Structural colors composed of silica (SiO 2 ) microspheres have attracted the attention of researchers due to their environmental sustainability, vivid colors, and dynamic adjustability. However, the coffee-ring effect is a common phenomenon that occurs during the evaporation of droplets on the paper substrate and can notably affect color performance. In this study, dopamine (DA) was employed for the oxidative self-polymerization of the surface of SiO 2 microspheres to Polydopamine (PDA), resulting in SiO 2 @PDA microspheres with different absorbance. By multilayer coating, SiO 2 @PDA induced by evaporation at room temperature was assembled into a disordered structure, facilitating bright amorphous photonic crystals (APCs) on handmade paper. The addition of the sizing agent enhanced the adhesion strength and durability of the coating. Thus, the negative impact of coffee-ring of structural color is not only reduced by multilayer coating, but it is also simple to operate and vivid colors can be constructed on handmade paper, which is conducive to replacing traditional chemically dyed paper and achieving industrial-scale production.

The hydrophobic failure of superhydrophobic coatings in low-temperature, high-humidity environments, coupled with microstructural wear, constrains their practical application in antifreeze technologies. This study introduced a novel strategy utilizing micro-nano particle chains to promote directional alignment of polymer molecular chains, thereby constructing a hierarchical fibrous network architecture that significantly improves the hydrophobic stability of coatings under extreme conditions. Partially hydrophobic rigid microparticles serve as structural scaffolds to protect embedded nanoparticles while acting as reinforcing nodes that enhance the mechanical robustness of the coating matrix. The core–shell structures engineered via polydopamine (PDA) functionalization of micro-nano structured Fe 3 O 4 particles exhibit superior surface reactivity, facilitating the grafting of NH 2 -PDMS-NH 2 (PFe 3 O 4 @PDA). Dynamic imine bonds formed between diamino-terminated polymethoxysiloxane (NH 2 -PDMS-NH 2 ) and benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (BTC) mediate the assembly of micro-nano particle chains, which through entropic confinement promote the formation of a hierarchical fibrous network during spray deposition, achieving a contact angle of up to 159.4 ± 0.49° and a rolling angle of 3.1 ± 0.18°. The network structure formed by nPFe 3 O 4 @PDA, distributed on the fiber surface, not only facilitates the self-drainage of condensed droplets and delays the freezing of water droplets, but also directs the formation of uniform ice shells, thus reducing ice adhesion strength. Furthermore, it enhances the photothermal conversion efficiency and thermal conductivity of the coating, enabling the complete melting of ice droplets within 58 s. This fibrous network coating, containing dual-scale particles, exhibits both mechanical and chemical stability, offering a viable design strategy for the implementation of superhydrophobic coatings in anti-icing applications.

The pore structure and surface properties of ceramic membranes lead to a low separation flux, which limits their further application. Changing the microstructure of membranes by introducing new technologies is a very effective method. In this study, high flux ceramic substrate membranes were prepared by metal mesh-assisted phase inversion method, and then new PDA@SiO 2 ceramic membranes were prepared by introducing PDA@SiO 2 core-shell structure. During the phase inversion, the metal mesh pores restrict the path of the water nuclei to extract the polymer, and the microchannels grow along the extraction path, creating a uniform pore size above the metal mesh and removing the dense layer below, allowing the ceramic substrate membranes to exhibit high fluxes. PDA@SiO 2 core-shell structures were stably grown on the surface of ceramic membranes by vacuum self-assembly. Due to the introduction of hydrophilic groups and micro-nano scale roughness, the PDA@SiO 2 ceramic membranes exhibit super-hydrophilic/underwater super-oleophobic performance, stabilizing the separation of oil-in-water emulsions with excellent permeation fluxes (1058 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹·0.2 bar⁻¹) and oil removal rate (99 %). PDA@SiO 2 ceramic membranes exhibit excellent stability, fouling resistance, and durability in harsh environments, contamination tests, and cycling tests. Excellent oil-water separation, stability, and durability make PDA@SiO 2 ceramic membranes a promising solution for the treatment of oil-in-water emulsions.

Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) and Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) being major pathogens responsible for community-acquired respiratory infections. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is critical for improving patient outcomes and effectively controlling disease transmission. Herein, we report a novel dual-channel lateral flow immunoassay (DC-LFIA) platform based on the Co3O4@polydopamine (PDA) nanocomposite with outstanding extinction coefficient, oxidase-like activity, and magnetic properties for the simultaneous detection of specific IgM antibodies (Ab) against these two pathogens in human serum. The magnetic properties of the Co3O4@PDA nanocomposite enable rapid enrichment of trace target Abs from large-volume serum samples, with a high extinction coefficient for direct colorimetric visualization and an excellent oxidase-like catalytic activity for signal enhancement. On the basis of the multifunctional Co3O4@PDA nanocomposite, rapid dual-mode detection of serum Abs was achieved within 12 min. By the direct colorimetric mode, the visual limit of detection (vLOD) for M. pneumoniae Ab and C. pneumoniae Ab reached 2 and 1 ng/mL, respectively, while the oxidase-like catalyzing signal amplification mode further lowered the vLODs to 0.2 and 0.1 ng/mL, accordingly. Additionally, the signal normalization using a 3D-printed device significantly enhanced assay accuracy and reproducibility. When applied to 96 clinical serum samples, compared to commercial kits, this multifunctional Co3O4@PDA-based DC-LFIA demonstrated superior performance, providing a reliable approach for simultaneous antibody detection in respiratory infection diagnosis. Overall, this work contributes a valuable diagnostic tool to the field of rapid detection of ARIs.

A biomimetic, fluorine-free, three-layer aqueous coating for cotton─composed of an Fe2+/Cu2+-catalyzed polydopamine (PDA) primer, a chitosan–SiO2 (CS) aerogel midlayer, and a thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) overcoat─was developed to impart durable superhydrophobicity, rapid photothermal self-healing, antibacterial activity, and efficient oil–water separation. Treated cotton exhibited a static water contact angle (WCA) of 170° and retained a WCA of >155° after 2500 Martindale abrasion cycles or 30 ISO 105-C06 wash cycles; the WCA was restored to ≥160° after ambient storage or within 20 min under natural sunlight as surface temperatures approached ≈50 °C. PDA-mediated Cu2+ chelation (5 mM) produced >99% inhibition of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus; gravity-driven oil–water separation efficiencies exceeded 98% with >96% retention after 12 cycles. Preliminary scalability and environmental impact analyses, including material inventories and PDMS release estimates, support the potential for industrial translation. This fluorine-free, beetle-exoskeleton-inspired strategy offers a scalable route to multifunctional, sustainable textile finishing and environmental remediation.

Waterborne epoxy coatings are favored for their environmental friendliness and low volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions. However, traditional waterborne epoxy coatings have limitations in terms of barrier properties and self-healing ability, resulting in poor long-term corrosion protection. To overcome this shortcoming, a novel green composite based on PDA@Ce-MOF@TA-Fe (PCTF) was developed in this study, aiming to construct a high-performance coating system with enhanced corrosion protection, pH responsiveness, and self-healing properties. The EIS measurements demonstrated a significant enhancement in the barrier property and self-healing capability of the waterborne epoxy coating incorporated with the PCTF composite (PCTF/WEC). After 40 days of immersion in corrosive conditions, the impedance of the PCTF/WEC coating remains at 9.82 × 10 8 Ω·cm 2 , which is much higher than that of the WEC coating alone (1.47 × 10 6 Ω·cm 2 ). PCTF/WEC coating also shows excellent pH response in acidic environments (pH = 3). Salt spray tests and UV irradiation tests confirm the coating's good weathering resistance. This study provides a promising strategy for the development of long-lasting and environmentally friendly anti-corrosion coatings.

Lateral flow immunochromatographic assay (LFIA) features advantages such as a rapid analysis process, interpretable detection results, and low cost, making it an effective method for on-site detection of pesticides. However, the existing LFIA technologies still face bottleneck issues, including strong background fluorescence interference from the substrate and insufficient detection sensitivity for low pesticide residue levels. Here, long-lived room-temperature phosphorescent carbon dots embedded in silica (CDs@SiO2) were developed to overcome background fluorescence interference. Fe3O4 coated with dopamine (Fe3O4@PDA) was utilized for the enrichment of target pesticide molecules. Meanwhile, by virtue of the quenching effect of Fe3O4@PDA on CDs@SiO2, colorimetric and phosphorescent dual-mode LFIA technology was designed for the detection of the pesticide acetamiprid. Through the integration of the advantages of CDs@SiO2 and Fe3O4@PDA, the limit of detection (LOD) for acetamiprid was as low as 0.271 ng/mL, and satisfactory recoveries were achieved in real samples. This research breaks through the millisecond-level lifetime limitation in traditional time-resolved fluorescence immunoassays, providing novel insight for the development of labeling materials for LFIA.

With the rapid development of the chemical industry, large amounts of industrial organic pollutants have constituted a huge threat to the ecological environment. The 3-D porous TPU/TiO 2 /PDA composite foam with outstanding oil/water separation and photocatalytic performances was successfully prepared. Its morphology, chemical composition, surface wettability, mechanical properties, oil/water separation, and photocatalytic performances had been systematically studied by SEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS, Raman, XPS, TGA, contact angle instrument, and ultraviolet spectrophotometer. The results showed that TPU/TiO 2 /PDA composite foam can remove water and oil for various oil/water mixtures and emulsion with outstanding separation performance only under the gravitational force. The water and oil separation flux can reach 21,035 L/m 2 ·h and 14,500 L/m 2 ·h, respectively. The highest separation efficiency reach to 99.6% for petroleum ether/water. It also can continuously separate the oil and water from various water/oil mixtures with the assistance of the pump; after 10 cycles, it maintains large separation efficiency of 98.5%. Moreover, the RhB removal rate reached up to 96% only after irradiation 1 h under UV light. These results manifested that the prepared multifunctional TPU/TiO 2 /PDA composite foams have great application prospect in oil/water separation fields, providing a new idea for fabricating 3-D porous composite foams with multifunctionality. A novel type of 3-D porous TPU/TiO 2 /PDA composite foam with multifunctional applications was successfully designed and prepared. It exhibits excellent performance for oil/water separation and photocatalytic degradation of organic dye. Graphical abstract

Sustainable management of plant bacterial diseases calls for delivery systems that minimize reliance on conventional synthetic pesticides while improving deposition efficiency, on-demand release, and environmental compatibility. This study employs a coordination-driven hollowing strategy to construct interface-optimized hollow metal–phenolic nanocarrier (NaSA@PDA@ZIF-8), achieving synergistic loading of sodium salicylate and Zn 2+ . PDA-induced etching of ZIF-8 generates a well-defined hollow architecture while enhancing hydrophilicity and colloidal stability. The optimized nanocarrier, obtained via Box–Behnken response surface design, achieves a NaSA loading content of 23.90%. Regarding interfacial performance, the carrier exhibits significantly optimized wetting behavior with a contact angle reduced to 51.15°, enhanced dynamic spreading speed, and outstanding leaf adhesion and rain-wash resistance, ensuring effective retention and utilization in complex field environments. Under simulated bacterial wilt conditions in tobacco (acidic pH 5.0 and elevated temperature of 35 °C), the system exhibited enhanced release behavior. The cumulative release of NaSA reached 81.72% and 83.40%, while Zn 2+ release reached 23.19% and 18.72%, indicating good responsiveness to disease-relevant microenvironmental conditions. Its antibacterial activity (EC 50 = 17.80 mg·L -1 ) is likely associated with multiple contributing factors, including Zn 2+ release, potential ROS generation mediated by PDA, and NaSA-related activation of plant defense responses. This work demonstrates a hollow metal–phenolic nanoplatform that integrates interfacial adhesion, stimuli-responsive co-delivery, and biosafety, providing a multifunctional reference model for green plant protection. Background Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a promising orthopedic implant material due to its bone-matched elastic modulus and radiolucency. However, its clinical application is limited by biological inertness and lack of antibacterial activity, which predispose to implant-associated infection (IAI) and poor osseointegration. This study developed a multifunctional coating on sulfonated PEEK (SPEEK) via polydopamine (PDA)-mediated co-delivery of simvastatin-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles (SIM@ZIF-8) and moxifloxacin (MOX) to address these limitations. Methods A time-programmed release coating was fabricated on SPEEK by embedding SIM@ZIF-8 within a PDA layer and surface-loading MOX onto the surface. The coating’s physicochemical properties, drug release profiles, biocompatibility, antibacterial activity, and osteogenic capacity were evaluated in vitro. Antibacterial efficacy and osseointegration were further assessed in vivo using rat subcutaneous infection and rabbit femoral defect models. Results Release profiles revealed that MOX exhibited burst release within 24 h, whereas SIM quickly reached therapeutic concentrations during the initial phase and was slowly released over five weeks, while Zn2+ from ZIF-8 was released synchronously with SIM. In vitro antimicrobial assays showed that the synergistic release of MOX and SIM exhibited potent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, providing sustained inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms. The coating also promoted MC3T3-E1 cell adhesion, spreading, and osteogenic differentiation, as indicated by upregulated osteogenic markers (Runx2, OCN, OPN, COL1A1), enhanced matrix mineralization, and increased BMP-2 expression. In rat models, bacterial colonization on the coated surface and residual bacteria in tissues were significantly reduced. In rabbit femoral defects, sustained co-release of SIM and Zn2+ accelerated new bone formation and improved osseointegration, confirmed by micro-CT, double fluorescence labeling, and histological analysis. Conclusion This study presents a novel bioactive PEEK implant coating integrating antibacterial and osteogenic functions through a MOX/SIM@ZIF-8/PDA system. The strategy effectively combats IAI and enhances osseointegration, offering potential for clinical orthopedic applications.

A crosslinker-free PVA/CS hydrogel with polydopamine-engineered Ag nanoparticles was developed. • The hydrogel shows strong tissue adhesion, mechanical robustness, and self-healing for long-term wound application. • PDA enables sustained Ag⁺ release and stable NIR-responsive photothermal heating. • Ag@PDA0.5 balances antibacterial efficacy, photothermal activity, and cytocompatibility. • NIR-mediated photothermal treatment reduces inflammation and promotes vascularization in MRSA-infected diabetic wounds. Chronic diabetic wounds complicated by multidrug-resistant bacterial infections remain a persistent clinical challenge, requiring advanced wound dressings that integrate effective antibacterial protection with tissue regeneration. Herein, we developed a biocompatible and crosslinker-free hydrogel system composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS), integrated with polydopamine-coated silver nanoparticles (Ag@PDA). The PDA coating, together with the hydrogel matrix, regulated Ag + release, thereby maintaining antibacterial activity while reducing silver-associated cytotoxicity. The resulting PVA/CS-Ag@PDA hydrogel exhibited favorable mechanical properties, tissue adhesion, cytocompatibility, antioxidant activity, and broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy. In vitro and in vivo experiments collectively demonstrated the pro-regenerative and immunomodulatory effects of the hydrogel. In vitro, the hydrogel promoted endothelial cell migration and regulated macrophage inflammatory responses, as evidenced by reduced pro-inflammatory markers and enhanced repair-associated gene expression. In an MRSA-infected diabetic rat wound model, PVA/CS-Ag@PDA treatment suppressed bacterial growth, attenuated inflammatory infiltration, downregulated pro-inflammatory genes including Il6 and Tnf, and upregulated repair-associated genes including Il10 and Mrc1. Moreover, Ag@PDA endowed the hydrogel with concentration-dependent near-infrared (NIR)-triggered photothermal behavior. Among the tested formulations, PVA/CS-Ag@PDA0.5 generated a moderate and stable photothermal response and was selected for NIR-assisted antibacterial treatment. Under NIR irradiation, PVA/CS-Ag@PDA0.5 further enhanced bacterial eradication against MRSA and E. coli . NIR-assisted treatment also reduced CD45 + inflammatory cell infiltration and CD68 + macrophage accumulation, enhanced CD206-associated reparative signaling, and improved epidermal remodeling, collagen deposition. This work presents a rational strategy for engineering silver-based hydrogel dressings with controlled Ag + release, NIR-enhanced antibacterial activity, and improved regenerative efficacy for infected diabetic wound repair. Eradicating cutaneous infections induced by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses, via conventional topical drug delivery is challenging owing to limited epidermal penetration. To overcome this limitation, we fabricated a poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) microneedle array coated with a carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) film embedded within situ-synthesized polydopamine-modified silver nanoparticles (PDA@Ag NPs) for enhanced antibacterial efficacy. This design utilizes microneedle (MN)-mediated skin perforation to enhance drug permeation, combined with rapid film dissolution for the efficient release of the payload. The experimental findings revealed that the PDA@Ag-CMC/PEGDA MNs possess favorable biocompatibility along with dual photothermal and photodynamic functionalities. Mild photothermal therapy (PTT) triggered by these MNs promotes the production of antibacterial reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in a high antibacterial rate of up to 98% against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) under NIR irradiation at a PDA@Ag concentration of 40 μg mL−1. To assess transdermal delivery performance, lidocaine hydrochloride (LiH) (78 μg per MN array) was incorporated into the CMC film as a model drug. Physiological conditions confirmed accelerated LiH release from the PDA@Ag-LiH-CMC/PEGDA system upon aqueous exposure. This minimally invasive approach demonstrated promising broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, suggesting that the PDA@Ag-LiH-CMC/PEGDA platform could serve as a viable clinical solution for managing polymicrobial skin infections and alleviating wound pain.
