Solar heat blocking materials, which can not only strongly shield the near infrared (NIR) heat rays, but also retain high visible transparency, have been widely studied and used in energy conservation of buildings . In this work, a complete process for preparation of waveband two-component transparent NIR shielding (WTNS) coatings combined ATO (antimony doped tin oxide) and Cs 0.33 WO 3 nanomaterials is proposed. ATO and Cs 0.33 WO 3 were synthesized by controllable hydrothermal methods and dispersed by a ball mill with silane coupling agents . The transmittance spectra demonstrate that WTNS coated glass shows excellent NIR shielding performance in a wide-band wavelength from 780 nm to 2500 nm, which could shield the NIR light as much as 90.9% and retain high transparency in the visible light of 70.6%. The overall energy performance assessment of this NIR shielding coatings was obtained, which includes thermal chamber test and software simulation in EnergyPlus . The chamber tests reveal the superior thermal insulation ability of WTNS coatings. The simulations indicate that for the area like Hong Kong which is cooling dominated areas, WTNS coated glass has the best energy performance which can significantly save up to 15.22% and 9.15% electricity per year in comparison with the normal glass and low-e glass, respectively.

In this work, a matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-triggered tumor targeted mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) is designed to realize near-infrared (NIR) photothermal-responsive drug release and combined chemo/photothermal tumor therapy. Indocyanine green (ICG) and doxorubicin (DOX) are both loaded in the MSN modified with thermal-cleavable gatekeeper (Azo-CD), which can be decapped by ICG-generated hyperthermia under NIR illumination. A peptidic sequence containing a short PEG chain, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) substrate (PLGVR) and tumor cell targeting motif (RGD) are further decorated on the MSN via a host–guest interaction. The PEG chain can protect the MSN during the circulation and be cleaved off in the tumor tissues with overexpressed MMP, and then the RGD motif is switched on to target tumor cells. After the tumor-triggered targeting process, the NIR irradiation guided by ICG fluorescence can trigger cytosol drug release and realize combined chemo/photothermal therapy.

A sensitive fluorescent detection platform for Hg 2 + was constructed based on mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) coated near-infrared (NIR)-emitting gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The thiolated mercaptosuccinic acid was employed as both reducing agent and surface coating ligand in a one-step synthesis of NIR-emitting AuNPs (MSA-AuNPs), which exhibited stable fluorescence with the maximum wavelength at 800 nm and a wide range of excitation (220–650 nm) with the maxima at 413 nm. The MSA coated NIR-emitting AuNPs showed a rapid fluorescence quenching toward Hg 2 + over other metal ions with a limit of detection (LOD, 3δ) as low as 4.8 nM. The sensing mechanism investigation revealed that the AuNPs formed aggregation due to the “recognition” of Hg 2 + from the MSA, and the resultant strong coupling interaction between Hg 2 + and Au (I) to further quench the fluorescence of the AuNPs, which synergistically resulted in a highly sensitive and selective fluorescence response toward Hg 2 + . This proposed strategy was also demonstrated the possibility to be used for Hg 2 + detection in water samples.

Enlightened by the great success of drug repurposing strategy in pharmaceutic industries, in the current study, material repurposing was proposed where the performance of carbonyl iron powder (CIP), a nutritional intervention agent of iron supplement approved by the US FDA for iron deficiency anemia in clinical was explored in anti-cancer treatment. Except for the abnormal iron metabolic characteristics of tumors that serving as potential targets for CIP-based cancer therapy under repurposing paradigm, the efficacy of CIP as catalyst in Fenton reaction, activator for dihydroartemisinin (DHA) and thus increase the chemo-sensitivity of tumors, as well as the potent agent for NIR-II photothermal therapy (PTT) was fully evaluated by an injectable alginate hydrogel form. The CIP-ALG gel could cause rapid temperature rise in the tumor site under NIR-II laser irradiation, leading to complete ablation in the primary tumor. Further on, such photothermal-ablation would lead to ATP release significantly and in the bilateral tumor model, both primary tumor ablation and inhibition of secondary tumor were observed simultaneously under synergistic tumor treatment of nutritional-photothermal therapy (NT/PTT). Material repurposing could thus be confirmed by our pioneering trial and the CIP-ALG meditated NT/PTT/immunotherapy would provide new choice of strategy for safe and efficient tumor therapy.

The gut bacteria not only play a crucial role in maintaining human health but also exhibit close associations with the occurrence of numerous diseases. Understanding the physiological and pathological functions of gut bacteria and enabling early diagnosis of gut diseases heavily relies on accurate knowledge about their in vivo distribution. Consequently, there is a significant demand for noninvasive imaging techniques capable of providing real-time localization information regarding gut bacteria. In this work, we developed a second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescent nanoprobe labeling-based visualization strategy for real-time tracking of the biodistribution of Gram-negative bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract of mice. By utilizing positively charged silver sulfide quantum dots (Ag2S QDs) as NIR-II nanoprobes and exploiting electrostatic interactions to efficiently label the Gram-negative probiotic Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 with negative surface charges, we have achieved rapid and effective labeling. Leveraging the exceptional NIR-II fluorescent performance of Ag2S QDs, our approach enables high spatiotemporal resolution visualization via NIR-II imaging in mouse gastrointestinal areas where Ag2S QD-labeled probiotics are present, facilitating real-time in vivo tracking capabilities for these labeled probiotics. This work not only establishes a powerful intestinal bacterial imaging strategy but also introduces novel concepts for constructing nanomaterial-bacteria hybrid systems.

Biosensors working in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) spectral region have recently gained great attention owning to their deep tissue bioimaging and high spatiotemporal resolution . However, there is still a challenge to develop efficient nanothermometers based on NIR-II luminescence. Herein, we present a pioneering advancement in the field of nanothermometry by synthesizing a novel nanothermometer, a composite of fluoride nanocrystals and quantum dots . This NaYF 4 :1Nd-Ag 2 S QDs@SiO 2 nanocomposite demonstrates exceptional functionality, being excited by a single light irradiation at 808 nm for NIR-II luminescence imaging. Notably, the composite emits at two distinct wavelengths-1064 nm and 1125 nm, attributable to Nd 3+ and Ag 2 S QDs, respectively. This unique emission profile enables deeper tissue penetration, mitigating overheating risks compared to conventional excitation sources at 980 nm. Furthermore, the nanomaterials exhibit remarkable temperature-sensing capabilities, with maximum sensitivities of 0.81%K −1 (S R ) at 333 K. These superior sensitivities outperform many existing temperature sensors relying on thermally coupled Stark sublevels. The SiO 2 matrix not only encapsulates and protects the fluoride nanocrystals and quantum dots but also shields them from aqueous environments, ensuring outstanding luminescence stability. Our findings highlight the potential of this nanothermometer as a highly efficient temperature sensor with promising applications in cutting-edge bioapplications . This development introduces a new frontier in temperature sensing and bioimaging, showcasing its potential for transformative contributions to the field.

Patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections may have higher death rates than those with non-drug-resistant infections. Nanozymes offer a promising approach to eliminating bacteria by producing reactive oxygen species. However, most of the conventional nanozyme technologies encounter significant challenges with respect to size, composition, and a naturally low number of active sites. The present study synthesizes a iron-single-atom structure (Fe-SAC) via nitrogen doped-carbon, a Fe-N 5 catalyst (Fe-SAC) with a high metal loading (4.3 wt.%). This catalyst permits the development of nanozymes consisting of single-atom structures with active sites resembling enzymes, embedded within nanomaterials. Fe-SAC displays peroxidase-like activities upon exposure to H 2 O 2 . This structure facilitates the production of hydroxyl radicals, well-known for their strong bactericidal effects. Furthermore, the photothermal properties augment the bactericidal efficacy of Fe-SAC. The findings reveal that Fe-SAC disrupts the bacterial cell membranes and the biofilms, contributing to their antibacterial effects. The bactericidal properties of Fe-SAC are harnessed, which eradicates the MRSA infections in wounds and improves wound healing. Taken together, these findings suggest that single Fe atom nanozymes offer a novel perspective on the catalytic mechanism and design, holding immense potential as next-generation nanozymes.

Acute lung injury (ALI) poses a significant and escalating medical challenge, where precise diagnosis and timely intervention hold utmost importance in halting its deterioration. Nevertheless, persistent obstacles arise from the lack of agents proficient in both real-time diagnosis and efficient mitigation of ALI. Here, a biocatalytic and second near-infrared (NIR-II) fluorescence-illuminating nanoplatform is designed to simultaneously facilitate real-time monitoring and robust inflammation alleviation in ALI. The study first develops a new aggregation-induced emission luminogen with trifluoromethyl substitutions, which simultaneously increase NIR-II emission wavelength and fluorescence brightness. The molecular probe is further integrated into biocatalytic hollow ceria nanostructures, and cloaked with pre-activated macrophage membranes for targeted inflammation intervention. Upon inhalation administration in ALI mice, the theranostic nanoagents leverage the bright NIR-II emission and active inflammation-tropic properties for in vivo sensitive NIR-II imaging of ALI, which also facilitates real-time tracking of the nanoagents’ distribution and dynamic fate within pneumonia milieu. Concurrently, the catalytic prowess of the nanoplatforms efficaciously scavenges excess reactive oxygen species, dampens proinflammatory cytokines, and promotes macrophage repolarization, substantially alleviating acute lung damage. The multifaceted nanoplatform integrates NIR-II bioimaging with nanocatalysis-mediated immunoregulation, offering a versatile and promising approach for addressing the intricate challenges posed by acute inflammation diseases.

Colon cancer is one kind of malignant digestive tract tumor with high morbidity and mortality worldwide, treatments for which still face great challenges. Recently emerged intervention strategies such as phototherapy and gas therapy have displayed promising effects in the treatment of colon cancer, but their application are still hindered due to insufficient tumor targeting and deeper tissue penetrating capacity. Herein, in the present study, we developed one theranostic nanoplatform Cet-CDs-SNO (CCS) to realize multimodal imaging-guided synergistic colon cancer therapy. Among the CCS, Cetuximab (Cet), one first-line clinical drugs for colorectal cancer, endowed CCS with tumor-targeting capacity and enhanced drug accumulation in tumor cells; CDs doped by Ni2+ and Mn2+ served as NIR-II photothermal therapy (PTT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), and photothermal/magnetic resonance/fluorescence imaging (PTI/MRI/FLI) agents; SNO, a nitric oxide (NO) donor, exerted gas therapeutic (GT) effects under thermal stimulation derived from PTT. In vitro and in vivo experiments proved that CCS had excellent colon cancer-targeting ability. Proliferation of colon cancer cells and tumor growth were significantly inhibited by the administration of CCS without detectable cytotoxicity. This study presented one strategy for developing a multifunctional nanoplatform to be applied in imaging-guided precise tumor therapy.

Antibiotic resistance has become a critical health crisis globally. Traditional strategies using antibiotics can lead to drug-resistance, while inorganic antimicrobial agents can cause severe systemic toxicity. Here, we have developed a dual-antibiotic hydrogel delivery system (PDA-Ag@Levo/CMCS), which can achieve controlled release of clinical antibiotics levofloxacin (Levo) and classic nanoscale antibiotic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), effectively eliminating drug-resistant P. aeruginosa. Benefiting from the photothermal (PTT) effect of polydopamine (PDA), the local high temperature generated by PDA-Ag@Levo/CMCS can quickly kill bacteria through continuous and responsive release of dual-antibiotics to restore sensitivity to ineffective antibiotics. Moreover, AgNPs could significantly improve the efficiency of traditional antibiotics by disrupting bacterial membranes and reducing their toxicity to healthy tissues. A clever combination of PTT and drug-combination therapy can effectively eliminate biofilms and drug-resistant bacteria. Mechanism studies have shown that PDA-Ag@Levo might eliminate drug-resistant P. aeruginosa by disrupting biofilm formation and protein synthesis, and inhibit the resistance mutation of P. aeruginosa by promoting the expression of related genes, such as rpoS, dinB, and mutS. Collectively, the synergistic effect of this dual-antibiotic hydrogel combined with PTT provides a creative strategy for eliminating drug-resistant bacteria in chronic infection wounds.

With the rapid development of social industrialization, energy crisis and environmental problems are becoming increasingly serious. Therefore, there is an urgent need to synthesize multi-mode nanocatalysts for general application. In this paper, a h-Fe3O4@Pd/PDA nanocatalyst with Pd nanocrystals sandwiched between a h-Fe3O4 hollow sphere and a polydopamine (PDA) shell was prepared by a simple redox-oxidative polymerization method. The catalytic activity of h-Fe3O4@Pd/PDA hollow spheres was evaluated using selective reduction hydrogenation of 4-nitrostyrene, reduction of 4-nitrophenol and oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as catalytic models. h-Fe3O4@Pd/PDA has reduction kinetics of 4-nitrophenol up to 0.77 min−1 mg−1. Importantly, the rate of 4-nitrophenol reduction catalyzed by h-Fe3O4@Pd/PDA was enhanced by 1.43 times under near infrared light (NIR, 808 nm) irradiation. In addition, NIR laser can induce the selective reduction of 4-nitrostyrene to 4-aminostyrene by h-Fe3O4@Pd/PDA with a selectivity of 84.8%. Under different reaction scenarios, h-Fe3O4@Pd/PDA hollow spheres could be recycled by magnetic recovery, and the catalytic reaction activity was above 70% after six cycles. As a result, owing to the simple fabrication, good magnetic separation and high NIR-enhanced catalytic properties, h-Fe3O4@Pd/PDA exhibited a wide range of potential in nanocatalysis.

Abstract Photodynamic therapy (PDT), with high spatiotemporal selectivity, minimal side effects and less drug resistance, has emerged as a promising approach for the treatment of cancer. However, inadequate penetration depth and poor efficacy seriously restrict its practical application. To address these challenges, we developed a combined therapy platform (RENP@C/D-FA) based on rare-earth-doped nanoparticles (RENPs) with a structure of NaErF 4 :Tm(0.5%)@NaYF 4 , on which photosensitizer Ce6 (chlorin e6) and chemo-therapeutic drug (DOX) (doxorubicin) were loaded by encapsulating with an amphiphilic polymer distearoyl phosphatidylethanolamine-polyethylene glycol-folic acid (DSPE-PEG-FA). RENPs with NaErF 4 as the matrix possess multiple excitation/emission peaks, enabling activation of PDT under near-infrared-IIb (NIR-IIb, 1500–1700 nm) excitation and luminescence imaging in NIR-IIb region by absorbing 808 nm near-infrared photons. Furthermore, DOX can be selectively released in the acidic microenvironment of tumors. Benefiting from the tumor targeting capability of folic acid, this platform can successfully ablate tumor cells and inhibit tumor growth by combining PDT and chemotherapy. This innovative approach holds great promise as a powerful tool for cancer treatment, showing the potential to revolutionize PDT. Graphical abstract
