TiO2 nanoparticle has been considered as a safe sunscreen agent to reduce the skin cancer risk when exposed to sunlight. However, recently it was found that TiO2 particles accelerate the photodamage of skin due to their photocatalytic degradation activity. To effectively eradicate this unwanted effect, we present a new strategy toward the preparation of organic/inorganic hybrid polymer/TiO2 nanoparticles with highly effective UV-screening property but eliminated photocatalytic activity. We prepared new polymer micelles with corona–shell–core structure based on self-assembly of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(styrene) (PEO-b-PDMA-b-PS) triblock copolymer. Selective deposition of hydrophobic tetrabutyl titanate (TBT) in the PDMA shell in polar solvent leads to a thin PDMA/TiO2 hybrid layer (∼8 nm), which can not only effectively reflect UV rays but also eliminate its photocatalytic ability to protect skin. The sol–gel reactions of TBTs in the PS core domain lead to a PS/TiO2 hybrid core, which can also absorb/reflect UV lights by PS/TiO2. The biocompatible PEO coronas can prevent direct contact of TiO2 with skin. Moreover, sol–gel reactions in the PDMA and PS domains can stabilize the triblock copolymer micelles, which offer the promising potential for further formulations in aqueous solution. The ATRP kinetics confirmed that PEO-b-PDMA-b-PS triblock copolymer can be synthesized in one pot, which simplified the synthetic procedure of copolymers. TEM and DLS studies revealed the morphology and size of self-assembled polymer micelles and the subsequent polymer/TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles upon sol–gel reactions. UV experiments confirmed the highly efficient UV screening activity but eliminated photocatalytic property of polymer/TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles. For example, at extremely low TiO2 content in solution (10 ppm of polymer/TiO2 solid), ∼70% UV radiation can be blocked compared to pure organic polymer micelle, which is also much more efficient than commercially available TiO2 nanoparticles (P25). UV and DLS studies confirmed the ultrahigh stability of polymer/TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles upon strong UV radiation, which is suitable for long-term applications. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption experiment revealed that the ultralow surface area of TiO2 nanoparticles (1.6 m2 g–1) is consistent with their extremely poor photocatalytic performance.

A series of bio-based unsaturated polyesters was synthesized by melt polycondensation of itaconic acid with 1,4-butanediol and glycerol. Their chemical structures were confirmed by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, acid and hydroxyl values. Waterborne UV curable dispersion coatings based on these polyesters and acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) were formulated. The average particle size and their stability before curing as well as the coating properties after curing, including adhesion, flexibility, pencil hardness and solvent resistance, were investigated. Results demonstrated that the glycerol segment in the polyesters together with AESO led to the excellent coating properties in terms of highest grade of adhesion (5B), 0T flexibility, pencil hardness of 5H and excellent solvent resistance (no appearance change after 250 double rubs with ethanol and acetone). This work provided us the coating systems combining the merits of being bio-based, UV-curable and water dispersible.

In this study, UV-curable epoxy acrylate film was reinforced with benzyl triphenyl phosphorus chloride-intercalated vermiculite (BTPC-VMT). BTPC-VMT was prepared by intercalating benzyl triphenyl phosphorus chloride (BTPC) into vermiculite (VMT) and was used as reinforcing filler. Then, X-ray diffraction and Scanning electronic microscope results of hybrid films indicated that BTPC-VMT was well dispersed in the matrix. The hybrid films displayed enhanced tensile strength, impact strength, and pencil hardness without sacrificing elongation at break. Moreover, the thermal property of hybrid films was generally improved. The resulting hybrid films are promising for a number of applications, e.g. for metal and wood for their surface protection.

Bisphenol A-based epoxy acrylate (BABEA), a commercial ultraviolet (UV)-curable material, was introduced as a new manufacturing material for facile fabrication of epoxy-functionalized micro-zone plates through UV-initiated copolymerization using glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as the functional monomer. The poly (BABEA- co -GMA) was highly transparent in visible range while highly opaque when the wavelength is less than 295 nm, and of high replication fidelity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS) results indicated the existence of epoxy groups on the surface of the poly (BABEA- co -GMA), which allowed for binding protein through an epoxy-amino group reaction. A fabrication procedure was proposed for manufacturing BABEA based epoxy-functionalized micro-zone plates. The fabrication procedure was very simple; obviating the need of micromachining equipments, wet etching or imprinting techniques. To evaluate the BABEA-based epoxy-functionalized micro-zone plates, α-fetoprotein (AFP) was immobilized onto the capture zone for chemiluminescent (CL) detection in a noncompetitive immune response format. The proposed AFP immunoaffinity micro-zone plate was demonstrated as a low cost, flexible, homogeneous, and stable assay for α-fetoprotein (AFP). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Two kinds of UV-curable polyurethane acrylates (PCDL-H-PUA and PCDL-P-PUA) were synthesized starting with polycarbonate diols (PCDL), isophorone diisocyanate and dimethylolpropionic acid and terminated with hydroxyethyl methacrylate or pentaerythritol triacrylate to impart mono-methacrylate or tri-acrylate end-group functionality, respectively. The structures and properties of the products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and thermogravimetric analysis. The average molecular weights were between 7500 and 9300 g/mol, and the thermal properties of the products were excellent. The influence of the functionality of the end-capping functional group on the UV-curing behavior was investigated using real-time spectroscopy. Results showed that curing rate and conversion of PCDL-P-PUA were higher than those of PCDL-H-PUA, and the final double bond conversion of the polymers reached 95 %. PCDL-H-PUA and PCDL-P-PUA were applied to negative photoresists as the main film resin. The resolution of the optimal photoresist reached 40 µm.

A novel type of UV-curing silicone rubber was prepared via thiol-ene click reaction by using high-molecular-weight polydimethylsiloxane containing vinyl groups as the gum, polymercaptopropylmethylsiloxane as crosslinker, TS-530 SiO 2 as reinforcing filler and 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone as photoinitiator. The obtained UV-curing silicone rubbers were transparent. The thermomechanical properties of resulting silicone rubbers were studied using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Meanwhile, the mechanical property and thermal stability of the silicone rubber were also determined. Experimental results showed that the thiol-ene click reaction can be used as the alternative curing system to prepare the silicone rubber.

In order to realize the controlled release and limited toxicity of triclosan (TC), a degradable UV-crosslinked hydrogel was prepared. For this purpose, the acryloyl chloride-modified polyactide-poly(ethylene glycol)-polylactide block copolymer was firstly synthesized and then mixed with photoinitiator to form the hydrogel rapidly under a low-intensity UV light. The properties of hydrogel, such as hydrogel strength, swelling and degradation, had been studied. The results showed that the properties of hydrogel could be modulated by the concentration of copolymer. After the encapsulation of TC, the sustained-release capability and antibacterial effect of the obtained hydrogel were studied. It was found that the sustained release of TC could potentially reduce the side effects of TC. With controlled antibacterial activity, the use of TC would be safer and more efficient. Moreover, the biocompatibility of hydrogel was also evaluated by in vitro and in vivo assays, suggesting the great potential application in the delivery of TC. The novel aspects of this study include the cytotoxicity study and the in vitro and in vivo assays, which might be useful for other researchers in this field.

This study aimed to investigate the incorporation of rutin into electrospun pullulan and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers to obtain ultraviolet (UV)-resistant properties. The effect of weight ratios between pullulan and PVA, and the addition of rutin on the nanofibers’ morphology and diameters were studied and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis was utilized to investigate the interaction between pullulan and PVA, as well as with rutin. The results showed that the inclusion of PVA results in the increase in the fiber’s diameter. The addition of rutin had no obvious effect on the fibers’ average diameters when the content of rutin was less than 7.41%. FTIR results indicated that a hydrogen bond formed between pullulan and PVA, also between these polymers and rutin. Moreover, the addition of rutin could enhance the mechanical properties due to its stiff structure and could decrease the transmittance of UVA and UVB to be fewer than 5%; meanwhile, the value of ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) reached more than 40 and 50 when the content of rutin was 4.46% and 5.67%, respectively. Therefore, the electrospun pullulan/PVA/rutin nanofibrous mats showed excellent UV resistance and have potential applications in anti-ultraviolet packaging and dressing materials. Keywords:pullulan;rutin;electrospinning;nanofiber;UV resistance

To bond untreated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate, a novel UV-/moisture-curable silicone-modified poly(urethane–acrylate) (SiPUA) oligomer was synthesized from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), hydroxypropyl silicone oil, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and other additives, and the structure of synthesized oligomer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Adhesive formulas were developed using the synthesized oligomer, N , N -dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), tetrahydro furfuryl alcohol (THFA) and active amine acted as reactive diluents; 1-hydroxy-cyclohexylphenyl-ketone (C-184) and benzophenone (BP) acted as photoinitiators; dehydrating agent, defoamer, flow agent and nanometer inorganic filler acted as additives. The compositions that can be cured by exposure to ultraviolet and also has capability of curing by exposure to moisture at room temperature showed high adhesion to PET substrate. Furthermore, to obtain higher bonding strength to PET substrate, optimal content of curing agent was researched. It was found that appropriate addition of curing agent to the UV-/moisture-curing formula contributed to a remarkable enhancement in adhesion strength, and the shear strength bonding PET substrate can reach 7 MPa in accordance with ASTM D1002. The degree of wetting and fracture surfaces of the bonded joints were analyzed by means of contact angle measurements, scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. Mechanic performance tests including lap shear strength, peel strength, adhesion, and hardness were also carried out.

High performance TiO 2 /polymer nanocomposites with enhanced thermal and excellent UV-shielding properties have been successfully prepared by means of the anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed in the poly (methyl methacrylate/butyl acrylate/methacrylic acid) [P (MMA/BA/MAA)] matrix via a miniemulsion polymerization process. Highly crystalline TiO 2 nanoparticles with 5–8 nm diameter, were synthesized by a non-aqueous process and then modified with γ-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (A174) to improve the compatibility with polymer. FTIR, TGA and dispersity tests in monomers/water verify that the A174 is chemically bonded onto the surface of TiO 2 nanoparticles. TEM, SEM and EDS analyses indicate that the TiO 2 nanoparticles are homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. TGA and DSC studies confirm that the thermal properties of the resultant nanocomposites are significantly enhanced with respect to the neat polymer. UV–vis transmission spectra results reveal that the films with TiO 2 nanoparticles has an excellent UV-shielding property, even at 1.5 wt% TiO 2 nanoparticles loading can almost block the UV light below 350 nm while still having a high visible transparency. Therefore, the resultant nanocomposite films could be used as transparent UV-shielding materials.

Novel waterborne UV-curable polyurethane containing long fluorinated side chains (WUVFPU) was prepared and the fluorinated component was incorporated by two novel fluorinated macromolecular diols (FDO) with different chain length as chain extender. FDO was synthesized via free radical polymerization of hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFBMA) using 1-thioglycerol (TG) as chain transfer agent. Extremely low dosage of FDO incorporated could change the surface property significantly. The influence of both the content and chain length of FDO on the surface energy, surface composition and morphology were investigated by contact angle measurement, XPS and AFM. Surface energy significantly decreased at extremely low concentration of FDO. The hydrophobicity was enhanced with increasing both the content and the chain length of FDO. XPS and AFM results revealed the enhancing hydrophobicity was attributed to the enrichment of F atoms and rougher surface morphology. Gel content, pencil hardness, adhesion, and optical transmittance tests were employed to investigate the coating properties of the UV-cured films. The preparation and investigation of WUVFPU might provide better understanding of the influence of fluorinated chain length on the properties of polyurethane for theory. Moreover, it might provide a facile and effective route to prepare polyurethane materials with low surface energy for engineering and industry. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a promising biodegradable and biocompatible polymer material. However, the large number of hydrogen bonds in PVA leads to a contradiction between strengthening and plasticization, which limits its widespread application. To address this challenge, the most abundant aromatic biopolymer, lignin, was adopted as a biobased reinforcing agent for PVA. The simultaneous reinforcement and toughening of PVA by lignin were achieved through the construction of interfacial coordination bonds and hydrogen bonds. The tensile strength and Young's modulus of coordination-reinforced lignin/vanillin-modified PVA (VPVA) composites reached 101 MPa and 1694 MPa, respectively. The thermal processing window of the composites increased from 25.5 °C to 100.5 °C, which provided a potential in thermal processing. Besides, dense hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds conferred good self-healing and water recovery properties onto the composites. Interestingly, the incorporation of lignin also endowed the composites with good photothermal conversion capabilities, making the composites suitable for indoor thermal management. Under simulated solar irradiation of 200 mW/cm 2 , the composites could reduce the indoor temperature rise by 8 °C. This work presents a novel approach for effectively enhancing the comprehensive performance of lignin/PVA composites by coordination bonds, and also presents a pioneering investigation for the high-value utilization of lignin.
