Due to the high agglomerate propensity of Si particles, making aluminum composites with a dispersion of the reinforcement using traditional way is still a challenge. In this study, an innovative approach was utilized to prevent the agglomeration of particles using encapsulating graphene sheets by grinding. Afterwards, the milled mixtures were incorporated with Cr-coated graphite flakes, urea and starch via mechanical mixing. After being mechanically mixed and sintered at 330 °C, the porous preform was fabricated by vacuum gas pressure infiltration. Effects of graphene content (0.5, 1, 3, 5 wt%) on the microstructures and properties of thermal and mechanical were investigated. Thermal conductivity and bending strength of the graphite flakes (G f )/Si/Al composites increased by 41.4 and 300%, respectively compared to the specimens without graphene. G f /Si/Al composites with graphene mass fraction of 5% had excellent in-plane thermal conductivity of 346 W/mK and bending strength of 84 Mpa, suggesting the composites can be applied as promising thermal management materials.

Various graphene-based Si nanocomposites have been reported to improve the performance of active materials in Li-ion batteries. However, these candidates still yield severe capacity fading due to the electrical disconnection and fractures caused by the huge volume changes over extended cycles. Therefore, we have designed a novel three-dimensional cross-linked graphene and single-wall carbon nanotube structure to encapsulate the Si nanoparticles. The synthesized three-dimensional structure is attributed to the excellent self-assembly of carbon nanotubes with graphene oxide as well as a thermal treatment process at 900 °C. This special structure provides sufficient void spaces for the volume expansion of Si nanoparticles and channels for the diffusion of ions and electrons. In addition, the cross-linking of the graphene and single-wall carbon nanotubes also strengthens the stability of the structure. As a result, the volume expansion of the Si nanoparticles is restrained. The specific capacity remains at 1450 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 200 mA g−1. This well-defined three-dimensional structure facilitates superior capacity and cycling stability in comparison with bare Si and a mechanically mixed composite electrode of graphene, single-wall carbon nanotubes and silicon nanoparticles.

Rational chemical substitution is an effective way to regulate structure and enrich property. Herein, a new noncentrosymmetric borosilicate, Ba2ScBSi2O9, was successfully synthesized by substituting CaO6 units in Ba2CaB2Si4O14 with ScO6 octahedra, with comparatively strong covalency. This substitution not only effectively prevents polymerization of the B–O groups, resulting in an intriguing structural transformation from tetrahedral-coordinated borosilicate of Ba2CaB2Si4O14 to mixed-coordinated borosilicate Ba2ScBSi2O9, but also enhances its second harmonic generation response (2 × KDP), that is nearly four times higher than its parent structure while keeping a short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge (λcutoff < 190 nm). In addition, the polar space group of Pca21 for Ba2ScBSi2O9 achieves its ferroelectric polarization reversal capability, which makes quasi-phase-matching technology possible to counteract the nonphase-matching caused by small birefringence of silicates. This work indicates the unique role of heterovalent substitution in regulating structure and performance, providing new insights for exploring borosilicate with versatile functionality.

Reactive polyurethane (RPU) films in a solvent-free medium exhibit exceptional stability and mechanical properties due to their highly cross-linked structure. Achieving inherent fire resistance, waterproofing, and high mechanical performance in RPUs is challenging. Here, we prepared an intrinsic flame retardant, waterproof, and flexible RPU using a P/Si synergistic system with hydroxylated ammonium polyphosphate aAPP/Si-RPU via in-situ polyaddition of NCO-double capped prepolymer and polyol components, including polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and aAPP. The aAPP was synthesized through cation exchange between diethylene glycol amine (DGA) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP). Compared to pure RPU, aAPP/Si 15% -RPU showed a 60.3 % reduction in peak heat release rate (pk-HRR) and a 14.1 % reduction in total heat release (THR), with the limiting oxygen index (LOI) increasing from 18.2 % to 27.8 %. Mechanical properties and hydrophobicity improved, with tensile strength at 31.9 ± 1.9 MPa, elongation at break at 522.7 ± 20.3 %, and a water contact angle of 127.1°. The balance of properties was due to ordered microphase separation from the organic–inorganic hybrid structure of aAPP and PDMS, where aAPP particles enhanced microstructure and crosslinked interactions, and the Si-O bond in PDMS provided flexibility and water resistance. This study presents a strategy to resolve the conflict between rigidity and toughness, offering design ideas for intrinsic flame retardant polyurethane.

In laser illumination, there is considerable interest in phosphor-converted laser diodes that boast high efficiency and exceptional thermal stability. Phosphor-in-glass (PiG) and phosphor-in-glass film (PiF) are highly favored for their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and ease of fabrication. To tackle the issue of low thermal conductivity of glass, a novel lithium–aluminum–silicate glass is innovatively developed. This glass induces the precipitation of spodumene crystalline phase, enhancing material stability. Utilizing solid-state sintering techniques, Y 3 Al 3.5 Ga 1.5 O 12 :Ce 3+ (YAGG:Ce) PiG is fabricated, which exhibited a luminous flux (LF) of 866.76 lm under 450 nm blue light with 3.88 W input power. Benefiting from the high thermal conductivity of sapphire substrate and the high-intensity glass system, YAGG:Ce PiF demonstrated a saturation threshold of 10.20 W, yielding an impressive LF of 2178.1 lm, which is 2.5 times that of PiG samples. Notably, the thermal conductivity increased significantly from 2.2 W m −1 K −1 (PiG) to 7.0 W m −1 K −1 (PiF), surpassing traditional organic resin materials. To validate the practicality of the two-color converters, it integrates them into both starlight lamp and laser flashlight modules for encapsulation, thereby generating attractive green light in various environments. This design holds the potential to become the ideal choice for the next generation of high-power, high-brightness laser illumination.

To improve the storage stability and conductivity of aluminum powder in an aqueous environment, the surface of aluminum powder was treated to form silica film by the sol–gel method, then was treated with conductive modification to introduce nanocarbon black particles so that conductive aluminum powder could be prepared to solve the application bottleneck of aluminum powder in water-borne heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings. The structure, surface morphology, and composition of the modified aluminum powder were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The corrosion resistance and electrochemical properties were measured using a hydrogen evolution test and an 2electrochemical test. The results showed that there was a compact SiO2film formed on the surface of the prepared conductive aluminum powder, and the conductive filler nanocarbon black was uniformly grafted on the surface. According to the hydrogen evolution test at 100 h/50 °C, conductive aluminum powder with 5 wt% carbon black exhibited the best hydrogen evolution effect, with a hydrogen evolution amount of only 0.5 mL. The prepared conductive aluminum powder was applied to the water-borne coatings, and the storage stability test, electrochemical polarization test, and neutral salt spray test were further conducted. The water-borne coatings prepared with conductive aluminum powder still showed good performance and had no reaction after 6 months of storage. Compared with the coating containing SiO2-modified aluminum powder, the coating exhibited better corrosion resistance.

In this study, Zr-modified Si-O-C precursor ceramics were prepared using three-dimensional (3D) printing. Ceramic sintering was completed by printing four precursors containing different zirconium acetylacetone contents. Comparative analysis was conducted on the ceramic yield, size shrinkage, mechanical properties, and microstructure. The results showed that the ceramic yield and size shrinkage of the four samples were increased with the increasing zirconium acetylacetone contents. The sample containing 30 wt% zirconium acetylacetone exhibited good compressive performance, with a compressive strength of 50.2 ± 0.6 MPa. Cracks were observed on the surface of samples containing 40 wt% zirconium acetylacetone, while those containing 10, 20, and 30 wt% zirconium acetylacetone were relatively intact. Therefore, a stable Si-Zr-O-C precursor ceramic with good mechanical properties, which can be used for 3D printing, was obtained.

Robust, self-healing waterborne coatings have become the preferred choice in the field of flexible electronic devices owing to their outstanding compliance, restorability, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, most of the existing self-healing waterborne polymers exhibit viscoelasticity, irreversible fatigue damage, and the challenge of reconciling self-healing functions with mechanical properties, all stemming from inherent molecular structure contradictions between flexibility and rigidity. Here, we propose a novel strategy that utilizes a nanofiller with dynamic reversible bonds to overcome the self-healing limitations that theoretically demand flexible chain, for achieving both mechanical robustness and self-healing ability in the waterborne polyurethane (WPU) hybrid coating system. We modified tetrapropyl zirconate (TPOZ) with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to enhance compatibility between the matrix and inorganic particles, while the formation of dynamic reversible bonds through both condensation hydrolysis endows the self-healing abilities. The WPU hybrid coating was designed by covalently incorporating amino-modified TPOZ (A-ZrO 2 ) into a glycinamide-functionalized WPU network, conferring excellent fracture energy (50.3 kJ/m 2 ), elastic recovery, along with antistatic capability to the coating. Furthermore, the hybrid coating maintains a robust mechanical performance alongside 92.58 % of healing efficiency, exhibiting a potential for flexible electronics application. The hybridization strategy via incorporation of the nanofillers with hard but reversible covalent bond resolves the inherent robustness-healing trade-off, providing exciting thoughts to expand WPU applications.

This paper develops a novel adhesive for in-situ joining C/C composites to C/C-SiC composites using a phenolic resin modified with inert fillers (SiC and graphite powders). The primary phase of the reaction bonding joint layer is SiC, which matches the thermal expansion coefficient of the matrix better than metallic phases, making it an improvement over traditional brazing. The effect of filler content on joint strength, oxidation resistance, and thermal shock resistance has been systematically investigated. The results show that increasing the filler content from 0 to 50 wt% increases shear strength up to a maximum of 25.97 MPa at 15 wt% SiC and 15 wt% graphite powder. The oxidation and thermal shock tests reveal that the joints exhibit a decrease in shear strength due to oxidation at temperatures above 600 °C, with a significant reduction occurring between 600 °C and 700 °C. After seven thermal shock cycles at 800 °C, the shear strength of the joints remains relatively high, indicating the good thermal shock resistance of the bonding layer. The method proposed in this study provides a new approach for controlling residual silicon and enhancing the properties of C/C-SiC joints.

Inorganic materials can solve transportable and on-site hydrolytic hydrogen generation issues. CaH 2 /(Al/Si) composites are preferable due to their notable chemical properties. However, these composites require pretreatments, an inert environment, and long hours of physical ball milling for high homogeneity and synergistic effects. CaH 2 also inhibits the hydrolysis reaction by forming its products on the Al/Si surface, which hinders the direct utilization of composites. This work represents the first investigation of NaH-CaH 2 (Al/Si) fuel composites, which greatly overcome these limitations and can be directly used for on-site hydrogen generation and proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The NaH-CaH 2 (Al/Si) fuel composites were prepared by using a straightforward mixing method with variable composition ratios, showing high H 2 yield and fuel cell (FC) performance. NaH addition provides the bridge effect, which opens up a new way to enable efficient hydrolysis and greatly enhances the hydrolysis activity of CaH 2 /(Al/Si) composites. The novel fuel composites (NaH-CaH 2 /Al) have extraordinary FC performance and a 0.42 W/cm 2 peak power density greater than commercial hydrogen generators. It provides high H 2 yield 84.4 % for NaH-CaH 2 /Al and 82 % for NaH-CaH 2 /Si compared to NaOH-CaH 2 (Al/Si), NaCl-CaH 2 (Al/Si), and KCl-CaH 2 (Al/Si) composites. The NaH bridge effect hinders the direct water contact and stops the formation of Ca(OH) 2 around Al/Si, which provides adequate pathways for the CaH 2 (Al/Si) hydrolysis. The impressive capabilities of novel fuel composites are anticipated to offer practical uses in fuel cells, automobile applications, and portable/on-board H 2 generation.

Silicon (Si) stands as a premier anode candidate for next-generation lithium-ion batteries, yet its commercialization is impeded by substantial volume expansion and concomitant side reactions. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), leveraging their high aspect ratio and exceptional conductivity, form long-range conductive networks that mitigate electrode bulk variation, suppress repetitive SEI formation, and accelerate electrochemical kinetics. However, the critical role of the interaction between CNTs and binders is normally neglected in previous studies. In this work, we first decipher that the weak interfacial adhesion between rigid CNTs and binders, coupled with insufficient bonding sites, is a significant factor causing mechanical failure of Si anodes. Furthermore, we design a reinforced CNT–binder interface via robust interfacial hydrogen bonds between carboxylated CNTs (COOH-CNTs) and lithiated poly(acrylic acid) (Li-PAA) binders, achieving a mechanically resilient Si electrode. The resultant electrode exhibits an enhanced strain tolerance and reduced impedance during fast charging. Consequently, the COOH-CNT-modified nano-Si anode delivers significantly enhanced electrochemical performance, retaining 68.8% capacity after 300 cycles at 2 A g–1. This work establishes interfacial chemistry engineering of CNT additives as a critical strategy for developing high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

Monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells (PSTSCs) offer a promising path to surpass the efficiency limits of single-junction photovoltaics at low production costs. However, interface defects and current mismatch between subcells continue to limit their full performance potential, particularly in the silicon heterojunction (HJT) bottom cell. To address this issue, we propose a Nafion-based edge isolation treatment followed by thermal curing to suppress interfacial recombination and improve carrier selectivity in the HJT structure. In this study, we demonstrate that this approach enhances the bottom cell efficiency to 23.53 %, with a short-circuit current density (J sc ) of 39.75 mA/cm 2 , an increase in open-circuit voltage (V oc ) from 709 to 728 mV, and an improvement in fill factor (FF) from 72.81 % to 81.28 %. Incorporating this optimized HJT bottom cell into a 2-terminal perovskite/HJT tandem configuration, we achieved a power conversion efficiency of 28.84 % over a 1 cm 2 active area. These results highlight the importance of interface engineering in boosting tandem performance and optimizing the fabrication process for PSTSCs toward industrial integration.
