Transition metal sulfides have been widely used as anode electrodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and low price. However, problems of huge volume expansion and poor conductivity during charging and discharging have been emerged. Herein, we design a N, C-co-doped, nano-sized, and hollow carbon-coated ZnS (ZnS-NC@C) composite using the advantages of metal organic framework (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8) structure and resorcinol-formaldehyde coating. When applied as anodes of LIBs and SIBs, it displays a high reversible capacity of 748 and 150.9 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at the current density of 1.0 A g−1, respectively. This work could provide a promising strategy for enhancing the performance of transition metal sulfides for potential applications in LIBs and SIBs.

A highly sensitive and accurate dual-signal strategy is developed for trace Cu2+detection based on the inner filter effect (IFE) between Tween 20-gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs). Tween 20-AuNPs are utilized as colorimetric probes and excellent fluorescent absorbers. The fluorescence of CdSe/ZnS QDs can be quenched efficiently by Tween 20-AuNPs via IFE. In the presence of D-penicillamine, D-penicillamine induces the aggregation of Tween 20-AuNPs and the fluorescent recovery of CdSe/ZnS QDs at high ionic strength. Upon addition of Cu2+, D-penicillamine tends to selectively chelate with Cu2+and then forms the mixed-valence complexes, which consequently inhibits the aggregation of Tween 20-AuNPs and the fluorescent recovery. The dual-signal method is used to quantitatively detect trace Cu2+, with low detection limits of 0.57 μg/L and 0.36 μg/L for colorimetry and fluorescence, respectively. In addition, the proposed method using a portable spectrometer is applied to the detection of Cu2+in water. This sensitive, accurate and miniature sensing system has potential in environmental evaluations.Keywords:fluorescence;colorimetry;copper;CdSe/ZnS quantum dots;gold nanoparticles;inner filter effect

The construction of a tightly contacted heterojunction consisting of multi-components is proven to be one of the effective strategies to promote the photogenerated charges separation and to develop high-efficient photocatalysts in hydrogen evolution . Herein, a ternary hollow heterostructure of ZnS/ZIS/In 2 S 3 has been fabricated by using a binary MOF@MOF (ZIF-8@MIL-68(In)) as the precursor, and an in-situ sulfurization of ZIF-8@MIL-68(In) is controlled to optimize the photocatalytic performances. The resulting samples are signed as Z@M- t , where the t is pointed to the sulfurization time being varied from 4 h to 48 h. It’s shown that the hierarchical and hollow architecture is formed for Z@M- t , and with the reinforced light harvest ability in both UV and visible light regions. In the subsequent visible-light-induced photocatalytic hydrogen generation, the optimized Z@M-24 manifests significantly improved hydrogen evolution rate of 607.34 μmol g -1 h −1 , which values are evidently higher than that by the single MOF and binary ZIF-8@MIL-68(In) heterostructure. The electrochemical analyses and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum were analyzed to clarify the charge transfer routes and the enhanced photocatalytic mechanism, in which the contribution of each metal sulfide is also discussed. Finally, the good photocatalytic stability and reusability of Z@M-24 heterostructure are also represented, which define the structure superior brought by the effective heterojunction based on the in-situ sulfurization strategy of binary ZIF-8@MIL-68(In), and determine their prospect applications in the efficient H 2 production under visible light irradiation.

InP quantum dots (QDs) have attracted much attention owing to their nontoxic properties and shown great potential in optoelectronic applications. Due to the surface defects and lattice mismatch, the interfacial structure of InP/ZnS QDs plays a significant role in their performance. Herein, the formation of In–S and S x –In–P 1− x interlayers through anion exchange at the shell-growth stage is revealed. More importantly, it is proposed that the composition of interface is dependent on the synergistic effect of halogen ions and shelling temperature. High shelling temperature contributes to the optical performance improvement resulting from the formation of interlayers, besides the thicker ZnS shell. Moreover, the effect relates to the halogen ions where I − presents more obvious enhancement than Br − and Cl − , owing to their different ability to coordinate with In dangling bonds, which are inclined to form In–S and S x –In–P 1− x bonds. Further, the anion exchange under I − -rich environment causes a blue-shift of emission wavelength with shelling temperature increasing, unobserved in a Cl − - or Br − -rich environment. It contributes to the preparation of highly efficient blue emissive InP/ZnS QDs with emission wavelength of 473 nm, photoluminescence quantum yield of ≈50% and full width at half maximum of 47 nm.

In this work, we proposed a facile strategy to prepare molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) modified Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) as optosensing materials via sol-gel polymerization for specific recognition of celastrol (Cel) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Firstly, L-Cysteine (L-Cys) modified Mn-doped ZnS QDs (L-Cys@Mn-ZnS) was used as imprinting substrate. The amino and carboxyl groups on the surface of Mn-ZnS QDs can provide more binding sites for imprinting polymerization. Then, the fluorescent MIPs was synthesized in the presence of L-Cys@Mn-ZnS QDs, template celastrol, 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) and ammonium hydroxide in the ethanol-water (9/1, v/v) solution. The morphology and structure of the products were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The resulting MIPs functionalized Mn-doped ZnS QDs (denoted as MIPs@L-Cys@Mn-ZnS QDs) had higher imprinting factor of 14.19 and significant selectivity. The MIPs@L-Cys@Mn-ZnS QDs as fluorescent probe exhibited sensitive response to Cel in the linear range from 0.1 μM to 3.5 μM and the limit of detection was estimated to be 35.2 nM. The probe was also applied for the detection of Cel in traditional Chinese medicine with recovery ranged from 88.0%–105.0%. The results confirmed that MIPs@L-Cys@Mn-ZnS QDs could efficiently and specifically capture Cel from actual complex traditional Chinese medicine samples.

Benefiting from their ultra-small diameters and highly structural anisotropies, ultrathin semiconductor nanowires (USNWs) are well-known for their fascinating physical/chemical properties, as well as their promising applications in various fields. However, until now, it remains a challenge to synthesize high-quality USNWs with well-controlled diameters and lengths, let alone the exploration of their size-dependent properties and applications. To solve such a challenge, we report herein a ligand-induced low-temperature precursor thermolysis route for the controlled preparation of ultrathin ZnS nanowires, which is based on the oriented assembly of the in-situ formed ZnS clusters/tiny particles. Optimized synthetic conditions allowed the synthesis of ZnS nanowires with a diameter down to 1.0 nm and a length approaching 330 nm. The as-prepared ultrathin ZnS nanowires were then intensively examined by morphological, spectroscopic and electrochemical analytical means to explore their size-dependent optical absorption properties, photocatalytic activities and band-edge energy levels, as well as their underlying growth mechanism. Notably, these USNWs, especially for the thinnest nanowires, were identified to possess an excellent performance in both the selective absorption of ultraviolet (UV) light and photocatalytic degradation of dyes, thus enabling them to serve as longpass ultraviolet filters and high-efficiency photocatalysts, respectively. For the ultrathin ZnS nanowires with a diameter of 1.0 nm, it was also interesting to observe that their exciton absorption peak positions were kept almost unchanged during the continuous extension of their lengths, which has not been reported previously. Keywords:ultrathin semiconductor nanowires;size-controlled synthesis;size-dependent optoelectronic properties

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have attracted a great amount of attention for their appealing optoelectronic properties. In this work, the CuInS 2 (CIS)/ZnS core/shell QDs based on 4.3 nm cores with various layers of ZnS shell (0 to 10) were synthesized. With the sequential growth of a ZnS shell over a CIS core, the band alignment of core/shell QDs converts from a type I to quasi-type II structure. This conversion prolongs the carrier lifetime and affects the electron transfer rate ( K et ) and electron transfer efficiency ( η ET ). A comparative study indicates that the photovoltaic performance of CIS based QDSCs can be markedly improved by optimizing the layers of ZnS shell. The highest photo conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.07% is obtained at optimum ZnS thickness of about 1.55 nm. These results show tuning the thickness of shell to change the band alignment is an effective strategy to manipulate the carriers transportation behaviors and thus affect the PCE of CIS-based optoelectronic devices.

A selective phosphorescent on-off-on probe with long decay lifetime has been designed for the detection of pyrophosphate ions (PPi). The detection scheme is based on the use of europium(III)-modulated Mn(II)-doped ZnS quantum dots capped with N-acetyl-L-cysteine. Both the aggregation of quantum dots and electron transfer induced by Eu(III) ions cause phosphorescence to be quenched (“off” state). Phosphorescence is, however, restored on addition of PPi to the system (“on” state). The effect is attributed to the removal of Eu(III) from the carboxy groups on the surface of the quantum dots owing to the stronger interaction between PPi and Eu(III). A linear relationship exists between phosphorescence intensity (best measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 316/594 nm) and PPi concentration in the 400 nM to 6000 nM with a detection limit of 145 nM. An additional attractive feature is provided by the long-lived phosphorescence (1920 μs) of the quantum dots. It can be used to eliminate interference by short-lived fluorescence in biological samples by performing time resolved measurements. The probe was applied to the determination of PPi in spiked in urine samples and gave recoveries in the range from 98 to 105% with RSDs of <2.0%.

Highly luminescent, good stable and low toxic N-acetyl- l -cysteine (NAC) capped CdTe/CdS@ZnS–SiO 2 near-infrared (NIR)-emitting quantum dots (QDs) were successfully fabricated in aqueous solution via a microwave irradiation reduction route, in which thiol-capped CdTe/CdS QDs were employed as core templates and ZnCl 2 , NAC and tetraethyl orthosilicate as shell precursors. This presented ZnS-like clusters filled hybrid SiO 2 model not only greatly improved the brightness and stability of original CdTe/CdS QDs, but also tremendously decreased the cytotoxicity towards HeLa cells. Furthermore, it was found that Hg 2+ could effectively selective quench the QD NIR emission based on electron transfer process. On the basis of this fact, a simple, rapid and specific method for trace Hg 2+ determination was proposed. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity decreased linearly with the concentration of Hg 2+ ranging from 5.0 × 10 −9 to 1.0 × 10 −6 M and the limit of detection for Hg 2+ was 1.0 × 10 −9 M ( S / N = 3). As practical applications, the novel NIR sensor has been demonstrated to monitor and image Hg 2+ level in milk power and HeLa cells respectively with satisfactory results obtained.

The II–VI group/monoamine hybrid was a novel inorganic/organic (I/O) layered structure and it exhibited a strong quantum confinement effect and well-defined Mn2+-doped luminescence, which was imperative and valuable academically for its application. In this work, the pure and well-crystalline (ZnS:Mn)2·oa (oa = octylamine) hybrid was prepared by solvothermal synthesis and its thin films were fabricated by the drop-casting method. The 5 at% Mn2+-doped hybrid exhibited a strong Mn2+ luminescence at 597 nm with a 300 nm excitation. The inner filter effect (IFE) for this luminescence was investigated and verified by detecting three selected environmental contaminant species: n-butyl xanthate (BX), crystal violet (CV), and reaction black 5 (RB5), which indicated that this hybrid thin film had a good luminescence IFE-based linear response for the μM species solution. Furthermore, the 597 nm luminescence remained intact for the solution with a pH from 4 to 10 and the hydrophobicity of the hybrid thin film was favorable for its rapid and multiple IFE-based detection. Therefore, this hybrid thin film is a competitive candidate for the new-generational fluorescence sensors to probe the occurrence of these environmental contaminants.

High-quality Cd x Zn 1 – x Se and Cd x Zn 1 – x Se/ZnS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) emitting in the violet–green spectral range have been successfully prepared using hydrothermal methods. The obtained aqueous Cd x Zn 1 – x Se and Cd x Zn 1 – x Se/ZnS QDs exhibit a tunable photoluminescence (PL) emission (from 433.5 nm to 501.2 nm) and a favorable narrow photoluminescence bandwidth [full width at half maximum (FWHM): 30–42 nm]. After coating with a ZnS shell, the quantum yield increases from 40.2% to 48.1%. These Cd x Zn 1 – x Se and Cd x Zn 1 – x Se/ZnS QDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. To further understand the alloying mechanism, the growth kinetics of Cd x Zn 1 – x Se were investigated through measuring the fluorescence spectra and X-ray diffraction spectra at different growth intervals. The results demonstrate that the inverted ZnSe/CdSe core/shell structure is formed initially after the injection of Cd 2 + . With further heating, the core/shell structured ZnSe/CdSe is transformed into alloyed Cd x Zn 1 – x Se QDs with the diffusion of Cd 2 + into ZnSe matrices. With increasing the reaction temperature from 100 °C to 180 °C, the duration time of the alloying process decreases from 210 min to 20 min. In addition, the cytotoxicity of Cd x Zn 1 – x Se and Cd x Zn 1 – x Se/ZnS QDs were investigated. The results indicate that the as-prepared Cd x Zn 1 – x Se/ZnS QDs have low cytotoxicity, which makes them a promising probe for cell imaging. Finally, the as-prepared Cd x Zn 1 – x Se/ZnS QDs were utilized to ultrasensitively and selectively detect Hg 2 + ions with a low detection limit (1.8 nM).

Background With the rapid development of industrialization, the excessive emission of S 2− have become increasingly serious, leading to a surge in the content of S 2− in nature. Rapid and accurate detection of S 2− contamination in natural adaptogens is crucial for food safety. Annually, discarded eggshell waste, rich in organic and inorganic materials, poses environmental risks if landfilled. Utilizing waste eggshell membrane biomass for S 2− detection is cost-effective, yet designing biochar materials for sensors requires balancing catalytic enhancement and anti-interference capabilities. Improving the catalytic performance of biochar for colorimetric S 2− detection without metal ion interference presents a challenging issue. Results We first modified biochar (EBc) derived from waste eggshell membranes using a combination of thiourea and ZnS nanoparticles, fabricating ZnS-decorated, S–N co-doped biochar (ZnS-SN-EBc) nanozymes, which were applied for the colorimetric assay detection of S 2− contamination. The addition of thiourea significantly increases the proportion of pyridinic-N in biochar, enhancing the peroxidase-like activity of the nanozyme. The growth of ZnS nanoparticles on the biochar not only enhances the catalytic performance by increasing the S content but also reduces the content of oxidized S, thereby improving resistance to interference. The detection range for S 2− was expanded from 0.1 to 45 μM for EBc to 0.05–225 μM for ZnS-SN-EBc, and the limit of detection improved to 0.0397 μM. Additionally, ZnS-SN-EBc significantly enhanced metal ion interference resistance. S 2− detection in five types of adaptogenic herbs verified the accuracy and practicality of the colorimetric assay, with recovery rates comparable to national standards. Significance We innovatively repurposed waste eggshell membranes to develop a selective and catalytic peroxidase-like nanozyme, ZnS-decorated S–N co-doped biochar (ZnS-SN-EBc). The developed colorimetric assay utilizing ZnS-SN-EBc demonstrates significant potential for the detection of sulfur ions in adaptogenic herbs, thus contributing to both waste resource utilization and the advancement of food safety detection technologies.
