Sustainable synthesis of modulated Fe-MOFs with enhanced catalyst performance for persulfate to degrade organic pollutants

Yongjie Wan,Jinquan Wan,Yongwen Ma,Yan Wang,Ting Luo

In this study, four typical modulators (NH 4 OH(A), CH 3 COOH(B), CH 3 COONa(C) and CH 3 COONH 4 (D)) were applied to modulate the microwave-assisted synthesis of Fe-MOFs. The effects of various modulators on the yield, electrochemistry activity and PS activation capacity of prepared catalysts were systematically investigated. The ideal modulator was revealed as the 7.5 mM CH 3 COONH 4 . Contributed by the defects caused by the dual effects of CH 3 COONH 4 , Fe-MOFs-D-7.5/PS system showed excellent orange G (OG) degradation with high reaction stoichiometric efficiency (RSE) and desirable recycling performance. The main radicals should be SO 4 ·− and O 2 ·− which were confirmed by EPR and chemical quenchers. Furthermore, the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory and dual descriptor (DD) method were employed in predicting radical attacking sites of OG. According to the results of theoretical computations and experimental detection, degradation pathways of OG in Fe-MOFs-D-7.5/PS system were proposed. Similar to the function of the battery, this study gives new insight into the possible mediatory roles of Fe-MOFs-D-7.5 in PS activation by transferring the electrons between PS and the unsaturated metal sites (CUS). The Fe-MOFs-D-7.5/PS system is a promising process for environmental remediation.

Kun Wang,Xiaobing Huang,Tao Zhou,Haiyan Wang,Huasheng Xie,Yurong Ren

Li 2 FeSiO 4 /C cathode composites were fabricated from a simple solid-state approach using precursor Fe-MOFs prepared by hydrothermal process. The Li 2 FeSiO 4 /C composites covered by carbon film with diverse contents were characterized using XRD , SEM , galvanostatic charge-discharge measurement and EIS, and so on. Results of the investigation prove that Li 2 FeSiO 4 /C composites with 19.3 wt % carbon layer present prominent electrochemical capability, which delivered the discharge capacity of 154, 138, 129, 117 and 100 mA h g −1  at 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2 and 5 C, respectively. After 100 cycles, discharge capacity retained 97.4% compared to the original value at 2 C. Furthermore, it possesses the lowest charge transfer resistance as well as the highest Li + diffusion coefficient , attributing to uniform carbon coating and porous structure for Li 2 FeSiO 4 /C composites.

In situ synthesis of sandwich MOFs on reduced graphene oxide for electrochemical sensing of dihydroxybenzene isomers

Zhuo Ye,Qingwei Wang,Jiantong Qiao,Yuanyuan Xu,Gaiping Li

A novel type of sandwich MOF was successfully synthesized on reduced graphene oxide (denoted as M@Pt@M-rGO) by an in situ synthesis method. The obtained M@Pt@M-rGO possesses excellent electrochemical properties. The surface morphology and structure of M@Pt@M-rGO were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), etc. By using M@Pt@M-rGO, a novel electrochemical sensor was constructed and successfully used for the simultaneous and sensitive detection of three isomers: hydroquinone (HQ), catechol (CT) and resorcinol (RS), with wider linear ranges of concentrations of 0.05–200 μM, 0.1–160 μM and 0.4–300 μM and lower detection limits of 0.015 μM, 0.032 μM and 0.133 μM (S/N = 3) for HQ, CT and RS, respectively. Besides, the proposed electrochemical sensor showed excellent anti-interference capability, high stability, good reproducibility, and satisfactory recovery for determination of isomers in river and lake water.

Insights into the Pyrolysis Processes of Ce-MOFs for Preparing Highly Active Catalysts of Toluene Combustion

Wenjie Sun,Xiaomin Li,Chao Sun,Zhen Huang,Hualong Xu,Wei Shen

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently been used as precursors of the catalysts for the combustion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In the present work, three kinds of CeO2catalysts were successfully synthesized from Ce-MOF-808, Ce-BTC, and Ce-UiO-66, with specific topological structures and coordinate environments. Catalysts with small particle size, stacking mode, and structural defects could be created by pyrolysis of Ce-MOFs, which affects the activity in the toluene combustion significantly. Raman spectra, XPS, and OSC studies were performed to reveal the formation of defect sites. The thermal redox properties were determined by H2-TPR. Catalytic activity tests were conducted on the toluene combustion, and CeO2-MOF-808 showed the best catalytic performance (T90 = 278 °C) due to its having the largest specific surface area, abundant active surface oxygen species, and low-temperature reducibility.Keywords:Ce-MOF;cerium oxide;catalytic combustion of toluene;environmental catalysis;pyrolysis process

Selective recovery of gold ions in aqueous solutions by a novel trithiocyanuric-Zr based MOFs adsorbent

Zhen Huang,Minghu Zhao,Shixing Wang,Linqing Dai,Libo Zhang,Chen Wang

A trithiocyanuric-Zr based MOFs adsorbent (ZT-MOFs) was synthesized by using trithiocyanuric acid as a linker and zirconium chloride as a metal matrix and used to recover Au(III). ZT-MOFs was characterized by FT-IR, BET, Raman and FE-SEM. ZT-MOFs are porous material and have good stability in the range of pH 1–9. ZT-MOFs showed a higher adsorption capacity for Au(III) (333.34 mg/g) at 480 min and pH = 7. The experimental data fitted to Freundlich and pseudo second-order models, indicating a heterogeneous multi-layer chemadsorption is the dominated step. ZT-MOFs separated selectively Au(III) from laboratory wastewater containing various interfering ions. The removal rate of Au(III) decreased only from 94.5% to 87.5% after 4 adsorption and desorption cycles. This shows that ZT-MOFs have good repeatability. FT-IR, XPS and Zeta potential data shows that the adsorption mechanism of Au(III) on ZT-MOFs is coordination. Therefore, ZT-MOFs have great potential in extracting Au(III) from wastewater.

MOFs-derived nitrogen-doped carbon interwoven with carbon nanotubes for high sulfur content lithium–sulfur batteries

Maru Dessie Walle,Mengyuan Zhang,Ke Zeng,Yajuan Li,You-Nian Liu

Despite their high energy density , low-cost, and low environmental impacts compared with the current state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries, lithium–sulfur (Li S) batteries still suffer from the low sulfur content, dissolution of polysulfides and capacity loss, which hinder their commercial application. To address these issues, nitrogen-doped cubic carbon (NC) interwoven with carbon nanotubes (CNT) host is introduced to achieve high sulfur content for lithium–sulfur batteries. The NC/CNT composites are derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which can physically confine sulfur, thus providing efficient sulfur loading. The sulfur content in the as-obtained S@NC/CNT composite is as high as 89 wt%, while the cathode membrane has a sulfur loading of 3.6 mg cm − 2 . In addition, the NC/CNT composite can obstruct the dissolution and outward diffusion of polysulfides . Impressively, under the high sulfur content and high sulfur loading conditions, the S@NC/CNT cell exhibits initial specific capacity of 1141 mA h g − 1 at the current rate of 0.5C (837.5 mA g − 1 ) and the capacity retains 674.4 mA h g − 1 after 120 cycles. The S@NC/CNT cathode also shows high areal capacity (4.1 mA h cm − 2 ). The NC/CNT composite derived from MOFs has great potential applications for high‑sulfur loading cathodes.

NiCo-layered double-hydroxide and carbon nanosheets microarray derived from MOFs for high performance hybrid supercapacitors

Haoting Niu,Yong Zhang,Yu Liu,Na Xin,Weidong Shi

Exploring porous nano-structured materials has great significance for energy storage equipment. The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used as the outstanding sacrificial templates for electrode material of high performance supercapacitors due to their superior features that high specific surface area and tunable pore size distribution. However, the poor conductivity of MOFs is one of the biggest barriers to achieve high rate capacity and stable cycling performance. Herein, MOFs derived NiCo-layered double-hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) and nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NC) on the flexible carbon nanotubes (CNTs) film are rationally designed, both of which as the binder-free electrodes can greatly improve the specific surface area and reaction sites. An asymmetric supercapacitor based on porous NiCo-LDH nanosheets on CNTs (CNT@NiCo-LDH) as the positive electrode and the NC nanosheets on carbon nanotubes film (CNT@NC) as the negative electrode exhibits the maximum energy density of 37.4 W h/kg at the power density of 750 W/kg, as well as a long-term cycling stability (94.5% capacity retention after 5000 cycles). Rationally design such combination is a meaningful process for energy storage equipment with excellent electrochemical performance.

A polydopamine-modified reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/MOFs nanocomposite with fast rejection capacity for organic dye

Yucheng Liu,Meng Zhu,Mingyan Chen,Lili Ma,Bing Yang,Lingli Li,Wenwen Tu

A nanocomposite of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-HKUST-1 based on graphene oxide (GO) was modified by polydopamine (PDA). These nanomaterials formed the PDA/RGO/HKUST-1 membrane over the surface of the commercial cellulose acetate membrane support layer to treat dye wastewater. The membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed enhanced membrane separation performance because of improved surface flatness and layer spacing. With the insertion of porous HKUST-1 and the cross-linking modification of PDA, the PDA/RGO/HKUST-1 membranes exhibited excellent flux, rejection, hydrophilic, and anti-fouling performance. The composite membrane could effectively reject methylene blue and Congo red, with removal rates of 99.8% and 89.2%, respectively. In addition, the flux of the PDA/RGO/HKUST-1 membrane increased 31-fold with the addition of HKUST-1 and PDA. Overall, the prepared high-flux composite membrane can be used as an excellent material in a variety of environmental applications.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) combined with ZnO quantum dots as a fluorescent sensing platform for phosphate

Di Zhao,Xiangyu Wan,Hongjie Song,Liying Hao,Yingying Su,Yi Lv

In this work, we demonstrated that metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and ZnO quantum dots (QDs) were successfully employed to design an effective fluorescent sensing platform for phosphate (Pi), thanks to the interactions among the ZnO QDs, MOFs and phosphate ions . The amine–Zn interaction and electrostatic interaction between negatively charged MOFs and positively charged ZnO QDs resulted in the quenching of ZnO QDs fluorescence due to electron-transfer processes, along with the formation of flower-like complex. After introducing Pi ions into the QDs–MOFs system, the burst of Pi ions could inhibit the quenching effect, and recover the fluorescence of ZnO QDs. Furthermore, the fluorescence intensities were dependent on the concentrations of Pi ions and scarcely affected by other possible interfering species. The present fluorescent sensing platform had good sensitivity (the slope of the calibration curve), with a linear range of 0.5–12   μM and detection limit of 53   nM (S/N   =   3). The sensing mechanism of Pi was also investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the results indicated that the Pi ions inhibited the quenching effect via breaking the interactions between MOFs and ZnO QDs, and caused the collapsing of MOFs. Finally, the proposed methodology was used satisfactorily for the assessment of Pi in environmental aqueous samples, which opened a new avenue for Pi determination.

Novel MOFs@XC-72-Nafion nanohybrid modified glassy carbon electrode for the sensitive determination of melamine

Wanqing Zhang,Guangri Xu,Runqiang Liu,Jun Chen,Xiaobo Li,Yadong Zhang,Yuping Zhang

A sensitive and selective sensor was fabricated to determine melamine (Mel), based on MIL-53@XC-72 nanohybrid modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The MIL-53@XC-72 nanohybrid was synthesized from MIL-53 via hydrothermal method, followed by adulterating with XC-72. The prepared sensor possessed high sensitivity and selectivity due to the synergistic effect of the large surface of MIL-53, the bonding interaction between Mel and MIL-53 as well as the high conductivity of XC-72. Under the optimal conditions, the sensor exhibited rapid electrochemical response to Mel at the potential of 0.7   V in 0.1   M HCl solution. A linear concentration range of Mel was obtained from 0.04 to 10   μM with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.998 and detection limit of 0.005   μM (S/N   =   3). In addition, the sensor presented excellent reproducibility, high stability and selectivity, and was successfully applied for the determination of Mel in liquid milk with a good recoveries. Hence, the MOFs@XC-72-Nafion-GCE sensor could be considered as promising applicability for the determination of other electrochemically inactive analytes.

Ge Chunhua,Du Yan,Wang Rui,Xue Lili,Wu Zhongshuai,Xing Tianzhu,Ji Xiaochun,Ma Lin,Zhang Xiangdong

A new composite (CCSs/MOFs) of carboxyl-rich carbon spheres (CCSs) and copper-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) was for the first time prepared. The CCSs/MOFs composite was synthesized by the coordinated growth of high surface area and porous MOFs, [Cu 3 (BTC) 2 (H 2 O)] n (HKUST-1), on the surface of the functionalized CCSs obtained through a one-step hydrothermal carbonization of glucose with acrylic acid at 180 °C for 24 h. The resulting composites showed a core/shell structure with a tunable diameter arranging from 0.6 to 3.0 μm, and possessed high specific surface area of 495 m 2 /g and nanoporous structures derived from MOFs. Further, the catalytic oxidation of benzylic alcohol to benzaldehyde as its application was studied.

Shilin Diao,Mengfang Li,Xuan Liu,Yujia Liu,Qingjin Shang,Yewei Xu

A hybrid material , Ca/Mg-MOF/polyamidoxime (Ca/Mg-MOF/PAO), was synthesized and tested for uranium(VI) uptake in solution. The structure and performance of Ca/Mg-MOF/PAO were comprehensively investigated. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that Ca/Mg-MOF/PAO exhibited an extraordinary saturation capacity of 579.5 mg/g for uranium (VI) at pH = 8, surpassing that of most other adsorbents. The adsorption process of Ca/Mg-MOF/PAO on uranium (VI) conformed to Langmuir and PSO models, suggesting chemical rate control and monolayer adsorption, respectively. Furthermore, Ca/Mg-MOF/PAO displayed excellent adsorption-desorption recovery performance for uranium (VI). Its high adsorption capacity and efficient recoverability position Ca/Mg-MOF/PAO as a material with great potential for extracting uranium (VI) from aqueous media.
