Gel-type polymer separator with higher thermal stability and effective overcharge protection of 4.2 V for secondary lithium-ion batteries

Wei Ni,Dan Yang,Jianli Cheng,Xiaodong Li,Qun Guan,Bin Wang

Overcharge protection by electroactive polymer composite separators is an alternative solution for the alleviation of safety concerns of rechargeable Li or Li-ion batteries. The use of gel-type electrolyte with less free organic solvent may benefit the safety performance as well as provide enhanced thermostability. Herein, a kind of gel-type polymer electrolyte separator, prepared by a facile electroactive conducting polymer solution dip-coating method, for effective overcharge protection of Li-ion batteries with enhanced thermal stability and electrochemical safety due to the introduction of heat-resistant polyfluorene end-capped with polysilsesquioxane, may be beneficial for solution of the Li-ion battery safety problem.

A novel asymmetric phthalocyanine-based hole transporting material for perovskite solar cells with an open-circuit voltage above 1.0 V

Jun-Jie Guo,Xian-Fang Meng,Jian Niu,Yun Yin,Ming-Ming Han,Xiao-Hong Ma,Guo-Sheng Song,Fei Zhang

The hole transporting materials for perovskite solar cells to increase power conversion efficiency ( PCE ) and improve the stability have been studied in recent years. In this paper, a novel asymmetric 2,9,16-triphenoxy-23-nitrophthalocyaninatocobalt (CoPcNO 2 -OPh) is synthesized, which can be employed as a promising hole transporting material in solid state perovskite solar cells. The three phenoxy groups introduced into phthalocyanine complex improved the solubility and inhibit the aggregation effectively. This material shows strong absorption and high thermal stability. The density functional theory (DFT) method of frontier molecular orbitals shows that the introduction of phenoxy and nitro can adjust the energy levels of highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) to −5.14   eV and −3.05   eV respectively, indicating that CoPcNO 2 -OPh can be used as an hole transporting material. The optimized devices achieved a high open-circuit voltage of 1.04   V with a maximum power conversion efficiency of 8.24% under AM1.5   G standard conditions. The introduction of this new HTM offers a new and effective tool towards engineering the stability for large-scale applications.

In Situ Polymerized Quasi-Solid Electrolytes Compounded with Ionic Liquid Empowering Long-Life Cycling of 4.45 V Lithium–Metal Battery

Shuo Ma,Donghui Zhang,Zhongli Tang,Wenbin Li,Yanan Zhang,Yating Zhang,Kemeng Ji,Mingming Chen

High-voltage resistant quasi-solid-state polymer electrolytes (QSPEs) are promising for enhancing the energy density of lithium–metal batteries in practice. However, side reactions occurring at the interfaces between the anodes or cathodes and QSPEs considerably reduce the lifespan of high-voltage LMBs. In this study, a copolymer of vinyl ethylene carbonate (VEC) and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) was used as the framework, with a cellulose membrane (CE) as the supporting layer. Based on density functional theory calculations, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (Pyr14TFSI), an ionic liquid, was screened because of its lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level as a modifying agent for the in situ P(VECx-EGy)/Pyrz/LiTFSI@CE QSPEs synthesis. Pyr14+, with a lithiophobic alkyl chain, forms a dense positive ion shielding layer on the protruding tips of deposited lithium, facilitating uniform and smooth lithium deposition. Pyr14TFSI assists in constructing a stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on the Li surface enriched with LiF, Li3N, and RCOOLi. The modulation of lithium deposition behavior on the anode by Pyr14TFSI ensures stable Li plating/stripping for >1500 h. A Li–Cu cell exhibits stable cycling for >200 cycles at a current density of 0.05 mA cm–2, with an average Coulombic efficiency of 92.7%. In situ polymerization ensures that P(VECx-EGy)/Pyrz/LiTFSI@CE QSPEs exhibit excellent interface compatibility with the anode and the cathode. The CR2032 button cell Li|P(VEC1-EG0.06)/Pyr0.4/LiTFSI@CE|LiCoO2 demonstrates stable cycling with a negligible capacity decay of 0.083% per cycle for >390 cycles at 25 °C and 0.2 C when using a high-voltage LiCoO2 (4.45 V) cathode. Furthermore, a 7.1 mAh pouch cell achieves stable charge–discharge cycles, confirming the pronounced stability of the as-fabricated QSPE at the interfaces of the high-voltage LiCoO2 cathode and Li anode.

Large flour aggregates containing ordered B + V starch crystals significantly improved the digestion resistance of starch in pretreated multigrain flour

Qianying Ma,Xiaolong Wang,Rudi Appels,Di Zhang,Xinyu Zhang,Liang Zou,Xinzhong Hu

The starch digestibility of flour is influenced by both physicochemical treatment and flour particle size, but the interactive effect of these two factors is still unclear. In this study, the effect of pullulanase debranching, combined with heat-moisture treatment (P-HMT), on starch digestibility of multi-grain flours (including oat, buckwheat and wheat) differing in particle size was investigated. The results showed that the larger-size flour always resulted in a higher resistant starch (RS) content either in natural or treated multi-grain flour (NMF or PHF). P-HMT doubled the RS content in NMFs and the large-size PHF yielded the highest RS content (78.43 %). In NMFs, the cell wall integrity and flour particle size were positively related to starch anti-digestibility. P-HMT caused the destruction of cell walls and starch granules, as well as the formation of rigid flour aggregates with B + V starch crystallite. The largest flour aggregates with the most ordered B + V starch were found in large-size PHF, which contributed to its highest RS yield, while the medium- and small-size PHFs with smaller aggregates were sensitive to P-HMT, resulting in the lower ordered starch but stronger interactions between starch and free lipid or monomeric proteins, eventually leading to their lower RS but higher SDS yield.

In Situ Reduction of Fe(III) (Hydr)oxides-Bound As(V) via Electron Shuttling in the Presence of Organic Matter

Zhengqi Su,Huaming Guo,Zhipeng Gao,Tiantian Ke,Xiaojun Feng,Lingzhi Zhang

Although the reduction of pentavalent arsenic (As(V)) bound to Fe(III) (hydr)oxides (As(V)-containing FeOOH) coupled with organic matter (OM) degradation has received extensive attention, little is known about in situ reduction of FeOOH mineral-bound As(V) (As(V) (s) ) via electron shuttling in the presence of As(V)-reducing bacteria (AsRB). Here, anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA), and fulvic acid (SRFA) were used to establish an agar electron shuttle system with ferrihydrite-As(V)/goethite-As(V) and AsRB, which was isolated from high-As groundwater as the candidate strain (RA-1). We found that AQDS was more efficient in shuttling electrons to reduce As(V) (s) and Fe(III) than SRHA and SRFA. High contents of quinone moieties in AQDS indicated that quinone moieties were conducive to As(V) (s) and Fe(III) reduction. The reduction kinetic rates ( K red ) of As(V) (s) were higher than those of Fe(III), indicating the occurrence of in situ As(V) (s) reduction via electron shuttling. Furthermore, K red of As(V) (s) for ferrihydrite-As(V) systems was greater than that of goethite-As(V) systems, demonstrating that As(V) bound to ferrihydrite via monodentate was more easily reduced than that bound to goethite via bidentate. The relative expression levels of As metabolic genes ( ars C, arr A, and ars B) initially increased and then decreased in the late stage of experiments. High As concentrations in suspension inhibited the transcriptional activity of As metabolic genes in the late stage, reducing the electron production efficiency of RA-1 and subsequently slowing in situ reduction of As(V) (s) . This study highlights the importance of OM electron shuttling in the reduction of As(V) (s) , offering new perspectives in As enrichment in groundwater. Plain Language Summary OM can promote microbial As(V) reduction in high As groundwater systems. As a result, we explored how FeOOH mineral-bound As(V) could be in situ reduced via electron shuttling between AsRB and different OM. Our findings showed that AQDS was more effective than other two natural organic matter (NOM, i.e., SRHA and SRFA) in reducing both As(V) (s) and Fe(III), due to its high content of quinone moieties. The results of kinetic analysis demonstrated in situ reduction of As(V) (s) , and As(V) bound to ferrihydrite was more readily reduced than As(V) bound to goethite. In addition, the transcriptional activities of three As metabolic genes initially increased but later declined due to high As concentrations, which further slowed the As(V) (s) reduction process. Overall, these findings provide new insights into organic-mediated As cycling in contaminated groundwater. Key Points High quinone contents in AQDS led to a higher reduction extent of As(V) (s) than in SRHA and SRFA The values of K red, As were greater than those of K red, Fe , demonstrating in situ reduction of As(V) (s) Changes in As metabolic genes affected the electron production efficiency of RA-1 and As(V) (s) reduction

Mogroside V reduced the excessive endoplasmic reticulum stress and mitigated the Ulcerative colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium in mice

Tan Yue-Rong,Shen Si-Yang,Li Xin-Yi,Yi Peng-Fei,Fu Ben-Dong,Peng Lu-Yuan

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an idiopathic, chronic inflammatory condition of the colon, characterized by repeated attacks, a lack of effective treatment options, and significant physical and mental health complications for patients. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a vital intracellular organelle in maintaining cellular homeostasis. Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is induced when the body is exposed to adverse external stimuli. Numerous studies have shown that ERS-induced apoptosis plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of UC. Mogroside V (MV), an active ingredient of Monk fruit, has demonstrated excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of MV on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced UC and its potential mechanisms based on ERS. The results showed that MV exerted a protective effect against DSS-induced UC in mice as reflected by reduced DAI scores, increased colon length, reduced histological scores of the colon, and levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, as well as decreased intestinal permeability. In addition, the expression of ERS pathway including BIP, PERK, eIF2α, ATF4, CHOP, as well as the apoptosis-related protein including Caspase-12, Bcl-2 and Bax, was found to be elevated in UC. However, MV treatment significantly inhibited the UC and reversed the expression of inflammation signaling pathway including ERS and ERS-induced apoptosis. Additionally, the addition of tunicamycin (Tm), an ERS activator, significantly weakened the therapeutic effect of MV on UC in mice. These findings suggest that MV may be a therapeutic agent for the treatment of DSS-induced UC by inhibiting the activation of the ERS-apoptosis pathway, and may provide a novel avenue for the treatment of UC.

Yong-Qiang Chen,Yuan Tian,Na Li,Sui-Jun Liu

Two isomorphous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {[M 2 ( μ 3 -OH)(trz)(sdba)(H 2 O)]·3H 2 O} ∞ (M = Ni for 1 , Zn for 2 , Htrz = 1,2,4-triazole, H 2 sdba = 4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoate) were obtained under the same reaction condition. Both of complexes present a three dimensional 8- c framework with whc1 topology based on M 4 -( μ 3 -OH) units. Moreover, the magnetic properties of 1 and anion sensing of 2 were investigated. The magnetic study show that the domain antiferromagnetic interactions exist in 1 . However, complex 2 can be considered as a promising chemical sensor for detecting PO 4 3¯ by means of fluorescence enhancement among various anions in aqueous solutions.

A data-driven bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst with a record-breaking ΔE = 0.57 V for ampere-hour-scale zinc-air batteries

Jia-Ning Liu,Chang-Xin Zhao,Juan Wang,Xuan-Qi Fang,Chen-Xi Bi,Bo-Quan Li,Qiang Zhang

Refreshing the record of the electrocatalytic activity for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis is the first priority of developing next-generation rechargeable zinc-air batteries. A Δ E indicator to evaluate the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity has stagnated with a record of Δ E  > 0.60 V for decades. Herein, a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst is developed to afford an ultrahigh bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of Δ E  = 0.57 V and realize high-performance rechargeable zinc-air batteries. Specifically, atomically dispersed Fe-N-C sites and NiFeCe layered double hydroxides are integrated to afford a composite FeNC@LDH electrocatalyst, following the guidance of the data-driven analysis. The FeNC@LDH electrocatalyst demonstrates a record-breaking electrocatalytic activity of Δ E  = 0.57 V, far exceeding the state-of-the-art level by ca. 60 mV. Practical ampere-hour-scale zinc-air batteries are constructed with a capacity of 6.4 Ah and cycle under 1.0 A and 1.0 Ah conditions. This work affords a record-breaking bifunctional electrocatalyst for ampere-hour-scale zinc-air batteries in future application scenarios.

Balancing the competitive adsorption of urea and OH− over V-NiCo@NC for enhancing urea electrolysis at high current density

Zhixiang Zhai,Miaojing Pan,Jia Wu,Wenjie Jiang,Huan Wen,Shibin Yin

Urea is a common component present in both biological waste and water pollutants. Using it as an electrolyte substrate to replace the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the anode to assist hydrogen production is thermodynamically favorable and economically attractive. However, at high current densities (e.g., greater than 500 mA cm −2 ), the competitive adsorption of urea and OH − significantly limits the activity of the urea oxidation reaction (UOR). To overcome this challenge, this work designed and developed a catalyst consisting of a V-doped NiCo alloy, which is enclosed in an N-doped carbon layer. According to spectral characterization and density functional theory (DFT), the synergistic interaction between the N-doped carbon layer and V enhances the electron enrichment from the bulk to the surface. Meanwhile, the highly electronegative nitrogen atoms simultaneously regulate the local charge distribution of the carbon layer. This guarantees the optimal binding strength between reactants (urea and OH − ) and active sites. Consequently, V-NiCo@NC exhibits excellent urea oxidation performance ( E 10/1000  = 1.27/1.43 V RHE ). Additionally, the introduction of the N-doped carbon layer significantly improves the long-term durability of the catalyst, it can run steadily for 100 h at 1000 mA cm −2 . This work provides an approach for designing efficient UOR catalyst materials and offers insights for optimizing catalytic performance by balancing competing adsorption.

V-type granular starches prepared by maize starches with different amylose contents: An investigation in structure, physicochemical properties and digestibility

Sixing Lai,Hexiang Xie,Hao Hu,Kefan Ouyang,Genyuan Li,Junbai Zhong,Xing Hu,Hua Xiong,Qiang Zhao

V -type granular starches (VGSs) were prepared via an ethanol-alkaline (EA) method using maize starch with different amylose contents, specifically, high amylose (HAM), normal maize starch (MS), and waxy maize starch (WS). The X-ray diffraction pattern of the native starch was completely transformed into a V -type pattern after the EA treatment, indicating a structural change in the starch granules. The VGSs prepared by HAM had highest relative crystallinity (31.8°), while the V GSs prepared by WS showed amorphous diffraction pattern. Excessive NaOH, however, would disrupt the formation of V-type structures and cause granular shape rupture. The quantity of double-helical structures, particularly those formed by amylopectin at the starch granules' periphery, significantly decreased. Conversely, single-helical structures formed by amylose increased. A notable rise in the relative crystallinity of V crystals. Four VGS samples, characterized by granular integrity, were chosen for the next investigation of physicochemical and digestive properties. VGS prepared from HAM exhibited higher granular integrity, lower cold-water swelling extent (59.0 and 161.0 cP), improved thermal stability (the value of breakdown as lower as 57.67 and 186.67 cP), and higher resistance to digestion (RS content was up to 10.38 % and 9.00 % higher than 5.86 % and 5.66 % of VGS prepared from WS and MS). The results confirmed that amylose content has a substantial impact on the microstructural and physicochemical properties of V GSs.

Speciation analysis of Sb(III) and Sb(V) by hydride generation-smartphone colorimetric system using metal organic framework as substrate

Xiaoyu Dong,Lanlan Li,Jihong Chen,Jiayuan Tang,Shu Zhang,Qian Yao,Zhirong Zou

A portable and easy-use analytical system was established for speciation analysis of inorganic antimony (Sb(III) and Sb(V)) based on hydride generation-smartphone colorimetric method. Metal organic framework (Ag-MOF) was served as substrate here. Sb(III) was transformed to stibine (SbH 3 ) during hydride generation process, SbH 3 was then transported and reacted with Ag-MOF in reaction bottle, leading to its color turn to black from light gray, the variance was then distinguished by visual and smartphone mode. A detectable limit as low as 0.01 μg/mL can be readout by smartphone mode. Besides, citric acid was used as masking reagent for speciation analysis of Sb(III) and Sb(V). Several real environmental water samples were further detected using this colorimetric system and recoveries for those samples were 90–106 %. The potential application of this method for rapid and field analysis of inorganic antimony was further demonstrated by analysis of a certified reference water sample (BWZ6657-2016B).

Sulfolane-dissolved lithium nitrate in carbonate-based composite polymer electrolyte enables dual-interface stabilization for LiCoO2 Battery at 4.6 V

Qiujun Wang,Yifei Wang,Nana Bai,Xiaomeng Jia,Zhaojin Li,Qujiang Sun,Ranran Li,Fei Yuan,Bo Wang

LiCoO 2 (LCO) stands as one of the dominant cathode materials in commercial lithium-ion batteries due to its high energy density and extended cycle life. However, irreversible structural phase transitions (O3 to H1–3) are triggered when the LCO is charged beyond 4.4 V, accompanied by lattice oxygen release and cobalt dissolution. These phenomena aggravate cathode electrolyte interfacial side reactions, ultimately resulting in progressive capacity decay and coulombic efficiency deterioration. Herein, capitalizing on the high solubility of LiNO 3 in sulfolane (SUL), a novel carbonate-based composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) was engineered to in-situ construct cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) layer enriched with Li 3 N, Li 2 O, Li 2 SO 4 , Li 2 SO 3 , and RSO 3 Li through LiNO 3 decomposition, effectively suppressing cobalt dissolution. Remarkably, capacity retention of 73.93 % was reached after 100 cycles under 4.6 V. This work highlights a synergistic SUL-LiNO 3 interfacial modulation strategy, offering a pioneering electrolyte design paradigm for 4.6 V-class LCO batteries.
