The intermolecular interactions and overall charge distribution of curcumin were respectively investigated by using Hirshfeld surface analysis and molecular electrostatic potential surface. The mole fraction solubility magnitudes of curcumin (I) in aprotic co-solvent blends of DMSO + water, acetone + water and acetonitrile + water ranging from 278.15 to 318.15 (333.15) K under 101.1 kPa was obtained by means of shake-flask method. Under the same conditions, e.g. identical temperature and mass fraction of DMSO (acetone or acetonitrile), the equilibrium solubility of curcumin was greater in DMSO + water blends than in acetone/acetonitrile + water blends. The lowest solubility magnitude was found in neat water at 278.15 K; and the highest one, in acetone/acetonitrile at temperature of T = 318.15 K (aqueous solutions of acetone or acetonitrile) or 333.15 K (aqueous solutions of DMSO). No crystal transition and solvate formation occurred in experimental processes as documented through X-ray power diffraction analysis. The acquired data were correlated by means of the Jouyban-Acree model, Apelblat model and modified van’t Hoff-Jouyban–Acree model. The preferential solvation at 298.15 K was investigated by the approach of inverse Kirkwood–Buff integrals. The parameters of preferential solvation for DMSO, acetone or acetonitrile were positive in the above three blends with middle and DMSO/acetone/acetonitrile-rich composition ranges, which specified that preferential solvation of curcumin was made by co-solvent. The extended Hildebrand solubility approach was further employed to describe the mole fraction solubility at 298.15 K in DMSO/acetone/acetonitrile + water blends studied in the current work and in ethanol/ n -propanol/isopropanol/PG + water blends reported previous by us, obtaining average relative deviations < 5.21%.

Developing efficient materials for the extraction of gold(I) was pivotal for application of ammoniacal thiosulfate leaching technology. Mn-doped molybdenum disulfide (Mn-MoS2) spheres were fabricated by a facile hydrothermal route for photocatalytic reduction of the gold(I) thiosulfate complex ([Au(S2O3)2]3–) in this work. The experimental results exhibited that [Au(S2O3)2]3– was efficiently recycled in the form of gold nanoparticles by Mn-MoS2. The reduction capacity (936.9 mg/g) and rate (2.74 mg/(g min) in 300 min) was 1.5 and 2.72 times higher than that of MoS2, respectively. The inside photocatalytic reduction mechanism was studied by combining an experimental and first-principles approach. Outstanding reduction performance of [Au(S2O3)2]3– was attributed to the enhanced transfer of photoinduced electrons after Mn doping. In addition, S atoms in the Mn-S bond could well interact with Au(I), which slightly promoted the adsorption of [Au(S2O3)2]3– on Mn-MoS2. The discovery provided a promising strategy for the efficient extraction of gold(I) from thiosulfate leaching solutions.

The stability of perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) plays a vital role in practical devices. Besides silica coating, embedding PQDs in zeolites is another strategy to improve their stability significantly. Although the zeolite rigid framework has been reported to protect PQDs, there are few reports on the in situ synthesis of PQDs in zeolites. In this work, cubic phase CsPbX3 (X = Br, I) nanocrystals were successfully prepared by the ion exchange method combined with a non-polar organic trigger. Dropping a certain amount of ZnM2 (M = Br, I) solution into the intermediate product Cs4PbCl6 nanocrystals resulted in the formation of the final CsPbX3 nanocrystals. The ZnM2 solutions were prepared in non-polar solvents (hexane, octane, or chloroform). The highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the synthesized CsPbX3@zeolite composites can reach 83%, with a lifetime of 1.37 μs. The stability of the CsPbX3@zeolite composites thin film against damage from air and light is significantly improved. We fabricated white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) using CsPbBr3@zeolite as the green light source and CsPbI3@zeolite as the red light source to further emphasize the practical application effect of the CsPbX3@zeolite composites. This work not only provides a new method for the synthesis of CsPbX3 nanocrystals but also involves the in situ synthesis of high stability CsPbX3@zeolite composites within the zeolite.

Cardiac Troponin I (cTnI) is a preferred biomarker to diagnose acute myocardial infarction which is one of the leading risks to health globally due to its short term. However, clinical analyzers are difficult to achieve its on-site quantitative detection. A novel label-free aptasensor was constructed to realize ultrasensitive and rapid recognition of cTnI. A nanocubic AuNPs/In 2 O 3 composite was designed to provide synergistic effects of abundant active sites and signal magnification for aptamers grafting. Relying on a conductance-dependence strategy, this aptasensor can achieve the quantitative detection within 10 min, which is much faster than state-of-the-art analyzers, as well as exhibiting an ultrawide linear range of 0.1–1000 ng/mL and a low detection limit of 0.06 ng/mL with an excellent selectivity in the analysis of human serum.

A gold nanoparticle (AuNP)–based sensing strategy based on rapid reduction of Au(I→0) is proposed. As a proof-of-concept study, the proposed sensing principle is designed for simultaneous and colorimetric detection and discrimination of multiple proteins. In the presence of H 2 O 2 , the target proteins could reduce Au(I) (i.e. HAuCl 2 ) to AuNPs with different sizes, shapes and dispersion/aggregation states, thus resulting in rapidly colorimetric identification of different proteins. The optical response (i.e. color) of AuNPs is found to be characteristic of a given protein. The color response patterns are characteristic for each protein and can be quantitatively differentiated by statistical techniques. The sensor array is capable of discriminating proteins at concentrations as low as 0.1 μg/mL with high accuracy. A linear relationship was observed between the total Euclidean distances and protein concentration, providing the potential for protein quantification using this sensor array. The limit of detection (LOD) for catalase (Cat) is 0.08 μg/mL. The good linear range (from 0 to 8 μg/mL) has been used for the quantitative assay of Cat. To show a potentially practical application, this method was used to detect and discriminate proteins in human urine and tear samples.
We report a facile gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-based sensing strategy, that is, "a rapid reduction of Au(I) to Au(0) nanoparticles with different sizes and shapes by analytes that having certain reducing capabilities, resulting in different colours." The proposed sensing principle is designed for simultaneous, colorimetric detection and discrimination of multiple proteins.

Elimination of antibiotics such as tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) from wastewater is of great significance, but still faces challenges. Herein, for the first time, I and P co-doped TiO 2 catalysts were prepared via a hydrolysis method. We also reported a simple method to prepare I and P co-doped TiO 2 photoelectrodes, which exhibited preeminent photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) performance for the decomposition of TC. The synergistic effect of I and P co-doping could significantly improve the charge separation rate and enhance the light absorption capacity of TiO 2 , leading to an enhancement of PEC activity. The main factors affecting the PEC performance were investigated, and the highest degradation rate constant (4.20 × 10 −2 min −1 ) was achieved when the doping content of P was 4 at% (ITP-4 photoelectrode) at pH 11.02 under visible light. The Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model and active species trapping experiments were selected to investigate the degradation mechanism of TC. The results suggest that the hydroxyl radicals and photogenerated holes were the main active species that were responsible for the decomposition of TC. Moreover, the degradation pathways of TC based on the intermediates also demonstrated that the hydroxyl radicals and holes showed a principal role in degrading TC.

Currently, high optical purity, perfect stability, and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) are very important, being the key to obtain high-quality luminescent materials. The research of perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) as optical materials is in full swing. Nevertheless, the low PLQY value, especially for the red-emitting perovskite NCs, is a main obstacle to applications in display. This work reports the optimized components to synthesize CsPb(Br/I) 3 NCs glasses whose PLQY achieves a big boost from 15.4% to ≈ 60% for the first time. Furthermore, the specimens exhibit exceptional tolerance to water and thermal and hence contribute to applicability in high-performance light-emitting diode (LED) and 3D printing. By combining CsPb(Br/I) 3 NCs glass powder and yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG):Ce phosphor with blue chips, the assembled white LEDs reach a high luminous efficiency at 113.0 lm W −1 . The resulting high PLQY is to the benefit of a substantial step toward the practical application of inorganic perovskite materials in the fields of optoelectronic devices and additive manufacturing.

The infrared spectrum (IR) characteristic peaks of amide I, amide II, and amide III bands are marked as amide or peptide characteristic peaks. Through the nuclear magnetic resonance study, N-methylacetamide has been determined to have six fine components, which include protonation, hydration, and hydroxy structures. Then the independent IR spectrum of every component in N-methylacetamide is calculated by using the density functional theory quantum chemistry method, and the contribution of each component to amide I, II, and III bands is analyzed. The results of this research can help to explain the formation of the amide infrared spectrum, which has positive significance in organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and chemical biology.

Reconstituted high density lipoprotein (rHDL) has been regarded as a promising brain-targeting vehicle for anti-glioma drugs under the mediation of apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I). However, some stability issues relating to drug leakage and consequent reduced targeting efficiency in the course of discoidal rHDL (d-rHDL) circulating in blood hinder its broad application. The objective of the study was to develop a novel stabilized d-rHDL by replacing cholesterol and apoA-I with mono-cholesterol glutarate (MCG) modified apoA-I (termed as mA) and to evaluate its allosteric behavior and glioma targeting. MCG was synthesized through esterifying the hydroxyl of cholesterol with glutaric anhydride and characterized by FI-IR and 1H NMR. d-rHDL assembled with mA (termed as m-d-rHDL) presented similar properties such as minute particle size and disk-like appearance resembling nascent HDL. Morphological transformation observation and in vitro release plots convinced that the modification of cholesterol could effectively inhibit the remolding of d-rHDL. The uptake of m-d-rHDL by LCAT-pretreated bEND.3 cells was significantly higher than that of d-rHDL, thereby serving as another proof for the capability of m-d-rHDL in enhancing targeting property. Besides, apoA-I anchoring into m-d-rHDL played a critical role in the endocytosis process into bEND.3 cells and C6 cells, which implied the possibility of traversing blood brain barrier and accumulating in the brain and glioma. These results suggested that the modification toward cholesterol to improve the stability of d-rHDL is advantageous, and that this obtained m-d-rHDL revealed great potential for realization of suppressing the remolding of d-rHDL in the brain-targeted treatment of glioma for drug delivery.

Cold-adapted pullulanase with high catalytic activity and stability is of special interest for its wide application in cold starch hydrolysis, but few pullulanases displaying excellent characteristics at ambient temperature and acidic pH have hitherto been reported. Here, a novel pullulanase from Bacillus methanolicus PB1 was successfully expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) and determined to be a cold-adapted type I pullulanase (PulPB1) with maximum activity at 50 °C and pH 5.5. The recombinant PulPB1 showed great stability, its half-life at 50 °C was 137 h. PulPB1 can efficiently hydrolyze pullulan and amylopectin, with activities of 292 and 184 U/mg at 50 °C and pH 5.5, respectively. Moreover, the N-terminal domain of PulPB1 was found to significantly affect the enzymatic performance. Following truncation of the N-terminal domain, the activity towards pullulan decreased markedly from 292 to 141 U/mg and the half-life at 50 °C decreased from 137 to 10 h. Compared to the hydrolysis system with amyloglucosidase alone, the catalytic efficiency showed a 2.4-fold increase on combining PulPB1 with amyloglucosidase for amylopectin hydrolysis at 40 °C. This demonstrates that PulPB1 is promising for development as a superior candidate for cold amylopectin hydrolysis.

The photoluminescence (PL) of doped ions is depended strongly on the position of the ion in the substrate. Ion doping endows semiconductor nanocrystals with novel properties. In this paper, Mn:CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 nanocrystals (NCs) with different halogen ratios were obtained by one-pot hot injection synthesis and halogen ion exchange. The emission of Mn 2+ from 4 T 1g - 6 A 1g d-d transition was observed in the case of changing the molar ratio of Cl/Br for Mn:CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 NCs. In the case of a Cl/Br ratio of 4/1, the PL peak of perovskite became weak and Mn 2+ emission was enhanced. After I − ion exchange, the emission of Mn 2+ was observed in Mn:CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 with Cl/Br ratio of 1/4, in which the PL efficiency of the nanocrystals reached 55.74%. Thus, Cl − ions increase the band gap and effectively promote the emission of Mn 2+ . At the same time, the morphology of the samples after ion exchange always remains cube. The lifetimes of the nanocrystals were short aged with increasing Cl − ions and prolonged with increasing I − ions. Because these Mn:CsPbX 3 (x = Cl, Br, I) NCs with different halogen ratios revealed highly stabile blue to red emission, the nanocrystals would be utilizable for further applications.

Halogenated dipeptides, 3, 5-di-I-tyrosylalanine (DIYA), have been identified as novel disinfection byproducts (DBPs), following chloramination of authentic water. However, little is known about their toxicity. Zebrafish embryos were used to assess the toxicity of novel iodinated DBPs (I-DBPs). Although DIYA did not exhibit high acute toxicity to embryonic zebrafish (LC 50 > 2 mM), it significantly inhibited pigmentation of melanophores and xanthophores on head, trunk and tail at 500 μM as determined by photographic analysis. Whereas N-phenylthiourea (PTU) as a pigment inhibitor did not inhibit development of yellow pigments. Colorimetric detection of melanin further confirmed these results. Quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) measurements indicated that genes ( dct , slc24a5 , tyr , tyrp1a , tyrp1b , silva ) associated with the melanogenesis pathway were dramatically down-regulated following exposure to 500 μM DIYA. In addition, enzymatic activity of tyrosinase (TYR) decreased, also demonstrating that the underlying mechanism of hypopigmentation was attributed to the disruption of melanogenesis pathway. Transcription levels of xanthophore genes ( gch2 , bnc2 , csf1a , csf1b , pax7a and pax7b ) were also monitored by qRT-PCR assay. DIYA exposure up-regulated expression of gch2 and bnc2 , but not csf1 and pax7 . Tested DIYA analogues, brominated tyrosine was unlikely to inhibit pigmentation, indicating that the iodine substitution and dipeptides structure are of important structural feature for the inhibition of pigmentation. In this study, we observed that DIYA inhibited melanogenesis related genes, which might contribute to pigmentation defects. Moreover, as an emerging I-DBPs, the developmental toxicity of aromatic dipeptides should be further studied.
