurs at low residue levels, necessitating pre-analysis concentration. To address this, we synthesized a hydrophilic molecularly imprinted resin (MIR) using melamine, urea, and formaldehyde as monomers, with oxytetracycline as the template molecule. Enhanced adsorption efficiency was achieved by doping the resin with Cu 2+ , which forms stable complexes with oxytetracycline. This Cu 2+ -doped MIR (Cu-MIR) was employed as a selective adsorbent in solid-phase extraction (SPE) to enrich four tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) from aqueous solutions. The optimized parameters for Cu-MIR in environmental water sample analysis resulted in linear detection ranges from 0.20 to 40 ng/mL, recoveries between 80.2 % to 102.4 %, relative standard deviations ≤ 9.0 %, a detection limit of 0.1 ng/mL, and the enrichment factors were between 4.79–5.13, as determined by HPLC-MS. Given its diverse adsorption mechanisms and specificity, Cu-MIR shows promise for practical applications in real-world sample analysis.

Background 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50), known as a novel explosive, is characterized by its high energy and low sensibility. It is a preferred explosive for criminals to carry out illegal attacks, posing a significant security risk. Therefore, the development of an efficient and highly specific detection method for TKX-50 is of significant practical importance. Fluorescent chemical sensors have demonstrated tremendous potential in explosive detection due to their high sensitivity, rapid response, and visual detection capabilities. Results A novel fluorescent chemical sensor N’-((E)-5-((E)-2-(3-(dicyanomethylene)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-1-en- 1-yl )vinyl)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carbohydrazide ( EXF ) was designed and synthesized, and its structure was characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and HRMS. The sensor can achieve continuous and specific detection of Cu 2+ and TKX-50 through the ‘on-off-on’ fluorescence response. The EXF achieved a detection limit of 0.0968 μM for Cu 2+ . The complex [ EXF -Cu 2+ ] could specifically identify the novel explosive TKX-50 among a variety of explosives tested, with a detection limit of 0.0648 μM. In this study, the qualitative detection of Cu 2+ and TKX-50 was carried out using test strips, and the quantitative determination of Cu 2+ and TKX-50 in real water samples was successfully achieved based on the standard curve of a smartphone. Additionally, EXF can be used for the visualization of latent fingerprints (LFPs), demonstrating its potential application in the field of criminal investigations. The application of EXF for Cu 2+ and TKX-50 imaging in living cells is also demonstrated. Significance The fluorescent sensor EXF establishes a connection between explosive detection and ion sensing by utilizing Cu 2+ as a “bridge”. This research not only provides innovative explosive detection technologies, but also offers valuable design principles for multifunctional fluorescent sensors. The test strips and smartphone platform have preliminarily achieved on-site rapid qualitative and quantitative detection. And the LFPs imaging and detection in living cells further expand the application field, which has significant practical application value.

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3−RR) to ammonia (NH3) presents an alternative, sustainable approach to ammonia production. However, the existing catalysts suffer from poor NH3yield under lower concentrations of NO3−, and the kinetic understanding of bimetal catalysis is lacking. In this study, a Co3O4–modified Cu2+1O nanowire (CoCuNWs) catalyst with a high specific surface area was synthesized to effectively produce NH3from a 10 mM KNO3basic solution. CoCuNWs demonstrated a high NH3yield rate of 0.30 mmol h−1cm−2with an NH3Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 96.7% at −0.2 V vs. RHE, which is 1.5 times higher than the bare Cu2+1O NWs. The synergistic effect between Co3O4and Cu2+1O significantly enhanced both the nitrate conversion and ammonia yield. Importantly, it is revealed that the surface of CoCuNWs is kinetically more easily saturated with NO3−(NO2−) ions than that of Cu2+1O NWs, as evidenced by both the higher current density and the plateau occurring at higher NOx−concentrations. In addition, CoCuNWs exhibit a higher diffusion coefficient of NO3−, being 1.6 times higher than that of Cu2+1O NWs, which also indicates that the presence of Co3O4could promote the diffusion and adsorption of NO3−on CoCuNWs. Moreover, the ATR–SEIRAS analysis was applied to illustrate the reduction pathway of NO3−to NH3on CoCuNWs, which follows the formation of the key intermediate from *NO2−, *NO, *NH2OH to *NH3. This work presents a strategy for constructing dual–metal catalysts for NO3−RR and provides an insight to understand the catalysis from the perspective of the kinetics.

Heavy metal pollution has become an urgent environmental problem. However, the traditional heavy metal ions detection methods mostly need large precision instruments, which have disadvantages such as complex sample processing, long detection time and high cost. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are efficient to solve the problems of fewer active sites and poor selectivity. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs), a green precursor with adjustable structure design, can purposefully modify the required functional groups on the surface of CQDs and make it possess better performance. In this study, NA-CQDs from NADESs using one-step solvothermal method were successfully synthesized. The results showed that the diameters of NA-CQDs range from 3 to 6 nm. The optical properties indicated that it has excellent optoelectronic properties, excitation-dependent and pH stability. It proved that the fluorescent intensity of Cu2+ was strongly quenched by the NA-CQDs compared to other metal ions and was linear in the range of 0.0001–50 μM. The mechanism of NA-CQDs synthesis and Cu2+ detection is also speculated. NA-CQDs have great potential in the detection of heavy metals in wastewater.
