Modified hollow glass microsphere in-situ reinforced polyurethane/polydimethylsiloxane composite coating with self-cleaning and durable passive radiative cooling behaviors

Weiwei Fan,Heng Li,Zhonghui Wang,Huan Wei,Jun Xiang,Haojun Fan

Passive radiative cooling technology has been widely concerned due to its merits of energy free and zero pollution. However, most of the radiative cooling materials are highly susceptible to contamination from solid dirt and rainwater , which greatly weak their cooling effectiveness. Herein, a hydrophobic radiative cooling composite coating , composed of polyurethane/polydimethylsiloxane (PU/PDMS) and modified hollow glass microsphere (MHGM), was fabricated through in situ reinforcing and phase separation processes. By the synergistic effect of MHGM filler and the surrounded microporous PU/PDMS matrix, the PU7/PDMS3-MHGM coating possessed strong solar reflectance and thermal emittance in the atmospheric transparency window of 0.906 and 0.961, respectively, resulting in sub-ambient daytime cooling of 8.1 °C and nighttime cooling of 3.9 °C. In addition, the composite coating exhibited a higher water contact angle of 139°, the dust and muddy water are unable to stain on its surface during the rinsing process, showing self-cleaning effect. More encouragingly, the composite coating still remained above 93.8 % passive radiative cooling efficiency even if after 100 cycles muddy water rinsing, certainly, such self-cleaning provides assurance for the sustainable application of radiative cooling coatings.

Preparation of eugenol/1−methylcyclopropene composite microsphere by S/O/W method and study on the postharvest quality of loquat

Jingyi Su,Zhaoxin Cao,Yueyang Mao,Wen Shen,Xinyu Wang,Siyu Zhang,Yanqi Chen,Xueme Ge

The S/O/W method of solvent evaporation was utilized in this work for manufacturing poly ( ε −caprolactone) (PCL) microspheres loaded with 1−methylcyclopropene (1−MCP−α−CD) and eugenol (EUG) for temperature- and humidity-regulated EUG release. The composite microspheres with higher encapsulation efficiency (71.39 % ± 2.71 %) were attained by optimizing the rotation speed and mass ratio of PCL to composite powder . The microspheres had good spherical shape without large pores. The rate of release could be managed by different temperature and relative humidity conditions with the release of microspheres (96.82 % ± 0.81 % in 12 days) at the temperature of 60 °C (90 % relative humidity) and (86.50 % ± 2.71 % in 12 days) at the 90 % relative humidity (60 °C). Microsphere encapsulation of EUG and 1−MCP−α−CD was demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometer. Thermal gravity analysis demonstrated that the degradation of EUG@β−CD and 1−MCP−α−CD was delayed after encapsulation. The deterioration of loquat (Baiyu, white-fleshed) can be postponed after treatment of EUG/1-MCP composite microspheres. Relative conductivity, total soluble solids, hardness, color, titratable acid , and weight loss of the loquat were also improved. It could significantly inhibit polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) activities and inhibited browning of loquat tissue. EUG/1−MCP composite microspheres we formulated in this work might be employed to increase the shelf life of loquat.

Study on the effect of wet mixing process on the properties of EPDM rubber/fiber/hollow glass microsphere composite system

Mingchao Wang,Yuan Wang,Xin Chen,Li Liu,Yetao Zhang,Chen Liu

Compared to the traditional open mixing process used for the production of the rubber composites, wet mixing process is a lower shear force mixing method. This article revealed the influence of the open mixing process and the wet mixing process on the microstructure, density, mechanical properties, and ablation performance of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber/fiber/hollow glass microsphere composite system. The results showed that the wet mixing process increased the fiber length by more than 300% compared to the open mixing process, while the fragmentation rate of the hollow glass beads was reduced by 94.4%, these effectively maintained the structural integrity of the fibers and the hollow glass microsphere filler. By using the wet mixing process, the density of EPDM composite materials can be reduced by about 20%, and the tensile strength and ablation resistance of these composites were also significantly improved. Compared to polyimide fiber and aramid fiber short fibers, the wet mixing process of solution-based rubber had a more significant effect on improving the length and ablation resistance of phenolic fiber and carbon fiber fibers which having poor shear strength.

The High Molecular Weight PTMC Enhances PLGA and Incorporates Inorganic Particles Into Composite Microsphere Scaffolds to Promote Bone Defect Repair

Gang Chen,Hai Lan

To address the issues of collapse-type degradation and poor toughness observed in PLGA-based bone repair scaffolds during degradation, this study blends PLGA with poly (trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) and fabricates microsphere scaffolds through the emulsion method followed by sintering to form solid microsphere scaffolds. Additionally, to enhance the osteogenic potential of the scaffold, β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) and varying amounts of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) are incorporated into the polymer. Performance analysis of the composite microsphere scaffolds reveals that the scaffold exhibits a continuous pore structure with a compressive modulus comparable to that of cancellous bone. After the incorporation of inorganic particles, the compressive modulus exceeded 70 MPa. In vitro degradation experiments confirm that the composite microsphere scaffold prepared by blending PTMC exhibited a degradation rate of 9.1% at week 12 while maintaining stable macroscopic morphology. Moreover, the pH at the final stage of degradation effectively mitigated the issue of acidic degradation associated with PLGA (pH = 6.32). In vitro cell experiments demonstrate that the prepared microsphere scaffolds possess good biocompatibility, and the incorporation of β-TCP and TiO 2 enhances the composite scaffold's osteogenic potential and antibacterial properties. This scaffold holds promise as a novel approach for the treatment of bone defects.

Investigation of the Reversible Intercalation/Deintercalation of Al into the Novel Li3VO4@C Microsphere Composite Cathode Material for Aluminum-Ion Batteries

Jiali Jiang,He Li,Jianxing Huang,Kun Li,Jing Zeng,Yang Yang,Jiaqi Li,Yunhui Wang,Jing Wang,Jinbao Zhao

The Li3VO4@C microsphere composite was first reported as a novel cathode material for rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs), which manifests the initial discharge capacity of 137 mAh g–1 and and remains at 48 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles with almost 100% Coulombic efficiency. The detailed intercalation mechanism of Al into the orthorhombic Li3VO4 is investigated by ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of Li3VO4@C electrodes and the nuclear magnetic resonance aluminum spectroscopy (27Al NMR) of ionic liquid electrolytes in different discharge/charge states. First-principle calculations are also carried out to investigate the structural change as Al inserts into the framework of Li3VO4. It is revealed that the Al/Li3VO4@C battery goes through electrochemical dissolution and deposition of metallic aluminum in the anode, as well as the insertion and deinsertion of Al3+ cations in the cathode in the meantime. The rechargeable AIBs fabricated in this work are of low cost and high safety, which may make a step forward in the development of novel cathode materials based on the acidic ionic liquid electrolyte system.

High thermal conductivity, low dielectric constant and good processability of epoxy composites achieved by boron nitride/hollow glass microsphere heterostructured particles

Ji-quan Liu,Guo-rui Zhang,Jian-she Xia,Jing-hui Yang,Xiao-dong Qi,Yong Wang

Heterogeneous structured BN@HGM was constructed via electrostatic self-assembly. • The EP-based composites showed high thermal conductivity. • Suppressed dielectric polarization was achieved. • Viscosity of the composites was maintained at relatively low level. The growing demands of high-power-density and high-frequency electronics require epoxy (EP) composites that achieve a simultaneous balance of high thermal conductivity, low dielectric response, and low viscosity. This study reports a heterostructured particle design, where hollow glass microspheres (HGM) are coated with boron nitride (BN) nanosheets through electrostatic self-assembly, achieving functional partitioning. The BN shell forms continuous thermal pathways, the hollow HGM core introduces air to reduce dielectric polarization, and the confinement of BN nanosheets on spherical HGM suppresses viscosity rise of composites. As a result, the 30 B N@M-HGM/EP achieves an optimal balance among performances, with a thermal conductivity (κ) of 2.4 W/m·K, a dielectric constant ( D k ) of 3.7 at 1 MHz, and a viscosity of 12.43 Pa s, outperforming the conventional composite prepared through physical compounding. Encapsulation tests of electronic components further confirm the good thermal management of the composites, reducing the maximum operating temperature by 27.1 °C. These results demonstrate that the heterostructured engineering of composite particles offers an effective and scalable approach for the simultaneous optimization of thermal, dielectric, and rheological properties in epoxy-based electronic packaging materials. A microenvironment-responsive microsphere–PLGA-PEG-PLGA hydrogel for sustained and coordinated co-delivery of celecoxib and ropivacaine in osteoarthritis therapy

Yuan Hao,Zhang Bingwen,Sun Wen,Liu Haofan,Hu Liandong

In this study, celecoxib (CXB) microspheres (CM) and ropivacaine (RPV) microspheres (RM) were prepared respectively. A poly (D, L-lactide-co-glycolide)-block-poly (ethylene glycol)-block-poly (D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA–PEG–PLGA, PPP) was synthesized by copolymerizing glycolide and lactide with polyethylene glycol. CM, RM, and hydroxyapatite (HA) were then incorporated into PPP solution to construct the microsphere–hydrogel system (CRMH hydrogels). CM, RM, and CRMH were systematically characterized in terms of morphology, physicochemical properties, pH-buffering capacity, and degradation behavior. The pH-dependent drug release and release kinetics of the individual CM, RM and the CRMH hydrogels were also investigated. In vitro release studies demonstrated that CRMH hydrogels provided coordinated, sustained release of CXB and RPV at pH 6.2. In a rabbit osteoarthritis (OA) model, intra-articular (IA) administration of CRMH hydrogels achieved sustained drug retention and release within the joint cavity, and effectively promoted articular cartilage repair. Overall, the CRMH hydrogels showed promising synergistic therapeutic potential for OA.

Fe3O4@Carbon Microsphere Supported Ag–Au Bimetallic Nanocrystals with the Enhanced Catalytic Activity and Selectivity for the Reduction of Nitroaromatic Compounds

Qiao An,Meng Yu,Yuting Zhang,Wanfu Ma,Jia Guo,Changchun Wang

The heterostructure Ag–Au bimetallic nanocrystals supported on Fe3O4@carbon composite microspheres were synthesized by one facile and controllable approach, wherein the Ag nanocrystals attached on the Fe3O4@carbon microspheres were prepared first and served as reductant for the galvanic replacement reaction with the Au precursor (HAuCl4). Upon varying the feeding amounts of the Au precursor, the bimetallic compositions on the Fe3O4@carbon microsphere could be readily tuned resulting in a series of composite microspheres with different Au-to-Ag molar ratios. Subsequently, we thus investigated the catalytic activity and selectivity of the magnetic composite catalysts from two sides. First, 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) was applied as a model molecule to study the effect of different Au-to-Ag molar ratios on catalytic capabilities of the resulting composite microspheres. It was found that upon the addition of NaBH4 the catalytic capability was markedly enhanced when the Au content was increased. The maximum activity parameter value reached 1580 s–1 g–1, which is far higher than those of known monometallic composites. Also, they could give the equally high yields for other nitroaromatic compounds with various substituents, irrespective of the linked electron-donating or electron-withdrawing groups. Second, the synergistic effects of the carbon substrate in the catalysis reaction were demonstrated. When compared with colloidal SiO2, TiO2, and poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) substrates, the carbon support not only facilitated the enhancement of the catalytic performance of the noble metal nanocrystals but was also more suitable for the in situ preparation of Au–Ag bimetallic nanocrystals using the GRR. Besides, the particles’ convenience in terms of their magnetic separability and outstanding reusability was validated through many successive reduction reaction cycles. In light of these unique characteristics, the Fe3O4@C@Ag–Au composite microspheres show promising and great potential for practical applications.

CO2-responsive gel microsphere system for carbon sequestration and enhanced oil recovery in harsh reservoirs: Experimental study and molecular dynamics simulation

Jianing Yu,Xu Li,Haifeng He,Zhimin Peng,Liming Zheng,Jianming Yu,Chenrui Yang,Jun Wei

CO 2 flooding integrates enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and carbon sequestration (CS), yet gas–liquid mobility mismatch deteriorates its performance. While CO 2 -responsive gels mitigate gas channeling, harsh reservoir conditions (e.g., high temperature and salinity) restrict their application. This study aims to develop a novel CO 2 -responsive polymer gel microsphere system to address these challenges. The copolymer microspheres , synthesized via inverse emulsion polymerization using acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and sodium α-olefin sulfonate (AOS), are combined with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to form the responsive system. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) verify the molecular composition and morphology of the microspheres. Zeta potential analysis reveals a stable negative potential of −98 mV, and particle size measurements show a uniform diameter of 1.4 μm. Rheological tests demonstrate that the system exhibits low initial viscosity but rapidly increases in viscosity after CO 2 injection across wide salinity (20,000–80,000 mg/L) and temperature (20-80°C) ranges. Core flooding tests indicate that a 0.8 wt% gel microsphere system achieves a displacement pressure gradient of 14.67 MPa/m in fractured cores during CO 2 flooding. Molecular dynamics simulations further reveal that electrostatic attraction between the copolymer and protonated PEI enhances cross-linking, improving plugging performance in harsh environments. This work highlights the system’s exceptional stability, high plugging efficiency, and mechanism-driven design, offering a promising solution for EOR and CS in harsh reservoirs.

Photoinitiated polymerization of beta-cyclodextrin-stabilized Pickering high internal phase emulsion for preparation of polymethacrylate microsphere and its adsorption towards dyes

Zhang Yipeng,Jiang Ruohai,Zhang Yujie,Huang Chaozhang,Xiong Xiaopeng

Microsphere polymer material finds a wide range of applications in fields such as adsorbent, drug carrier, catalyst and coating, and receives continuous attention. We here report a novel strategy of quick synthesis of polymethacrylate microsphere via photoinitiated polymerization of methacrylate monomer in a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE). A low cost and environmentally friendly natural product of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) has been directly used as Pickering emulsifier to stabilize the methacrylate monomer in water to prepare the HIPE. The factors to control the particle size such as the dosage of β-CD, volume fraction of monomer internal phase and amount of inert diluting solvent, have been investigated in detail. Meanwhile, the approach has been validated by using various methacrylate monomers. Our results indicate that using a diluting solvent can not only change the surface morphology but also control the inner microstructure of the microsphere. By using a poor solvent of cyclohexane as diluting agent, porous microsphere other than solid microsphere has been prepared, and it could be directly applied as adsorbent to decolor oil. Moreover, the obtained poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microsphere was post-modified to exhibit satisfactory adsorption efficiencies towards organic dye contaminates in water. Those results indicate powerful platform of the obtained microsphere with reactive groups for further modification to prepare functional materials for desired purposes. Based on the fast synthesis, high yield, low energy cost as well as no harmful waste, the preparation strategy reported in this work could be scalable, and the obtained microsphere may find promising potential applications. Magnetic and N–doped nanofibrous carbon microsphere with hierarchical porosity as a nanozyme for on-site and visual detection of glucose

Yue Liu,Jiajun Zhang,Taimei Cai,Rong Wang,Gan Yang,Tao Wen,Hailong Peng

Background On-site and rapid detection of glucose level in foods is important for monitoring and control glucose intake. Methods Magnetic and N–doped nanofibrous carbon microspheres (Fe@NCMs) with hierarchical porosity were designed as a novel nanozyme (Fe@NCMzyme), and the catalytic mechanism was investigated via the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Therefore, Fe@NCMzyme sensor and point-of-care testing (POCT) platform were developed for glucose detection in food samples. Significant findings Fe@NCMzyme showed 3D porous structure, a larger surface area, and N–doped carbon material properties, resulting in an enhanced peroxidase (POD)–like activity. In Fe@NCMzyme, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (FeNPs) act as catalytic centers and N–doped carbon nanofibers could be used as substrate binding sites. DFT results revealed that Fe–induced Fenton–like reaction was the main catalytic mechanism. The low detection limit and linear range of Fe@NCMzyme sensor was 0.247 μM and 1–900 μM, respectively. The excellent recovery ration in spiked food samples was 85.0 %–110.0 %. The applicability of Fe@NCMzyme sensor for glucose detection was verified by the commercial Glucometer. Furthermore, Fe@NCMzyme POCT platform was established and a linear detection range (10–900 μM) was obtained with low detection limit (3.125 μM). Importantly, Fe@NCMzyme POCT platform was realized visual, on–site, and rapid detection of glucose in food samples.

Magnetic field dual responsive blueberry-like microsphere achieving targeted, multiple-cyclic, long-term self-healing against electrical damage in insulating materials

Potao Sun,Chaolu Niu,Wenxia Sima,Tao Yuan,Ming Yang,Mingke Zhao,Zheng Fang,QiChang Liu,Qin Deng

Polymer insulation materials are subjected to a combination of electromagnetic fields, mechanical stresses, long-term light exposure, ambient temperature and other operating conditions that produce mechanical and electrical tree damage which lead to insulation failure. Self-healing technology is a fundamental solution to this problem. However, effective long-term self-healing of mechanical and electrical tree damage to insulating materials is extremely challenging. To address this issue, this work reports a magnetic field dual responsive blueberry-like microsphere (MFDR-BLMS) that makes a breakthrough in the long-term self-healing of mechanical and electrical damage. The microspheres are attracted to the vulnerable area of the insulating material by the directional magnetic field. When the damage come into contact with the microspheres, the high thermal conductivity microspheres as a whole rapidly melt and fill the damage channels under the action of electromagnetic induction heating. This method achieves a magnetically dual-action, non-contact, long-term effective self-healing of mechanical and electrical tree damage after photothermal aging of insulation materials. This is expected to eliminate the requirement for human contact during the repair process under live conditions and provides a new technological idea for the industrial application of self-healing materials for electrical insulation.
