Study of MXene-filled polyurethane nanocomposites prepared via an emulsion method

Weiqiang Zhi,Shanglin Xiang,Renji Bian,Ruizhi Lin,Kaihua Wu,Tingwei Wang,Dongyu Cai

In this work, an emulsion method is applied to fill two-dimensional MXenes into polyurethanes (PUs). It shows that the addition of 0.5 wt% MXenes increase the yield stress, tensile strength and hardness of PUs by ∼70%, ∼20% and ∼13%, respectively. The mechanical enhancement is associated with the increase of hardness and reduction of water absorption. Morphologic study shows that a good dispersion of MXenes is achieved, in which ball milling is a key step for ensuring a stability of MXene-filled PU emulsions. Furthermore, FTIR analysis reveals the strong interaction between MXenes and PUs at molecular level.

Electrical conductivity of self-monitoring MXene/cement composites subjected to carbonation

Jiazhi Yang,Hongqiang Chu,Fangfang Zhi,Zhengxiang Lin,Guohui Yang,Qian Chen,Wenjing Yi,Yangjie Chen,Linhua Jiang

The electrical conductivity of self-monitoring MXene/cement composites subjected to carbonation was investigated. • A carbonation depth prediction model was established based on the general effective medium. • The microstructure evolution of MXene/cement composites affected by carbonation was characterized. The influence of carbonation on the electrical conductivity of self-monitoring cementitious sensors is critical for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. In this study, the electrical conductivity and microstructural evolution of self-monitoring MXene/cement composites (MCC) subjected to accelerated carbonation were systematically investigated. Four-probe resistivity measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to characterize electrical properties, while X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) were used to analyze microstructural evolution. After 28 d carbonation, the carbonation depth decreased from 12.71 mm for the control specimen to 11.86 mm for the specimen containing 2.0 wt% MXene, corresponding to a reduction of 6.69%. The highest compressive strength was obtained at the specimen containing 0.4 wt% MXene, reaching 41.68 MPa after 28 d carbonation, which was 12.04% higher than that of the control specimen. The electrical resistivity of MCC increased during carbonation but remained relatively stable when sufficient MXene was incorporated, indicating that the MXene-assisted conductive network was not destroyed by carbonation. Microstructural analysis showed that MXene promoted matrix densification and pore refinement by affecting the formation and distribution of carbonation products. Based on electrical conductivity and the GEM-derived parameter t , a carbonation depth prediction model was developed and validated within the calibrated carbonation depth range of 0-12 mm. These findings demonstrate the potential of MCC as a self-monitoring cementitious sensor for carbonation-related SHM applications, while further validation under natural carbonation and field exposure conditions is still required.

MXene-Derived LiV3O8 Nanorods for High-Performance Aqueous Ammonium-Ion Batteries

Wei Zheng,Mutian Zhang,Junjiang Fan,Xiang Liu,Miaoxi Guo,Li Yang,Peigen Zhang,Guobing Ying,ZhengMing Sun

Aqueous ammonium-ion batteries offer safe and low-cost energy storage but are limited by the lack of electrode materials combining high capacity, fast kinetics, and long-term stability. Herein, MXene-derived LiV 3 O 8 nanorods are synthesized via an in situ thermal conversion strategy as high-performance anodes. The open 1D architecture enables efficient ion transport, delivering a high capacity of 185 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 , excellent rate capability of 93 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 , and outstanding cycling durability. A dynamic storage mechanism involving reversible H + /NH 4 + co-intercalation and ion-exchange-driven phase transition to NH 4 V 3 O 8 ·H 2 O is revealed, inducing a self-adaptive nanorod-to-nanowire structural evolution that continuously enhances ion transport and active surface area. Density functional theory calculations further reveal ultralow ammonium-ion diffusion barriers along the V–O chain direction and strong adsorption stabilized by hydrogen-bond interactions, providing atomic-level insight into the fast kinetics. Full cells with δ-MnO 2 cathodes exhibit high voltage output and long-term stability, demonstrating practical feasibility.

High-Performance Radar–Infrared-Compatible Stealth MXene/BC/Fe3O4 Composite Aerogel

Liu Han,Gao Zijian,Yang Qingyu,Jiang Bowen,Yin Kuibo

The rapid development of multispectral detection technology has severely restricted single-band stealth materials, driving the demand for radar–infrared-compatible multispectral stealth. However, conflicts between the stealth mechanisms of these two bands pose significant challenges. Herein, a lightweight and highly elastic composite aerogel composed of 0D Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles, 1D bacterial cellulose (BC), and 2D MXene nanosheets is fabricated via self-assembly and bidirectional freeze-drying. The porous structure and component optimization effectively prevent MXene nanosheet stacking and improve impedance mismatch. Benefiting from excellent dielectric–magnetic coupling, the aerogel achieves a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −76 dB at 1.52 mm, the absorption efficiency per unit thickness reaches an excellent value of −50 dB/mm, an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.12 GHz at 1.54 mm, and a maximum radar cross-sectional (RCS) reduction of 30 dB·m 2 , demonstrating outstanding radar stealth. Moreover, it exhibits excellent thermal insulation (thermal conductivity of 0.049 W/m·K) and a low infrared emissivity of 0.666 (8–14 μm), enabling remarkable infrared camouflage. This work provides a simple and efficient strategy for developing high-performance radar–infrared-compatible stealth materials.

Lignin-Containing Nanocellulose Mediated Interlayer Modulation Unlocks Stable and Redispersible MXene

Shuyang He,Zhen Yu,Shan Li,Shijie Lei,Lin Zhu,Ke Zhao,Fangxia Yang,Ningning Cao,Yuyan Liu,Zhimin Fan

Titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) MXene combines exceptional conductivity, mechanical robustness, and multifunctionality, positioning it as a promising material for diverse applications. However, its industrial deployment remains hampered by the inability to precisely control redispersibility and oxidative stability. Herein, an interlayer chemical modulation strategy is reported, mediated by amphiphilic lignin-containing nanocellulose (LNC). Competitive interactions between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments of LNC within MXene interlayers enable precise tuning of spacing and interfacial chemistry. This approach allows rapid, industrial-scale spray drying to produce semi-solid MXene with long-term reversible redispersibility and outstanding oxidative stability. The resulting material can be fully redispersed into monolayer MXene even after 180 days of storage while maintaining high conductivity (≈7000 S cm −1 ). Moreover, by adjusting the post-drying time-dependent window, MXene powders can be programmably switched from a dynamically reversible to a permanently fixed structure, broadening their utility across multiple domains. This approach is expected to resolve the long-standing industry bottlenecks of MXene, including its susceptibility to oxidation, high transportation costs, and challenges in reprocessing, thereby opening a new path for the rapid transition of MXene from laboratory to commercial application.

Macroporous three-dimensional MXene architectures for highly efficient solar steam generation

Xing Zhao,Xiang-Jun Zha,Jun-Hong Pu,Lu Bai,Rui-Ying Bao,Zheng-Ying Liu,Ming-Bo Yang,Wei Yang

Efficient utilization of abundant solar energy for steam generation is an attractive, renewable, and environment-friendly technology for seawater desalination and wastewater purification, enabling solutions to address the global long-standing water scarcity issues. However, the low energy efficiency, high cost and complex systems with multiple components of state-of-the-art technologies hindered their practical applications. Herein, we report the first example of three-dimensional (3D) MXene architecture (3DMA)-based solar steam generators via a facile two-step dip coating process without any annealing or high temperature carbonization. The 3DMAs prepared by a cost-effective, scalable, simple fabrication method show effective broadband solar absorption (∼98%) and excellent solar thermal conversion ability based on 2D to 3D morphological transformation of MXenes, making good use of intrinsic theoretical photothermal performance of MXenes. The particularly hydrophilic nature of MXenes and the macroporous structure of melamine foam allow continuous water supply to 3DMAs owing to their strong capillary effect. As a result, the 3DMAs achieve water evaporation rates of 1.41 and 7.49 kg m−2 h−1 under solar illumination of 1 sun and 5 sun with a superb solar steam efficiency of up to 88.7% and 94.2%, respectively. This scalable 3DMA can be used to produce clean water from both seawater and wastewater with rejections close to 100% for organic dyes and metal ions. This work creates a platform to develop novel composite materials for solar-driven seawater desalination and wastewater purification via opening a new window for the utilization of MXenes as photothermal agents in practical applications.

Vertically Aligned Bismuthene Nanosheets on MXene for High-Performance Capacitive Deionization

Siqi Gong,Huibin Liu,Fan Zhao,Yaning Zhang,Huiting Xu,Meng Li,Junjie Qi,Honghai Wang,Chunli Li,Wenchao Peng,Xiaobin Fan,Jiapeng Liu

Capacitive deionization has been considered as a promising solution to the challenge of freshwater shortage due to its high efficiency, low environmental footprint, and low energy consumption. However, developing advanced electrode materials to improve capacitive deionization performance remains a challenge. Herein, the hierarchical bismuthene nanosheets (Bi-ene NSs)@MXene heterostructure was successfully prepared by combining the Lewis acidic molten salt etching and the galvanic replacement reaction, which achieves the effective utilization of the molten salt etching byproducts (residual copper). The vertically aligned bismuthene nanosheets array evenly in situ grown on the surface of MXene, which not only facilitate ion and electron transport as well as offer abundant active sites but also provide strong interfacial interaction between bismuthene and MXene. Benefiting from the above advantages, the Bi-ene NSs@MXene heterostructure as a promising capacitive deionization electrode material exhibits high desalination capacity (88.2 mg/g at 1.2 V), fast desalination rate, and good long-term cycling performance. Moreover, the mechanisms involved were elaborated by systematical characterizations and density functional theory calculations. This work provides inspirations for the preparation of MXene-based heterostructures and their application for capacitive deionization.

Electrostatically Assisted Construction Modified MXene-IL-Based Nanofluids for Photothermal Conversion

Fangfang Su,Jinliang Xie,Xiaoqian Li,Zhongjie He,Hongni Wang,Jing Zhang,Yangyang Xin,Aibo Zhang,Dongdong Yao,Yaping Zheng

Solar energy, as renewable energy, has paid extensive attention for solar thermal utilization due to its unique characteristics such as rich resources, easy access, clean, and pollution-free. Among them, solar thermal utilization is the most extensive one. Nanofluid-based direct absorption solar collectors (DASCs), as an important alternative method, can further improve the solar thermal efficiency. Notably, the stability of photothermal conversion materials and flowing media is critical to the performance of DASC. Herein, we first proposed novel Ti3C2Tx-IL-based nanofluids by the electrostatic interaction, which consists of functional Ti3C2Tx modified with PDA and PEI as a photothermal conversion material and ionic liquid with low viscosity as the flow medium. Ti3C2Tx-IL-based nanofluids exhibit excellent cycle stability, wide spectrum, and efficient solar energy absorption performance. Besides, Ti3C2Tx-IL-based nanofluids maintain liquid state in a range of −80 to 200 °C, and its viscosity was as low as 0.3 Pa·s at 0 °C. Moreover, the equilibrium temperature of Ti3C2Tx@PDA-IL at a very low mass fraction of 0.04% reached 73.9 °C under 1 Sun, indicating an excellent photothermal conversion performance. Furthermore, the application of nanofluids in photosensitive inks has been preliminarily explored, which is expected to play a role in the fields of injectable biomedical materials and photo/electric double-generation thermal and hydrophobic anti ice coatings.

AgNWs/Ti3C2Tx MXene-based multi-responsive actuators for programmable smart devices

Guinan Chen,Jiahao Li,Nanjun Li,Chenglong Guo,Peng Jin,Liangjun Chen,Yongwu Peng

Thermal bimorph actuators have important applications in artificial muscles, switches, and microsensors for robotics and biomimetic devices. To broaden the adaptability of environments, it is essential to fabricate thermal actuators with multiple stimulus responses, including electricity, near-infrared (NIR) light, and ultraviolet (UV) light, with fast and large deformations . Herein, a thermal actuator with programmable stimuli response was designed by combining silver nanowires (AgNWs) with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene . Due to the synergistic effect of AgNWs with high plasmonic properties and electrical conductivity as well as Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene with good flexibility and photothermal properties, the obtained actuator can roll up for 2200° at a low driving voltage (2 V) and shows a fast response speed of 0.4 s for a bending angle of 360° under NIR light. More remarkably, the obtained thermal actuator can curl 360° in 1.2s under UV light which has never been reported before. We believe that such thermal actuators are attractive for a wide range of innovative technologies involving soft-bodied robots, intelligent grippers, bionic worms, and information cryptography.

Self-supported CsPbBr3/Ti3C2Tx MXene aerogels towards efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Xin Li,Jiale Liu,Guocan Jiang,Xinyu Lin,Jin Wang,Zhengquan Li

Aerogels, especially MXene aerogels, are an ideal multifunctional platform for developing efficient photocatalysts for CO 2 reduction because they are featured by abundant catalytic sites, high electrical conductivity, high gas absorption ability and self-supported structure. However, the pristine MXene aerogel has almost no ability to utilize light, which requires additional photosensitizers to assist it in achieving efficient light harvesting. Herein, we immobilized colloidal CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals (NCs) onto the self-supported Ti 3 C 2 T x (where T x represents surface terminations such as fluorine, oxygen, and hydroxyl groups) MXene aerogels for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. The resultant CsPbBr 3 /Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene aerogels exhibit a remarkable photocatalytic activity toward CO 2 reduction with total electron consumption rate of 112.6 μmol g -1 h - 1 , which is 6.6-fold higher than that of the pristine CsPbBr 3 NC powders. The improvement of the photocatalytic performance is presumably attributed to the strong light absorption, effective charge separation and CO 2 adsorption in the CsPbBr 3 /Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene aerogels. This work presents an effective perovskite-based photocatalyst in aerogel form and opens a new avenue for their solar-to-fuel conversions.

Gelatin-modified Mxene carbon aerogels for ammonium-perchlorate-catalyzed thermal decomposition

Yujie Yan,Bo Jin,Rufang Peng

The assembly of 2D Ti3C2Tx nanosheets into 3D structures with orderable structure has great importance for their use as catalyst carriers. However, Ti3C2Tx nanosheets are prone to accumulate in aqueous solutions owing to the strong van der Waals forces between Ti3C2Tx nanosheet layers, degrading their chemical properties. Carbon aerogel (Ti3C2Tx/G/Co) with a 3D porous structure and cobalt as the active site was prepared by a simple co-assembly–freeze–drying–high-temperature carbonization method for application in catalysis of ammonium perchlorate.

Enhanced acetone sensing performance of Ti3C2 MXene/α-Fe2O3 nanorod composite

Wang Yun,Tan Hongjie,Sang Lexian,Xie Yunying,Jia Fuchao,Zhou Tong,Yin Guangchao,Sun Fazhe,Wang Xiaomei

An optimized acetone gas sensor based on Ti 3 C 2 / α -Fe 2 O 3 (TF) composite materials was synthesized using microwave and etching methods. The structures, morphology and composition of the TF composites were characterized via XRD, XPS, SEM and TEM. The crystal of α -Fe 2 O 3 porous nanorods is hexagonal, and the α -Fe 2 O 3 nanoclusters formed from α -Fe 2 O 3 nanorods were adhered adequately on the lamellar Ti 3 C 2 MXene in the TF composite. The specific surface area and surface defects of the TF composites increased compared with pure α -Fe 2 O 3 nanocluster material, thus exposing a large number of gas adsorption sites. Furthermore, the excellent electrical conductivity and high free charges transfer ability of Ti 3 C 2 MXene provided more electrons for the gas-sensitive reaction and enhanced the transmission capacity of gas-sensitive reaction electrical signal, respectively. The Schottky barriers were formed at the interface of α -Fe 2 O 3 and Ti 3 C 2 MXene increasing the resistance of TF gas sensor in air, which is beneficial to the response of TF gas sensor. So, the gas-sensitive performance of TF gas sensor to acetone was greatly improved. The response of TF gas sensor to 100 ppm acetone was up to 23.38, which was nearly 2.3 times higher than pure α -Fe 2 O 3 gas sensor. The lower detection limit of TF gas sensor could be as low as 1 ppm. In addition, the TF gas sensor had excellent selectivity, long-term repeatability and stability for acetone.
