Recyclable magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2/β-NaYF4:Yb3+,Tm3+/TiO2 composites with NIR enhanced photocatalytic activity

Zhangxu Chen,Ming-Lai Fu

To extend the activities of TiO 2 to the near infrared (NIR) region and to separate and recycle photocatalysts easily is vital for the high harvest of solar energy for sustainable society. The magnetic NIR activated Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 /β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ /TiO 2 (FS/UC/T) composites have been synthesized by using the solvothermal method by adding Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 and Degussa P25 into the mixed solution of NaOH, ethanol, oleic acid, Re(NO 3 ) 3 and NH 4 F. Moreover, the obtained composites were explored for photocatalytic applications. It was found that FS/UC/T emit UV–vis light under irradiation of 980 nm laser and efficient energy transfer from β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Tm 3+ to TiO 2 was verified. The photodegradation experiments for treating methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO) and colorless phenol were carried out to evaluate the photocatalytic activities of the samples. The photodegradation rates reach 76.62%, 68.48%, 30.05% and 27.16% for MB, RhB, MO and phenol under irradiation of 980 nm laser, respectively, which suggested magnetic FS/UC/T composite is an advanced NIR-driven photocatalyst. Moreover, the magnetic photocatalyst showed easy separation and good stability in the recycled tests. It suggested a promising system to utilize the NIR energy for photocatalysis based on TiO 2 and to utilize the magnetic for separation of photocatalysts, which will contribute to practical environmental remediation in the future.

A Blue/NIR ratiometric fluorescent probe for intracellular detection of Tyrosinase and the inhibitor screening

Qi Dai,Zichun Qi,Zhenzhen Yan,Biao Yu,Jingqiu Li,Baosheng Ge,Hua He,Fang Huang,Xiaojuan Wang

A novel ratiometric fluorescent tyrosinase assay is developed based on hybrid nano-assembly of gold nanocluster and tyrosine-containing peptides. The AuNCs@YCY nano-probe ( AYNP ) is fabricated through the hydrophobic interactions and π-π stacking between the tyrosine residues of the Tyr-Cys-Tyr tripeptide (YCY) and the ligands on the surfaces of AuNCs under the near-isoelectric pH value. The resulted AYNP shows distinct fluorescence responses, spontaneous turn-on of the blue emission and turn-off of the near-infrared emission, with a single wavelength excitation. It is demonstrated that the enhancement and quenching are due to the production of pheomelanin and dopaquinone structures, respectively, induced by tyrosinase oxidation. The internal referencing system provides the tyrosinase assay with superior sensitivity and a detection limit as low as 6.3 U L −1 could be achieved. The experimental results also demonstrate the excellent selectivity, good photo-stability, and both in vitro and cellular applications of AYNP . This assay technique is low-cost, easy to prepare, and shows excellent potential as a novel melanoma clinical diagnostic platform and a tyrosinase inhibitor screening tool.

Ni2+-activated MgTi2O5 with broadband emission beyond 1200 nm for NIR-II light source applications

Chuan-Jun Tang,Bo-Mei Liu,Lin Huang,Jing Wang,Qiang Tang

The rapid development of minimized near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted LEDs (pc-LEDs) has evoked a large demand for broadband NIR phosphors and will enable breakthrough NIR spectroscopy applications. Consequently, the search for NIR pc-LEDs which can emit in the NIR-II window (1000–1700 nm) has become increasingly urgent. Herein, an unprecedented long-wavelength NIR MgTi2O5:Ni2+ phosphor that exhibits broadband NIR emission covering 1200 to 1700 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 245 nm is successfully synthesized. By combining the MgTi2O5:Ni2+ phosphor with an ultraviolet LED chip, a high-performance NIR pc-LED is fabricated, which has a NIR output power of 3.6 mW at 300 mA driving current. These results indicate that the fabricated NIR-II pc-LED device is a promising candidate as a broadband light source for NIR spectroscopy applications including night vision, high-penetrating imaging, and information restoration. For instance, the secret information covered by ink can be recovered with the aid of an NIR-II pc-LED. This work not only provides a new material that has great potential as a NIR light source, but also demonstrates a set of approaches to expand the application of NIR spectroscopy and imaging technology.

Kai-fei Wang,Yi-ping Mu,Shu Wang,Yin-xue Song,Jing Xu,Xiao-hui Li,Rui-tao Wang

Pancreatic cancer is the most malignant tumor in the digestive system. Its strong invasiveness and difficulty of surgical removal result in a high mortality rate. We developed an erythrocyte membrane-camouflaged metal-organic framework ( [email protected] ) loaded with indocyanine green (ICG) for photothermal therapy of pancreatic cancer. ICG can be released in acidic tumor environments due to its pH responsiveness. More importantly, integrating erythrocyte membrane surface modification, immune escape, and prolonged blood circulation characteristics significantly improved the tumor-targeting ability of [email protected] The in vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that the prepared [email protected] exhibited a significant therapeutic effect on pancreatic cancer.

A HAase/NIR responsive surface on titanium implants for treating bacterial infection and improving osseointegration

Dan Li,Danyang Wang,Ye He,Bailong Tao,Xiaoxia Liu,Yulu Yang,Lu Tan,Yuchen Zhang,Jingwei Hu,Weihu Yang,Yu Tang,Kaiyong Cai

Bacterial infection and insufficient osseointegration are critical factors affecting the long-term success of titanium-based implants. Unfortunately, the direct application of antibiotic on Ti implants easily leads to poor cytocompatibility, as well as the production of drug-resistant bacteria. So, in this work, we designed a prospective antibacterial strategy by combining photothermal and ciprofloxacin (CIP). The synergistic effect of photothermal and antibiotic may provide an effective bacteriostatic efficacy without sacrificing osteogenesis at a mild condition of moderate temperature and less antibiotic. Herein, CIP was loaded into mesoporous polydopamine (MPDA) nanoparticles ( [email protected] ), which were anchored on the surface of titanium and finally covered with sodium hyaluronate-catechol (HAc) coating. The hydrophilic HAc layer could inhibit the early adhesion of bacteria, and some bacteria could secrete bacterial hyaluronidase to accelerate the degradation of HAc. This enabled smart enzyme-triggered release of antimicrobials at the site of infection on-demand and avoided unwanted side effects on normal tissues. In addition, NIR light irradiation had a positive influence on both CIP release and MPDA nanoparticle's photothermal effect. Moreover, before anchoring [email protected] , by the construction of hydroxyapatite microstructure on Ti surface with micro-arc oxidation and alkali heat treatment, the ability of bone formation of Ti could be promoted also. Both in vitro as well as in vivo assays demonstrated that functional Ti has an excellent antibacterial effect and osteogenic ability.

Red–NIR Luminescence in Rare-Earth and Manganese Ions Codoped Cs4CdBi2Cl12 Vacancy-Ordered Quadruple Perovskites

Peipei Dang,Guodong Zhang,Wei Yang,Hongzhou Lian,Guogang Li,Jun Lin

Combining rare-earth ions (RE3+) in halide perovskites is a hopeful strategy to produce interesting optical properties in visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions. Here, RE3+ (RE: Nd, Ho, Er, Tm) ions are successfully introduced into Cs4Cd1–wMnwBi2Cl12 (0 ≤ w ≤ 1) vacancy-ordered quadruple perovskites through a facile hydrothermal method. In addition to the strong orange-red Mn2+ emission, the as-prepared materials exhibit the effective characteristic emission of RE3+ in the red and NIR regions via constructing a Mn2+ energy bridge. With Mn2+ gradually replacing Cd2+ in Cs4Cd1–wMnwBi2Cl12:RE3+, the photoluminescence (PL) of RE3+ in the red and NIR ranges shows an increasing trend until it reaches the strongest value (w = 1). The energy transfer processes of [BiCl6]3– → Mn2+ → RE3+ are confirmed, and the corresponding mechanism is explored. According to the manipulation of the Mn2+/Cd2+ component, an evolution process from direct to indirect band gaps is verified via a combined experimental–theoretical approach. White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are fabricated by employing Ho3+-doped Cs4MnBi2Cl12 on near-ultraviolet (n-UV) LED chips, achieving an improved color rendering index (CRI) from 83.3 to 93.0 compared to that of the parent compound. Codoping RE3+ (RE: Nd, Ho, Er, Tm) ions into Cs4MnBi2Cl12 results in an ultrawide emission covering both NIR I and NIR II regions, implying a great potential for NIR detection application.

NIR responsive nitric oxide nanogenerator for enhanced biofilm eradication and inflammation immunotherapy against periodontal diseases

Manlin Qi,Xuan Ren,Wen Li,Yue Sun,Xiaolin Sun,Chunyan Li,Siyao Yu,Lin Xu,Yanmin Zhou,Shuyan Song,Biao Dong,Lin Wang

Periodontal disease is one of the most common oral infectious diseases and closely related to many systemic diseases which is in urgent need of novel and effective drugs. In particular, the problems of deep lesion location and synchronization of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory needs to be addressed. Herein, near infrared (NIR) light triggered nanoplatform with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory dual-functions by antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), photothermal therapy (PTT) and gas therapy was realized by loading S-nitrosothiols (SNO) and ICG into mesoporous silica-coated gold nanorods . Using a single 808 nm NIR light, the excellent antibacterial efficacy can be achieved not only by aPDT-induced bacteria killing but also by PTT-triggered biofilm dispersal. Furthermore, SNO molecules would also be thermally activated to release nitric oxide (NO) gas molecules at the site of periodontal disease, exerting inflammation inhibition by suppressing the assembly of pro-inflammatory factors and NLRP3 inflammasome. Additionally, such nanoplatform could validly combat pathogenic bacterial biofilm, and modulate the inflammatory immunity, leading to favorable therapeutics on animal models with periodontal diseases. Hence, this design provides an effective solution to solve the problems of deep tissue treatment along with simultaneously antibacterial/anti-inflammatory capabilities, which provides a bright prospect for clinical treatment of periodontal diseases, even extended to other refractory infections in deep sites.

A bioactivated in vivo assembly nanotechnology fabricated NIR probe for small pancreatic tumor intraoperative imaging

Ren Han,Zeng Xiang-Zhong,Zhao Xiao-Xiao,Hou Da-yong,Yao Haodong,Yaseen Muhammad,Zhao Lina,Xu Wan-hai,Wang Hao,Li Li-Li

Real-time imaging of the tumour boundary is important during surgery to ensure that sufficient tumour tissue has been removed. However, the current fluorescence probes for bioimaging suffer from poor tumour specificity and narrow application of the imaging window used. Here, we report a bioactivated in vivo assembly (BIVA) nanotechnology, demonstrating a general optical probe with enhanced tumour accumulation and prolonged imaging window. The BIVA probe exhibits active targeting and assembly induced retention effect, which improves selectivity to tumours. The surface specific nanofiber assembly on the tumour surface increases the accumulation of probe at the boundary of the tumor. The blood circulation time of the BIVA probe is prolonged by 110 min compared to idocyanine green. The assembly induced metabolic stability broaden the difference between the tumor and background, obtaining a delayed imaging window between 8–96 h with better signal-to-background contrast (>9 folds). The fabricated BIVA probe permits precise imaging of small sized (<2 mm) orthotopic pancreatic tumors in vivo. The high specificity and sensitivity of the BIVA probe may further benefit the intraoperative imaging in a clinical setting.

Lateral organic-inorganic hybrid Vis-NIR photodetectors based on GaN nanowires promoting photogenerated carriers transfer

Tao Han,Zexin Wu,Zhilong Deng,Xiaofeng Zhang,Sidi Yang,Cuicui Chen,Jiajia Zhu,Shufang Ding,Chunzhi Jiang

The narrow bandgap of the low-energy near-infrared (NIR) polymer would lead to overlap between adjacent energy levels, which is a major barrier to the preparation of Vis-NIR polymer bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photodetectors with small responsivity and photocurrent. In this study, a high-performance lateral inorganic-organic hybrid photodetector was constructed to eliminate this barrier by combining GaN nanowires (GaN-NWs) with PDPP3T:PC 61 BM-based BHJ. In stage one, high-quality GaN-NWs were synthesized by the catalyst-free CVD method. The mechanism for controlling GaN-NWs morphology by adjusting the NH 3 flow rate was revealed. In stage two, the GaN-NWs with large electron mobility were used to accelerate the transfer of photogenerated carriers in the BHJ layer. Finally, compared with the BHJ device, the BHJ/GaN device demonstrated obvious improvements in responsivity and photocurrent at the wavelength between 400 and 1000 nm. The responsivity and photocurrent increased over 20-fold at the NIR band of 800–900 nm. Besides, owing to the energy level gradient effect, the BHJ/GaN device has a response speed of 7.8/<5.0 ms, which increases over three orders of magnitude than that of the GaN-NWs-based device ( tr / tf : 7.1/10.9 s). Therefore, the novel device structure proposed in this work holds great potential for preparing high-performance Vis-NIR photodetectors.

Mitochondrial targeted melanin@mSiO2 yolk-shell nanostructures for NIR-Ⅱ-driven photo-thermal-dynamic/immunotherapy

Yu Zhang,Qi Wang,Yishun Ji,Liyuan Fan,Binbin Ding,Jun Lin,Lili Wang

The challenge of photothermal therapy (PTT) clinical transformation is the limited penetration depth of laser light and the general concern of using synthetic photothermal nanomaterials. Hence, it is of great significance to develop combined cancer therapies based on NIR-II photothermal agents from natural materials. Herein, natural melanin nanoparticles from cuttlefish ink coated with large pore mesoporous SiO 2 were developed to load azodiisobutylimidazoline hydrochloride ( [email protected] ). After modification with (3-carboxypropyl) triphenylphosphonium bromide (CTPP), [email protected] nanoparticles showed enhanced retention in the tumor site and were further delivered to thermally susceptible mitochondria. Under 1064 nm laser irradiation, hyperthermia produced by melanin not only directly leads to cell death but also promotes AIPH release to generate oxygen-independent alkyl free radicals, which could further attack tumor cells. The collaboration of the photothermal effect of melanin and thermodynamic therapy of AIPH could induce a local antitumor immune response and effectively reprogram tumor-associated macrophages from the M2 to M1 phenotype. In combination with anti-PD-1 immune checkpoint blockade, the paralyzed immune system was awakened to inhibit and eliminate secondary metastatic tumors. The NIR-II-driven treatment in this paper can achieve energy conversion processes from NIR-II light to thermal energy and then to chemical energy to perform photothermal-dynamic therapy and immunotherapy. This will overcome the high side effects and insufficient antitumor immune response of PTT and provide a strategy for effective and mild antitumor therapy with clinically approved laser power and safe nanotechnology.

NIR-II-Responsive CeO2–x@HA Nanotheranostics for Photoacoustic Imaging-Guided Sonodynamic-Enhanced Synergistic Phototherapy

Jinling Li,Hui-Ling Peng,Changchun Wen,Peijing Xu,Xing-Can Shen,Cunji Gao

The therapeutic effect of photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) is severely limited because of the shallow tissue penetration depth of the first near-infrared (NIR-I) light. Multifunctional nanotheranostics irradiated by the second near-infrared (NIR-II) light have received wide interest with respect to deeper tissue penetration, and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) synergistic phototherapy can achieve the complete elimination of tumors. Herein, we successfully constructed a single NIR-II light-induced nanotheranostic using cerium oxide (CeO2–x) with abundant oxygen vacancies for photoacoustic imaging-guided SDT-enhanced phototherapy for the first time. CeO2–x with surface crystalline disorder showed extensive NIR-II region absorption and an outstanding photothermal conversion ability. In addition, the CeO2–x layer with numerous oxygen defects can promote the separation of holes and electrons by ultrasound irradiation, which can remarkably enhance the efficacy of phototherapy to achieve high-efficiency tumor ablation. CeO2–x was surface modified with hyaluronic acid (HA) to prepare CeO2–x@HA to allow active tumor targeting efficiency. Both cell and animal experiments confirmed that all-in-one CeO2–x@HA exhibited a high therapeutic efficacy of SDT-enhanced PDT/PTT under 1064 nm laser irradiation, which achieved complete tumor eradication without systemic toxicity. This study significantly broadened the application of NIR-II-responsive CeO2–x for photoacoustic imaging-mediated SDT-enhanced phototherapy to the highly efficient and precise elimination of tumors.

Photoluminescence Enhancement of NIR-II Emissive Ag2S Quantum Dots via Chloride-Mediated Growth and Passivation

Liang-Jun Pan,Jia-Wei Tu,Ling-Ling Yang,Zhi-Quan Tian,Zhi-Ling Zhang

Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs) with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) window are urgently pursued. Halide atoms (especially chloride) have been studied as inorganic capping ligands on improving the PLQY of Cd-, Pb-based chalcogenide QDs; however, it remains a challenge to well replace the organic ligand with chloride ligand from silver chalcogenide QDs. Herein, a novel strategy to prepare Ag 2 S QDs with significant photoluminescence (PL) enhancement via chloride-mediated growth and passivation is demonstrated. The oleylamine and oleate ligands on the surface of silver-rich Ag 2 S QDs are readily replaced by chloride ligands due to the smaller size and higher binding affinity with Ag + . Upon partial ligand exchange and chloride passivation, the surface trap states in Ag 2 S QDs are reduced through a decrease of unsaturated surface Ag atoms. Therefore, Ag 2 S QDs with approximately 300-fold enhancement of PL intensity, and a PLQY of 47.6% at 1220 nm emission, and a lifetime of 256 ns are obtained because the nonradiative recombination is inhibited. This work reveals that the passivation of Ag 2 S QDs with chloride ligands is fully feasible, providing new insights into improving the PLQY of silver chalcogenide QDs.
