Yeast protein-derived γ-glutamyl peptides prepared by transpeptidation reaction exhibit a pronounced taste-enhancing effect

Jiaying Liu,Yu Fu,Liang Ma,Hongjie Dai,Hongxia Wang,Hai Chen,Hankun Zhu,Yong Yu,Xin Liu,Zhengfang Liu,Yuhao Zhang

A high-salt diet can induce hypertension, so salt reduction can prevent hypertension. γ-Glutamyl peptides (GGPs) have obvious taste-enhancing effects, while their contents in natural foods are relatively low. Yeast protein rich in Glu/Gln is a good precursor for the preparation of GGPs. In this study, yeast protein-derived GGPs were prepared through hydrolysis and transpeptidation reactions, followed by sensory evaluation and E-tongue analysis. Peptide sequences were identified by LC−MS/MS and screened for molecular docking. The optimal reaction conditions were hydrolysis for 4 h, enzyme concentration of 16 U/g, and transpeptidation for 4 h. GGPs could increase salt and umami intensity by 60.78% and 40.93% based on sensory evaluation, 22.52%, and 16.40% according to E-tongue analysis. Fifteen γ-glutamyl peptides with different peptide lengths were selected for molecular docking. Molecular docking confirmed their binding to calcium-sensing receptors (CaSr) through hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interaction, while interaction between CaSR receptor and γ-glutamyl di-, tri-, and oligo-peptides varied in binding energy. The stimulation received by CaSR lasted a longer time and varied in intensity. It was further proved that the flavor of mixed peptides has a layered sense and can give people a rich taste experience. Overall, yeast protein-derived GGPs can enhance salt and umami taste, which can reduce salt usage without compromising taste.

Surface organic phosphates enhance mild oxidation of toluene by O2 to benzaldehyde over VTiOx/γ-Al2O3

Changshun Deng,Xiaorong Zhu,Jun Yao,Yibo Wang,Chenyang Shen,Bingqing Ge,Chaoxiang Li,Nianhua Xue,Luming Peng,Xuefeng Guo,Yan Zhu,Yafei Li,Weiping Ding

The direct oxidation of toluene by O 2 to benzaldehyde with high efficiency is a bright route for the green production of benzaldehyde but still a significant challenge. In this study, we develop a ligand modification strategy by bonding organophosphonic acid (OPA) to VTiO x /γ-Al 2 O 3 to restructure its interface microenvironment for enhancement of toluene oxidation to benzaldehyde. The as-prepared catalyst exhibits excellent selectivity over 99 % under mild conditions. Results of comprehensive characterizations and calculations reveal that the OPA bonding in bidentate with the V 6-coordinated species causes noticeable phase reconstruction between VO x and TiO 2 , thereby generating nearby new reactive oxygen species, which is responsible for the conversion of toluene to benzaldehyde at temperatures as low as ∼50 °C, much lower than that over VO x /TiO 2 (>130°C). The interface microdomain around the bonding site of OPA helps to significantly weaken the methyl C H bond of toluene molecule in reaction manifested as the significant decrease in apparent activation energy. Hence, the current work reveals a novel mechanism of the typical catalyst VO x /TiO 2 under OPA bonding, which is useful to solve the classic difficult reaction of toluene to benzaldehyde by O 2 oxidation.

Utilizing Synergistic Effect in Pd-Doped Mesoporous γ-Al2O3/SnO2 for Multiple Freon Refrigerant Gases Detection

Jiahong Wen,Yaxin Wang,Ruoning Chu,Jinhai Li,Ze Chen,Yongjun Zhang,Xiaoyu Zhao,Qi-Qi Fu

Freon refrigerants, whose leakage will cause serious safety and environmental issues, have an urgent need of developing leakage detection technologies. Conventional metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors exhibit limited efficacy in detecting halogenated Freons due to their chemical inertness and weak charge-transfer interactions. While recent innovations employing mesoporous γ-Al 2 O 3 overlayers have enabled Freon detection via catalytic decomposition sensing mechanism, the achieved sensing performance remains suboptimal. In this work, this issue is addressed by engineering a Pd-doped mesoporous γ-Al 2 O 3 /SnO 2 (Pd-γ-Al 2 O 3 /SnO 2 ) gas sensor. The doped Pd atoms not only accelerate the decomposition of Freon molecules on the catalytic layer but also induce the Schottky-barrier effect in the SnO 2 sensing layer. Benefiting from the synergistic effect, the Pd-γ-Al 2 O 3 /SnO 2 gas sensor shows outstanding response, good stability, repeatability, selectivity, and rarely-reported universality in sensing different Freon gases. Notably, a valuable solution is demonstrated in the leakage detection of next-generation refrigerants, Freon R1234yf. The sensing mechanism is deduced by exhaust gas components identification. These results highlight the promising potential for addressing the real-world needs of Freon refrigerant leakage detection technology.

Surface hydroxyl-mediated modulation of γ-Al2O3 to enhance Ni-catalyzed CO2 methanation at low temperatures

Ziyang Xu,Liang Chen,Chunbo Wang

Reaching high activity over Ni-based catalysts for CO 2 methanation at lower temperature remains a critical challenge. Herein, a surface hydroxylation strategy was developed to enhance the catalytic performance of Ni catalysts under mild conditions. By treating γ-Al 2 O 3 with H 2 O 2 solutions of varying concentrations, the surface hydroxyl (–OH) group density was effectively tuned. Catalytic evaluations revealed that hydroxylation of the support significantly enhances CO 2 methanation performance. Among the series, Ni/A-OH-6 exhibited the highest activity, achieving a turnover frequency (TOF) of 2.129 h −1 at 240 °C, approximately eight times higher than that of the unmodified Ni/A catalyst (0.266 h −1 ), thereby demonstrating a remarkable enhancement in intrinsic activity. Comprehensive characterizations demonstrated that surface –OH significantly enhanced CO 2 adsorption via the formation of HCO 3 * species. In situ DRIFTS studies further confirmed that hydroxyl-induced HCO 3 * species convert more readily to HCOO*, facilitating the hydrogenation pathway and thus contributing to the improved low-temperature activity. This work highlights surface hydroxyl engineering as a simple yet effective approach to boost catalytic efficiency, delivering guidance for the rational development of high-efficiency CO 2 utilization catalysts.

Melt-blown polypropylene with long chain branching characteristics was prepared by γ-radiation and melt blending

Bo Tian,Yuanjie Sun,Na Zhou,Zhigang Li,Jinfeng Li,Nan Zhang,Hongtao Zhao

Under the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for melt-blown polypropylene (PP), a crucial material in the manufacture of protective equipment, has seen a significant surge. During the melt-blowing process, PP melts exhibit a sharp decline in viscosity and exhibit poor thermal aging properties. In this study, melt-blown PP composites were prepared through radiation and melt blending techniques. By adjusting the proportions of the constituents, an investigation was conducted into the melt flow rate, FTIR spectra, rheological behavior, crystallization characteristics, surface morphology, surface charge, dielectric properties, and aging properties of these composites. The melt flow rate analysis revealed that the irradiated composites meet the melt-blowing standard of 1500 cm 3 /10 min. Infrared analysis shows that the chemical crosslinking network is formed by oxidative degradation-grafting reaction in melt-blown PP modification. Rheological studies demonstrated that flake graphite - lignin (GNP-LS) interactions promote heterogeneous network formation in composites. Four models-phase angle versus complex modulus, complex viscosity versus complex modulus, Han's plot, and Cole-Cole plot-provided evidence that the melt structure of PP undergoes a ‘liquid-to-solid’ transition. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results indicated that flake graphite exhibits heterogeneous nucleation effects. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope(TEM) analysis showed that the interaction between flake graphite and lignin enhances the compatibility of the blend system. Zeta potential and dielectric properties tests show that the electrochemical environmental adaptability of melt-blown PP can be controlled by the gradient addition of lignin and flake graphite. Additionally, a large number of hindered phenol structures in GNP and LS enhance aging resistance. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) indicated that GNP increased PP's heat resistance. Oxidation induction analysis further demonstrated that the oxidation induction time can reach 99.29 min upon the addition of flake graphite.

Study on the structure and γ-ray shielding performance of polypropylene/PbO composites with heterogeneous networks

Bo Tian,Jie Zhao,Na Zhou,Jinfeng Li,Jizhuang Fan,Yunchen Du,Hongtao Zhao

Polymer-based radiation shielding materials are receiving more and more interests due to their desirable advantages in lightweight and maneuverability. Herein, we employ polypropylene (PP) as the matrix to construct γ -ray shielding composites through the embedment of PbO particles with a wet reaction melt blending method. From the changes in dynamic rheological behaviors and fracture surface of PP/PbO composite, it can be found that the gradient addition of PbO particles facilitates the formation of heterogeneous network structure with, and high PbO content may make the composites undergo a “liquid–solid” transition. Rheological temperature and time scanning show that both PbO content and heterogeneous network structure greatly contribute to the storage modulus ( G ') and thermal stability. The γ -ray ( 137 Cs) shielding tests manifest that BPP/PbO-4 has the best shielding performance, whose thicknesses of half value layer ( HVL ) and tenth value layer ( TVL ) are 0.32 and 1.05 cm, respectively, obviously smaller than those shielding materials ever reported. The analyses on effective atomic number ( Z eff ) and effective electron density ( N E ) reveal that the good shielding performance of BPP/PbO-4 benefits from its proper content and dispersion of PbO particles.

Selective Hydrogenolysis of Tetrahydrofurfuryl Alcohol to 1,5-Pentanediol over MgAl2O4-Modified Pt/WO3/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst

Weiying Wang,Changlin Chen

Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, a cost-effective biomass derivative, offers a sustainable path for synthesizing 1,5-pentanediol through hydrogenolysis. To develop the efficient production of 1,5-pentanediol from this alcohol, we have prepared a series of MgAl2O4-modified Pt/WOx/γ-Al2O3catalysts with varying compositions via impregnation–calcination methods. The physicochemical properties of these catalysts were subsequently characterized using diverse techniques. Characterization revealed that magnesia–alumina spinel modification enhanced Pt particle dispersion, CO adsorption on Pt/WOx/γ-Al2O3, reduced Pt particle reduction temperature, diminished the acid content in the catalysts, and increased the surface oxygen vacancy concentration. These alterations appear to influence the catalyst performance, though other factors cannot be ruled out. Catalytic activity tests demonstrated that magnesia–alumina spinel modification improved tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol hydrogenolysis activity and the 1,5-pentanediol selectivity of Pt/WOx/γ-Al2O3. Optimal performance was achieved at 12% magnesia–alumina spinel loading, with a tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol conversion of 47.3% and 1,5-pentanediol selectivity of 88.4%.

Efficient separation of lignocellulose component and furfural production from hemicellulose using a γ-valerolactone/H2O system

Xinyu Wang,Mingyang Hu,Yun Liu

This study investigates a one-step process for the simultaneous separation of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin from lignocellulosic biomass using γ-valerolactone (GVL)/H 2 O pretreatment, which also converts hemicellulose to furfural (FF). A response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the process parameters. Under optimal conditions (163 °C for 1.5 h), the maximum FF yield reached 85.36 %, and cellulose purity was 80.80 %. The extracted GVL-lignin was characterized as low-molecular-weight guaiacyl-syringyl (G-S) type nanospheres with significant antioxidant activity. The conversion of hemicellulose to FF was enhanced by the synergistic interaction of Lewis acid (MgCl 2 ) and Brønsted acid (H 2 SO 4 ), which promoted the isomerization of xylose and dehydration to FF. The high-purity cellulose yielded 18.87 g/L ethanol through separate hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF), 27 times higher than untreated solids. Additionally, GVL exhibited consistent performance in lignocellulose separation after six cycles. This method offers an efficient and sustainable approach to valorize lignocellulosic biomass, advancing the production of high-value products.

Investigating the role of poly-γ-glutamic acid in Pennisetum giganteum phytoextraction of mercury-contaminated soil

Kun Zhou,Deliang Yin,Chen Liu,Rongguo Sun

Farmland mercury (Hg) pollution poses a significant threat to human health, but there is a lack of highly efficient phytoextraction for its remediation at present. This study investigates the impact of poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) on the phytoextraction capabilities of Pennisetum giganteum ( P. giganteum ) in Hg-contaminated soil. Our research indicates that amending γ-PGA to soil markedly enhances the assimilation of soil Hg by P. giganteum and transformation of Hg within itself, with observed increases in Hg concentrations in roots, stems, and leaves by 1.1, 4.3, and 18.9 times, respectively, compared to the control. This enhancement is attributed to that γ-PGA can facilitate the hydrophilic and bioavailable of soil Hg. Besides, γ-PGA can stimulate the abundance of Hg-resistance bacteria Proteobacteria in the rhizosphere of P. giganteum , thus increasing the mobility and uptake of soil Hg by P. giganteum roots. Moreover, the hydrophilic nature of Hg-γ-PGA complexes supports their transport via the apoplastic pathway , across the epidermis, and through the Casparian strip , eventually leading to immobilization in the mesophyll tissues. This study provides novel insights into the mechanisms of Hg phytoextraction, demonstrating that γ-PGA significantly enhances the effectiveness of P. giganteum in Hg uptake and translocation. The findings suggest a promising approach for the remediation of Hg-contaminated soil, offering a sustainable and efficient strategy for environmental management and health risk mitigation.

Conversion of Cellulose to γ-Valerolactone over Raney Ni Catalyst Using H2O as a Hydrogen Source

Yalin Guo,Zhuang Ma,Binbin Jin,Limin Ma,Guodong Yao

The sustainable valorization of lignocellulosic biomass into high-value platform chemicals presents a crucial pathway for reducing reliance on fossil resources. Gamma (γ)-valerolactone (GVL) has gained recognition as a versatile bio-derived compound with broad applications in renewable energy systems and green chemical synthesis. While conventional GVL production strategies from carbohydrate biomass typically depend on noble metal catalysts paired with high-pressure hydrogen gas, these approaches face substantial technical barriers including catalyst costs, hydrogen storage requirements, and operational safety concerns in large-scale applications. This work develops an innovative catalytic system utilizing earth-abundant iron for in situ hydrogen generation through water splitting, integrated with Raney Ni as the hydrogenation catalyst. The designed two-stage process enables direct conversion of cellulose—first through acid hydrolysis to levulinic acid (LA) followed by catalytic hydrogenation to GVL without intermediate purification. Through systematic parameter optimization, a remarkable 61.9% overall GVL yield from cellulose feedstock was achieved. Furthermore, the methodology’s versatility was demonstrated through wheat straw conversion experiments, yielding 24.6% GVL. This integrated methodology explores a technically feasible pathway for direct cellulose-to-GVL conversion utilizing abundant water as the hydrogen source, effectively overcoming the critical limitations associated with conventional hydrogenation technologies regarding hydrogen infrastructure and process safety.

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Formal Hydroamination of Allyl Alcohols to γ-Amino Alcohols via a Borrowing Hydrogen Process

Mengxuan Bai,Xuetong Zhang,Shengxin Zhang,Caicai Zhang,Zhiqiang Hao,Jin Lin

γ-Amino alcohol is of great importance, as a broad number of bioactive and pharmaceutical alcohols contain this motif. Herein, a selective formal anti-Markovnikov hydroamination of allyl alcohols to access γ-amino alcohols has been achieved by using NNN-pincer Ru complexes. The electronic effect of the catalysts is critical for their catalytic performance. A wide substrate scope (65 examples) and up to 96% yields were achieved at low catalyst loadings via a borrowing hydrogen (BH) process in one pot. This protocol was easily extended to the hydroamination of both primary and secondary allyl alcohols and applications for the synthesis of drug derivatives.
