A silica-based surface magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer for the selective recognition of parabens was prepared using a facile and general method that combined atom-transfer radical polymerization with surface imprinting technique. The prepared magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and physical property measurement. The isothermal adsorption experiment and kinetics adsorption experiment investigated the adsorption property of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer to template molecule. The four parabens including methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben were used to assess the rebinding selectivity. An extraction method, which used magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer as adsorbents coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography for the determination of the four parabens in fruit juice samples was developed. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detections of the four parabens were 0.028, 0.026, 0.021, and 0.026 mg/L, respectively. The precision expressed as relative standard deviation ranging from 2.6 to 8.9% was obtained. In all three fortified levels, recoveries of parabens were in the range of 72.5–89.4%. The proposed method has been applied to different fruit juice samples including orange juice, grape juice, apple juice and peach juice, and satisfactory results were obtained.

Fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) is become a serious problem in developing countries. Enzymolysis is a potentially useful method for the treatment of FVW. In the present study, novel recycled magnetic molecular imprinting immobilised cellulases were prepared based on magnetic modified chitosan (MCTS) and Fe 3 O 4 . The properties of obtained were characterised by IR and grain-size measurements. Evaluation of a single factor affecting the loading efficiency of supports and the mixed immobilised enzymes showed better capacity than single immobilised, or free, enzymes. The immobilisation process could improve cellulase stability and repeatability of the method. Meanwhile, the kinetic parameters were also verified. The immobilised enzymes retained most of their capacity after 60 days’ storage while free enzymes lost it within 30 days. Tests showed that the immobilised enzymes developed excellent capacity and five anthocyanins were collected.

Summary The content of bioactive phytochemicals, antioxidant activity and tyrosinase inhibitory activity of the hydroalcoholic extracts of Rosa roxburghii were determined. Yellow fruits of cultivated R. roxburghii showed the highest phenolic content (154.81 mg gallic acid g −1 ), and the green fruits of wild R. roxburghii showed higher content of flavonoid and triterpenoid. Rosa roxburghii fruits from different cultivars and maturity stages all demonstrated as good antioxidant agents and tyrosinase inhibitors, with IC50 value about twice of the positive standard in the DPPH assay and triple of the standard in the tyrosinase inhibitory activity assay. Nineteen compounds, mainly ellagic acids and its derivatives, flavonoids and their glycosides were identified by UPLC-Triple-TOF/MS analysis. As the first study of bioactive phytochemicals of R. roxburghii by UPLC-MS, the present research may provide valuable information for fulfilling the potential of R. roxburghii in the functional food area.

Previous studies have shown that polymethoxylated flavonoids-loaded citral emulsion (PCT) can inhibit the growth and reproduction of Penicillium in citrus; however, PCT is difficult to apply to fruit preservation due to its high fluidity and volatility. Therefore, in this study, we combined PCT with chitosan (CS) to investigate the effect of a composite coating on citrus preservation. The results showed that compared to the control group, the CS-PCT group could effectively reduce the decay rate and maintain moisture availability, color difference, and hardness. Moreover, the contents of nonenzymatic antioxidants and volatile substances with antimicrobial activity were better preserved. In addition, the activities of related antioxidant enzymes were greater in the treatment group, and the expression of the corresponding enzyme-encoding genes was upregulated. Consequently, CS-PCT treatment could effectively maintain fruit quality and improve the resistance of citrus fruits during storage; moreover, it can be considered a nontoxic and efficient citrus preservative.

Winter jujube is prone to rapid ripening and deterioration during postharvest storage and transportation. This study developed a multifunctional chitosan (CS) composite film incorporating dialdehyde cellulose nanocrystal (DCNC) and carbon dots (CDs) derived from walnut green husks. DCNC functioned as cross-linking filler, while CDs served as active nanofillers. The CS composite film containing 3 wt% DCNC and 3 wt% CDs (CS/DCNC/CDs-3 %) exhibited significant improvements in UV-blocking, mechanical strength, gas barrier, and thermal stability, attributing to the formation of a dense film structure and synergistic effect of Schiff base and hydrogen bonding interactions among film components. Notably, this composite film demonstrated a high CO 2 /O 2 selectivity of 14.1, facilitating the creation of an ideal atmosphere inside the package. This composite film exhibited remarkable antioxidant activity and displayed potent antibacterial capacity through photocatalytic ROS generation, achieving inhibition rates of 90.8 % against S. aureus and 86.8 % against E. coli . Additionally, this film showed favorable biosafety and biodegradability, addressing food safety and environmental concerns. Postharvest preservation tests confirmed that this film assisted by light exposure effectively regulated physiological metabolism and delayed the ripening of winter jujube, highlighting its potential as an active modified atmosphere packaging material for perishable fruit preservation.

Inspired by the citrus oil gland and cuticular wax, a multifunctional material that stably and continuously released the carvacrol and provided physical defenses was developed to address issues of fresh-cut fruits to microbial infestation and moisture loss. The results confirmed that low molecular weight and loose structure of starch nanoparticles prepared by the ultrasound-assisted Fenton system were preferable for octenyl succinic anhydride modification compared to native starch, achieving a higher degree of substitution (increased by 18.59 %), utilizing in preparing nanoemulsions (NEs) for encapsulating carvacrol (at 5 % level: 81.58 %). Furthermore, the NEs-based gelatin (G) film improved with surface hydrophobic modification by myristic acid (MA) successfully replicated the citrus oil gland and cuticular wax, providing superior antioxidant (enhanced by 3–4 times) and antimicrobial properties (95.99 % and 84.97 % against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli respectively), as well as the exceptional UV shielding (nearly 0 transmittance in the UV region), mechanical (72 % increase in tensile strength), and hydrophobic (WCA 133.63°). Moreover, the 5%NE-G@MA film inhibited foodborne microbial growth (reduced by 50 %) and water loss (controlled below 15 %), extending the shelf life of fresh-cut navel orange and kiwi. Thus, the multifunctional film was a potential shield for preserving perishable fresh-cut products.

Alternariol (AOH) is a metabolic product of Alternaria , which has various toxic effects on humans and animals and its pollution is increasingly being discovered in fruits, vegetables, and grains. At present, the detection of AOH is mainly achieved through high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and immunological methods. However, there is currently a lack of fast detection methods for on-site use. Considering the unique advantages of immunological testing methods, this study developed an immunolateral chromatographic quantitative method for detecting AOH using quantum dot fluorescent nanospheres (QDFNs) as signal amplification materials. The detection range of AOH is 5.2–4798 μg/kg, 50 % inhibiting concentration (IC 50 ) is 156.4 μg/kg, limit of detection (LOD) value is 2.32 μg/kg, and limit of quantification (LOQ) value is 6.96 μg/kg. The recovery rates of AOH in tomato and strawberry were 95.27%–111.63% and 88.43%–96.22%, respectively. In brief, the developed approach has good accuracy and repeatability and can be used for the detection of AOH.

Fruit is susceptible to various postharvest pathogens; thus, the development of multifunctional preservation materials that can achieve the broad-spectrum inhibition of different pathogens is a current research hotspot. Here, microfluidic blow spinning was used to create a biodegradable polycaprolactone/ethyl cellulose (PCL/EC) nanofibrous film that incorporated two naturally-sourced compounds, natamycin and trans -cinnamic acid, resulting in multi-microbial inhibition. The PCL/EC-based film had a smooth and even morphology, indicating the favorable integration of PCL and EC. After the incorporation of ingredients, the film exhibited good inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus , and Botrytis cinerea , and it had finer fiber diameters, higher permeability, and antioxidant properties. We further demonstrated that strawberries that were padded with the film had good resistance to Botrytis cinerea . Also, the film did not interference with the qualities of the strawberries during storage. The study demonstrates a promising application for multi-antimicrobial and bio-friendly packaging materials in postharvest fruit preservation.

The unripe fruit of the plant Momordica charantia L., commonly known as bitter gourd or bitter melon, is a popular vegetable and medical herb in many parts of the world and is characterized by its strong bitter taste. In our endeavor to decode its bitter taste, the dichloromethane fraction of 75% methanol extract of bitter gourd was found to be intensely bitter. Combining sensory analysis-guided fractionation and newly developed comparative high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis-guided purification led to the isolation of five known compounds including momordicoside L (1), (23E)-3β-O-malonyl-7β,25-dihydroxycucurbita-5,23-dien-19-al (2), 3-O-β-d-allopyranosyl-7β,25-dihydroxycucurbita-5,23(E)-dien-19-al (3), momordicine IV (5), and charantoside B (6) and three new compounds 3-O-β-d-3-ketoglucopyranosly-7β,25-dihydroxycucurbita-5,23(E)-dien-19-al (4), 6′-O-malonylmomordicoside L (7), and 6′-O-malonylmomordicine IV (8) from bitter gourd. Sensory analysis revealed compounds 3–8 had strong bitter taste with their bitter taste recognition thresholds in the range between 3.6 (4) and 13.6 ppm (6) in 3% ethanol. UPLC-MS/MS quantification showed that their concentration in bitter gourd ranged from 16.5 ± 1.3 mg/kg (4) to 214.8 ± 14.0 mg/kg (6) on a dry weight basis. Calculation of the dose-over-threshold (DoT) factor showed that momordicine IV (5) and charantoside B (6) should be considered as bitter principles of bitter gourd. In addition, the study also demonstrated the ubiquity of the isomerization reaction in the side chain of cucurbitane-type triterpenoids. Many isolated compounds were the isomerized products of their natural precursors, and these precursors should be the primary bitterness contributors of fresh fruits. In addition, comparative HPLC analysis-guided purification could be a practical approach for the fast isolation of acid-labile precursors.

Biomass serves as a crucial source of renewable energy and potential raw materials for synthesizing various value-added chemicals. This study explored the direct conversion of the cellulose of passion fruit shells into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a promising substitute for fossil-derived compounds, by combining halogenated metal ionic liquids (ILs) and organic acids through one-pot hydrothermal reaction. Factors such as the type of ILs and organic acids, reaction time and temperature, as well as the quantity of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the solvent, and the loading of substrate, IL, and organic acid were investigated for their impact on 5-HMF yield. Optimization of reaction conditions led to the attainment of the highest 5-HMF yield, reaching 33.1 ± 0.34 % based on the cellulose content within the passion fruit shell. Furthermore, the structural and morphological changes of the solid residues were analysed through techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). These analyses revealed the progressive conversion of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, accompanied by the formation of humin by-products. This integrated approach for 5-HMF production from agricultural waste introduced novel possibilities for transforming sustainable biomass resources into valuable chemical products.

Polygonatum a widely recognized medicinal and edible plant, exhibits several confirmed biological activities and holds significant market potential. Numerous studies have identified polysaccharides are one of the primary bioactive components in the rhizomes of Polygonatum . Our previous research identified a notable presence of fructo-oligosaccharides in the rhizomes of Polygonatum sibiricum , highlighting its largely overlooked potential as a natural source of bioactive compounds. Therefore, a more systematic and comprehensive analysis of water-soluble carbohydrates across different species and plant parts of Polygonatum is essential. The aim of this study was to investigate the carbohydrate composition in four different Polygonatum species, focusing on the rhizomes, roots, leaves, stems, and fruits. In particular, we utilized a self-established method for the determination of fructo-oligosaccharides. The results indicated the presence of small amounts of mono/disaccharides and polysaccharides, as well as a considerable quantity of fructo-oligosaccharides in rhizome, root, fruit of Polygonatum . The low-molecular-weight glycans was the predominant carbohydrate in the rhizomes of Polygonatum Mill. spp., comprising over 80% of the total soluble carbohydrates, with polysaccharides contributing approximately 11%, and mono/disaccharides less than 10%. Our study offers valuable insights and a meaningful basis for the excavation of the functional carbohydrate resources of the Polygonatum Mill.

Chilling injury (CI) is a bottleneck factor constraining the refrigeration and cold chain logistics of mango fruit. Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is an important phytohormone that can regulate multiple abiotic stresses. This study evaluated the potential effects of MeJA on CI in ‘Guifei’ mango fruit stored at 4 °C and its underlying mechanisms involved in the regulation of antioxidation and energy status. The application of 50 µM MeJA mitigated CI symptoms and improved ripening-related quality during refrigeration, as indicated by a lowered CI index, retarded declines in chlorophyll fluorescence ( Fv/Fm ) and chromaticity L * and advanced color transformation (from green to yellow), softening and accumulation of soluble solids. MeJA treatment repressed the increases in relative conductivity (RC), malondialdehyde (MDA) content and reactive oxygen species (ROS) (O 2 -. and H 2 O 2 ). Reduced ROS generation in MeJA-treated fruit was a consequence of the enhancement of antioxidant enzyme activities , including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR). Ultrastructural observation revealed that MeJA treatment protected mitochondrial structure. MeJA treatment promoted intracellular energy synthesis and utilization, as indicated by increments in intracellular adenosine triphosphate (iATP) level, activities of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH), α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (α-KGDH), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), cytochrome C oxidase (CCO), H + -ATPase and Ca 2+ -ATPase as well as contents of reduced coenzymes (NADH and FADH 2 ). In addition, the expression levels of genes ( MiAPYs , MiENTs , MiPUPs and MiAPRTs ) related to extracellular ATP (eATP) hydrolysis, eATP transport and iATP regeneration were upregulated in response to MeJA, contributing to maintenance of eATP/iATP homeostasis . These findings suggest that MeJA could reinforce cold tolerance in mango fruit by inhibiting oxidative stress and promoting energy metabolism.
