Electrochemical performance and stability of a PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film at high temperature

Shuo Yang,Xuan Li,Huijun Li,Pei Yao

A polypyrrole/montmorillonite-polyvinylidenedifluoride/polymethyl methacrylate (PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA) composite film was prepared by a solvent casting technique. The surface morphology and cross-sectional structure of the 12 wt.% PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film exhibited porosity with high specific surface area and good adsorption capacity. The 12 wt.% PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film shows good electrolyte uptake (241%) and electrochemical stability. The ionic conductivity of the 12 wt.% PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film with LiPF 6 organic electrolyte reaches 2.45 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 20 °C. The Li/LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 cell assembled with the 12 wt.% PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film and LiPF 6 organic electrolyte exhibits good capacity retention and cycling performance at 1 C and 60 °C. At the same time, the nucleophilic substitution reacts with the PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film and HF from hydrolysis by trace moisture of LiPF 6 in the electrolyte solution, which can inhibit the disproportionation of Mn 3+ in the LiNi 1/3 Co 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 electrode material and decrease the internal resistance of the cell at high temperature. In conclusion, the PPy/MMT-PVDF/PMMA composite film can be employed in Li-ion batteries.

Preparation and characterization of proton exchange membrane based on polyphosphoric acid modified by PVDF-HFP

Xiangze Cheng,Huaiyang Jin,Chunhui Shen,Shanjun Gao,Jiang Wang,Xi Zhu

A polyphosphoric acid functionalized proton exchange membrane (PEM) was prepared by a ring opening reaction using the epoxycyclohexylethyltrimethoxysilane (EHTMS) and amino trimethylene phosphonic acid (ATMP) as raw materials and was modified by poly(vinylidene fluoride)–hexafluoro propylene (PVDF-HFP). The structure of the membranes was characterized by Fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscopy. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy explores the content of the elements in the membrane related to the ion exchange capacity value. The membranes’ properties including water uptake, swelling ratio, proton conductivity, and hydrolysis stability were studied. Performance tests show that when ATMP/EHTMS = 1/5, conductivity of the PVDF-HFP modified PEMs increased from 0.83 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 20 °C to 9.53 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 160 °C, the swelling ratio of membranes decreased from 2.71% to 2.13%. The results indicate that the introduction of F atoms is beneficial to increase the proton conductivity and the dimensional stability. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Construction of SiO2@MWNTs incorporated PVDF substrate for reducing internal concentration polarization in forward osmosis

Xuan Zhang,Liang Shen,Chen-Yu Guan,Chu-Xuan Liu,Wan-Zhong Lang,Yan Wang

This work provides a facile and effective way of incorporating SiO 2 @MWNTs in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate to alleviate the internal concentration polarization (ICP) impact of the resultant thin film composite forward osmosis (TFC-FO) membranes for the first time. The in-situ decoration of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursor was conducted, resulting in improved hydrophilicity and the excellent dispersion of synthesized SiO 2 @MWNTs in PVDF membrane substrates accordingly. Effects of the SiO 2 @MWNTs concentration on the morphologies and properties of the modified substrates, and further impact on the polyamide (PA) layer structure are investigated via various characterizations. Besides, the intrinsic separation properties and forward osmosis performance of resultant TFC-FO membranes are also systemically studied. In comparison with the control TFC membrane, SiO 2 @MWNT-modified TFC membranes exhibit higher water fluxes with the enhanced membrane selectivity, as indicated by the decreased J S /J V values (from 1.10 to 0.19 g/L). This work therefore presents an alternative approach to prepare TFC-FO membranes with enhanced water flux as well as increased selectivity.

PVDF/palygorskite composite ultrafiltration membranes: Effects of nano-clay particles on membrane structure and properties

Dongyang Wei,Shouyong Zhou,Meisheng Li,Ailian Xue,Yan Zhang,Yijiang Zhao,Jing Zhong,Dawei Yang

Palygorskite (PGS) was incorporated into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix and PVDF/PGS nanocomposite UF membranes were prepared successfully via a combination of non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) and thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS) processes. The influence of the size of the PGS particles (PGS-L, 450 nm and PGS-S, 302 nm) on the membrane pore structure, morphology, mechanical strength, filtration performance and antifouling property were investigated. The results showed that the PVDF/PGS-S composite membranes had higher porosity and lower overall membrane thickness and skin layer thickness. This directly resulted in better PWF , BSA flux, BSA rejection and FRR for the membranes loaded with PGS-S, when compared with the characteristics of PVDF/PGS-L membranes. Thus, the physical structures are dominant factors in determining the separation performance of PVDF/PGS composite membranes. However, the surface roughness and thermal stability of PVDF/PGS-L membranes were greater than those of PVDF/PGS-S membranes and their surface was also more hydrophilic . Moreover, they exhibited higher mechanical strength owing to stronger binding forces and lower porosity. Thus, the composite properties of PVDF/PGS UF membranes could be adjusted by controlling the scale of the inorganic filler .

Advancing electrodialysis with dually cross-linked PVDF-based anion exchange membranes having semi-interpenetrating networks

Yazhen Jiang,Binghui Wang,Hongyu Liu,Junbin Liao,Shuaijun Yu,Edison Huixiang Ang,Jiangnan Shen

Electrically-driven membrane technology plays a crucial role in water treatment and purification, finding applications in various fields like saline water and wastewater desalination, saline concentration and wastewater recycling. The content of this study is based on dually cross-linking and hot-pressing on a PVDF blend, to fabricate a kind of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) having semi-interpenetrating network and thus improve the defect of the traditional heterogeneous AEMs. The research explores the impact of vinyl imidazole (VIM) and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) monomers, primarily or dually cross-linking, and optimizes the membrane properties through a hot-pressing process. Under these optimized conditions, the resulting membranes exhibit robust mechanical properties and outstanding desalination capabilities, achieving an area resistance of 2.56 Ω cm 2 (comparable to standard homogeneous membranes), a desalination rate of 97.26% (outperforming the Neosepta AMX: 76.90%), and a salt limiting concentration of 3.1 M (surpassing the heterogeneous AEM and Neosepta AMX). Notably, this synthesis method is characterized by its cheap raw material and low energy consumption. This research offers valuable insights for the advancement and large-scale implementation of anion exchange membrane desalination.

Preparation and properties of PVDF/SiO2@GO nanohybrid membranes via thermally induced phase separation method

Zhong-Kun Li,Wan-Zhong Lang,Wei Miao,Xi Yan,Ya-Jun Guo

Graphene oxide (GO), one of the most promising filter materials, is intensively employed to prepare the membranes via non-solvent induced phase separation(NIPS) method, but it has not been found to modify polymeric membranes via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method. In this work, the derivative of GO, SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid , is fabricated and employed to synthesize PVDF/SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid membranes via TIPS method for the first time. The results indicate that the PVDF/SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid membranes experience liquid-liquid phase separation mechanism, and exhibit bi-continual and asymmetric structure. The included SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid is uniformly dispersed in the membrane matrix. With the addition of SiO 2 @GO, the top surface becomes denser and the pore size decreases; but overhigh SiO 2 @GO addition for membrane M-5 triggers in the adverse trend. This is caused by the combined actions of nucleation and growth of PVDF and viscosity increase of cast solution due to the addition SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid. The BSA rejection of membrane gradually increases with the addition of PVDF/SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid accompanied with the decline of pure water permeation flux. As the SiO 2 @GO content increases to 0.9   wt%, the PVDF/SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid membrane M-4 presents the highest BSA rejection of 91.7% and the lowest permeation flux of 182.6   L   m −2   h −1   bar −1 . However, the overhigh SiO 2 @GO addition (1.2   wt%) leads to the outstanding pure water permeation flux of 679.1   L   m −2   h −1   bar −1 and a much lower BSA rejection. The addition of PVDF/SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid evidently improves the surface hydrophilicity and antifouling ability of resultant membranes. The XRD patterns and FTIR spectra of membranes verify the exclusive α-phase of PVDF, and the melting temperature( T m ) and crystallinity( x c ) evidently increase with the addition of SiO 2 @GO nanohybrid up to 0.9   wt% in the dopes. Overhigh SiO 2 @GO addition (1.2   wt%) leads to small decline for these parameters.

One-step fabricated bionic PVDF ultrafiltration membranes exhibiting innovative antifouling ability to the cake fouling

Xinzhen Zhao,Changkun Liu

In view of the excellent application properties of the bionic materials, a novel polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane with regular nanoscale papillae on the membrane surface imitating the mosquito eye structures was fabricated by one-step molding method. The amphiphilic wetting agent (EW-326) was used in the membrane preparation process for the generation of numerous papillae with the diameter of 200–300   nm by adjusting the phase separation process during the membrane formation. The test results of filtration fouling showed that the bionic PVDF membrane exhibited different fouling resistances between the adhesive pollutants (e.g. bovine serum albumin, BSA) and the cake layer pollutants (e.g. sodium alginate , SA) due to the different fouling layers formed on top of the papillae structure. The water flux recovery ratio (FRR) value of bionic PVDF membrane was still higher than 90% even after three fouling cycles with the SA pollutant solution. Meanwhile, this novel modified PVDF membrane also exhibited expected antifouling performance to the sewage. The novel preparation method of bionic membrane exhibits a significant effect for enhancing the antifouling performance of ultrafiltration process with cake layer formed, and can provide new insight into the formation of separation membranes with regulated surface structure.

Application of dopamine-modified halloysite nanotubes/PVDF blend membranes for direct dyes removal from wastewater

Guangyong Zeng,Zhongbin Ye,Yi He,Xi Yang,Jing Ma,Heng Shi,Ziliang Feng

Membrane technology has been successfully applied for the removal of dyes from wastewater in the textile industry. In this work, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were functionalized with dopamine (DA) firstly, and then a series of novel polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were prepared via blending with different dosages of DA grafted HNTs (D-A-HNTs). The characterizations of nanoparticles (NPs) confirmed the reaction between DA and HNTs. The morphologies of membranes were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), which indicated that D-A-HNTs had a good dispersity in membrane matrix and also improved the microstructure of membranes. The experimental results demonstrated that the D-A-HNTs modified membranes were presented to be more hydrophilic, with a pure water flux (PWF) as high as 42.2   L   m −2   h −1 , which increased by 80.3% compared with pure PVDF membrane. The dye rejection ratios were also improved after adding D-A-HNTs, which reached 86.5% for Direct Red 28, 85% for Direct Yellow 4 and 93.7% for Direct Blue 14, respectively. More importantly, the anti-fouling test revealed that the blend membranes showed excellent anti-fouling property after several cycles. As a result, this study could have a great potential to widen the applications of membrane to treat textile wastewater.

Constructing a novel zwitterionic surface of PVDF membrane through the assembled chitosan and sodium alginate

Haiye Wang,Xinzhen Zhao,Chunju He

A novel zwitterionic surface of PVDF membrane with significantly improved antifouling properties was prepared though pressure-assisted layer by layer self-assembly method based on the electrostatic interactions of chitosan (CS), sodium alginate (SA) and polyfunctional lysine. For the modified C-S-C-S-L membrane, the contact angle decreased to 35°, the bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption mass of static fouling on the membrane surface decreased to 10   μg/cm 2 , and the secondary water flux recovery rate (FRR) of dynamic fouling of BSA and humic acid (HA) pollutants increased to 98% and 99%, respectively, exhibiting excellent antifouling performance. The results demonstrated that using charged bio-macromolecules and amino acids to build zwitterionic surface was effective and convenient to change the interface properties of the separation membrane through the pressure-assisted self-assembly modification method, and provided a new way for the industrial scale hydrophilic modification of hydrophobic porous membrane materials.

A novel antifouling and antibacterial surface-functionalized PVDF ultrafiltration membrane via binding Ag/SiO2 nanocomposites

Yang Pan,Zongxue Yu,Heng Shi,Qi Chen,Guangyong Zeng,Haihui Di,Xiaoqing Ren,Yi He

BACKGROUND Membrane fouling is a main obstacle hindering wider application of membrane technologies, and can cause a decline in flux and increased energy consumption, and more frequent chemical or membrane replacement can increase the operating costs. Membrane fouling is mainly governed by organic fouling and biofouling. In recent years, the development of new materials has provided new methods and thoughts for the research and development of antifouling and antibacterial membranes. RESULTS In this study, to obtain both a highly hydrophilic, antifouling and antibacterial poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane, in situ formed silver (Ag) nanoparticles were immobilized with silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles, and then chemically bound onto a PVDF ultrafiltration (UF) membrane surface. The surface modification processes were achieved through a remarkably facile and effective dip-coating method. The impacts of Ag/SiO 2 nanocomposites on membrane performance were investigated when applied in membrane filtration processes simultaneously. This membrane showed higher hydrophilicity and water permeation flux. The PVDF membrane exhibited antibacterial properties and displayed better anti-fouling performance. CONCLUSION The superior performance of the Ag/SiO 2 -PVDF membranes and this facile, effective and scalable modification method hold great promise for their practical application. This work would also be helpful for developing new antifouling and antibacterial membrane and related materials via a convenient and large-scale method. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

Sodium persulfate based PVDF membrane for concurrent advanced oxidation and ultrafiltration of ofloxacin in water

Guowen Wang,Dong Wang,Xiaoli Dong,Xiufang Zhang,Hongchao Ma

Flat Na 2 S 2 O 8 @PVDF-g-PDMAEMA/PVDF inorganic–organic composite membrane was prepared by sequential use of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), non-solvent induced phase inversion separation (NIPS) and post-dipping treatment. The membrane was tested in a membrane chemical reactor (MCR) system for concurrent advanced oxidation and ultrafiltration of ofloxacin (OFLX) under UV irradiation. Results indicated that the production of sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ) from persulfate can achieve 54% removal efficiency of OFLX, outperforming single advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) or ultrafiltration treatment. The best performance, was secondary to the combination of high redox potential of the SO 4 − , hydrophilicity of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and molecular cutoff of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane. This study also identified factors related to successfully preparing composite membranes with concurrent positive charges and hydrophilicity. Characterization using XRD, FTIR and EDS showed that introducing PDMAEMA into the polymer mixture and post-dipping were both required to obtain a multifunctional membrane, which can electrostatically attract negative S 2 O 8 2− species. Judging from SEM results, the formation mechanisms of the composite membrane structure were derived from instantaneous liquid–liquid demixing.

PEG/PVDF membranes for separating organosulphur compounds from n-heptane: Effect of PEG molecular weight

Wenling Hu,Xiaolong Han,Liangliang Liu,Xin Zhang,Juanqin Xue,Baoyi Wang,Peng Zhang,Xingzhong Cao

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) of three different molecular weights was used to prepare PEG/PVDF composite membranes for separating organosulphur compounds from n -heptane by pervaporation. All the composite membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS). The effects of operating temperature, feed sulphur content, and organosulphur species on performance of PEG/PVDF composite membranes with different molecular weights were investigated. When the feed organosulphur was thiophene, the fluxes decreased with an increase in PEG molecular weight, however, the enrichment factors were in a different order: PEG membrane with molecular weight of 35 000 exhibited the highest enrichment factor of 12.59 for thiophene at 85 °C. When the feed organosulphur was 2-methylthiophene or 2,5-dimethylthiophene, it was found that the PEG membrane with molecular weight of 100 000 showed the highest enrichment factor. The results showed that PEG molecular weight has a considerable effect on separation performance for pervaporation desulphurization.
