Structure-tailored poly(ionic liquid)s for recovery of gold from thiosulfate system

Yunchang Fan,Yafang Tian,Lei Yang,Yanhe Nie,Xinjia Wei,Haibao Zhu

Two types of poly(ionic liquids) (PILs), namely linear PILs (LPILs) and reticulated cross-linked network PILs (RPILs), were synthesized and evaluated for the adsorption of gold thiosulfate complex ([Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ] 3− ) from thiosulfate solutions. Experimental results showed that the adsorption of [Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ] 3− on the PILs followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption process was dominated by chemical adsorption. In terms of adsorption thermodynamics, the bromide-based LPIL fitted the Hill adsorption model, whereas the other PILs followed to the Freundlich model. The main interactions between the PILs and [Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ] 3− were electrostatic attraction and anion – π interactions, and ion exchange dominated the gold adsorption process. The RPILs exhibited higher gold adsorption capacities than the LPILs. However, gold desorption was more readily achieved with LPILs, primarily owing to their weaker affinity for gold species. In addition, the perchlorate-based LPIL showed good adsorption selectivity and recyclability toward [Au(S 2 O 3 ) 2 ] 3− . This study provides a promising strategy for the efficient separation and recovery of gold from thiosulfate media.

Engineering catalytic defects via molecular imprinting for high energy Li-S pouch cells

Zhao Yufei,Geng Chuannan,Wang Li,Cao Yun,Yang Haotian,Peng Linkai,Jiang Xin,Guo Yong,Ye Xiaolin,Lv Wei,Yang Quan-Hong

Heterogeneous catalysis promises to accelerate sulfur-involved conversion reactions in lithium-sulfur batteries. Solid-state Li2S dissociation remains as the rate-limiting step because of the weakly matched solid-solid electrocatalysis interfaces. We propose an electrochemically molecular-imprinting strategy to have a metal sulfide (MS) catalyst with imprinted defects in positions from which the pre-implanted Li2S has been electrochemically removed. Such tailor-made defects enable the catalyst to bind exclusively to Li atoms in Li2S reactant and elongate the Li–S bond, thus decreasing the reaction energy barrier during charging. The imprinted Ni3S2 catalyst shows the best activity due to the highest defect concentration among the MS catalysts examined. The Li2S oxidation potential is substantially reduced to 2.34 V from 2.96 V for the counterpart free of imprinted vacancies, and an Ah-level pouch cell is realized with excellent cycling performance. With a lean electrolyte/sulfur ratio of 1.80 μL mgS–1, the cell achieves a benchmarkedly high energy density beyond 500 Wh kg–1.

Branched poly(p-terphenylene 3-piperidinium)s for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis

Wenyuan Qiu,Xiaoke Wei,Tao Wang,Hao-yan Yin,Haibing Wei

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are central to clean-energy electrochemical technologies, yet achieving high hydroxide conductivity together with dimensional and alkaline stability remains challenging. Here we implement a straightforward branching strategy in poly(arylene 3-piperidinium)s by incorporating two trifunctional units, i.e., triptycene and 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, into the polymer backbone. This architecture suppresses water uptake and swelling without compromising the membrane's ion-transport efficiency and chemical durability. Compared to linear membranes, the branched membranes exhibit a 34−36% reduction in water absorption. Triptycene-based branched AEMs achieved superior performance, including suppressed swelling (<18% at 80 °C), high conductivity up to 191 mS cm −1  at 80 °C, and improved alkaline stability, remaining intact in 1 M NaOH for at least 2000 h. Importantly, a water electrolyzer based on B-PT3Pip-3%Trip demonstrated a current density of 6.9 A cm −2  at 2.0 V and 80 °C, and can operate stably under 1 A cm −2  at 60 °C for 1000 h with a voltage decay of only 81 μV h −1 . The synthetic simplicity of the branching strategy, together with the combination of suppressed swelling, high conductivity, and long-term durability, makes branched poly(arylene 3-piperidinium) AEMs highly promising for AEM water electrolysis applications.

S-vacancy defect engineering in CdS via hydrothermal acidification: Enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Jiaru Liu,Xinyi Lu,Zhe Liu,Wen Xin,Jinying Li,Chunwei Yang

Amidst the continuously growing global energy demand and increasingly severe environmental challenges, hydrogen energy has emerged as a promising clean alternative and is expected to play a critical role in the future energy landscape. Photocatalytic water splitting represents a transformative technology in the field of solar-to-hydrogen conversion. Driven by abundant sunlight and using water as the feedstock, it directly decomposes water into clean and renewable hydrogen gas with the assistance of photocatalysts. Among various photocatalysts, cadmium sulfide (CdS) has attracted considerable attention as a visible-light-responsive semiconductor with great potential for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Nevertheless, the practical deployment of CdS is still hindered by two major limitations: rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and inherent photochemical instability. In this work, sulfur vacancy-modified CdS (S v -CdS) was synthesized via a hydrothermal acidification method. The introduction of sulfur vacancies enables precise modulation of the electronic properties of CdS, resulting in a narrower bandgap (decreased from 2.77 eV to 2.08 eV) and a broader range of light absorption (extended from 474 nm to 599 nm). Furthermore, it significantly promotes the separation and mobility of photogenerated charge carriers. As a result, the S v -CdS catalyst exhibits substantially enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production activity. As a result, the Sv-CdS catalyst shows much stronger photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity with lactic acid acting as the sacrificial agent. Under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), the best-performing sulfur-deficient sample, S v -CdS-3, reaches a hydrogen evolution rate of 688.79 μmol g −1  h −1 , approximately 125 times higher than that of unmodified CdS (5.50 μmol g −1  h −1 ).

Construction of ZnIn₂S₄/Cu2O Z-scheme heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic tetracycline degradation

Mengnan Wang,Ruibin Zhang,Guizhen Chen,Rong Tan,Mingjin Zhang

In this study, a novel Z-type heterojunction photocatalyst ZnIn₂S₄/Cu 2 O was successfully constructed for the efficient degradation of tetracycline in aquatic environments. Flower-like ZnIn₂S₄ microspheres and cubic Cu 2 O were prepared via hydrothermal and water bath synthesis methods, respectively, and then composited through a solid-state pyrolysis-assisted ultrasonic dispersion method to form ZIC composites with different mass ratios (ZIC-2, ZIC-4, ZIC-6). Characterization results show that Cu 2 O nanoparticles are uniformly loaded onto the surface of ZnIn₂S₄ microspheres, forming a close heterojunction interface. Under visible light irradiation, ZIC-4 achieved a TC degradation efficiency of 91.2% within 60 min, significantly outperforming pristine ZnIn₂S₄ and Cu 2 O. Photoelectrochemical tests indicate that the Z-type heterojunction effectively promotes the separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and suppresses charge carrier recombination. Radical trapping experiments and EPR tests confirm that superoxide radicals (·O₂ − ) and holes (h + ) are the main reactive species. The composite also exhibits good photostability and recyclability, providing a novel and efficient photocatalytic material for visible-light-driven removal of antibiotic pollutants from water.

Boosting photo-Fenton degradation via high-selectivity singlet oxygen-induced S-scheme heterojunction

Ximan Wang,Yanshu Chen,Dehui Bian,Sigen A,Wenyue Zhao,Yunfeng Wu,Siqi Bao,Yingchen Duan

Novel Yb-BiOI/Ce-MgAl-LDH S-scheme heterojunction boosts photo-Fenton degradation. • Substrate molecular orbitals govern the selective 1 O 2 -dominated degradation. • S-scheme heterojunction achieves 100% TC-HCl degradation within 20 min. • The system demonstrates excellent environmental adaptability and stability. • Photocatalytic mechanism elucidated via experiments and DFT calculations. Developing highly selective catalytic systems remains a grand challenge in advanced water remediation. A novel S-scheme Yb-BiOI/Ce-MgAl-LDH heterojunction was rationally designed to synergistically boost photo-Fenton degradation via targeted singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation. Unambiguously validated by in situ XPS and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the S-scheme charge-transfer pathway efficiently accelerated spatial carrier separation while preserving maximum redox potentials. Consequently, the composite rapidly degraded the parent tetracycline hydrochloride within 20 min and achieved a mineralization efficiency of 52.5%, exhibiting outstanding degradation performance. Crucially, mechanism studies and density functional theory analyses have demonstrated that this highly selective reaction process, driven primarily by 1 O 2 as the dominant reactive oxygen species, is essentially determined by the energy levels of the specific molecular orbitals of the substrate. Pathway elucidation, coupled with in silico predictions and empirical phytotoxicity bioassays, comprehensively confirmed the substantial reduction in intermediate ecotoxicity. Ultimately, the scientific value of this work lies in providing deep mechanistic insights into S-scheme-driven selective oxidation, offering a robust and sustainable paradigm for designing targeted detoxification systems in wastewater treatment. Targeting viral Fe-S clusters with TEMPOL confers broad-spectrum anti-coronavirus activity

Leyu Hu,Lexi Gao,Xingwei Fu,Zesheng Rong,Yue Cheng,Yuhan Hou,Lu Han,Xin Ran,Guiwen Guan,Ting Zhou,Lingling Chang,Xiaomin Zhao,Qian Du,Yong Huang,Dewen Tong,Mingjun Zhu

PEDV infection induces intracellular iron accumulation in host cells. • Iron promotes CoV replication by enhancing Fe-S cluster-dependent RdRp activity. • TEMPOL suppresses CoV replication by disrupting viral Fe-S cluster integrity. • TEMPOL exhibits broad-spectrum anti-CoV activity in vitro and in vivo. • TEMPOL effectively counteracts iron-exacerbated viral pathogenesis in vivo. Coronaviruses (CoVs) can cause severe respiratory and enteric diseases, posing major threats to human health and the livestock industry. However, the host metabolic mechanisms underlying viral replication remain unclear. Using porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) as the primary model, this study investigated the role of iron metabolism in CoV replication and its mechanisms. Our results showed that PEDV infection markedly induced intracellular iron accumulation, while exogenous iron supplementation enhanced viral replication and iron chelation suppressed it. Mechanistically, iron enhances viral replication by promoting the formation of iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters, essential cofactors for the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). Based on these findings, we further evaluated the antiviral activity of TEMPOL, a small molecule targeting viral Fe-S clusters. TEMPOL reduced RdRp activity and effectively inhibited PEDV replication. Moreover, TEMPOL exhibited broad-spectrum antiviral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), and porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV). Importantly, TEMPOL effectively reversed FAC-promoted viral pathogenesis, alleviating tissue lesions and clinical symptoms across multiple CoV animal models. Collectively, this study reveals a key role of iron metabolism in CoV replication and suggests that targeting viral Fe-S clusters may provide a novel strategy for anti-CoV therapy against diverse CoVs.

Fabrication of TiO2-WO3 S-Scheme Heterojunction for High-Efficiency Visible-Light Photocatalysis

Yang Deng,Shuhong Wu,Jun Zhu

Driven by the progress of sustainable development, environmental remediation and water treatment have become increasingly important. Photocatalysis, capable of degrading pollutants through light (especially visible light) irradiation, has received widespread research attention. Titanium dioxide(TiO2) is a promising photocatalyst, yet its practical use is limited by low visible-light utilization and rapid photogenerated charge recombination. Herein, an S-scheme TiO2-WO3(Tungsten trioxide) heterojunction was successfully fabricated; the difference in Fermi levels induces a built-in electric field directed from TiO2to WO3, which thus constructs the S-scheme heterojunction. The as-prepared heterojunction exhibits a markedly enhanced transient photocurrent density, with the carrier lifetime prolonged from 2.69 ns to 41.61 ns. Under visible-light irradiation, the heterojunction achieves a methylene blue (MB) removal efficiency of over 95% within 90 min, and its pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constantkreaches 0.032 min−1, which is approximately 16 times that of pure TiO2. Radical trapping experiments confirm that the dominant active species responsible for the catalytic process are photogenerated holes and the hydroxyl radicals derived therefrom.

Construction and photocatalytic degradation of CdS-WO3 S-scheme heterojunction modified by CQDs

Cunxin Wei,Yiheng Cao,Haitao Li,Xinyue Jiang,Tianyi Zhang,Bin Zhang,Huiping Qi,Yan Liu

A CdS-WO 3 S-scheme heterojunction material modified by CQDs was constructed through simple methods, which effectively increases the photocatalytic degradation rate of single CdS. In the composite material, CdS acts as a reducing photocatalyst (RP) and WO 3 acts as an oxidizing photocatalyst (OP), forming an S-scheme heterojunction. In order to solve the photocorrosion problem of CdS, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were loaded onto CdS. The CQDs possess a high work function, enabling them to facilitate electron transfer, enhance the migration of photogenerated carriers, and suppress electron-hole pair recombination, thus improving photocatalytic performance. The characterizations of XRD, TEM, element mapping, and XPS confirmed the successful synthesis of the CQDs-CdS-WO 3 composite. The material not only exhibited a photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 89.7% and 58.8% towards norfloxacin and tetracycline, respectively, but also revealed a certain degradation capability toward methylene blue and methyl orange. The primary active substances relevant in this degradation process are h + , 1 O 2 , H 2 O 2 , • O 2 − , and • OH. After multiple cyclic experiments, the material still maintains stable crystalline structure and degradation activity. Therefore, the successful preparation of this composite material provides a new method for photocatalytic decomposition of antibiotics and organic dyes.

Antifouling sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone)s composite nanofiltration membranes prepared by coating

Hao Chen,Haoji Lao,Libin Wang,Qin Wang,Guyu Xiao

Coating the charged aromatic polymers on ultrafiltration membranes is a feasible strategy to fabricate antifouling nanofiltration (NF) membranes. However, these NF membranes haven’t achieved high rejection and also are very limited because such polymers should be soluble in commonly polar solvents. Sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone)s (sPAEKs) generally show poor solubility in commonly polar solvents due to their rigid polymer backbones, thus they could not be employed as the coating materials of NF membranes at present. Herein, the soluble sPAEKs in commonly polar solvents are synthesized by attaching methyl side groups to their polymer backbones. Accordingly, these sPAEKs could be coated on ultrafiltration membranes to prepare the antifouling NF membranes. Moreover, the Lewis acid-base interactions between the carbonyl and cation of the sPAEKs coating layer could improve rejection. Besides, their hydrophilic sPAEKs coating layer is favorable for improving permeability. Therefore, the sPAEKs coating layer endows the as-made membrane with excellent nanofiltration performances, such as an antibiotic rejection of 98%, a flux of 31.8 LMH/bar, an antibiotic/NaCl selectivity of 43.6, and a flux recovery rate of 98% for the foulant of bovine serum albumin. It still showed excellent resistance to chlorine oxidation because of the aromatic backbone of the sPAEKs coating layer. This fabrication strategy paves a facile way to achieve high performance NF membranes.

Revealing Ferroptosis Induction by Bisphenol A and Bisphenol S through Distinct Protein Targets

Yanwei Wang,Jiahui Zhao,Yong Chen,Xuesong Liu,Tengfei Xu,Mingliang Fang

Chronic bisphenol exposure is a recognized disruptor of liver function, and although ferroptosis has been implicated, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly defined. Here, integrative chemical proteomics and untargeted metabolomics were used to elucidate mechanisms of ferroptosis induced by bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) in hepatic cells. BPA elicited a pronounced ferroptotic phenotype, whereas BPS elicited a moderate phenotype in hepatocytes. Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and pyruvate kinase M2 isoform (PKM2) were identified as critical targets, respectively. Validation through cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and molecular docking confirmed that BPA specifically binds to GPX4 (KD = 37.6 μM), while BPS exhibits moderate affinity for PKM2 (KD = 14.4 μM). Functional rescue experiments demonstrated that GPX4 overexpression effectively reversed BPA-induced ferroptosis and partially alleviated BPS-induced effects, whereas PKM2 overexpression specifically mitigated BPS-triggered cytotoxicity. Mechanistically, BPA inhibited GPX4 activity, impairing lipid peroxide detoxification and triggering ferroptosis; BPS suppressed PKM2, promoting glucose flux toward the methylglyoxal (MGO) pathway, depleting glutathione, and activating oxidative stress, thereby inducing ferroptosis indirectly. This study clarifies bisphenol-induced ferroptosis via target heterogeneity, providing mechanistic insights that may inform future safety evaluations.

Conferring Poly(ionic liquid)s with High Surface Areas for Enhanced Catalytic Activity

Hongbing Song,Yongjie Wang,Yule Liu,Lei Chen,Bingxiao Feng,Xin Jin,Yu Zhou,Tingting Huang,Meng Xiao,Fangmin Huang,Hengjun Gai

Three ionic liquid (IL) monomers consisting of one, two, and four benzene rings were designed with 2-phenylimidazole and polymerized with α,α′-dichloro-p-xylene (DCX) and formaldehyde dimethyl acetal (FDA) to form a series of novel poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs). In this process, the designed ILs were employed as active ionic sites, and DCX and FDA were selected as cross-linkers. Self-condensation of the cross-linker provided a large specific surface area for the hypercross-linked organic framework, while co-condensation between the cross-linker and IL introduced active sites to the framework. The obtained porous hypercross-linked PILs not only promoted CO2 capture and the selective absorption of CO2/N2 but also showed good activity for the cycloaddition of epoxide with CO2. HP-[BZPhIm]Cl-DCX-1 with a large surface area (763 m2·g–1) showed a CO2 uptake capacity of 1.47 mmol·g–1 and offered a 98.9% yield of the CO2 cycloaddition product with epichlorohydrin at 80 °C for 24 h under 0.1 MPa CO2 pressure. The designed PILs provide an important reaction for CO2 utilization.
