A Cu2O-based marine antifouling coating with controlled release of copper ion mediated by amphiphilic PLMA-b-PDMAEMA copolymers

Tongtong Ding,Luyao Xu,Xiangting Liu,Liang Ma,Yingxin Cui,Dalong Li,Xiuhua Sun,Changlu Gao

To achieve prolonged and sustainable release of copper ion in Cu 2 O-containing marine coatings, poly(lauryl methacrylate)-b-poly(2-( N , N -dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PLMA-b-PDMAEMA) diblock copolymers with different block ratios and molecular weights were synthesized by atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. It was proved that the copolymers are able to coordinate with copper ion. And the surface wettability tests showed that the amphiphilic copolymers may undergo structure change in seawater. Taking advantage of the structure transformation and copper coordination abilities, the copolymer was employed to encapsulate Cu 2 O for the preparation of antifouling coatings. A controllable and continuous release of copper ion from Cu 2 O/copolymer coatings was then obtained. More importantly, it showed that higher PLMA/PDMAEMA block ratio exhibited better bactericidal rate. Actually, the bactericidal ability of the coating depends on the time duration of copper ion on the surface instead of the hydrolysis speed of the coating, in other words, the hydrophobic interaction of PLMA with the resin may play a major role in the antifouling performance of the marine coating. Self-polishing coatings Cu 2 O/copolymer/polycaprolactone (PCL) were then prepared and applied for marine field test, the antifouling performances were proved to be comparable to that of the commercially available self-polishing coatings.

Construction of Cu2O/Cu heterojunction with hierarchical hollow sphere structure as visible-light driven photocatalyst for efficient water remediation

Junhua Li,Linsen Huang,Zhimei Yang,Zengjian Liu,Xiaosong Sun

Sunlight driven photocatalytic degradation is an effective and eco-friendly technology for water remediation . And formation of metal-semiconductor heterojunction provides a promising strategy to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of photocatalyst. In this work, the hierarchical Cu 2 O/Cu hollow sphere was newly prepared by a simple template-free and one-pot solvothermal method without using any organic capping agents. The composition, morphology structure and photoelectric properties of the prepared photocatalysts were investigated by the characterization of XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM , nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, UV-DRS and EIS, etc. It was found that the Cu 2 O/Cu composite with hierarchical hollow sphere structure exhibits good stability and excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and tetracycline (TC) under visible light, because the huge specific surface area provides more active sites and the Cu 2 O/Cu heterojunction could efficiently facilitate photogenerated carries separation. Further, free radical scavenging experiments and EPR tests confirmed the ·O 2 - radicals were produced and played the most important role in the photocatalytic process. Finally, the possible photocatalytic mechanism and the transfer processes of photogenerated carriers of hierarchical Cu 2 O/Cu hollow sphere was proposed. As a result, the hierarchical Cu 2 O/Cu hollow sphere may be a suitable candidate of high-efficiency photocatalyst for the wastewater treatment .

Hou Qingyao,Qin Langlang,Peng Xueer,Zhou Chenyang,Li Xuelian,Zhang Jiandong,Gao Lili

The development of catalysts with high catalytic activity and convenient recycling property is the long-term goal of sulfate-based advanced oxidation processes for the degradation of organic pollutants. In this work, a kind of iron/copper oxide hybrid catalyst (α-Fe 2 O 3 /γ-Fe 2 O 3 /Cu 2 O, CuFe-13) with both higher catalytic performance and paramagnetism was synthesized using a modified method for conventional CuFeO 2 . Through X-ray diffraction and infrared spectra characterization, the catalyst was verified a hybrid of α-Fe 2 O 3 , γ-Fe 2 O 3 and Cu 2 O, in which the exist of magnetic γ-Fe 2 O 3 was the main cause for CuFe-13’s paramagnetism and convenient magnetic recycling property. The mechanism for CuFe-13’s excellent catalytic performance was primarily investigated. Through scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption–desorption measurement, radical quenching experiments, and electron paramagnetic resonance characterization analysis, the CuFe-13 represented larger surface area, bigger porosity, more efficient synergistic effect among Cu, Fe, and O than CuFeO 2. The generation of various of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including sulfate radical ( \({\text{SO}}_{4}^{\cdot - }\) ), hydroxyl radical ( · OH), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), especially 1 O 2 were more, which might lead to CuFe-13’s higher catalytic performance. The effects of PMS concentration, CuFe-13 dosage, initial pH, initial OG concentration were analyzed. The optimal removal efficiency of OG could be achieved 100% within 20 min with 1 mM PMS and 0.2 g L −1 CuFe-13 under neutral condition. This study provided an efficient PMS-activated catalyst for degradation of organic pollution.

Rapid synthesis of Cu2O hollow spheres at low temperature and their catalytic performance for the decomposition of ammonium perchlorate

Tao-Tao Lv,Huai-Zhong Xing,Hong-Mei Yang,Hui-Xiang Wang,Jing Shi,Jing-Pei Cao,Bao-Liang Lv

In catalytic reactions, a large specific surface area usually means more active sites. Hollow structures can provide lots of surface sites to catalyze the reaction or fix the reaction center, but the preparation process is mostly complex. In this work, using NH4+ as a structure-directing agent and ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing agent, combined with the self-transformation process of metastable aggregated particles and the local Ostwald ripening mechanism, hollow Cu2O nanospheres with a large specific surface area (30.9 m2 g−1) were rapidly synthesized by a one-step method at low temperature. In the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP), it was found that the decomposition temperatures at low temperature and high temperature decreased by 31.6 °C and 125 °C, respectively. Compared with pure AP, the heat release increased by 1.5 times, and the reaction activation energy reduced by 56.0%. This is because the Cu2O hollow spheres have a larger specific surface area, and the adsorption capacity is improved owing to the loose and porous structure. The catalytic area and active sites for continuous reaction are increased, and thus the Cu2O hollow spheres exhibited excellent catalytic performance.

Tuning mobility of intermediate and electron transfer to enhance electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia on Cu2O/Cu interface

Wenyang Fu,Zhongzheng Hu,Yang Zheng,Pei Su,Qizhan Zhang,Yongli Jiao,Minghua Zhou

Compared to traditional haber–bosch process for synthetic ammonia, electrochemical reduction of nitrate to ammonia (ERNA) offers a promising and sustainable technology to generate ammonia at ambient temperature. However, the performance of ERNA is impeded by lacking of sound strategy for designing high-performance electrocatalyst. Here, a Cu based electrode with Cu 2 O/Cu interface was prepared by pulse electrodeposition and electroreduction, achieving the fast rate constant of 0.14 min −1 for reducing nitrate with a high ammonia yield rate of 2.17 mg cm -2 h −1 (faradaic efficiency: 84.36%) and ammonia selectivity of 94.4% at −0.25 V vs. RHE. Particularly, density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the adsorption energy indicated that Cu 2 O/Cu interface alleviated adsorption energy of NO 2 - NO2- from −2.02 eV (pure Cu) to −1.59 eV, improving surface diffusion of adsorbed NO 2 - NO2- . And DFT calculations for electronic structure implied that Cu 2 O/Cu interface upshifted the d band center of Cu (-2.25 eV vs. −2.48 eV of pure Cu), boosting electron transfer to NO 3 - NO3- . Additionally, in-situ infrared spectroscopic analysis confirmed vital intermediates of NO 2 - NO2- and NH 2 OH on Cu 2 O/Cu to identify reaction pathway and Gibbs free energy diagram clarified this interface decreased reaction barrier of crucial step (reducing *NO 2 to *NO) from 0.31 eV (pure Cu) to −0.77 eV for the enhancement of ERNA. Thereby, these findings demonstrated that Cu 2 O/Cu interface tunes mobility of NO 2 - NO2- and electron transfer to NO 3 - NO3- on Cu based electrocatalyst is an efficient method to promote performance of ERNA with high efficiency and rate.

Steering Multistep Charge Transfer for Highly Selectively Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 into CH4 over Pd/Cu2O/TiO2 Ternary Hybrid

Di Li,Changjian Zhou,Zhongkai Xie,Donghai Chen,Yimeng Zhou,Xiangli Shi,Deli Jiang,Min Chen,Weidong Shi

Due to the low charge separation efficiency and high stability of the CO 2 molecule, photoreduction of CO 2 into a single multielectron product such as CH 4 with a simultaneous high conversion rate and selectivity is challenging. Therefore, it is highly desirable to accelerate charge separation and transfer and provide an electron-enriched catalyst surface for the deep reduction of CO 2 . Herein, a Pd/Cu 2 O/TiO 2 ternary hybrid photocatalyst consisting of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and Cu 2 O NPs-decorated TiO 2 nanosheets is rationally designed, and highly selective photocatalytic photoreduction of CO 2 into CH 4 is achieved. The Pd/Cu 2 O/TiO 2 photocatalyst shows a high CH 4 production rate of 42.8 μmol g −1 h −1 with an extremely high selectivity of 99.5%. This CH 4 production rate is 61.1, 5.4, and 2.8 times higher than the bare TiO 2 , Cu 2 O/TiO 2 , and Pd/TiO 2 , respectively. In this Pd/Cu 2 O/TiO 2 hybrid, a consecutive multistep charge transfer is steered between the Cu 2 O/TiO 2 heterojunction and Pd, ensures accelerated charge separation and transfer, and leads to the formation of a spatially separated electron-enriched surface (Pd) and hole-enriched surface (Cu 2 O). This spatially oriented charge transfer and the charge-enriched catalyst surface synergistically contribute to the simultaneous high conversion rate and selectivity of CH 4 .

Driving Click Reactions with Plasmonic Hot Holes on (Au Core)@(Cu2O Shell) Nanostructures for Regioselective Production of 1,2,3-Triazoles

Shouren Zhang,Wenjing Yi,Yanzhen Guo,Ruibin Jiang,Xiao-Lan Chen,Baocheng Yang,Jianfang Wang

Driving organic reactions by heterogeneous photocatalysts is highly desired in green chemistry. (Plasmonic metal)/semiconductor heterostructures can greatly increase the photocatalytic activity by virtue of effective plasmonic harvesting of sunlight. Herein, we report on the driving of click reactions using (plasmonic Au nanosphere core)@(Cu2O shell) nanostructures under near-infrared light illumination. Upon plasmon excitation, the hybrid nanostructures exhibit excellent catalytic performance for the regioselective production of 1,2,3-triazoles. The yields of the click reactions under light illumination are about two times those of the reactions under sole thermal heating at the same temperatures. The reduced reaction yields in the presence of methanol, a hole scavenging agent, suggest that the plasmonic hot holes play a crucial role in the click reactions. Our results and the gained understanding will be valuable for the design of high-performance plasmonic photocatalysts for different regioselective organic reactions.

Insight into CuX (CuO, Cu2O, and CuS) for enhanced performance of CuX/g-C3N4 nanocomposites-based acetaminophen electrochemical sensors

Yao Chen,Yanyan Zhu,Yuhui Zhao,Jing Wang,Meng Li

The complexation of metals and metal compounds with organic skeletons into nanohybrid composites attracts attention in electrochemical applications due to the improved charge transfer pathways, which enhance the electrocatalytic activity. In this study, CuO, Cu 2 O, and CuS were anchored on g-C 3 N 4 sheets to construct electrochemical sensors for the detection of acetaminophen (AP). The CuX/g-C 3 N 4 nanohybrid composites were analyzed via transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Among the CuX/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites, CuS/g-C 3 N 4 displays a higher electrochemical activity. The electrochemical CuS/g-C 3 N 4 , CuO/g-C 3 N 4 , and Cu 2 O/g-C 3 N 4 sensors have wide linear ranges of 5 to 500 µM with a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.26 µM, 5 to 300 µM with a LOD of 0.32 µM, and 5 to 250 µM with a LOD of 0.47 µM, respectively. The better performance of the CuS/g-C 3 N 4 sensor is probably because of its significantly higher catalytic rate constant with respect to the oxidation of AP in electrochemical kinetics compared with those of the two other sensors, which leads to the enhanced electrocatalytic oxidation of AP. The CuX/g-C 3 N 4 -based electrochemical sensors display an excellent selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and stability. These features suggest that CuX/g-C 3 N 4 based electrochemical sensors can be sensitively detected of AP.

The solid-state in situ construction of Cu2O/CuO heterostructures with adjustable phase compositions to promote CO oxidation activity

Baolin Liu,Yizhao Li,Kun Wang,Yali Cao

Heterostructured Cu-based oxides have been widely used in many fields, such as energy storage, catalysis, and sensing. Conventional techniques for the synthesis of hybrid oxides are time-consuming and often result in low yields. The scalable preparation of heterostructured Cu-based oxides with adjustable phase composition remains a substantial challenge. We demonstrate a simple and efficient solid-state synthesis strategy for the in situ preparation of Cu2O/CuO heterostructured nanorods approximately 10 nm in width, without the use of solvents and post-calcining processing. Tuning the ratio of reactants enables optimization of the components of the Cu2O/CuO heterostructures and their catalytic activities for the carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation reaction. Benefiting from controllable composition, a synergistic effect, and surface-adsorbed oxygen, the resulting Cu2O/CuO heterostructures (Cu2O/CuO-5) show significantly improved catalytic performance in the CO oxidation reaction process. We provide a new and simple method for synthesizing various metal oxide heterostructures for wide-ranging applications.

α-Fe2O3/Cu2O(SO4) composite as a novel and efficient heterogeneous catalyst for photo-Fenton removal of Orange II

Xiaojun Guo,Yanan Xu,Fei Zha,Xiaohua Tang,Haifeng Tian

Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ), as one of Fenton reagents, is widely investigated for the treatment of wastewater in the field of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Considering the fast charge carrier recombination of hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ), we have successfully synthesized a novel and high active heterogeneous Fenton catalyst α-Fe 2 O 3 /Cu 2 O(SO 4 ) for the degradation of organic pollutants. The results show that the as-obtained Cu 2 O(SO 4 )-Fe9 composite exhibits excellent degradation properties of Orange II. 98.9% degradation rate was achieved for 100 mL of 50 mg/L Orange II solution in the condition of 0.3 g/L Cu 2 O(SO 4 )-Fe9 catalyst, 3 mM H 2 O 2 and pH = 3.5. The degradation rate constants of Cu 2 O(SO 4 )-Fe9 in the photo-Fenton-like system are 9.33 and 4.07 times of Cu 2 O(SO 4 ) and α-Fe 2 O 3 , respectively. In addition, the mechanism and pathway for the degradation of Orange II were proposed. The scheme of combining copper-based oxysulfate Cu 2 O(SO 4 ) with hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) could improve the efficiency of charge carrier separation, which will further enhance the catalytic activity and expand its application in water purification.

Highly Selective Photoreduction of CO2 with Suppressing H2 Evolution by Plasmonic Au/CdSe–Cu2O Hierarchical Nanostructures under Visible Light

Hongzhi Wang,Hongpan Rong,Dong Wang,Xinyuan Li,Erhuan Zhang,Xiaodong Wan,Bing Bai,Meng Xu,Jiajia Liu,Jia Liu,Wenxing Chen,Jiatao Zhang

Here, the photocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) with the selectivity of carbon products up to 100% is realized by completely suppressing the H 2 evolution reaction under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation. To target this, plasmonic Au/CdSe dumbbell nanorods enhance light harvesting and produce a plasmon-enhanced charge-rich environment; peripheral Cu 2 O provides rich active sites for CO 2 reduction and suppresses the hydrogen generation to improve the selectivity of carbon products. The middle CdSe serves as a bridge to transfer the photocharges. Based on synthesizing these Au/CdSe–Cu 2 O hierarchical nanostructures (HNSs), efficient photoinduced electron/hole (e − /h + ) separation and 100% of CO selectivity can be realized. Also, the 2e − /2H + products of CO can be further enhanced and hydrogenated to effectively complete 8e − /8H + reduction of CO 2 to methane (CH 4 ), where a sufficient CO concentration and the proton provided by H 2 O reduction are indispensable. Under the optimum condition, the Au/CdSe–Cu 2 O HNSs display high photocatalytic activity and stability, where the stable gas generation rates are 254 and 123 µmol g −1 h −1 for CO and CH 4 over a 60 h period.

Development of an epoxy-based self-intumescent fire protective coating containing an appropriate mass ratio of APP and Cu2O

Zhao Chengshou,Jiang Yisong,Fu Wang,Liu Zhuangyuan,Liu Siyuan,Peng Huaqiao,Esmaeili Nima

A novel epoxy-based self-intumescent fire protective coating has been developed by formulating a combination of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and copper (I) oxide (Cu 2 O) in epoxy resin (EP). The effects of various combinations on fire protective performance for steel plate were evaluated using a lab-scale simulated big panel test. Formulations with different mass ratios of APP to Cu 2 O ranging from 10:0 to 2:8 exhibit good fire protective performance for steel plate. While the final equilibrium backside temperature of un-protected steel plate reached 529 °C, it did not exceed 282 °C for the protected plates with 2 mm thick coatings, which is much lower than the failure temperature of steel (ca. 500 °C). The lowest final equilibrium backside temperature of coated steel plate was 234.5 °C for the optimal formulation (EP/24APP/16Cu 2 O) with an APP/Cu 2 O mass ratio of 6/4 in EP. Interestingly, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value (46.8%) for the optimized formulation (EP/24APP/16Cu 2 O) is not the highest, being lower than those of (EP/40APP/0Cu 2 O) and (EP/32APP/8Cu 2 O) formulations. The fire behavior of the optimized formulation (EP/24APP/16Cu 2 O) and control EP was compared using the cone calorimetry. The main fire hazard parameters such as peak heat release rate, total smoke production and peak CO production for EP/24APP/16Cu 2 O are reduced by 80.0%, 59.5% and 75.0%, respectively, relative to those for EP. This indicates that the EP/24APP/16Cu 2 O formulation provides significantly better fire safety than does control EP alone. A possible mode of action for the combination of APP/Cu 2 O in terms of the expansion ratio and heat insulation degree of the formed intumescent char layer may be proposed. Thus, this work contributed a reference for developing intumescent fire protective coating with high fire safety.
