A novel electrochemical biosensor based on WO3@AuNPs and HBP@BIBB macromolecule-triggered ATRP for DR1 detection

Xiaojing Cui,Yaping Zhang,Hanmeng Zhang,Huaixia Yang,Yanju Liu,Fuchun Si

The sensitive detection of down-regulator of transcription 1 (DR1) plays an important role in the early diagnosis and treatment of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). Herein, we report a novel electrochemical sensor based on the nanocomposite of tungsten oxide–gold nanoparticles (WO3@AuNPs) and hyperbranched polymer–2-bromo-isobutyryl bromide (HBP@BIBB) initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for the ultrasensitive assay of DR1. Monolayer WO3 nanosheets, which have high conductivity, were first compounded with AuNPs to obtain the WO3@AuNP nanocomposite. WO3@AuNPs can not only increase the conductivity of the electrode but also provide more active sites for biological molecules, thereby effectively amplifying the output signal. By introducing macroinitiator HBP@BIBB into the ATRP reaction, more electroactive molecules were introduced into the sensor, further amplifying the output signal and making the sensor ultra-sensitive. The optimized sensor demonstrated a wide linear range of 1 × 10−4 –1 × 102 ng mL−1 with a low detection limit of 2.91 fg mL−1. Moreover, the electrochemical biosensor has high selectivity, good stability, and strong anti-interference ability, and is suitable for the determination of DR1 in complex biological matrices. In conclusion, this electrochemical biosensor shows great potential in biomarker detection.

A high-performance room-temperature NH3 gas sensor based on WO3/TiO2 nanocrystals decorated with Pt NPs

Zhixuan Wu,Zhengai Chen,Zhixiang Deng,Ning Dai,Yan Sun,Meiying Ge

In this work, a high-performance room-temperature ammonia (NH3) gas sensor based on Pt-modified WO3–TiO2 nanocrystals was synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal method. The structural properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The 10 at% Pt@WO3–TiO2 nanocrystals present the highest NH3 sensing performance at room temperature. Compared with the nanocrystals without Pt modification, the sensitivity of the Pt@WO3–TiO2 sensor is tenfold higher, with the lowest concentration threshold reaching the 75 ppb level. The response is approximately 92.28 to 50 ppm, and response and recovery times are 23 s and 8 s, respectively. The improved sensing was attributed to a synergetic mechanism involving the space charge layer effect and Pt metal sensitization, enhancing the electron transfer efficiency, oxygen vacancy and specific surface area. This study is expected to guide the development of high-performance room-temperature ammonia sensors for clinical breath testing.

Photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin to produce high value-added chemicals by carbon quantum dots modified WO3 nanosheets

Zhijie Jiang,Xutang Liu,Wei Zhao,Fei Wang,Mingyu Cui,Linyang Dong,Chong Liang,Dingkai Wang,Shuiyuan Fu

Photocatalysis, a sustainable development strategy, employed to produce value-added chemicals from lignin, has attracted much attention due to its low energy consumption and mild reaction conditions. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) composite photocatalysts (CQDs/WO 3 ) were prepared by ultrasonic assisted wet impregnation method in this study. The CQDs/WO 3 nanosheets exhibit good optical properties and satisfactory performance of lignin depolymerization. Characterization results embody that the addition of CQDs significantly changes the morphology of WO 3 . Compared with bulk pure WO 3 , CQDs/WO 3 becomes a nanosheet structure in the size of ∼ 200 nm. Furthermore, CQDs can absorb photogenerated electrons as well as reduce the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. The strong oxidizing ability of n -type semiconductor WO 3 enables it to effectively break the typical bonds like C-O or C-C near polar functional groups in lignin. Due to this ingenious design, dealkaline lignin conversion was up to 34.21% as well as the highest yields of vanillin and vanillic acid in the form of lignin were 24.74 mg/g and 8.02 mg/g in 2 h at room temperature, visible light illumination and air atmosphere, respectively. And optimized CQDs/WO 3 also had satisfactory effects on three natural lignin (grass lignin, pine lignin and birch lignin), which proved its universality. Electron spin resonance experiments and mechanism investigation demonstrated that ·O 2 - and ·OH play a weighty role in photocatalytic depolymerization of lignin. This study provides a new gambit for converting lignin to high value-added chemicals (vanillin and vanillic acid) over modified WO 3 .

Porous carbon film/WO3-x nanosheets based SERS substrate combined with deep learning technique for molecule detection

Qinli Ye,Miaomiao Wu,Qian Xu,Shuwen Zeng,Tao Jiang,Wei Xiong,Songyin Fu,Muhammad Danang Birowosuto,Chenjie Gu

The Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an attractive optical detecting method with high sensitivity and detectivity, however challenges on large-area signal uniformity and complex spectra analysis methods always retards its wide application. Herein, a highly sensitive and uniform SERS detection strategy supported by porous carbon film/WO 3-x nanosheets (PorC/WO 3-x ) based noble-metal-free SERS substrate and deep learning algorithm are reported. Experimentally, the PorC/WO 3-x substrate was prepared by high-temperature annealing the PorC/WO 3 films under the argon atmosphere. The defect density of the WO 3 was controlled by tuning the reducing reaction time during the annealing process. The SERS performance was evaluated by using R6G as the Raman reporter, it showed that the SERS intensity obtained on the substrate with the optimal annealing time of 3 h was about 8 times as high as that obtained on the PorC/WO 3 substrate without annealing treatment. And detection limit of 10 -7 M and Raman enhancement factor of 10 6 could be achieved. Moreover, the above optimal SERS substrate was utilized to detect flavonoids of quercetin, 3-hydroxyflavone and flavone, and a deep learning algorithms was incorporated to identify the quercetin. It revealed that quercetin can be accurately detected within the above flavonoids, and lowest detectable concentration of 10 -5 M can be achieved.

In-situ growth WO3@ZIF-8 core-shell nanorod arrays for highly responsive and selective NO2 detection

Gen Li,Jinan Li,Ya Wang,Yuhang Du,Hongyan Xu,Yan Wang

In this research, a two-step hydrothermal method was used to fabricate a NO 2 sensor based on WO 3 @ZIF-8 core-shell nanorods grown on ceramic tubes. The material's morphology, nanostructure, and composition were thoroughly characterized. The nanocomposites consisting of WO 3 @ZIF-8 showed significant sensing response (65) toward 50 ppm NO 2 at 200 °C. The WO 3 @ZIF-8 core-shell nanomaterials demonstrated exceptional selectivity to NO 2 against TEA and possessed good repeatability. Moreover, the distinctive core-shell nanorods structure promote the process of transferring the electrical charge of the carrier and the response to the targeted gas. The outer coating of ZIF-8 microporous material, with small pore window size (0.5–0.7 nm), had a sieving effect on large molecular interference gases. Further, we combined density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the reaction mechanism of the sensors.

Spatially separated dual cocatalysts on type-II heterojunction TiO2@WO3 hollow nanospheres for photocatalytic degradation of phenol

Jianhang Yuan,Qinglan Chen,Yongqiang Wang,Shaomin Zhou,Shiyun Lou

The construction of photocatalysts with high sunlight absorption capacity and fast photogenerated carrier separation is essential for environmental remediation and solar energy conversion. However, metal oxides, such as TiO 2 , still suffer from the severe recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and the low consumption of sunlight. The type-II heterojunction hollow structure decorated with dual co-catalysts were proposed to simultaneously address the issues in charge separation and sunlight absorption. Herein, bifunctional cocatalysts, Au and MnO x , are spatially separated anchored on the inner and outer surfaces of TiO 2 @WO 3 heterogeneous hollow nanospheres. The spatially separated dual cocatalysts promoted the separation of photogenerated charge carriers by steering the photogenerated electrons and holes in opposite directions. Additionally, the surface plasmon resonance absorption of co-catalysts Au nanoparticles (450-600   nm) and light absorption of WO 3 (<450   nm), and scattering in hollow nanospheres synergistically improve the absorption of sunlight. As a result, the as-prepared TiO 2 @WO 3 hollow sphere decorated with Au and MnO x exhibits an exceptional photocatalytic degradation of phenol compared with pure TiO 2 @WO 3 hollow sphere or TiO 2 @WO 3 hollow sphere decorated with single cocatalyst Au or MnO x . This work fully demonstrates that the designed type-II heterogeneous structures with the spatially separated cocatalysts are a promising solution for enhancing photocatalysis performance.

Bingkun Liu,Ruoyu Li,Beibei Liu,Guanghui Wang,Jiayu Sun,Hongda Huang,Hengzhen Shi,Jingtao Zhang

Z-scheme WO 3 /AgI heterojunctions on carbon fiber (CF) cloth were fabricated through in-situ hydrothermal method and chemical bath deposition route. The CF@WO 3 /AgI cloth achieved highly efficient photocatalytic abilities under visible light , which could eliminate 95.7 % of Rhodamine B (RhB) in 70 min and 70.0 % of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) in 110 min, superior to those of CF, CF@WO 3 and CF@AgI cloths. Moreover, the catalyst was able to achieve 7.0 ± 0.16 log 10 CFU/mL reduction of E. coli cells within 40 min. Recycling test confirmed the repeatability and stability of CF@WO 3 /AgI cloth. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the increased visible light utilization, accelerated charge carriers separation and high photo-redox capabilities which came from the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction. This work provided inspiration for the construction of high-efficiency flexible photocatalysts for environmental decontamination .

Triphasic WO3/Periodic Acid System for Amine-Specific Complexation and Ultrafast Photocatalytic Mineralization with Exceptional Quantum Efficiency

Fei He,Shuhao Sun,Beibei Cai,Rui Tian,Myoung Won Chung,Seunghyun Weon,Wonyong Choi

Volatile aliphatic amines (VAAs) are toxic pollutants with low odor thresholds, contributing to the formation of smog, aerosols, and carcinogenic nitrosamines, but their removal is hindered by complex degradation pathways and the generation of non-volatile by-products. This study introduces a novel triphasic photocatalytic system consisting of periodic acid (PA), tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ), and an in situ surface water layer for the mineralization of VAAs under visible light. PA protonates the VAAs molecules, altering the hydroxyl radical attack pathway and subsequently forming vicinal amino-alcohol intermediates, which further react with PA via amine-specific complexation to induce rapid C─C bond cleavage. This leads to the generation of smaller aldehydes and acids, which are then rapidly mineralized into CO 2 . The PA/WO 3 system mineralizes 120 ppmv n-propylamine ( n-PrA ) with an exceptionally high apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 91.8%, compared with only 9.4% for acetaldehyde under identical conditions. This process prevents secondary pollution by dissolving the ammonium product in the in situ surface water layer. These results highlight the outstanding performance of PA/WO 3 for eliminating various VAAs from air, establishing it as a highly effective and selective method for purifying amine-contaminated air.

Surface-doped Ru over WO3 nanocubes for highly selective and ppb-concentration 1-octen-3-ol sensing

Tingting Wang,Xinhua Zhao,Zhenxu Li,Yi Zhang,Zhu Zhang,Dachi Yang

The newly-emerged gas sensing detection of 1-octen-3-ol biomarker is expected to indirectly monitor foodborne illnesses caused by Salmonella-contaminated meat, which requires high selectivity and a ppb-concentration detection limit. Here, surface-doped ruthenium over tungsten oxide nanocubes (Ru/WO 3 NCBs) have been synthesized by a wet-chemical approach for highly selective and ppb-concentration 1-octen-3-ol sensing. As-prepared Ru/WO 3 NCBs exhibit a polycrystalline structure and consist of NCBs that have an average side length of ∼131 nm, and the Ru/WO 3 NCBs show a high sensing response toward 5 ppm 1-octen-3-ol (R a /R g = 406), excellent selectivity, 50 ppb detection limit, 70% relative humidity tolerance, and 54 days stability at 220 o C. The excellent sensing performance might be attributed to the electronic and chemical sensitization of Ru, which thickens the electron depletion layer and increases adsorbed oxygen to promote interfacial electron transfer and 1-octen-3-ol oxidation. Practically, Ru/WO 3 NCBs have been integrated into a sensing device to simulate detecting 1-octen-3-ol, which has the potential for Salmonella detection in the future.

The effects of high-performance Al3+ electrolyte and driving voltage on the electrochromic properties of WO3 films

Jun Wu,Lei Zhao,Yuhua Zhang,Shengfei Sun,Lu Yao,Cuina Yang,Zhifeng Liu

Tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) films were prepared by the hydrothermal method, and their micro-properties were characterized by microscopic testing techniques. Combining an electrochemical workstation with an ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer, the effects of electrolyte type (1 mol/L AlCl 3 •6H 2 O/H 2 O and LiClO 4 /C 4 H 6 O 3 ) and driving voltage (0.4, 0.6, 0.8 V for Al 3+ electrolyte, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 V for Li + electrolyte) on their electrochromic properties were systematically investigated. The results indicated that WO 3 films exhibited a nanorod cluster morphology with a hexagonal phase crystal structure. Al 3+ electrolyte demonstrated superior electrochromic properties compared to Li +  electrolyte. At the same driving voltage of 0.8 V, the peak current density and area of the cyclic voltammetry curve for Al 3+ electrolyte were 4.19 times and 5.20 times those of Li +  electrolyte. Additionally, the charge transfer resistance was lower, the static optical modulation curve was higher, and the dynamic optical modulation and coloration efficiency were 1.88 times and 1.46 times those of Li + electrolyte. Notably, the colored time for Al 3+ electrolyte was shorter than that of Li +  electrolyte, while its bleached time was longer. Furthermore, increasing the driving voltage enhanced optical modulation but decayed cycling stability. The decay evolution model of cycling stability comprised three stages: stable decay, rapid decay, and residual decay. At lower driving voltages, only the stable decay stage occurred. With driving voltage increasing, all three stages emerged, accompanied by accelerated decay rates and shortened decay cycles. Besides, the driving voltage threshold for Al 3+ electrolyte was lower than that for Li +  electrolyte, while its optical modulation and cycling stability were superior. The decay mechanism of cycling stability could be attributed to four factors: ion trapping, lattice distortion, electrostatic attraction, and interfacial reaction. This study can provide theoretical references for the development and application of high-performance electrochromic smart windows.

Highly responsive WO3/SnS2 sensor with humidity compensation: NO2 real-time detection system in soil surface layer

Huizhang Zhao,Jianhui Lv,Xiao Ma,Bin Huang,Lei Han,Xingyu Kang,Dong Wang,Hairui Fang

NO 2 concentration in soil surface is one of the important indicators affecting soil nitrogen cycle. Real-time detection of NO 2 is crucial to optimize the use of nitrogen fertilizer and improve efficiency, which is also a key means to prevent soil acidification and increase crop yield. However, the humidity conditions on the soil surface increase the challenge of real-time detection of NO 2 . Therefore, a composite material of tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) composite tin sulfide (SnS 2 ) with heterogeneous structure was synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. The composite material is seen to exist in the form of nanosheets. At the optimal working temperature of 210℃, the response of the composite material (WO 3 /SnS 2 (3:10)) with a molar ratio of WO 3 to SnS 2 of 3:10–20 ppm NO 2 is 63.8. The excellent gas sensing performance is attributed to the composition of heterojunction and the increase of deficiency oxygen. In the relative humidity (RH) range of 20–98 %, the response of the WO 3 /SnS 2 (3:10) has a good linearity ( R 2 =0.995). Therefore, the humidity compensation is integrated into the convenient NO 2 detection equipment to ensure that the WO 3 /SnS 2 (3:10) sensor can detect NO 2 stably and accurately under different humidity conditions. The NO 2 real-time detection system uses the OLED to display the humidity value and NO 2 concentration value in real time on the soil surface, and the buzzer as an alarm device for exceeding the concentration threshold (2 ppm NO 2 ), which reminds staff of the need to take action to adjust crop management strategies to improve crop health.

Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants using Ce/Fe/Ag tri-doped WO3/SiO2/SnO2 composite films

Yanyan Wang,Guobao Li,Youxin Hao,Yuhan Xie,Xintian Li,Changlong Chen,Anning Jiang

In recent years, the rapid economic development has significantly altered industrial production and human lifestyle, resulting in the exacerbation of water pollution. Consequently, photocatalytic technology has received considerable attention as an environmentally friendly and efficient approach for wastewater treatment. In this paper, WO 3 /SiO 2 /SnO 2 composite films were prepared by sol-gel method and subsequently co-doped with Ce, Fe and Ag ions. The photocatalytic performances of these modified composite films toward degradation of methyl green (MG) and tetracycline (TC) were systematically evaluated under UV and visible light irradiation. Comprehensive characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Nitrogen adsorption desorption isotherm test, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–vis DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectrascopy, were employed to investigate the crystalline phase, morphology, particle size, chemical composition, specific surface area and optical properties of the prepared composite films. The PL spectral analysis revealed that the co-doping of Ce, Fe and Ag significantly enhanced the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carrier in the WO 3 /SiO 2 /SnO 2 composite films. Radical trapping experiments demonstrated that superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ) and hydoxyl radicals (·OH) played predominant roles in the photocatalytic degradation process. Notably, the prepared photocatalyst maintained stable performance through five consecutive recycling tests, demonstrating excellent reusability. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the WO 3 /SiO 2 /SnO 2 -Ce/Fe/Ag composite films can be attributed to the impactful suppression of electron-hole recombination through the strategic incorporation of dopant ions.
