Ratiometric fluorescent sensor CQDx@Co/Mn-MOF for rapid and sensitive detection of quinolone antibiotics

Yin-Xia Sun,Xue Bai,Ai-Ping Luo,Yu Sun,Zhe-Peng Deng,Wan-Hong Sun,Wen-Yu Han

Quinolone antibiotics pose a threat to health and the environment due to their difficulty in decomposition and misuse. A novel fluorescence composite material CQD x @Co/Mn-MOF has been developed, which uses cobalt (Co) and manganese (Mn) as metal centers and 1,3,5-triazobenzene as organic ligands. Meaningfully, CQD x @Co/Mn-MOF can be designed as a ratiometric fluorescence sensor for detecting quinolone antibiotics, especially norfloxacin (NFX). In a series of CQD x @Co/Mn-MOF, CQD 6μL @Co/Mn-MOF sensor exhibits good linearity within the NFX concentration range of 1–4 × 10 −5  M, with a detection limit of 0.70 μM. Compared with Co/Mn-MOF, introducing CQDs significantly reduces the detection limit from 3.50 μM to 0.70 μM and increases the detection sensitivity by five times. The CQD 6μL @Co/Mn-MOF sensor exhibits fast response time (2 s), high selectivity and sensitivity to NFX, making it an ideal ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the detection of these antibiotics. Based on its excellent detection performance, the sensor was further applied to the quantitative determination of NFX in chicken, beef and honey samples and satisfactory results were obtained with recoveries ranging from 97.51 % to 108.60 %. In addition, based on CQD 6μL @Co/Mn-MOF test strips, convenient and real-time detection of quinolone antibiotics has been achieved. In conclusion, the CQD 6μL @Co/Mn-MOF ratiometric fluorescent sensor provides a reliable, sensitive and efficient analytical method for the detection and evaluation of trace NFX in food, which is of great significance for ensuring food safety and public health.

Surface in situ Co-Mn modification over LaMnO3 perovskite with enhanced activity for ethane combustion

Peng Zhao,Jingwei Liu,Wei Zhu,Jie Meng,Zhuang Li,Jinwei Qin,Xiaohui Wang,Haiqin Wan,Chao Yao,Lin Dong

Catalytic combustion is one of effective ways to remove short-chain alkanes. In this study, we elaborately designed a novel catalyst of in situ Co-Mn decorated LaMnO 3 perovskite for ethane catalytic combustion, in which extra Mn and Co species were introduced via acidic KMnO 4 and Co(NO 3 ) 2 solution precipitation method. The addition of Mn and Co could not only slightly etch LaMnO 3 , thereby increasing specific surface area and redox property, but also generate new active phase CoMn 2 O 4 , thus accelerating reaction. Among all the as-prepared catalysts, CMO/LMO-0.5 exhibited admirable ethane removal efficiency with a T 90 of 365 °C, a reaction rate of 0.46 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , a TOF value of 0.64 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , and excellent hydrothermal stability and reusability. Moreover, according to in situ DRIFTS, a possible pathway was proposed. This work can rationalize an alternative approach to develop an active catalyst for short-chain alkanes catalytic combustion or other catalytic systems.

Surface Mn-O3* complex-mediated nonradical electron transfer for boosting catalytic ozonation of organic pollutants

Tian Tian,Peixin Zhu,Chun He,Ya Xiong,Jingyun Fang,Shuanghong Tian

As initial and important reactive species, surface O 3 complexes are rarely investigated in catalytic ozonation, which might be one cause of dispute in mechanistic understanding. Herein, In-situ DRIFTS and premixing-standing experiments confirmed the generation of long-lived Mn-O 3 * complexes upon O 3 adsorption on surface Lewis acid sites of α-MnO 2 . In α-MnO 2 /O 3 system, the oxidation rate of various pollutants showed a good linear correlation with their redox potentials, as well as the energy gap between the pollutants and Mn-O 3 * complexes. Joint catalytic mechanism experiments and density functional theory calculations revealed that the oxidation of pollutants was boosted mainly because there was fast nonradical intermolecular electron transfer from the HOMO of pollutants to the LUMO of Mn-O 3 * complexes. This study illustrates the significance of surface Mn-O 3 * complex in catalytic ozonation and discloses an efficient nonradical catalytic ozonation process that is resistant to pH fluctuation and matrix interference.

Hierarchical Flaky Spinel Structure with Al and Mn Co-Doping Towards Preferable Oxygen Evolution Performance

Hengfen Shen,Hao Du,Peng Li,Mei Wang

As an efficient clean energy technology, water electrolysis for hydrogen production has its efficiency limited by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, which drives the demand for the development of high-performance anode OER catalysts. This work constructs bimetallic (Al, Mn) co-doped nanoporous spinel CoFe 2 O 4 (np-CFO) with a tunable structure and composition as an OER catalyst through a simple two-step dealloying strategy. The as-formed np-CFO (Al and Mn) features a hierarchical flaky configuration; that is, there are a large number of fine nanosheets attached to the surface of a regular micron-sized flake, which not only increases the number of active sites but also enhances mass transport efficiency. Consequently, the optimized catalyst exhibits a low OER overpotential of only 320 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , a minimal Tafel slope of 45.09 mV dec −1 , and exceptional durability. Even under industrial conditions (6 M KOH, 60 °C), it only needs 1.83 V to achieve a current density of 500 mA cm −2 and can maintain good stability for approximately 100 h at this high current density. Theoretical simulations indicate that Al and Mn co-doping could indeed optimize the electronic structure of CFO and thus decrease the energy barrier of OER to 1.35 eV. This work offers a practical approach towards synthesizing efficient and stable OER catalysts.

Preparation of Zn2GeO4:Mn,In persistent luminescence nanoparticle composites for the detection of copper ions

Yao-Xing Han,Renagul Abdurahman,Yue Zhang,Shi-Ji Liu,Xiu-Zhen Yang,Xuan-He Guo,Rui Zhang,Xing-Hong Pan,Xue-Bo Yin

Copper in vegetables can enter the human body, and excessive copper may cause uncomfortable symptoms; thus, it is urgent to test copper ions for safety concerns. Herein, we prepared Zn2GeO4:Mn2+,In3+ (ZGO:Mn,In) persistent luminescent nanoparticles (PLNPs) and then grafted glutathione for the determination of copper ions. ZGO:Mn,In was prepared by doping In3+ in ZGO:Mn to improve the emission at 532 nm under excitation at 258 nm. The doping amount, temperature, time, and pH were carefully optimized for a stronger emission intensity than ZGO:Mn. The fractional densities and energy band gaps were calculated by density functional theory, revealing the excitation enhancement mechanism of ZGO:Mn,In. The surface of ZGO:Mn,In was modified with carboxyl groups for linking glutathione to specially identify Cu2+ ions. The identification resulted in the aggregation-induced quenching of PLNPs’ emission. Thus, the sensor exhibited good selectivity for copper ions, and the composite was successfully applied to the detection of copper ions in serum and vegetable samples.

Earth-Abundant Na-Mg-Fe-Mn-O Cathode with Reversible Hybrid Anionic and Cationic Redox

Yaoshen Niu,Zilin Hu,Bo Zhang,Dongdong Xiao,Huican Mao,Lin Zhou,Feixiang Ding,Yuan Liu,Yang Yang,Juping Xu,Wen Yin,Nian Zhang,Zhiwei Li,Xiqian Yu,Hao Hu,Yaxiang Lu,Xiaohui Rong,Ju Li,Yong-Sheng Hu

Na-ion batteries (NIBs) are promising for grid-scale energy storage applications. However, the lack of Co, Ni-free cathode materials has made them less cost-effective. In this work, Mg 2+ is successfully utilized to activate the oxygen redox reaction in earth-abundant Fe/Mn-based layered cathodes to achieve reversible hybrid anionic and cationic redox capacities. A high first charge capacity of ≈210 mAh g −1 with balanced charge–discharge efficiency is achieved without O-loss, showing a promising energy cost of $2.02 kWh −1 . Full cell against hard carbon anode without pre-sodiation shows energy density exceeding ≈280 Wh kg −1 with a decent capacity retention of 85.6% after 100 cycles. A comprehensive analysis of the charge compensation mechanisms and structural evolution is conducted. Voltage and capacity loss resulting from partially reversible Fe 3+ migration to the Na layer is confirmed, shedding light on further improvements for low-cost NIB cathodes in application scenarios.

Transforming electrolytic manganese residue into Mn₃O₄ via acid activation: Structural evolution and leaching kinetics

Yaoyu Yan,Shuchen Sun,Jing Wei,A. Shubo,Faxin Xiao,Ganfeng Tu

Electrolytic manganese residue (EMR), a hazardous solid waste from electrolytic manganese metal (EMM) production, poses serious environmental risks due to its complex mineralogy and heavy metal mobility. However, it also holds potential as a secondary resource. We establish an end-to-end waste-to-materials flowsheet—sulfuric-acid curing → water leaching → impurity removal → one-step conversion—that selectively recovers Mn from EMR and upgrades it to phase-pure, high-value Mn₃O₄ nanomaterials. The effects of curing temperature and acid dosage on the leaching behaviors of Mn, Fe, Al, and Si were systematically investigated. At 240 °C and an acid dosage of 2.5 times the stoichiometric requirement, Mn leaching efficiency reached 95.35 %, while Si leaching remained below 50 % due to silicate encapsulation and gelation. Kinetic modeling using the shrinking core model revealed that Mn dissolution was primarily controlled by product-layer diffusion, with an apparent activation energy of 14–18 kJ·mol −1 . FTIR, XRD, SEM–EDS, and BET analyses showed that acid curing disrupted the dense silicate matrix and increased surface area from 9.4 to 55.6 m 2 ·g −1 . Mn 2+ in the purified leachate was directly precipitated and oxidized using an NH₃·H₂O–H₂O₂–EDTA system, producing uniformly sized Mn₃O₄ nanoparticles. Rather than a stand-alone synthesis, the impurity-tolerant process with defined operating windows is the core contribution, with the Mn₃O₄ product validating this waste-to-value pathway. This integrated route offers a scalable framework for hazardous-waste valorization while clarifying sulfuric-acid-curing transformation and leaching kinetics, advancing sustainable metal recovery.

Preparation and application of Mn, Si-CQDs in Vitamin B6 and in vitro activity analysis

Lifen Meng,Yinying Zhang,Mengting Su

The determination of vitamin B6 (VB6) in food, health products, and pharmaceuticals is of great significance because it plays a crucial role in maintaining health and is a necessary condition for dietary intake. Therefore, the study uses L-Histidine, citric acid, potassium permanganate, and tetraethyl silicate as carbon source and Mn, Si source to prepare Mn, Si-CQDs by a hydrothermal method. The characteristics of the Mn,Si-CQDs are studied by TEM, XPS, FTIR, XRD, and UV-vis spectrum, Mn,Si-CQDs are spherical and well dispersed in aqueous solution, with an average particle size of 5 nm. The effect of different pH and storage time on the fluorescence intensity of Mn, Si-CQDs indicates that Mn, Si-CQDs have good fluorescence stability. The fluorescence of Mn, Si-CQDs can be selectively quenched by VB6 without being affected by interfering other substances, within the range of 0.05-20 μg/mL, The quenching degree ratio of Mn, Si-CQDs , F 0 /F, shows a good linear relationship with the concentration of VB6 (F 0 /F=0.19311+0.03723C (R 2 =0.99882)), with a detection limit of 0.037 μg/mL. The recovery rates were 94.21∼98.80% by the spiked recovery experiments, indicating the high sensitivity and selectivity of the Mn,Si-CQDs . During the antibacterial test, the Mn,Si-CQDs exhibite good antibacterial effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Penicillium, Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae .

Boosting the electrochemical performance of P2-type Mn-based cathode for SIBs by Fe-doping

Yongxiang Yuan,Jianglong Kang,Shengping Jin,Dengdeng Ai,Wenying Zhao,Jiatai Wang,Yulong Kang,Xiaoyi Hou

P2-type layered Mn-based excess metal oxide cathode is considered to be one of the most promising cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to the open sodium ion diffusion channels and low diffusion energy barrier. However, the deep charge/discharge process of the P2-type layered oxide cathodes at high potential leads to the displacement and irreversible alterations of the crystal structure, thereby resulting in poor rate capability and deteriorated capacity retention. The charge/discharge curves are smoothed after Fe doping. The specific discharge capacity, rate capability and cycling stability of the samples are significantly improved by Fe-doping. When x  = 0.03, the obtained Na 0.6 Mn 1-x Fe x O 2 cathode delivers excellent electrochemical performance. The initial discharge specific capacity of the cathode is 193.14 mAh g −1 at 0.1C, and can remain 91.05 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. The capacity retention rate is as high as 86.02 % when the current density turn back to 0.1C after cycles at different current densities. The present work may propose a strategy to improve P2-type layered Mn-based cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries by a doping method, which will be of great significance for the commercialization of sodium-ion batteries.

Catalytic activity of supported Cu-Mn/fly ash geopolymer for the oxidative removal of toluene

Chen Dejun,Feng Jiawei,Guan Qingqing,Zhao Mengqi,Yuan Hao,Liang Xiaoyang

This study successfully developed Cu-Mn supported catalysts on fly ash geopolymer for the oxidative removal of toluene. The surface characteristics and catalytic performance of catalysts were systematically investigated in this paper. It was found that the Cu/Mn ratio plays a crucial role in determining the catalysts’ performance, with the Geo-3 catalyst showing the highest toluene conversion rate of 90% at 296 ℃. The catalyst also exhibited the lowest activation energy of 123.0 kJ/mol, indicating its superior catalytic efficiency. The findings not only contribute to the development of cost-effective and efficient catalysts for VOCs degradation but also provide valuable insights into the influence of the Cu/Mn ratio on the catalytic properties of geopolymer-supported Cu-Mn catalysts. This research offers a promising approach for the abatement of VOCs in industrial emissions.

Efficient degradation of tetracycline in water by a Mn-doped FeOCl-functionalized carbon catalytic membrane

Zonglin Pan,Xinyu Liu,Ruisong Xu,Xinyuan Zhou,Hang Yu,Lin Li,Yintao Yu,Chengwen Song,Tonghua Wang

Constructing high-performance catalytic membrane materials for addressing antibiotic wastewater pollution is of great significance. In this work, a Mn-doped FeOCl functionalized carbon catalytic membrane (CM-FM) was successfully fabricated by immobilizing a Mn-doped FeOCl catalyst onto a low-cost coal-based porous carbon membrane through a straightforward co-impregnation and calcination approach. A systematic investigation was conducted on the effects of key preparation parameters, including the doping ratio and precursor concentration. Results demonstrated that the CM-FM prepared with a Mn:Fe doping ratio of 1:8 and a precursor concentration of 7 wt% exhibited optimal catalytic performance. Under these conditions, the H₂O₂ decomposition efficiency reached 83.5 %, significantly higher than that of the pristine CM (14 %) and CM-FeOCl (78 %). Moreover, the removal efficiencies of tetracycline (TC) and total organic carbon (TOC) were considerably enhanced, achieving 97 % and 48.5 %, respectively. The influence of operational parameters on the catalytic degradation of TC by CM-FM was also examined, confirming its good applicability across different water matrices. Mechanistic studies revealed that Mn doping promotes the catalytic activation of H₂O₂ by the membrane, leading to increased generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O₂). Based on HPLC-MS analysis, potential TC degradation pathways during the catalytic process were proposed. Additionally, ECOSAR software was employed to evaluate changes in the toxicity of degradation products in the permeate solution after catalytic treatment, providing an assessment of the environmental impact reduction.

In situ doping derivative construction of MnOx/Mn-ZrO2-C for efficient degradation of NOx

Qiuju Qin,Chaolian Zhu,Donghai Mo,Zhengjun Chen,Lihui Dong,Bin Li,Liya Zhou

MnO x exhibits excellent low temperature activity for degradation NO x , but its poor SO 2 tolerance restrains its application. Herein, an in situ construction method for MnO x loading on Mn-doped ZrO 2 carrier with carbon (MnO x /Mn-ZrO 2 -C) derived from Mn(NO 3 ) 2 /UIO-66 by in situ doped pyrolysis–oxidation, in which Mn replaces Zr to modify the electronic structure of the ZrO 2 . The MnO x /Mn-ZrO 2 -C with abundant surface oxygen and acid sites showed excellent activity and better SO 2 resistance. A series of characterization results indicated that Mn doping modulates the electron structure of carrier ZrO 2 and enhances the interactions among MnO x , carbon, and Mn-ZrO 2 , resulting in increasing the electron cloud density around Mn and Zr, and consequently, the Mn and Zr on the MnO x /Mn-ZrO 2 -C exhibit poorer sulfiphilic. These findings emphasize the benefits of utilizing a multipronged effect to fabricate highly active and sulfur-resistant NH 3 -SCR catalysts.
