Doping Gd2LuAl5O12:Ce with a Ca2+/Si4+ pair produced a series of Gd1.97−xLuCaxAl5−xSixO12:0.03Ce (x = 0.0–1.2) garnet new phosphors, and remarkable regulation of the crystal structure and Ce3+ luminescence was achieved. Rietveld refinement and spectral analysis revealed that greater incorporation of Ca2+/Si4+ led to a higher lattice rigidity by cell contraction, a narrower bandgap, a longer average bond length/less distortion of the [CeO8] dodecahedron and decreased centroid shift/crystal field splitting of the Ce3+ 5d energy level. A blue-shifted 4f–5d1 transition, a narrower emission band, improved thermal stability of luminescence and a shorter fluorescence lifetime were observed with increasing Ca2+/Si4+ content. Applying the yellowish-green-emitting Gd0.77LuCa1.2Al3.8Si1.2O12:0.03Ce optimal phosphor (x = 1.2), together with a commercial CaAlSiN3:Eu red phosphor, in 450 nm-excited LED lighting produced a low CCT of ∼3625 K and a high CRI/R9 of ∼95.2/94.8, indicating that the phosphor has application potential in high-performance w-WLED.

A new series of red luminescent K 5 La(MoO 4 ) 4 : x Eu 3+ (KLMO: x Eu 3+ ) phosphors ( x = 0.05–1.00 mol) was successfully synthesized by a high-temperature solid phase reaction at a low reaction temperature (600 ℃). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, photoluminescence properties, thermal quenching mechanism, quantum efficiency, and lifetime decay curves of the phosphors were measured and discussed in detail. The prepared phosphors exhibited strong red-light emission (at 615 nm) upon excitation at 394 nm, attributed to the electric dipole 5 D 0 - 7 F 2 transition of Eu 3+ . The optimal doping concentration of phosphors is 0.8 mol. The quenching temperature of the KLMO:0.80Eu 3+ phosphor was found to exceed 480 K, with high activation energy ( E a ) of 0.43 eV, showing good thermal stability. Impressively, the KLMO:0.80Eu 3+ phosphor with a 0.8 mol concentration of Eu 3+ doping also has an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of up to 84.5%. The packaged white light emitting diode (w-LED) showed a good color rendering index (CRI) (89), correlated color temperature (CCT) (5117 K), and the Commission International de L′Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates (0.342, 0.345). Furthermore, the KLMO:0.80Eu 3+ phosphor was surface-functionalized with oleic acid (OA) (KLMO:0.80Eu 3+ @OA) to help better identify Level I-III fingerprint details with high resolution and contrast. The results show that the KLMO:Eu 3+ and KLMO:Eu 3+ @OA phosphors have very promising applications in the w-LEDs and latent fingerprints (LFPs).

High-entropy diboride-based (MeB2-based) ceramics are promising high-temperature structural materials because of their excellent mechanical properties, high-temperature stability, and oxidation resistance. In order to achieve low-temperature sintering of the high-entropy ceramics, a novel preparation method of high-entropy (Ti,Zr,Nb,Mo,W)B2-SiC ceramics based on reactive sintering of pre-alloyed solid-solution metals and nonmetals of Si, C, B4C was conducted in the current work. Mechanical alloying behavior of the mixed metal powders, as well as the phase composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, and oxidation behavior of the as-sintered MeB2-SiC ceramic were investigated. The XRD, SEM, and EPMA results indicated that the primary MeB2solid-solution and SiC phases could be successfully formed during reactive sintering at a relatively low temperature of 1650 °C. The as-sintered MeB2-SiC ceramics had a high relative density of 97.8% and high mechanical properties (hardness of 19.74 ± 0.8 GPa, flexure strength of 533 ± 38 MPa, and fracture toughness of 6.01 ± 0.77 MPa·m1/2). Combining the oxidation behavior and microstructure evolution of the oxidation layer, a continuous and relatively dense MeOx-SiO2oxidation layer was gradually formed and covered on the external surface, leading to decelerating oxidation behavior after an oxidation exposure time of 10 min.

A novel phospholipid-based nanovesicle (PBN) was developed to encapsulate (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major polyphenol in green tea, to mask its bitter taste and expand its application in food products. The PBN was formed using W/O emulsion-transfer methods and showed a multilayer membrane nanovesicle structure (around 200 nm) observed with TEM. The PBN possessed a high encapsulation efficiency (92.1%) for EGCG. The bitterness of EGCG was significantly reduced to 1/12 after encapsulation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated the EGCG mainly interacted with the upper chain/glycerol/head group region of the lipid bilayer in PBN. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) showed the addition of γ-cyclodextrin in PBN enhanced EGCG's adsorption with phospholipids and allowed for its good sustained release. Encapsulating EGCG in PBN inhibited its complexation with mucin, reducing bitterness and astringency. This provides a new method to improve EGCG's flavor, potentially expanding its application in the food industry.

Emulsions co-stabilized by like-charged cationic ethyl lauroyl arginate (LAE) and positively charged chitosan/sodium tripolyphosphate (CS-TPP) nanoparticles at low doses were prepared. The effects of CS-TPP nanoparticle concentration, LAE concentration, and pH on storage stability and mean droplet diameter were investigated, and the emulsion microstructure was examined by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The emulsions formed by LAE and CS-TPP were O/W emulsions, different from W/O emulsions formed by CS-TPP alone. The stability of the emulsions co-stabilized by LAE and CS-TPP was superior to that of the emulsions stabilized by LAE alone or CS-TPP nanoparticles alone. The emulsions could maintain good stability with 0.5 mM LAE and 0.08 wt% CS-TPP at pH ranging from 3.5 to 5.5. After standing and layering, the upper cream layer of CS-TPP+LAE emulsions could form stable high internal phase emulsions. For the novel emulsion, LAE dominated the formation of emulsion droplets, and adsorbed CS-TPP nanoparticles played a crucial role in the emulsion stability. The adsorbed CS-TPP nanoparticles discretely attached to oil droplets could form a strawberry-like construct, which could prevent the coalescence of emulsion droplets through electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance. This work demonstrates the capacity of low dose food-grade emulsifiers and stabilizers to form stable emulsions.

Hierarchical nanosheet-based nanotubes are very attractive because their unique structure endows them with large surface areas and exposes massive active sites for functional applications. We herein demonstrate a facile one-pot hydrothermal approach to fabricate the hierarchical nanosheet-based MS2 (M = Re, Mo, W) nanotubes by using Te nanowires as sacrificial templates. The hierarchical nanotubes show tube channels of ∼30 nm and hierarchical channel walls with a tunable thickness of up to ∼50 nm. As exemplified for application in Li-ion and Na-ion batteries, the ReS2 hierarchical nanotubes exhibit excellent specific capacities (1137 mA h g–1 for Li-ion batteries and 375 mA h g–1 for Na-ion batteries at 0.1 A g–1 after 100 cycles), good cycling stabilities, and high rate capabilities, demonstrating their promising applicability in rechargeable batteries. This work may open up new opportunities for further exploration of new types of hierarchical nanostructures for applications, e.g., in catalysis, energy chemistry, and gas adsorption and separation.

In the alkaline-surfactant-polymer flooding emulsion, oil droplets with various sizes exhibited different interfacial properties , resulting in different stabilization and destabilization behaviors. In view of this, it is expected to achieve outstanding oil-water separation efficiency by screening targeted demulsifier for oil droplets with different size ranges (0–1, 1–5 and 5–10 μm). Based on the size effect of oil droplets, a series of multibranched polyether-polyquaternium demulsifiers that integrated different charge neutralization and interfacial displacement functionalities were designed by regulating the cationicity and EO:PO ratios. As a result, the most effective polyether-polyquaternium variant for each size range of oil droplet was screened out. By employing these three selected polyether-polyquaternium variants in a sequential batch demulsification test, the maximum demulsification efficiency of 95.1% was obtained, which was much higher than that using a single polyether-polyquaternium variant (82.5%, 80.5% and 83.8%). The adsorption behaviors of polyether-polyquaternium variants on the oil/water interface were investigated by the molecular dynamics simulation. Moreover, the interfacial properties and oil droplet size variations during the demulsification process were monitored, so as explore the demulsification mechanism. This demulsification protocol based on the size effect of oil droplets with its excellent oil-water separation performance offered significant technical promise for the emulsified oil wastewater disposal.

The quest for advanced full-spectrum lighting technologies has driven the development of W-LEDs, while challenges remain in finding effective cyan emitters and ensuring outstanding thermostability. This study detailed the synthesis of the europium-doped CaO-Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -YF 3 glass-ceramics (GCs), which demonstrated efficient cyan emission when irradiated by 419 nm light, with a spectacular internal quantum efficiency of up to 83.24 %, and outstanding thermal stability of 90.2 %@100℃ compared to room temperature intensity. In practical applications, this GC was integrated with a 420 nm LED chip, (Sr, Ca)AlSiN 3 : Eu 2+ red and Y 3 Al 5 O 12 : Ce 3+ yellow phosphor in a prototype full-spectrum W-LED device. The device achieved an excellent color rendering index (94), appropriate chromaticity coordinates (0.3789, 0.3950), and a well-defined correlated color temperature (4163 K). This study not only advances the application of GCs within W-LED technology but also reveals their potential in driving energy-saving and eco-friendly lighting solutions, thus providing a path to achieve superior full-spectrum lighting technology.

Pt-Pd-Ni polyhedral nanobelt (PNBs) composite catalysts are synthesized in presence of tungsten hexacarbonyl [W(CO) 6 ] by a simple solvothermal method, combining both higher specific surface area and more index active site than the corresponding single-structure catalysts. The thermal decomposition of W(CO) 6 plays a crucial role in the morphology formation. The tenuous composite with a moderate nanobelt width of 7.46 nm formed after heating for 6 h (Pt-Pd-Ni PNBs2) shows better ORR performance and durability than the ternary (Pt-Pd-Ni) and binary (Pt-Pd) single structures. It exhibits a mass activity of 1.49 (A mg Pt −1 ), which only degrades by about 10.63 % after 50,000 durability cycles. The metal regulatory effects induced by the carbonyl compounds cause the contraction of the Pt-Pt bonds. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the compressive strain of Pt-Pd-Ni PNBs2 leads to a decrease in the d-band center and overpotential negatively shifted, thus provide a more sufficient and faster ORR proceeding process in thermodynamics, facilitating a higher energy conversion efficiency.

Bismuth oxyhalide (BiOI) has been used for photoelectrochemical catalysis in the field of catalytic hydrogen evolution, but it in a single-phase form has hardly been reported for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (PHER). Herein, we designed a W/S co-doped BiOI-based superhydrophilic catalyst with oxygen vacancy-rich defects and heterovalent valence states for efficient PHER under visible light. The W/S doping in BiOI not only adjusts the energy band structure and expands the visible light response range, but also transforms its hydrophobicity into superhydrophilicity, with which the gas bubble amount can be reduced and PHER activity enhanced. The introduction of sulfur regulates the content of oxygen vacancies which enhance the active surface sites for capturing water molecules and activating the H-O-H bond. The added tungsten exists in different valence states of W 6+ and W 5+ which is beneficial for electron hopping and PHER activity. The W/S-BiOI-3 with the suitable W/S doping content exhibits the highest visible-light PHER rate of 9.46 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 9.7 % at 420 nm. W/S-BiOI-3 shows excellent PHER activity, stability, and durability, which provides a feasible scheme for other bismuth-based halogen oxides to be used in PHER.

The stabilization of double emulsions (e.g., oil-in-water-in-oil or water-in-oil-in-water emulsions) remains a research challenge due to their simultaneous possession of two distinct oil-water interfaces. In this study, a novel oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) double emulsion was constructed utilizing a beeswax-soybean oil oleogel as the continuous phase, while a gelatin-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion served as the dispersed phase. The effects of gelatin concentration, beeswax content, and the volume fraction of the dispersed phase on the stability, microstructure, and rheological properties of the O/W/O double emulsions were investigated. The results indicated that the emulsion droplet size reduced from 10.08 ± 2.29 μm to 6.92 ± 1.82 μm by elevating the gelatin concentration. In addition, the solidification of the O/W/O double emulsion into an oil-solid-solid interface structure induced by thermal treatment and subsequent storage at room temperature, which resulted in improved stability and modulus. Following freeze-thaw cycles, the stability of the double emulsions remained unaffected by varying concentrations of beeswax (ranging from 2 to 8 wt%). Destabilization was observed only when the volume fraction of the O/W emulsion reached 55 % v/v, suggesting that double emulsions with lower internal dispersed-phase contents (e.g., 10 % v/v and 25 % v/v) exhibited superior freeze-thaw stability. These findings highlight the potential of this innovative formulation for producing interfacially stable O/W/O double emulsions with enhanced physical properties, thereby offering a promising strategy for applications that necessitate long-term stability and structural integrity.

Electrolysis of seawater driven by renewable energy holds great promise for sustainable hydrogen production. However, both catalyst corrosion caused by competitive Cl − adsorption and sluggish reaction kinetics are major challenges in seawater electrolysis. Here, inspired by the concept of hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB), a unique interfacial W-O-Co electron bridge is constructed on the catalyst surface to achieve the electronic coupling of hard-acid W site and borderline-acid Co site via the oxygen bridge, which demonstrates exceptional performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline water and seawater, as well as high anti-corrosion stability. Remarkably, WO 3 /CoP electrode requires low overpotentials of merely 154 mV (alkaline freshwater) and 189 mV (alkaline seawater) for HER, and 334 mV (alkaline freshwater) and 343 mV (alkaline seawater) for OER to achieve 100 mA cm −2 , respectively. When deployed our bifunctional catalyst as both anode and cathode in an alkaline anion-exchange membrane seawater electrolyzer, the system achieves 1 A cm −2 at a low cell voltage of 1.80 V and maintains stable electrolysis for over 250 h at 100 mA cm −2 . Theoretical and experimental investigations reveal that the hard-acid W site of the electronic W-O-Co bonded bridge prefers adsorption of hard-base OH - rather than soft-base Cl - , thereby mitigating Cl - interference and suppressing chloride corrosion. Simultaneously such interfacial W-O-Co bridging significantly accelerates charge transfer from Co site to W site, thereby regulating the electronic structures of catalysts and optimizing the sorption behaviors of reaction intermediates. This work provides a feasible anti-corrosion engineering strategy to design efficient and robust electrocatalysts for practical seawater electrolysis.
