Considering the important functions of cellular Na+ and K+ together with their cooperative efforts on various biological processes, it is significant to simultaneously detect Na+ and K+ at a single-cell level. Here, we present a novel method to discriminate and quantify simultaneously Na+ and K+ in single cells using a new near-infrared fluorescent probe associated with microchip electrophoresis. The fluorescent probe selectively responds to both Na+ and K+. The microchip electrophoresis allows accurate single-cell manipulation and effective distinction of Na+ and K+. Based on the method, the concentration of Na+ and K+ in single normal and cancer cells was compared, and the variation of Na+ and K+ in single cancer cells during the early stage of apoptotic volume decrease was monitored, which would help us to better understand the critical roles of Na+ and K+ in malignant cells and apoptosis. This method has paved a new way for the research of the synergistic function of Na+ and K+ in the regulation of various biological processes at a single-cell level.

A series of SrAl [4−(4 x )/3] O 7 : x Mn 4+ (0≤ x ≤1.4 mol%) and Sr (1−0.06/2) Al [4−(4×0.008)/3] O 7 :0.008Mn 4+ ,0.06R + (R + =Li + , Na + , and K + ) phosphors are synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction method in air. The PLE bands peaking at~325, 395, and 470 nm and the strongest PL band peaking at~660 nm are assigned to the 4 A 2 → 4 T 1 transition of Mn 4+ ion and O 2− –Mn 4+ change transfer band, 4 A 2 → 2 T 1 , 4 A 2 → 4 T 2 , and 2 E → 4 A 2 transitions, respectively. The optimum Mn 4+ doping concentration is about 0.8 mol%. Li + , Na + , and K + ions used as charge compensator can improve observably the PL intensity of SrAl 4 O 7 :Mn 4+ phosphor with excitation 325 nm. The fluorescence lifetimes of SrAl [4−(4×0.008)/3] O 7 :0.008Mn 4+ and Sr [1−0.06/2] Al [4−(4×0.008)/3] O 7 :0.008Mn 4+ ,0.06 R + (R + =Li + , Na + , and K + ) are 0.958, 0.97, 1.113 and 0.965 ms, respectively. The luminous mechanism is explained by schematic energy level diagram of Mn 4+ ion. These experiment results indicate that SrAl 4 O 7 :Mn 4+ ,R + (R + =Li + , Na + , and K + ) phosphors can be used as red emitting phosphor candidate for white LEDs based on a UV (~325 nm) and near UV (~395 nm) bands of LEDs chip.

Li-rich Mn-based layered oxides with high specific capacity and operating voltages have become one of the most promising materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, it still faces several issues of low initial Coulombic efficiency, poor electronic conductivity, and voltage fading due to oxygen release and transition metal rearrangement during cycling. In this study, Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 (LMR) cathode material with Na ion doping (LMNaR) and CeO2 nanoparticle surface modification (LMNaR@CeO2) is prepared to realize a synergistic modification effect. The doping of Na ions enlarges Li layer spacing to effectively promote the insertion and extraction of lithium ions, which makes the layered structure more stable to reduce the effect of the phase transition. And the CeO2 nanoparticle surface modification restrains the side reactions between electrode and electrolyte, stabilizes lattice oxygen, and eases oxygen release. As a result, LMNaR@CeO2 displays a specific capacity of 196 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles at 0.5 C with a capacity retention of 94% and a merely voltage decay of 0.16 V, which are much better than those of LMR with a specific capacity of 159.6 mAh g–1 and only a 79% capacity retention. Our strategy here provides a feasible approach for the development of Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials for long-lived LIBs.

Point defect engineering has garnered widespread application for enhancing the dynamic behavior of anode materials and improving electrochemical performance. Herein, a hybrid point defect strategy is proposed in Ti-based oxide materials to achieve N doping induced oxygen vacancies (OVs) and subsequently accelerated electron mobility and perform better diffusion kinetics. This methodology culminates in the fabrication of self-supported nanotube arrays comprising N-doped OVs-rich TiO 2 (denoted as N-TNTs). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical characterizations validate that, hybrid point defects lead to high electron mobility and perform better diffusion kinetics, as well as higher Li + /Na + ions adsorption energy barrier and diffusion energy barrier, which in turn improves the rate performance and cycling stability. This research provides a forward-looking and feasible strategy for the application of point defect engineering in anode materials.

Sodium metal batteries (SMBs) have been widely investigated recently due to the low price of Na metal, satisfactory energy density and similar chemical properties to lithium. However, SMBs also face challenges like low Na utilization, dendrite growth, dead sodium accumulation, unstable solid electrolyte interphase and massive bubble generation. To improve their safety and cycling stability, herein, we fabricate a porous hybrid framework, i.e. , fine Bi nanoparticles anchored in porous N-doped carbon matrix (Bi@PNC), as a modified layer upon Cu collector toward stable SMBs. Upon electrochemical activation, the nanoscale Bi-derived Na–Bi alloy with high sodiophilicity reduces the nucleation overpotential of Na, inhibits the formation of Na dendrites, and decreases the loss of Na during cycling. Thanks to these striking merits, the half cells assembled with Na undergo 1600 cycles (3200 h) at 1 mA cm −2 , 1 mAh cm −2 with the average Coulombic efficiency of 99.95%. The optimized Bi@PNC based symmetric cells still maintain the overpotential of ∼9.2 mV under 1 mA cm −2 and depth of discharge of 16.7% after cycling for 2420 h. Furthermore, the assembled less-Na full SMBs exhibit superb electrochemical properties. Our strategy here provides meaningful avenue to construct stable less-Na metallic anodes for advanced SMBs.

Flame-retardant gel polymer electrolyte (FRGPE) with high ionic conductivity and practical safety is essential for the next generation of high energy density sodium metal batteries (SMBs). However, they suffer from serious side reactions and insufficient interfacial stability against sodium metal anode, causing severe performance degradation and even safety issues. Herein, to address these challenges, a fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) additive confined metal-organic framework (MOF)-based composite gel (AC-MCG) interlayer was constructed upon sodium anode through a facile in-situ UV-induced photopolymerization. The FEC confined in AC-MCG induces the formation of NaF-rich inorganic solid-electrolyte interphase, effectively eliminating the side reactions between the FRGPE and sodium metal anode. Moreover, the MOF with ordered nanochannels can homogenize Na + flux during the plating process and also endow the AC-MCG interlayer with high mechanical strength, thus sufficiently suppressing the growth of sodium dendrites. Benefitting from these merits of the AC-MCG interlayer, a high critical current density of 2.0 mA cm −2 and a long-term cycling life for over 4200 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 are achieved for the Na/Na symmetric cells. Besides, the solid-state SMBs paired with the constructed AC-MCG interlayer also demonstrated considerable electrochemical performance and practical safety.

O3-NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 layered cathode material has been widely concerned by the industry for its advantages of simple preparation, low cost and high theoretical specific capacity. However, due to a series of surface side reactions, some transition metal ions are reduced, resulting in structural Jahn-Teller distortion, leading to poor structural stability . Herein, Ti element is introduced into O3-NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode material, and the effect of Ti doping on the phase structure and electrochemical properties of the material is analyzed in detail. The results show that Ti doping can enlarge the Na layer spacing and decrease the transition metal layer spacing. Thus, the modified material has a smaller Na ion diffusion barrier and a more stable structure. These advantages give a sample with a doping rate of 2.5 wt% a rate capacity of 74.8 mAh g −1 at 10 C, a capacity retention rate of 86.2 % after 100 cycles at 1 C, and an energy density of 320.5 Wh kg −1 for a full cell structure using a hard carbon anode. This strategy provides a valuable reference for cationic doping to improve the properties of O3 layered transition metal oxides .

O3-NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 has attracted much attention as a cathode for sodium-ion batteries, because of its low cost and high sodium-ion storage capacity. However, its slow Na+ diffusion kinetics and harmful P3–O3′ phase transition with severe bulk strain at high voltage leads to poor rate capability and fast capacity fading. Herein, we propose a multivariate doping strategy with Cu, Mg, and Ti ions to solve the above problems of the O3-NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode. The O3–Na(Ni1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3)0.9Cu0.03Mg0.02Ti0.05O2 (NFMCMT) cathode exhibits enlarged Na+ diffusion channels and a strengthened layered structure, which improves the Na+ diffusion kinetics, suppresses the harmful P3–O3′ phase transition at high voltages, and inhibits the intragranular fatigue cracks, leading to enhanced rate capability and cycling performance. As a result, the NFMCMT exhibits outstanding performance in the 2–4.1 V voltage window, delivers a discharge capacity of 151.2 mAh g–1 with the 81.5% capacity retention for 100 cycles at 0.1 C, and 83.1% capacity retention for 300 cycles at 5 C. Especially in the rate performance, the NFMCMT delivers a 115.6 mAh g–1 and 100.1 mAh g–1 discharge capacity even at 5 and 10 C. This work provides an effective multivariate doping strategy for development of high-performance layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries.

Developing low-temperature, high-efficiency ammonia decomposition catalysts for hydrogen production is essential for the broad application of hydrogen. This study conducted a systematic investigation of Ru/MgO catalysts modified with different alkali metals (Na, K, Cs), unveiling the impact of these modifications on catalyst performance and developing a highly efficient low-temperature ammonia decomposition catalyst. The addition of all alkali metals enhances the catalytic performance of Ru/MgO for ammonia decomposition, especially the addition of K, which results in the optimal enhancement of the catalyst, achieving a 75% ammonia decomposition efficiency at 350 °C (GHSV= 2,000 mL/h·gcat), more than doubling the performance of the unmodified Ru/MgO catalyst. The study revealed that the addition of potassium (K) altered the rate-determining step of the ammonia decomposition reaction from nitrogen recombination to the dissociation of the first hydrogen atom, and reduced the overall energy barrier required for the reaction. This facilitated the desorption of nitrogen from the Ru surface and the conversion of NH3, thereby accelerating the rate of the ammonia decomposition reaction.

Owing to the unique structure and physicochemical properties, including high specific surface area , self-doped N atoms, open pore structure and good chemical stability, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and their derivatives have been widely used in the field of energy storage. Here, a new type of "cocoon"-like Zn/N doped ZIF-derived porous carbon (Zn@N-C-800) is synthesized as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium ion batteries (SIBs) through a one-step carbonization process using a novel Zn-ZIF as the precursor. In Zn@N-C-800, the "cocoon"-like disordered carbon skeleton is conducive to electrolyte infiltration, while the Zn/N doping can provide additional active sites for ion storage. Benefiting from these unique structural characteristics, Zn@N-C-800 achieves excellent electrochemical performances as anode for both LIBs and SIBs: an ultrahigh rate capability of 352 mAh g −1 can be delivered at 12.8 A g −1 for LIBs; an outstanding long-term cycling stability (312 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 2000 cycles) can be achieved for SIBs. This paper provides new ideas for the design and preparation of high-performance anodes for LIBs and SIBs.

The synergistic optimization of high strength, strong adhesion, high conductivity, and rapid self-healing in hydrogels faces fundamental challenges arising from conflicting mechanisms. Herein, a 3D-printed, ionically conductive interpenetrating double-network hydrogel based on poly (acrylic acid) (PAAc) is developed via the innovative introduction of dynamic Na⁺ bridges. This molecular design enables a unique dual mechanism: the Na⁺ ions not only form reversible ionic bonds that accelerate chain diffusion through bond rupture-recombination but also create an electrostatic shielding effect in the covalent network, which promotes chain extension to improve mechanical strength without sacrificing dynamic properties. Furthermore, Na⁺ ions regulate bound/free water states and reduces energy dissipation during topological rearrangement. These synergistic mechanisms collectively enable the hydrogel to overcome conventional performance trade-offs. The resulting material concurrently enhances mechanical properties (300 kPa tensile, 1.2 MPa compressive strength), adhesion (160 kPa), and self-healing (>90% recovery in 1 h). Biomimetic devices such as an underwater octopus-tentacle gripper, biomimetic crawling suckers, and pressure sensors are fabricated. By integrating hydrogels with 1D convolutional neural network algorithms, a real-time motion behavior recognition system is further developed. The multi-property cooperative design strategy offers a new pathway for the application of intelligent hydrogel materials in soft robotics and flexible electronics.

Boosting the ultralow temperature (below −30 °C) performance of Na-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs), which integrate the high energy density of batteries with the high output power and long life of supercapacitors, is critical for the application of advanced electronics in extreme environments. However, their low-temperature performance, especially fast charging capability, is hindered by difficult desolvation and slow pass solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) together with sluggish diffusion within the electrode. Herein, a “single-solute–single-solvent” electrolyte is developed and a through-hole hollow carbon sphere (TH-HCS) is constructed, and it is demonstrated through theoretical calculations and experimental investigations that the weakly solvated structure and high ionic conductivity facilitate the Na + transportation at low temperatures, the highly fluorinated SEI facilitates the Na + migration, and the through-hole hollow structure alleviates the volume expansion during sodiation, thus ensuring fast kinetics and structural stability. As expected, TH-HCS using this electrolyte exhibits a high specific capacity of 87.5 mAh g −1 after 11 000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 and −40 °C. Coupled with activated carbon, the assembled SIHC displays an energy density of 106.1 and 52.0 Wh kg −1 at 25 and −40 °C, respectively, far exceeding the performance of commercial energy storage systems at low temperature.
