Developing surface-functionalized catalysts with exceptional activity and selectivity for the electrocatalytic CO 2 RR to C 2+ products under neutral electrolyte.
A remarkable C 2+ FE of nearly 90% at an unprecedented current density of 300 mA cm −2 and maintain high FE (> 80%) at the wide current density performance (100–600 mA cm −2 ) in neutral environments using a flow cell as well as MEA electrolyzer.
Mechanical study reveals that reducing the coverage of coordinated K·H 2 O water increased the probability of intermediate reactants (CO) interacting with the surface, thereby promoting efficient C–C coupling and enhancing the yield of C 2+ products.

The construction of multicomponent transition metal oxide catalysts can effectively increase the surface defects of catalysts, and bring a synergistic effect from different components, thus enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species and improving the catalytic activity of catalysts for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) oxidation. In this article, CuO/Co3O4catalysts with abundant oxygen vacancies for the degradation of ethyl acetate was prepared by a simple impregnation method. The effect of the ratio of Co/Cu on the redox capacity, oxygen vacancy, active oxygen species and catalytic oxidation activity of ethyl acetate were studied. The 90% conversion and mineralization temperatures of ethyl acetate for the optimal catalyst Co3O4-20Cu are 211 and 214 °C (WHSV = 60,000 mL/(g·h), 1000 ppm ethyl acetate), which also shows good stability and excellent water vapor resistance. Compared with pure Co3O4, the CuO/Co3O4catalysts have more oxygen vacancies, provide more reactive oxygen species, allowing the catalyst better low-temperature reduction. Through in situ DRIFTS study, the intermediates of ethyl acetate decomposition were analyzed, then a possible catalytic oxidation mechanism of ethyl acetate on the Co3O4-20Cu catalyst was proposed. In addition, we prepared a Co3O4-20Cu/cordierite monolithic catalyst on the basis of Co3O4-20Cu, exhibiting a good catalytic activity in degradation of ethyl acetate.

In this study, Ni/MWCNTs/CuO/Fe 2 O 3 composite nanomaterials were synthesised by a simple hydrothermal method, using Fe 2 O 3 as a substrate material and taking advantage of the excellent properties of carbon nanotubes, which possess a large surface area, and the catalytic ability of Ni. These nanocomposites are easy to synthesise and cost-effective. Compared to CuO/Fe 2 O 3 and MWCNTs/CuO/Fe 2 O 3 , Ni/MWCNTs/CuO/Fe 2 O 3 exhibits higher sensitivity and response values for H 2 S at room temperature. In particular, the best performance was achieved when the content of Ni/MWCNTs was 5 wt%. The sensing material, featuring a short response/recovery time (4 s/10 s), a low lower limit of detection (10 ppb), a high response value (100 ppm, 125), and high selectivity, is an excellent detection material for H 2 S. The enhanced performance of the composites can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the formation of multiple heterojunctions and Schottky barriers facilitates electron transfer. Secondly, the interconnection of the conductive backbones of the MWCNTs increases the area of mutual contact, thereby providing more active sites for the reaction. Lastly, the highly efficient electrocatalysis of Ni reduces the activation energy of the reaction, accelerating the reaction kinetics, which in turn improves the gas-sensitive performance of the sensing materials for H 2 S.

Humidity sensor is crucial for broader applications like biomedicine and semiconductor fabrication. It is still a formidable challenge to achieve a humidity sensor with high sensitivity and anti-pollution ability. Inspired by horsefly eye, we propose a superhydrophilic CuO nanowires quartz crystal microbalance humidity sensor covered by micro-pit array, achieving outstanding self-cleaning properties. The physicochemical property of the sensing materials was characterized in situ by SEM, XRD, and XPS. The sensing characteristics of the specimen towards water molecules are studied by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, showing high sensitivity of 82.5±7.7 Hz/%RH. Molecular dynamic simulation and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller nitrogen sorption analysis are conducted for revealing the superhydrophilicity mechanism of CuO nanowires. Then a CuO nanowires humidity-sensing model is established, verified by both theoretical calculations and experiments. A smart non-contact sensing system based on the sensors was constructed, and the humidity intensity of human breath or fingers were detected. Our works demonstrate brilliant properties of the superhydrophilic CuO nanowires for non-contact sensing applications, providing new solutions for medical health monitoring, industrial environment detection, and human-computer interaction, etc.

Conventional metal oxide sensors often lack sufficient sensitivity due to limited adsorption sites. Loading clusters is an effective surface-modification strategy. In this work, CuO clusters of approximately 3 nm were highly dispersed on high-surface-area SnO2 nanoboxes. TEM confirmed the cluster sizes and dispersion degrees of the CuO clusters, while Raman and XPS collectively confirmed that CuO modifies the electronic structure of the SnO2 support and induces the formation of new oxygen vacancies. The optimized Cu/SN-2 sensor exhibited a response of 39.25 toward 10 ppm ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) at 130 °C, which is 1.92 times higher than that of SnO2 nanoboxes (20.46 at 140 °C). The diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) indicated that CuO lowers the activation energy for EMC decomposition, producing intermediates like CO2, methanol, and ethanol at lower temperatures, thus reducing the sensor operating temperature. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that Cu sites act as negatively charged centers, promoting EMC adsorption and enhancing sensitivity. This work offers a simple, low-cost surface modification route to improve gas sensing. Furthermore, as EMC is a common electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries, its leakage poses safety risks. Integrating such EMC sensors into battery safety systems can enable ultraearly leak warnings, helping prevent fires and explosions.

Chiral recognition and detection of enantiomer molecules are crucial for biochemical sensing and pharmaceutical applications. In this study, a rod-shaped left-handed cellulose nanocrystal (CNC, length of ∼75 nm and diameter of ∼10 nm) is extracted from strobili fibers of plane trees through acid hydrolysis. Then, octahedral CuO/C nanoparticles (∼450 nm) are synthesized via thermal decomposition of the Cu-MOF precursor. Finally, CNC@CuO/C is prepared by the self-assembly of CNC and CuO/C driven by solvent evaporation. The CNC@CuO/C electrode demonstrates a remarkable enantioselectivity to l-cysteine (l-Cys) and achieves a high sensitivity of 3.14 μA·mM–1 and a low detection limit (LOD) of 4.62 μM. The electrode exhibits an excellent anti-interference capability, reproducibility, repeatability (RSD < 5%), and stability (>90% after 15 days). This presents a sustainable approach to use renewable nanomaterials, and it also shows a promising potential for clinical diagnostics.

The electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECO 2 R) driven by the renewable energy represents an effective approach to mitigate atmospheric CO 2 concentration and to achieve carbon neutrality. Zinc (Zn) and its oxides, being among the most abundant metal materials, are frequently employed in the generation of CO by ECO 2 R. Cooper and its oxides have the moderate *CO affinity which enables the C-C coupling reaction to produce the higher value C2+ products. In this work, we have developed the novel CuO/ZnO p-n heterojunction tandem catalyst using a straightforward solvothermal method. By optimizing the content of CuO/ZnO heterojunction, a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 37% for C 2 H 4 can be achieved in a gas diffusion flow cell, which is one of the highest among the Cu-Zn-based catalysts for ECO 2 R. Mechanism investigations illuminate that CuO/ZnO heterojunction interface enhances the adsorption of *CO 2 – intermediates facilitating the formation of *CO intermediates than pristine CuO, meanwhile weakens the adsorption of *H impeding the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. Therefore, the spillover of CO from ZnO to CuO sites and the electrons rebalance on CuO/ZnO heterojunction interface promote the C-C coupling reaction rates, thus greatly enhances the selectivity for C 2 H 4 .

In recent decades, the preparation of various metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) has been widely reported in pursuit of excellent reactivity and safety. However, there is still relatively little research on structural energetic materials (EMs) through 3D printing of MICs inks. In this work, the hollow filaments with different MICs formulas were prepared by 3D printing using a core-shell nozzle. The morphology, thermal decomposition and gas-generation performance of the filaments were characterized, and the different combustion stages of the filaments were analyzed. The results show that the hollow filaments exhibit shorter unsteady combustion time and significantly increased steady flame propagation rate compared with solid filaments. For the hollow filaments of Al/CuO/F2311 formula (15 wt % of F2311), the unsteady combustion time is as low as 0.65 ms, and the steady flame propagation rate reaches 206.936 g/s. Thermal analysis and constant-volume combustion tests show that Al/CuO/F2311 formula provides the lowest thermal decomposition onset temperature (288 °C) and the best gas-generation performance (peak pressure: 0.191 MPa, pressurization rate: 12.337 MPa/s) compared with other composites.

Defect engineering in the photoelectrochemical (PEC) process of photoelectrodes has been extensively studied. But insufficient attention has been received about the impact of metal vacancies (V M ) in PEC process. Herein, the influence of Cu vacancies (V Cu ) on PEC performance of copper oxide (CuO) derived from Cu-based metal-organic gel (Cu-MOG) precursor was reported. It can be found that the presence of more V Cu can improve the PEC activity of CuO photocathode by facilitating the charge separation and transfer. Moreover, the as-prepared CuO was presented as a new PEC sensor to detect l -cysteine (L-Cys) on the basis of the excellent PEC performance, which showed high sensitivity and selectivity. Good linear response of L-Cys within the range of 0.1–6 μM was performed with a detection limit of 0.04 μM. This work not only provides insights into the role of V M in the PEC process of photocathodes, but also proved the high potential applicability of CuO as a PEC device for biomolecule detection.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been demonstrated as suitable metal sources and sacrificial templates for the preparation of porous transition-metal oxide nanomaterials. Herein, porous CuO micro-polyhedra assembled from numerous nanoparticles are synthesized simply by employing a Cu-based MOF as a precursor via a one-step calcination process under an air atmosphere. Benefitting from their high porosity and large specific surface area, porous CuO materials exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performances toward water oxidation in pH 9.2 KBi solution. A low catalytic onset potential at 1.05 V vs. NHE (NHE = normal hydrogen electrode) is obtained based on electrochemical measurements. A faradaic efficiency of nearly 98% and a stable catalytic current density of 2.2 mA cm−2 are achieved under an applied potential of 1.30 V vs. NHE over an electrolysis period of 10 h. In addition, based on the Tafel plot, the required overpotentials are only ∼410 mV and ∼510 mV for achieving the catalytic current densities of 0.1 mA cm−2 and 1.0 mA cm−2, respectively. The excellent performances make it an appealing candidate as a potential catalyst for green energy applications.

A simple and efficient strategy was developed to synthesize polyacrylonitrile-copper oxide (PAN-CuO) nanoflowers by growing copper oxide nanoneedles on the surface of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanoflowers under mild conditions. Fortunately, the obtained PAN-CuO nanoflowers exhibit excellent peroxidase-mimicking activity to catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to form a blue-colored solution with H2O2. The peroxidase-like mechanism originated from the generation of the •OH radical. The PAN-CuO-based colorimetric assay was used to detect H2O2 with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.12 μM in a linear range from 0.5 to 125 μM. The colorimetric method was simple, selective, and sensitive for ascorbic acid (AA) detection in the range of 1–180 μM with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.56 μM. Moreover, the proposed PAN-CuO-based colorimetric assay could be used in the real sample analysis. The peroxidase-like PAN-CuO nanoflowers could provide a versatile catalytic platform for the application of the colorimetric assay method and biomimetic enzyme catalytic systems, and open a new way for detection of AA in biological systems.

Regulating the surface charge of biochar is crucial for its catalytic performance and adsorption capability. Here, Cu 2+ and melamine (Me) modified pomegranate peel powder (Cu-Me-PP) was prepared by coordination self-assembly method using waste pomegranate peel as the raw material. Then, nano-CuO and N-graphite doped biochar (CuO-N-PC) with positively charged surfaces were successfully prepared by pyrolysis of Cu-Me-PP and valence state regulation. The CuO-N-PC-300/ peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system could completely degrade the chloroquine phosphate (CQ) antibiotic within 30 min. Moreover, the effects of catalyst dosage, PMS dosage, solution pH, CQ concentration, and coexisting ions on the degradation efficiency of CQ were studied. It was found that CuO-N-PC-300 could not only catalyze the degradation of CQ but also remove 86.8 % of the phosphorus in the solution via electrostatic adsorption. Zeta potential analyses and molecular electrostatic potential calculations revealed that the electrostatic adsorption between the positively charged biochar and PO 4 3− were the key factors for the recovery of phosphorus. Electrochemical analyses, quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests, and DFT calculations were employed to explore the potential activation mechanism of PMS. Both interfacial electron transfer and the Cu 2+ /Cu + redox reaction were important pathways for activating PMS, generating a large number of •OH and 1 O 2 during the degradation of CQ. Finally, two degradation pathways of CQ were proposed based on LC-MS analysis, and the ecological toxicity was evaluated. This work provided an efficient method for the activation of PMS and the recovery of phosphorus by constructing positively charged nano-CuO sites on the surface of biochar.
