Zr-Zn bimetallic organic frameworks functionalized PTFE composite membranes with effective removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions

Tong Xu,Xiaopei Ding,Chengcai Li,Haoyang Cheng,Guojin Liu,Hailin Zhu,Yuhai Guo,Xueliang Jiang,Jiuming Li

Accelerated industrial expansion has led to significant wastewater pollution, with effluent containing the toxic heavy metal Cr(VI) posing severe threats to ecosystems and human health. The combination of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and membrane separation techniques offers promising solutions for pollutant removal. This study developed a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-based composite membrane for effective Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solutions. This membrane was prepared through the in-situ synthesis of zinc-zirconium bimetallic MOFs on a PTFE membrane that had been modified with L-DOPA/PEI. The composite membrane demonstrated optimal Cr(VI) adsorption at a Zr:Zn molar ratio of 1:4, under conditions of 45 °C and pH = 2, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 335.1 mg/g. The adsorption process of Cr(VI) onto the composite membrane adhered to both the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic analyses confirmed a spontaneous, endothermic process. The composite membrane, with its excellent adsorption capacity, filtration performance, and recyclability, stands out as a highly effective material for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. Furthermore, it addresses the issues of aggregation, difficulty in separation, and the recycling challenges associated with powder-like MOFs, demonstrating significant potential for practical applications.

Site-engineered Zr-based metal-organic frameworks for ultrahigh-performance one-step separation of methanol-to-olefins products

Jianfei Xiao,Jifei Ma,Zhenliang Zhu,Yao-Qi Huang,Shaojun Yuan

The separation of methanol-to-olefins (MTO) products to obtain high-purity ethylene (C₂H₄) and propylene (C₃H₆) is a critical yet challenging task. However, developing adsorbents with high C₃H₆/C₂H₄ selectivity and productivity for one-step C₂H₄ purification and C₃H₆ recovery remains an industrially significant but demanding objective. In this study, a site-engineering strategy was employed to tailor cage size and polarity within a confined pore space. Using post-synthetic modification, the robust Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF-808) was functionalized with oxygen- and benzene ring-containing ligands, including benzoic acid (Ben), 2-formylbenzoate (For), and 2-acetylbenzoic acid (Ace). Among these, MOF-808-For exhibited a twofold increase in both C₃H₆ adsorption capacity (5.7 mmol·g⁻¹) and C₃H₆/C₂H₄ separation efficiency compared to unmodified MOF-808 under identical conditions. Additionally, MOF-808-For enabled the simultaneous recovery of C₃H₆ and C₂H₄ through a one-step adsorption-desorption process. Adsorption thermodynamics and theoretical calculations revealed that C₃H₆ interacted more strongly with the framework than C₂H₄. The optimal cage size and oxygen-binding sites of MOF-808-For facilitated the selective trapping of C₃H₆ via multiple strong C-H···C and C-H···O hydrogen bonds, resulting in exceptional C₃H₆/C₂H₄ selectivity (11.1) and high C₂H₄ productivity (99.1 L·kg⁻¹ at 2 mL·min⁻¹ for 1:1 C₃H₆/C₂H₄ mixture) among reported MOFs. Furthermore, multi-cycle experiments demonstrated no significant loss in separation performance, confirming the excellent reusability of MOF-808-For for MTO product separation.

DLP 3D printed super-tough Zr⁴⁺-DES-PAAc hydrogel for high-performance flexible electronics and self-powered sensing

Mengyao Chen,Wenjing Qin,Yanli Wang,Yu Song,Fei Tian,Hanlin Zhai,Changshun Gu,Le Ge,Song Xue,Xinxin Li,Xiangchuan Zhao,Yixin Xu,Zeyu Ming,Shengrong Li,Shougen Yin

3D printing hydrogel shows a broad application prospect in soft actuator/robot and flexible electronics due to its adaptable structure and designable chemical composition. Herein, a Zr 4 + -deep eutectic solvent (DES)-PAAc hydrogel is developed via digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology. By synergistically integrating hydrogen bonding, Zr⁴⁺-carboxylate ionic coordination bonds, and electrostatic interactions between DES and PAAc chains, the hydrogel achieves a unique soft-hard phase-separated dual-network architecture. This design provides an internal energy dissipation-storage mechanism, endowing the hydrogel with exceptional mechanical robustness (maximum stress of 1.86 MPa), high conductivity (conductivity of 0.51 S/m), and cyclic compression stability (energy dissipation of 2.69 kJ m⁻³), thereby overcoming the trade-off between toughness and functionality in conventional hydrogels. Leveraging DLP 3D printing, the hydrogel is precisely tailored into complex architectures (e.g., bioelectrodes, impact-resistant structures). Remarkably, the hydrogel serves as a self-powered pressure-sensing electrolyte in Zn-Cu batteries and a weather-resistant bioelectrode for real-time monitoring of bio-signals. Furthermore, its tailored structures exhibit programmable impact resistance for delicate device protection. The combination of additive manufacturing and cross-domain functionality establishes a paradigm for hydrogels in wearable healthcare, soft robotics, and energy-autonomous sensing systems.

Dual-mode sensing of Staphylococcus aureus in food via fluorescent Apt@Fe/Zr MOF with peroxidase-like activity

Yang Juanli,Chen Xingnu,Ji Yi,Tan Mengyuan,Hu Qin,Gao Lu,Zheng Kaiyi,Yang Zhen-quan,Li Xin,Xu Xuechao

Staphylococcus aureus , a prevalent foodborne pathogenic bacterium, poses a significant threat to human health. Herein, a dual-mode sensing method is proposed for detecting S. aureus in food using aptamer-modified Fe/Zr metal organic framework (Apt@Fe/Zr MOF). The Apt@Fe/Zr MOF was prepared through self-assembly of Fe/Zr MOF followed by surface modification with an aptamer. It exhibits peroxidase-like activity, catalyzing the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) chromogenic reaction. Meanwhile, Apt@Fe/Zr MOF demonstrates fluorescent characteristics, emitting a fluorescence signal at 428 nm upon excitation with light at 350 nm. Based on this feature, dual-mode sensing of S. aureus with comparable specificity and excellent anti-interference was achieved through the integration of colorimetry and fluorometry. The limits of detection (LOD) for both colorimetric and fluorometric analyses were 3.25 × 10 1 and 1.47 × 10 1  CFU mL −1 , respectively. Actual detection of food samples indicates that this method exhibits excellent reliability and accuracy, with recoveries ranging from 91.12 to 107.55% (colorimetry) and 94.40 to 109.47% (fluorometry). The results are highly consistent with those obtained from traditional culture-based methods. Therefore, it is evident that the dual-mode detection of S. aureus using Apt@Fe/Zr MOF offers a rapid and reliable method for ensuring food safety. Graphical

Potential-resolved real-time ultrasensitive sensing of bisphenol compounds based on ionic liquid coupled Zr-MOF@GO nanosensor

Zarfashan Shahid,Bairong Fu,Saima Rehman,Zia Ahmad,Jiping Chen,Xianbo Lu

Bisphenol compounds, including BPA and BPS, are significant pollutants found in the environment, food, and daily necessities. They pose various adverse effects, including estrogenic, immunotoxic, metabolic, and reproductive toxicity, which severely threaten human health and ecological safety. Achieving simultaneous rapid detection of BPA and BPS is still very challenging due to their similar structures and co-existence in actual samples at ultratrace level. This study addresses the problem of developing an effective method for the rapid detection of BPA and BPS simultaneously. A new electrochemical nanosensor based on ionic liquid (IL) coupled Zr-MOF@GO was developed for ultrasensitive real-time detection of BPA and BPS. The Zr-MOF@GO/IL nanocomposite features a custom-built structure with an ordered framework, abundant pores, and highly coupled interfaces. The experimental findings demonstrate that the introduction of IL enhances the conductivity and dispersibility of the nanocomposite, improves the absorption capability for target bisphenols, and significantly improves the detection limit and linear range of the Zr-MOF@GO based electrochemical sensor. The sensor demonstrated wide linear ranges with detection limits of 5.5 nmol/L for BPA and 7.1 nmol/L for BPS (S/N = 3), respectively. Comparative studies revealed that the detection limits of the Zr-MOF@GO/IL-based sensor improved by an order of magnitude compared to the Zr-MOF@GO-based sensor. Additionally, the sensor exhibited superior analytical performance regarding reproducibility, stability, and selectivity. This study investigated the capability and synergy of IL coupled high-valent stable transition metal Zr IV -based MOFs in electrochemical sensing for the first time. This development sets a new benchmark in non-enzymatic electrochemical sensing, establishing the Zr-MOF@GO/IL-based sensor as a promising platform for the individual or simultaneous rapid detection of bisphenols in actual samples.

Rapid one-pot synthesis of multifunctional UiO-66(Zr/Ce)-NH2 for detection and photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline

Chaoting Shi,Ninghan Tang,Shan Pu,Hui Xin,Lan Wu,Xiandeng Hou

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have been widely used for the antibiotic pollution control. However, it remains a challenge to simple design and synthesis of multifunctional MOFs for sensing and degradation antibiotics. Herein, a multifunctional UiO-66(Zr/Ce)-NH 2 ratiometric fluorescence sensing and photocatalytic degradation platform was rapidly and simply constructed at room temperature by a one-pot method using a dielectric barrier discharge device. The mixed-metal centers and mixed-ligands of this platform enabled effective ratiometric fluorescence sensing of tetracycline (TC), along with a visual fluorescence shift from blue to yellow-green color. The platform demonstrated a detection of TC ranged from 200 nM to 15 μM, with a detection limit of 43 nM. Moreover, the UiO-66(Zr/Ce)-NH 2 exhibited strong light absorption and efficient photogenerated carrier separation, thus offering excellent degradation performance of TC compared with that of MOFs with single metal center, mixed ligands or mixed metal centers. The mechanism of fluorescence detection and potential charge transfer pathways by the UiO-66(Zr/Ce)-NH 2 were analyzed. This work provided a new approach for the simple design and synthesis of multifunctional MOFs platforms.

Effective sequestration of phosphate by ultrasmall hydrated Zr(IV) oxide nanoparticles confined inside the PEI-crosslinked chitosan beads

Rui Ma,Xinjie Cui,Youyi Liu,Qianhui Xu,Weiwei Wang,Guangze Nie

Nanocomposites fabricated through the encapsulation of hydrated Zr(IV) oxide (HZO) nanoparticles within millimeter-scale hosts have emerged as promising candidates for phosphate sequestration from water. However, achieving ultrasmall nanoparticles within these hosts that maintain high decontamination reactivity is still a significant challenge. Herein, a novel nanocomposite (denoted HZO@CS-PEI) was obtained by confining the growth of HZO in dual crosslinked network hydrogels composed of interpenetrating chitosan (CS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI). Benefiting from the confinement effect of the dual cross-linked structure, the HZO within HZO@CS-PEI exhibited an ultrasmall size of approximately 2.16 nm. The incorporation of PEI enhanced both phosphate sequestration efficiency and mechanical stability of the nanocomposite, improving its practical applicability. Ultrafine dispersion of HZO nanoparticles within the composite matrix achieved a saturable phosphate adsorption capacity exceeding 64.41 mg/g at 298 K. Crucially, selective phosphate adsorption by HZO@CS-PEI remained effective in water containing high concentrations of coexisting anions and organic matter. The synergistic application of spectroscopic analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed three distinct interaction mechanisms between HZO@CS-PEI and phosphate: inner-sphere complexation, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, the used HZO@CS-PEI could be effectively regenerated with 0.1 mol/L NaOH for repeat use. In the column adsorption tests, phosphate-contaminated water was successfully treated by HZO@CS-PEI columns over 2750 bed volumes (BV), confirming operational stability under dynamic flow conditions.

Engineering the Unoccupied Electronic Levels in Nanoscale Zr-MOFs by Intrinsic Open-Metal-Site Modulation for Enhanced Luminescence

Jing Chen,Jiawen Li,Huanhuan Wang,Xincun Dou,Baiyi Zu

How to modulate the open metal sites (OMS) for enhancing the luminescence emerges as a significant issue to explore in the exploration of high-performance metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for photoluminescence (PL) sensing and X-ray detection. Here, by efficiently extending the conjugation of the ligand, nanoscale Zr-ADIP, which has eight OMS per Zr cluster, was first synthesized and demonstrated to have enhanced PL and X-ray excited luminescence (XEL) performance. Furthermore, a modulator tuning strategy was adopted to occupy the OMS, which has been proven to be efficient for engineering the unoccupied electronic levels, promoting the relaxation of the excited electrons, and enhancing the PL efficiency. It is found that with benzoic acid as the modulator, the optimal nanoscale Zr-ADIP-BzOH exhibits superior performance with an X-ray detection limit of 0.53 μGy s–1, which is 10 times lower than the minimum X-ray dose rate requirement for medical X-ray imaging. The superior XEL performance of Zr-ADIP-BzOH has been further proven to be effective in the tentative monitoring of the morphology of a mature pearl in a clam sample by constructing a condensed film device. We expect that the proposed OMS introduction and modulator tuning strategy would offer insights for the structural design and performance enhancement of luminescent MOFs.

The effect of Mo interlayer on CeO2/Y2O3 reinforced AlCrFeNiCu high-entropy alloy coatings on Zr-4 substrate

Xiaona Ren,Zhipei Chen,Peng Wang,Wenchang Wang,Yao Wang,Changchun Ge

Rare earth oxide (CeO₂/Y₂O₃) reinforced AlCrFeNiCu high-entropy alloy coatings with a Mo interlayer (designated as Mo/CeO₂-AlCrFeNiCu and Mo/Y₂O₃-AlCrFeNiCu) were successfully deposited onto a Zr-4 substrate via high-speed laser cladding. The microstructural characteristics and properties of the composite coatings were comprehensively investigated. The results demonstrate that the Mo interlayer alleviates the thermal mismatch between the substrate and the HEA coatings and, to a certain degree, counteracts the grain refinement effect induced by the rare earth oxides. Overall, it plays a critical role in enhancing interfacial structural stability, mitigating thermal stress, and improving overall coating performance. It effectively optimizes the coating-substrate bonding integrity, reduces susceptibility to high-temperature fretting fatigue and plastic deformation, and significantly lowers the specific wear rate. Furthermore, the Mo interlayer enhances the compactness and continuity of the interface, suppresses the formation of corrosive pathways, and promotes the formation of a thicker, more stable passive film on the coating surface.

Acetic acid-assisted synthesis of Zr-based metal organic framework for rapid and efficient low-concentration ammonia adsorption

Jia-Hui Chen,Hao-Yu Jiang,Wen-Qiang Gong,Wei Hui,Xiao-Liang Zhang,Ming-Shuai Sun,Jia-Yin Zhang,Dan-Dan Cai,Duan-Jian Tao

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been acclaimed as potential adsorbents for gas separation, yet their intrinsic microporosity and site-saturated coordination often lead to slow adsorption kinetics and poor selectivity under low-concentration gas conditions. To address this challenge, we developed an acetic acid-assisted synthesis strategy to engineer Zr-based MOFs (UiO-66-V, V = acetic acid volume) with enhanced Lewis acids sites and porous structure. The optimal UiO-66-2.5 variant achieves an adsorption rate six times higher than that of pristine UiO-66 and superior ideal adsorption solution theory selectivities for 3 % NH 3 /97 % N 2 (745) and 3 % NH 3 /97 % H 2 (6036) at 298.2 K and 1.0 bar. Dynamic breakthrough experiments confirm the excellent regenerative stability and separation performance of UiO-66-2.5, achieving a retention time of 120 min g −1 for a simulated industrial gas mixture (3 % NH 3 /24.25 % N 2 /72.75 % H 2 ), outperforming pristine UiO-66 (84 min g −1 ). Furthermore, the optimized 90 % UiO-66-2.5@PVA pellets exhibit a breakthrough time of 100 min·g −1 , which is comparable to that of the UiO-66-2.5 powder. Moreover, UiO-66-2.5 could maintain 92 % capacity over 10 adsorption-regeneration cycles. Comprehensive characterization studies revealed that the enhanced NH 3 uptake and separation performance originate from the higher surface areas and increased Lewis acids sites in UiO-66-2.5 compared to the pristine material. This work establishes acid-assisted synthesis as an effective strategy for designing MOFs that meet the capacity, kinetics, and stability requirements for industrial NH 3 capture.

Influence of catalyst surface properties on product selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation over Cu–Ce–Zr oxide solid solutions

Zhenhui Huang,Xiangying Wang,Wei Na,Xinyu Ling,Xingpeng Sun,Runqin Chen,Wengui Gao,Hua Wang

The surface properties of catalysts play a crucial role in CO 2 hydrogenation. In this study, Cu-loaded Ce–Zr oxide (CCZ) catalysts with distinct activities were synthesized via four methods. Catalytic testing revealed that the CCZ-HM catalyst exhibited the highest performance, achieving the greatest methanol space–time yield (STY). Structural and surface analyses revealed that low-valence Cu specie, oxygen vacancies, strong metal–support interactions, and balanced acid–base properties contributed to enhanced catalytic performance of the CCZ catalysts. Mechanistic studies indicated that CCZ-CP and CCZ-HM catalysts exhibited higher oxygen vacancy concentrations and enhanced surface acidity-basicity, which promoted CO₂ adsorption and the formation of carbonate species. In a CO 2 + H 2 atmosphere, both catalysts mainly formed bidentate formate species, which served as key intermediates in methanol synthesis. However, the strong adsorption capacity and limited H 2 spillover of the CCZ-CP catalyst hindered further hydrogenation of these intermediates, thereby reducing methanol production. In contrast, the excellent acid–base synergy and efficient H₂ spillover of CCZ-HM promoted the hydrogenation of CO₂-derived intermediates to methanol, resulting in enhanced STY. These findings indicate that the rational control of catalyst surface acidity, oxygen vacancy concentration, and H 2 activation ability is crucial for improving overall catalyst performance.

Zr-MOF modified cotton fiber for pipette tip solid-phase extraction of four phenoxy herbicides in complex samples

Ying Su,Sicen Wang,Nan Zhang,Ping Cui,Yan Gao,Tao Bao

Phenoxy herbicides are widely applied in agricultural weeding. The determination of herbicides is important in environmental protection, agricultural production, food safety, and public health. In this study, a facile and efficient analytical method was proposed for the trace detection of phenoxy herbicides in soil, cucumber, and tap water samples by coupling pipette tip solid phase extraction (PT-SPE) with high performance liquid chromatography . UiO-66-funtionalized cotton ( [email protected] ) was packed into pipette-tip as sorbent to fabricate extraction device. The modification of UiO-66 on cotton fiber was confirmed using scanning electron microscope , Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , and X-ray diffraction. The main factors affecting the adsorption of [email protected] for four phenoxy herbicides were evaluated by response surface methodology in detail. Under optimized conditions, [email protected] displayed excellent properties in the extraction of phenoxy herbicides with good peak shape. Linear ranges of 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, dicamba, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, and 2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) propionic acid were 1.4–72 μg/L, 5.6–280 μg/L, 2.8–140 μg/L and 3.2–160 μg/L (RSDs < 6.3%), respectively. The recoveries were between 83.3 and 106.8% with RSDs <6.7%, with detection limits ranging from 0.1 μg/L to 0.3 μg/L. The results show that [email protected] in PT-SPE is an effective method for monitoring phenoxy herbicides in complex samples.
