The critical role of titanium cation for the enhanced Na-ion layer spacing of O3 layered oxide cathode materials

Qinghui Ren,Yong Li,Lanlan Lei,Guangming Wang,Jie Hou,Weile Xu,Shouman Chen,Shuyue Li,Liping Chen,Juan Wang

O3-NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 layered cathode material has been widely concerned by the industry for its advantages of simple preparation, low cost and high theoretical specific capacity. However, due to a series of surface side reactions, some transition metal ions are reduced, resulting in structural Jahn-Teller distortion, leading to poor structural stability . Herein, Ti element is introduced into O3-NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cathode material, and the effect of Ti doping on the phase structure and electrochemical properties of the material is analyzed in detail. The results show that Ti doping can enlarge the Na layer spacing and decrease the transition metal layer spacing. Thus, the modified material has a smaller Na ion diffusion barrier and a more stable structure. These advantages give a sample with a doping rate of 2.5 wt% a rate capacity of 74.8 mAh g −1 at 10 C, a capacity retention rate of 86.2 % after 100 cycles at 1 C, and an energy density of 320.5 Wh kg −1 for a full cell structure using a hard carbon anode. This strategy provides a valuable reference for cationic doping to improve the properties of O3 layered transition metal oxides .

Suppressed P3–O3′ Phase Transition and Enhanced Na+ Diffusion Kinetics of O3-Type Layered Oxide Cathode via Multivariate Doping

Zhe Xu,Haidi Yang,Xuesen Zhao,Runguo Zheng,Zhishuang Song,Zhiyuan Wang,Hongyu Sun,Yanguo Liu,Dan Wang

O3-NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 has attracted much attention as a cathode for sodium-ion batteries, because of its low cost and high sodium-ion storage capacity. However, its slow Na+ diffusion kinetics and harmful P3–O3′ phase transition with severe bulk strain at high voltage leads to poor rate capability and fast capacity fading. Herein, we propose a multivariate doping strategy with Cu, Mg, and Ti ions to solve the above problems of the O3-NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode. The O3–Na(Ni1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3)0.9Cu0.03Mg0.02Ti0.05O2 (NFMCMT) cathode exhibits enlarged Na+ diffusion channels and a strengthened layered structure, which improves the Na+ diffusion kinetics, suppresses the harmful P3–O3′ phase transition at high voltages, and inhibits the intragranular fatigue cracks, leading to enhanced rate capability and cycling performance. As a result, the NFMCMT exhibits outstanding performance in the 2–4.1 V voltage window, delivers a discharge capacity of 151.2 mAh g–1 with the 81.5% capacity retention for 100 cycles at 0.1 C, and 83.1% capacity retention for 300 cycles at 5 C. Especially in the rate performance, the NFMCMT delivers a 115.6 mAh g–1 and 100.1 mAh g–1 discharge capacity even at 5 and 10 C. This work provides an effective multivariate doping strategy for development of high-performance layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries.

Ru/MgO Catalysts Modified with Various Alkali Metals (Na, Cs, K) for COx-Free H2 Production from NH3 Decomposition

Tianxu Su,Bin Guan,Chunzheng Zheng,Jiefei Zhou,Zhen Huang

Developing low-temperature, high-efficiency ammonia decomposition catalysts for hydrogen production is essential for the broad application of hydrogen. This study conducted a systematic investigation of Ru/MgO catalysts modified with different alkali metals (Na, K, Cs), unveiling the impact of these modifications on catalyst performance and developing a highly efficient low-temperature ammonia decomposition catalyst. The addition of all alkali metals enhances the catalytic performance of Ru/MgO for ammonia decomposition, especially the addition of K, which results in the optimal enhancement of the catalyst, achieving a 75% ammonia decomposition efficiency at 350 °C (GHSV= 2,000 mL/h·gcat), more than doubling the performance of the unmodified Ru/MgO catalyst. The study revealed that the addition of potassium (K) altered the rate-determining step of the ammonia decomposition reaction from nitrogen recombination to the dissociation of the first hydrogen atom, and reduced the overall energy barrier required for the reaction. This facilitated the desorption of nitrogen from the Ru surface and the conversion of NH3, thereby accelerating the rate of the ammonia decomposition reaction.

ZIF-derived "cocoon"-like in-situ Zn/N-doped carbon as high-capacity anodes for Li/Na-ion batteries

Fengzhou Yuan,Zhe Chen,Huan Zhang,Yachao Jin,Li Song,Mingdao Zhang

Owing to the unique structure and physicochemical properties, including high specific surface area , self-doped N atoms, open pore structure and good chemical stability, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and their derivatives have been widely used in the field of energy storage. Here, a new type of "cocoon"-like Zn/N doped ZIF-derived porous carbon (Zn@N-C-800) is synthesized as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium ion batteries (SIBs) through a one-step carbonization process using a novel Zn-ZIF as the precursor. In Zn@N-C-800, the "cocoon"-like disordered carbon skeleton is conducive to electrolyte infiltration, while the Zn/N doping can provide additional active sites for ion storage. Benefiting from these unique structural characteristics, Zn@N-C-800 achieves excellent electrochemical performances as anode for both LIBs and SIBs: an ultrahigh rate capability of 352 mAh g −1 can be delivered at 12.8 A g −1 for LIBs; an outstanding long-term cycling stability (312 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 2000 cycles) can be achieved for SIBs. This paper provides new ideas for the design and preparation of high-performance anodes for LIBs and SIBs.

Dynamic Na+ Bridges: A 3D Printing Strategy for Hydrogels With High Strength, Low Hysteresis, Strong Adhesion, and Self-Healing

Mengyao Chen,Wenjing Qin,Yanli Wang,Hanlin Zhai,Changshun Gu,Xiangchuan Zhao,Ying Bi,Yixin Xu,Zeyu Ming,Shengrong Li,Shu Hu,Xingyue Zhang,Xiaoye Ma,Shougen Yin

The synergistic optimization of high strength, strong adhesion, high conductivity, and rapid self-healing in hydrogels faces fundamental challenges arising from conflicting mechanisms. Herein, a 3D-printed, ionically conductive interpenetrating double-network hydrogel based on poly (acrylic acid) (PAAc) is developed via the innovative introduction of dynamic Na⁺ bridges. This molecular design enables a unique dual mechanism: the Na⁺ ions not only form reversible ionic bonds that accelerate chain diffusion through bond rupture-recombination but also create an electrostatic shielding effect in the covalent network, which promotes chain extension to improve mechanical strength without sacrificing dynamic properties. Furthermore, Na⁺ ions regulate bound/free water states and reduces energy dissipation during topological rearrangement. These synergistic mechanisms collectively enable the hydrogel to overcome conventional performance trade-offs. The resulting material concurrently enhances mechanical properties (300 kPa tensile, 1.2 MPa compressive strength), adhesion (160 kPa), and self-healing (>90% recovery in 1 h). Biomimetic devices such as an underwater octopus-tentacle gripper, biomimetic crawling suckers, and pressure sensors are fabricated. By integrating hydrogels with 1D convolutional neural network algorithms, a real-time motion behavior recognition system is further developed. The multi-property cooperative design strategy offers a new pathway for the application of intelligent hydrogel materials in soft robotics and flexible electronics.

Enhancing the Whole Migration Kinetics of Na+ in the Anode Side for Advanced Ultralow Temperature Sodium-Ion Hybrid Capacitor

Jiafeng Ruan,Sainan Luo,Shaofei Wang,Jiaming Hu,Fang Fang,Fei Wang,Min Chen,Shiyou Zheng,Dalin Sun,Yun Song

Boosting the ultralow temperature (below −30 °C) performance of Na-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs), which integrate the high energy density of batteries with the high output power and long life of supercapacitors, is critical for the application of advanced electronics in extreme environments. However, their low-temperature performance, especially fast charging capability, is hindered by difficult desolvation and slow pass solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) together with sluggish diffusion within the electrode. Herein, a “single-solute–single-solvent” electrolyte is developed and a through-hole hollow carbon sphere (TH-HCS) is constructed, and it is demonstrated through theoretical calculations and experimental investigations that the weakly solvated structure and high ionic conductivity facilitate the Na + transportation at low temperatures, the highly fluorinated SEI facilitates the Na + migration, and the through-hole hollow structure alleviates the volume expansion during sodiation, thus ensuring fast kinetics and structural stability. As expected, TH-HCS using this electrolyte exhibits a high specific capacity of 87.5 mAh g −1 after 11 000 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 and −40 °C. Coupled with activated carbon, the assembled SIHC displays an energy density of 106.1 and 52.0 Wh kg −1 at 25 and −40 °C, respectively, far exceeding the performance of commercial energy storage systems at low temperature.

Dual Optimization of Electrolyte and Interface in Na-β″-Al2O3 via Ga3+ Doping for Advanced Solid-State Sodium Batteries

Shangqing Qu,Tianhao Niu,Xianji Qiao,Yanran Shen,Guohong Cai,Xiaoge Wang,Yonggang Wang,Zhipeng Zhou,Shipeng Zhang,Zeyue Zhang,Guobao Li,Guanqun Cai,Junliang Sun

Na- β ″-Al 2 O 3 is a highly promising solid-state electrolyte (SSE) for solid-state sodium batteries (SSSBs) with a wide electrochemical stability window and excellent stability against metallic sodium. However, its practical application is hindered by the instability of β ″ phase ( R 3 ¯ $\bar 3$ m ) during sintering, low polycrystalline ionic conductivity at room temperature, and poor interfacial contact with sodium anodes. In this study, a stablized SSSB is obtained via doping Ga 3+ into Na 1.67 Mg 0.67 Al 10.33 O 17 (NMAO), which also suppresses the formation of the β ′ phase ( P 6 3 / mmc ) and decreases stacking faults. After sintering at 1550 °C for 2 h, Na 1.67 Mg 0.67 Al 9.33 GaO 17 (NMA9.33GO) exhibits an ionic conductivity of 9.2 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 30 °C, ≈1.7 times greater than NMAO. Furthermore, Ga 3+ doping enhances the wettability with sodium, achieving superior contact stability and the formation of Na-Ga alloys at the interface significantly improves electrode-electrolyte contact stability, achieving a high critical current density (CCD) of 0.8 mA cm −2 and a low interfacial impedance of 16 Ω cm 2 . A quasi-solid-state battery assembled with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) as the cathode demonstrates excellent cycling stability and rate performance, retaining a high discharge capacity of 91 mAh g −1 at 5 C, and maintaining 87% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1 C. This work provides new insights into improving electrolyte performance and interfacial engineering through doping strategies, thereby promoting the development of efficient and long-term SSSBs.

Enhancing the cycling stability of Na-ion batteries by bonding SnS2 ultrafine nanocrystals on amino-functionalized graphene hybrid nanosheets

Yong Jiang,Min Wei,Jinkui Feng,Yuchen Ma,Shenglin Xiong

Room-temperature Na-ion batteries (NIBs) have been generally expected to offer a hopeful perspective for renewable energy storage applications on a large scale. However, a shortage of appropriate anode materials for NIBs has hindered their large-scale applications. Here, we report the strong chemical bonding of tin sulfide on amino-functionalized graphene that is prepared by a facile amine-thermal reaction. In contrast to previous reports on graphene-based composite electrodes, our strategy has the following merits: the one-step formation of amino-functionalized reduced grapheme oxide (RGO) from GO and tight contact of SnS2 nanocrystals at an amino-functionalized graphene interface. This concept has been demonstrated by experimental results which are in congruence with first principles theoretical calculations. When investigated as an anode material for NIBs, the composite maintained a capacity of 680 mA h g−1 after cycling for 100 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g−1, and 480 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1. The outstanding performance results from the unique structure of the hybrid nanosheets.

Prompt Molten Na Infusion and Fluidic Transport by Virtue of Versatile Nano Canal Defects on Tin Oxide Sodiophilic Hosts

Yuzhuo Zeng,Weijing Bai,Jianhui Zhu,Maowen Xu,Jian Jiang

Intrinsically weak metal affinity and sluggish sodium (Na) nucleation/molten fluidic transport of conventional hosts impede the fabrication of high-capacity Na anodes. Mediating surface free energies (SFEs) of hosts and reinforcing their intermolecular attraction to viscous Na fluids can radically solve these problems. Herein, “canaled” tin oxide nanorod arrays grown on a 3D carbon cloth (CC) matrix exhibit distinct polar/nonpolar SFE components that markedly elevate the solid–liquid wettability for molten Na is reported. Such nanocanal defects render strong capillary forces for spontaneous molten Na imbibition and help to instantly activate Na─Sn alloying and Na nucleation reactions. Furthermore, sodiophilic Na 15 Sn 4 interlayers evolved in former alloying procedures also aid in reducing Na nucleation energy barriers and guide the planar electro-deposition/dispersion, alleviating the uncontrolled Na dendrite growth. The derived Na/Na 15 Sn 4 /CC anodes can thus keep stable after 2000 h of galvanostatic cycling at 1 mA cm −2 or high-rate testing, without notable dendritic formation. The packed full cells also show superior rate capability and cyclability (capacity retention over 91.5% after all cycling at 1 C). This work provides a smart nano-engineering way to trigger a fast infusion of molten metals into hosts and synergistically facilitate Na fluidic transport, which may push forward the scalable application of Na metal batteries.

Ion-Migration Mechanism: An Overall Understanding of Anionic Redox Activity in Metal Oxide Cathodes of Li/Na-Ion Batteries

Yangyang Lai,Huixian Xie,Peng Li,Biao Li,Along Zhao,Laibing Luo,Zewen Jiang,Yongjin Fang,Shengli Chen,Xinping Ai,Dingguo Xia,Yuliang Cao

The anionic redox reaction (ARR) has attracted extensive attention due to its potential to enhance the reversible capacity of cathode materials in Li/Na-ion batteries (LIBs/SIBs). However, the understanding of its activation mechanism is still limited by the insufficient mastering of the underlying thermodynamics and kinetics. Herein, a series of Mg/Li/Zn-substituted Na x MnO 2 and Li x MnO 2 cathode materials are designed to investigate their ARR behaviors. It is found that the ARR can be activated in only Li-substituted Li x MnO 2 and not for Mg- and Zn-substituted ones, while all Mg/Li/Zn-substituted Na x MnO 2 cathode materials exhibit ARR activities. Combining theoretical calculations with experimental results, such a huge difference between Li and Na cathodes is closely related to the migration of substitution ions from the transition metal layer to the alkali metal layer in a kinetic aspect, which generates unique Li(Na)–O–□ TM and/or □ Li/ Na –O–□ TM configurations and reducing reaction activation energy to trigger the ARR. Based on these findings, an ion-migration mechanism is proposed to explain the different ARR behaviors between the Na x MnO 2 and Li x MnO 2 , which can not only reveal the origin of ARR in the kinetic aspect, but also provide a new insight for the development of high-capacity metal oxide cathode materials for LIBs/SIBs.

F and Na Co-doped carbon dots with enhanced afterglow emission for applications in fingerprint recognition and information encryption

Wei Gao,Hao Hu,Jinkun Xue,Yongrun Dong,Wen Li,Xia Zhao,Xiang Mao,Zequan Li

Carbon dots (CDs) have attracted considerable interest as fluorescent nanomaterials; however, their long-afterglow emission properties remain underexplored. In this study, we synthesized dual-mode afterglow CDs exhibiting room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) via fluorine-sodium (F, Na) co-doping, achieving an extended afterglow lifetime of 574 ms. Under 365 nm UV excitation, the afterglow emission persists for 14 s (naked-eye observation) and 40 s (instrumentally quantified), demonstrating exceptional temporal resolution. Na doping enhances afterglow intensity by 11.3 %, while fluorine doping reduces the singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔE ST ) to 0.036 eV, facilitating efficient Reverse Intersystem Crossing and enabling TADF behavior. These synergistic effects position the developed CDs as promising candidates for anti-counterfeiting systems, multilevel data encryption, and high-security optical tagging.

Unlocking the potential of P3 structure for practical Sodium-ion batteries by fabricating zero strain framework for Na+ intercalation

Yuansheng Shi,Zhizhen Zhang,Pengfeng Jiang,Ang Gao,Kangwan Li,Qinghua Zhang,Yang Sun,Xueyi Lu,Dapeng Cao,Xia Lu

Layered sodium transition metal oxides (NaTMO 2 ) have garned considerate attention as candidates for cathode materials in practical Na-ion batteries because of their potentially high energy density and operating voltage. Among the several categories (P2, P3, O3) of layered NaTMO 2 materials, P3 type cathodes are least studied due to the fast capacity/voltage fading induced by P3-O3 phase transition, as shown by the very few compositions visited in previous reports. It is highly desirable to stabilize the P3 phase throughout the sodium extraction/insertion process as P polytype allows facile migration of Na + -ions between two adjacent prismatic sites. In this work, we synthesized a phase pure P3-Na 0.75 Mg 0.08 Co 0.10 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.60 O 2 (P3-MNCM) via the incorporation of Mg, while successfully maintains the P3 structure during the charging/discharging process. This together with good ionic conductivity , endows good structural reversibility, and consequently leads to superior cycling performance and rate performance than undoped composition. In situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) further verifies that P3-MNCM cathode demonstrates a near zero strain feature. Of special importance is that the P3-O3 phase transition is effectively suppressed with the incoporation of Mg into the transition metal layer. These findings demonstrate the potential of P3 structure as a promising choice for Na ion cathode materials, which open a feritile avenue and will hopefully inspire more endeavors in the exploration of high performance sodium ion batteries.
