Efficient separation of propylene/propane (C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 ) is an imperative and extremely challenging process in the petrochemical industry due to their similar physicochemical characters. Known tactics mainly concentrate on unilateral thermodynamic or kinetic driven. Here, we report the efficient separation of C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 through cooperative equilibrium-kinetic synergetic effect in a nodes-engineered Zr-MOF scaffold (1to). The grafted -CF 3 motif with different isomers and resultant aperture chemistry awards 1to a late-model paradigm for efficient separation of C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 . Detailly, confined -CF 3 group having the role of H-bonding acceptor can result in improved adsorption enthalpy ( Q st ) of 38.1 kJ mol −1 , ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) selectivity of 80 and experimental selectivity of 25, respectively, indicating a marked thermodynamic driven for trapping C 3 H 6 . Besides, the contracted cross-sectional size and eligible pore shape of 1to could be judiciously adjusted through rationally engineering the pore microenvironment, yielding a topmost simulated diffusion selectivity of 408, which was 40.8 times higher than that of the pristine 1 example (10), effectively enabling the swift diffusion behavior of C 3 H 6 . Modeling simulations and breakthrough experiments confirmed the excellent C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation performance of 1to. This work successfully developed a novel nodes-engineered strategy for C 3 H 6 capture through equilibrium-kinetic synergetic effect, anticipating to set a new benchmark for gas separation and affording constructive guidance for tailoring delicate aperture chemistry.

DNA templated dye assemblies pave an easy way to regulate the optical properties of molecular aggregates. G-quadruplexes (G4s) provide versatile DNA platforms for the dye assemblies since their foldings can be easily tuned by cation ions and sequences. In this work, we found that the G4 handedness can be used to control the aggregate chirality of a dye of 3,3′-diethylthiacarbocyanine (DiSC 2 (3)). The left-handed and right-handed G4s can template the concurrent formation of the J- and H-aggregates of DiSC 2 (3) with emergence of the featured absorption spectra. However, the chiral J-aggregate of DiSC 2 (3) can be formed only on the left-handed G4s, while the chiral H-aggregate is otherwise grown only on the right-handed G4s, as confirmed by the induced circular dichroism (ICD) spectra with the characteristic splitting bands. Additionally, these G4s even at tens of nM level are efficient to produce these chiral aggregates, demonstrating the high sensitivity of G4s in creating these optically active dye assemblies. The possible growth sites of the aggregates are proposed by the sequence length-dependent assemblies. Our work will provide a new way to control the chiral assemblies of dye aggregates via the G4 handedness.

The filler effect is the most important physical mechanism of mineral admixtures in the early hydration of cement whose chemical properties greatly affect the precipitation of C–S–H. In this study, calcite, strontianite, magnesite, dolomite, quartz, whewellite and whitlockite were selected as the fillers. The morphology and reaction kinetics of synthetic C–S–H precipitated on the surfaces of different fillers were studied via electron microscopy observations and electrical conductivity and ion concentration measurements. The precipitation rate of C–S–H has a positive correlation with the affinity of Ca 2+ for adsorption on the fillers, which can be explained by the nucleation barrier of C–S–H. Extremely ordered honeycomb-like morphology of the C–S–H is found on calcite and strontianite surfaces, while less regular leaf-like or honeycomb-like C–S–H is found on whewellite and whitlockite. The ordered C–S–H pattern is related to the lattice cleavage of the ionic compound filler. In the case of quartz, C–S–H prefers growth along the tangential direction, which is quite different from the normal-direction growth on ionic compounds. The in-plane growth of C–S–H on quartz is believed to be induced by a layer of loosely physically adsorbed Ca 2+ .

To introduce intramolecular hydrogen bonds in the polyimides (PIs), 5(6)-amino-2-(5-aminopyridin-2-yl)-benzimidazole (PyPABZ) were designed and synthesized. The intramolecular interaction was indicated by Fourier transform infrared when different copolyimides were prepared with 4,4′-oxydianiline and PyPABZ. These modified poly(benzimidazole imide)s eliminate the problem of high water absorption for benzimidazole (BI)-containing PIs in the materials applications. Moreover, the high packing coefficient and rigidity of these copolyimides caused by the strong intramolecular interaction from the H-bonding and the resulting PIs exhibited outstanding thermal properties such as high glass-transition temperature ( T g ) and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Graphical The polyimides derived from 5(6)-amino-2-(5-aminopyridin-2-yl)-benzimidazole (PIs–PyPABZ) were achieved with the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding. These modified co-poly(benzimidazole imide)s exhibited lower H 2 O-absorption and higher thermal properties depending on the intramolecular H-bonding content.

The molecular design and regulation has shown bright future for constructing smart molecular materials such as ferroelectrics, dielectric switches, electro-optic effect, and so forth. Here, by poly-H/F substitution in a simple organic-inorganic hybrid 2[CH2FCH2NH3]·[CdCl4], 1 (CH2FCH2NH3 = fluorine ethylamine cation), we obtained two novel hybrids, namely, 2[CHF2CH2NH3]·[CdCl4], 2 (CHF2CH2NH3 = 2,2′-difluorine ethylamine cation) and 2[CF3CH2NH3]·[CdCl4], 3 (CF3CH2NH3 = 2,2′,2″-trifluorine ethylamine cation). Further investigations show that compounds 1, 2, and 3 experience solid reversible phase transitions with temperatures at 294, 319, and 329 K respectively. These unique phase transitions were confirmed by their remarkable dielectric and heat anomalies around the phase transition temperatures. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analyses before and after the phase transitions show that the order–disorder motions of F atoms and the twist motions from the 2D [CdCl4]2– framework lead to these solid reversible phase transitions. Also, the Hirshfeld surface calculation of compounds 1, 2, and 3 suggests that the increasing ratio of the F···F interaction from the intermolecular interaction makes a major contribution for the substantial increase of their phase transition temperatures.

A bridging group is an indispensable element for the preparation of diphenol-based benzoxazines, and inevitably, its electronic features will affect the H-bond formation of obtained benzoxazine, which is a crucial factor that not only makes a difference on curing behaviors of benzoxazine but also poses significant influence on the performances of cured resins. However, systematical investigation about the effects of the bridging group on the H bonds in benzoxazine is still in a barren state. Herein, we bridge the gap with three high-purity model benzoxazine monomers. The results showed that electron-donating bridge groups made the benzoxazine monomers tend to start the curing reaction earlier, whereas the electron-withdrawing bridging groups had the opposite effect. In addition, it was also confirmed that the H bonds in polybenzoxazine could be readily tailored by carefully selecting the bridge groups of aromatic diphenols. In this work, some basic characteristics about benzoxazine have been revealed, which are helpful for us to understand its structure–properties relationship more deeply.

A new method of the catalytic alcoholysis of Dioscorea zingiberensis C. H. Wright into diosgenin by magnetic solid acid in a Teflon-lined stainless-steel autoclave for the first time. The magnetic solid acid, Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –SO 3 H, was prepared by the connecting the –SO 3 H groups on the surface of SiO 2 encapsulated Fe 3 O 4 microspheres . The synthesized catalysts were systematically analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), temperature programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and transmission electron microscope-mapping(TEM-mapping). To obtain the best conditions for the alcoholysis of Dioscorea zingiberensis C. H. Wright, single factor test was first utilized to determine the range of optimal conditions and optimized by response surface method . A three-level-three-factor Box-Behnken design was adopted to illustrate the effect of solid acid mass, solvent volume, reaction time and temperature on the yield of diosgenin. The optimum conditions obtained by response surface methodology were: 0.42 g Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 –SO 3 H, 4.38 mL solvent of ethanol, the reaction temperature at 100 °C and 6.09 h reaction time. At the optimal conditions, this method can reach the highest yield 2.64% from Dioscorea zingiberensis C. H. Wright. The yield of the new method was 21.66% higher than conventional sulfuric acid hydrolysis based on the analysis results of UV and HPLC. Importantly, the catalysts and solvents used in the alcoholysis process by the solid acid can be recovered, which is green and environmentally friendly, indicating that the catalytic alcoholysis with magnetic solid acid under hydrothermal conditions had a broad application prospect in diosgenin production.

CuS/CdS(H)/CdS(C) photocatalysts were synthesized via the hydrothermal method by employing thiourea , Cd(CH 3 COO) 2 ·3H 2 O and copper 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate MOF (CuBDC). The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD , XPS , BET, TEM and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra. Interestingly, hexagonal CdS (CdS(H)) and cubic CdS (CdS(C)) were formed with phase junctions in one step when CuBDC was introduced in the synthesis process, in addition, CuS nanoparticles were deposited on CdS. However, only hexagonal CdS was obtained without CuBDC. It demonstrated that CuBDC was not only the precursor of CuS but also the structural modifier for CdS. With the reduction of re-combination of photo-induced electrons and holes caused by phase junctions and the enhancement of visible-light absorptions due to the loading of CuS, all CuS/CdS(H)/CdS(C) photocatalysts had higher photocurrent densities under visible-light irradiation, and consequently the higher rates of H 2 production than pure CdS(H). Typically, the catalyst with 2.89 wt% of Cu showed a highest rate of H 2 evolution at 2042 μmol/g/h.

The pulley structure has been widely employed to improve mechanical properties. Polyrotaxane-based waterborne polyurethane (WPU) typically exhibits good tensile strength and Young's modulus. However, achieving outstanding self-healability of polyrotaxane-based WPU under mild conditions generally proves insufficient solely relying on host-guest interactions. Herein, a strategy that constructs a triple synergy of host-guest interaction, hydrogen bonds, and metal coordination bonds by sequentially introducing tannic acid (TA) and Fe 3+ is proposed to prepare polyrotaxane-based WPU with excellent mechanical performance and high self-healable capability. Besides the reversible non-covalent bonding contributing to intrinsic self-healing, the unique sliding motion of WPU's molecule chain acts as a driving force, promoting efficient contact among reversible bonds. Notably, benefiting from the sliding motion of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) along a chain, the dynamic reconstruction of hydrogen bonds and metal coordination bonds, the resulting supramolecular WPU exhibited a tensile strength of 46.05 MPa and a toughness of 130.30 MPa, with satisfactory self-healing performance (tensile strength healing efficiency of more than 95%). This work enriches the self-healing mechanism and expands the concepts for the design of resilient self-healing environmentally friendly supramolecular WPU.

Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) hold great promise as a photocatalyst for generating hydrogen energy via water splitting, owing to its remarkable ability to respond to visible light and its strong reduction capacity. However, the photocatalytic water splitting for H 2 evolution performance of pure CN was impeded by its low surface area, inadequate hydrophilicity, and unsatisfactory photoelectric conversion efficiency. Here we tackled these challenges by synthesizing a series of CN/H-ZSM-5 composites with varying amount of H-ZSM-5 zeolite using a straightforward thermal copolymerization method. The contact angle and N 2 adsorption-desorption measurements confirmed that the incorporated hydrophilic and porous H-ZSM-5 zeolite contribute to increased surface area and improved hydrophilicity of the CN/H-ZSM-5 composites. Meanwhile the resulting CN/H-ZSM-5 composites exhibited significant separation and migration enhancement of photoexcited charge carriers. Consequently, the optimized CN/H-ZSM-5 composite, containing 50 mg of H-ZSM-5 zeolite, demonstrated 13 times increase in photocatalytic H 2 production rate than that of pure CN. This work not only provided a competitively universal approach on the design of high-efficiency CN based photocatalyst, but also clarified the role of H-ZSM-5 zeolite in the H 2 evolution enhancement.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have great potential for producing photoelectrocatalyzed hydrogen and degrading pollutants, owing to several factors such as high porosity and tunable semiconductor-like properties. Wide band gaps, which restrict their use to only UV light induced reactions, and low efficiencies for the separation of photogenerated charge carriers (electrons and holes) pose significant challenges to the widespread applications of MOFs. In this study, a hierarchical hollow Pt@H-UiO-66-NH2/CdS ternary catalyst was designed and synthesized. The immobilized CdS nanoparticles (NPs) in this catalyst endow the MOF H-UiO-66-NH2 with high visible light absorption ability and the Pt NPs serve as electron sinks to improve charge carrier separation. Furthermore, the hierarchical hollow structure of H-UiO-66-NH2 in the composite contributes to boosting light absorption and shortening the distance for charge transfer. As a proof of principle, Pt@H-UiO-66-NH2/CdS catalyzes methylene blue (MB) degradation with a high rate constant of 1.025 × 10−2 and hydrogen production with a rate of 12 810 μmol g−1 h−1, the latter of which is about 2.3, 11.7 and 173 times higher than those of Pt@UiO-66-NH2/CdS, H-UiO-66-NH2/CdS and Pt@H-UiO-66-NH2, respectively.

Large size high density h-BN/ZrO 2 composites (ø = 110 mm, h = 15 mm) were rapidly prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) with sintering cycle 20 min. The effects of additives on the mechanical properties , microstructure evolution, and corrosion resistance of the h-BN/ZrO 2 composites were studied. The Al 2 O 3 , MgO , SiO 2 , La 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 rapidly formed heterogeneous eutectic crystals under the action of SPS. The low eutectic compounds significantly promoted the diffusion of h-BN or ZrO 2 , also increased the density. The flexural strength of h-BN/ZrO 2 composites could reach 196.31 MPa, and the apparent porosity was only 0.42 %. The additives are combined with zirconia to form a high viscosity eutectic, whose corrosion resistance to molten steel is obviously better than that of single ZrO 2 . The corrosion depth of h-BN/ZrO 2 composites was only 114 µm after corroded in molten steel at 1550 °C for 80 min. The comprehensive properties of h-BN/ZrO 2 composites were obviously improved by appropriate additives.
