A series of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) loaded core/shell electrospun fibers is reported. The fibers have shells made of Eudragit S100 (ES-100), and drug-loaded cores comprising poly(vinylpyrrolidone), ethyl cellulose , ES-100, or drug alone. Monolithic 5-FU loaded ES-100 fibers were also prepared for comparison. Electron microscopy showed all the fibers to have smooth cylindrical shapes, and clear core–shell structures were visible for all samples except the monolithic fibers. 5-FU was present in the amorphous physical form in all the materials prepared. Dissolution studies showed that the ES-100 shell was not able to prevent drug release at pH 1.0, even though the polymer is completely insoluble at this pH: around 30–80% of the maximum drug release was reached after 2 h immersion at pH 1.0. These observations are ascribed to the low molecular weight of 5-FU permitting it to diffuse through pores in the ES-100 coating, and the relatively high acid solubility of the drug providing a thermodynamic impetus for this to happen. In addition, the fibers were observed to be broken or merged following 2 h at pH 1.0, giving additional escape routes for the 5-FU.

5-hydroxymethylfurfural is a common byproduct in food. However, its effect on growth and development remains incompletely understood. This study investigated the developmental toxicity of 5-HMF to Drosophila larvae. The growth and development of Drosophila melanogaster fed with 5–50 mM 5-HMF was monitored, and its possible mechanism was explored. It was found that 5-HMF prolonged the developmental cycle of Drosophila melanogaster (25 mM and 50 mM). After 5-HMF intake, the level of reactive oxygen species in the third instar larvae increased by 1.23–1.40 fold, which increased the level of malondialdehyde and caused changes in antioxidant enzymes. Moreover, the nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 antioxidant signaling pathway and the expression of heat shock protein genes were affected. At the same time, 5-HMF disrupted the glucose and lipid metabolism in the third instar larvae, influencing the expression level of key genes in the insulin signal pathway. Furthermore, 5-HMF led to intestinal oxidative stress, and up-regulated the expression of the pro-apoptotic gene, consequently impacting intestinal health. In short, 5-HMF causes oxidative stress, disturbs glucose and lipid metabolism and induces intestinal damage, damaging related signaling pathways, and ultimately affecting the development of Drosophila melanogaster .

We have developed a simple method for the colorimetric detection of hypochlorite in tap water based on the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). In aqueous solution at pH 4.0, hypochlorite, an oxidant, rapidly converts colourless TMB to a blue oxidized form. The presence of hypochlorite in tap water can in this way easily be detected with the naked eye, based on the obvious colour change. The system can detect concentrations of hypochlorite as low as 0.05 μM with an excellent linear relationship and good selectivity.

The electron-donating substituted indole is generally difficult to be polymerized into high-quality film. The electrochemical polymerization of the electron-donating 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT)-monosubstituted indole may be a challenge. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel fluorescent comonomer based on the combination of indole and EDOT groups, namely, 5-(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4- b ][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-1 H -indole (EDTI), and subsequently electrodeposited into flawless freestanding flexible poly(5-(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4- b ][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-1 H -indole) (PEDTI) film with a resistance of 60 MΩ/cm in CH 2 Cl 2 containing 0.1 M Bu 4 NBF 4 . Electrochemical results showed that the oxidation onset potential of EDTI was at 0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl, which was lower than those of indole (0.96 V vs Ag/AgCl) and EDOT (1.35 V vs Ag/AgCl). FTIR spectra indicated that the polymerization of EDTI occurred at the 5-position on thiophene ring and 2,3-positions on indole ring, forming the crosslinking polymer film. The colors of as-prepared PEDTI could switch reversibly from purple to brown under applied potentials of 1.3 and −1.3 V, which were distinctly different from those of polyindole, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), and poly(EDOT-bis-substituted indole) (PETI). Fluorescence spectral studies revealed that the comonomer and corresponding polymer were good blue-green light emitters. These results implied that PEDTI had potential applications for photoelectric devices such as electrochromic devices, light-emitting diodes, and fluorescence sensors. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A ZIF-8-derived Fe–N–C single-atom catalyst is developed for HMF-to-FFCA oxidation. • The catalyst obtained 99.4% HMF conversion and 94.2% FFCA yield under mild conditions. • O 2 • and 1 O 2 are identified as the key reactive species governing selective oxidation. • Fe–N x moieties are confirmed as the active centers for O₂ activation and selectivity. The catalytic valorization of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to high-value chemicals is critical for sustainable chemistry. However, 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA), a key oxidation intermediate, remains a significant challenge. Herein, a Fe N C single-atom catalyst derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is developed for efficient HMF-to-FFCA conversion under mild conditions (90 °C, 0.1 MPa O 2 ). It has been revealed that the isolated Fe–N x sites are dispersed on a nitrogen-doped carbon matrix. The optimized catalyst delivers 99.4% HMF conversion with 94.2% FFCA yield within one hour, and exhibits excellent catalytic and structural stability over consecutive reaction cycles. Mechanistic studies combining Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and radical trapping experiments demonstrate that superoxide radicals (O 2 • ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) govern the selective oxidation pathway. Active-site poisoning with thiocyanate confirms the essential role of Fe–N x moieties in oxygen activation. This work presents a robust non-noble metal catalyst platform for HMF valorization and advances the fundamental understanding of single-atom catalyst design for biomass oxidation reactions. A catalyst with high selectivity for the catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 5-formyl-2-furanic acid (FFCA) in alkaline media was successfully developed by ultrasonic intercalation of a copper‑iron layered double hydroxide (CuFe-LDH) platelets with an iron phthalocyanine (FePc) complex. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, H 2 O 2 concentration, NaOH concentration and amount of catalyst on HMF conversion and FFCA selectivity were systematically investigated. Under the optimized testing condition the developed FePc-CuFe catalyst delivered a HMF conversion of 85% with a FFCA selectivity of 81.8%. Further, the catalyst showed excellent stability over 5 testing cycles.

MOF-5 is an emerging semiconductor material with a great potential in photocatalytic wastewater treatment . However, its inherent deficiencies, such as the narrow range of photo-response, the fast recombination of photoinduced carriers and the unstable structure, largely limit its further application. In this work, super biocompatible N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQD) derived from the green precursor, coconut shells, were in situ grown on MOF-5 via a facile solvothermal method to construction of 0D/3D N-CQD/MOF-5 photocatalyst with an enhanced photoreduction ability. A sustainable and pollution-free preparation process of N-CQD/MOF-5 photocatalyst was delivered and biomass waste resource was effectively utilized via this method. This well-designed photocatalyst with the optimized 1% N-CQD loading presented a considerable photoreduction rate of Cr (VI), which was 2.5 times higher that of pure MOF-5. It also possessed a strong structural stability and reusability even after multiple tests. The boosting photocatalysis activity could be attributed to the doping of N-CQD, who not only act as an electron acceptor to separate the photoexcited electrons and holes effectively, but also play a vital role as a photosensitizer to improve the visible-light absorption. Furthermore, the influence of activation methods on the photocatalytic activity of MOF-5 were also investigated theoretically. For the purpose of clarifying the potentially photocatalytic mechanism of N-CQD/MOF-5 in photoreduction Cr (VI), a series of tests involving photoelectrical characterizations and fluorescence spectroscopy were executed. Therefore, this study provides an innovative photocatalytic system for an enhanced photoreduction performance of Cr (VI) of MOF-5.

A series of HZSM-5/MCM-41 composite molecular sieves (HZM-Ns ( x )) were prepared by employing nano-ZSM-5 zeolites with the SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratios ( x ) of 50, 100 and 150 as the source. These materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N 2 adsorption–desorption measurement, and NH 3 temperature-programmed desorption. The catalytic cracking of endothermic hydrocarbon fuels over the HZM-Ns with n -decane as model was evaluated at atmospheric pressure and 500 °C. The effect of the parent zeolite, mesopore and SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio on the structure, acidity, and catalytic performance of HZM-Ns was investigated. The HZM-Ns exhibited a skeletal matrix with nano-sized HZSM-5 particles (200–300 nm) with a controllable acidity well dispersed in and microporous–mesoporous hierarchical pores. The mesoporous structure improved the diffusion of the reactants and products in the pores, and the HZSM-5 nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in the MCM-41 matrix supplied a proper acidity, shorter channels, and a higher specific surface area for reaction. These resulted in a high catalytic activity, a high selectivity to light olefins and a long lifetime for n -decane catalytic cracking. The HZM-N (150) exhibited the excellent conversion, a high selectivity to light olefins and a long lifetime due to low diffusion resistance, high specific surface area, and appropriate acid distribution and strength, with the increasing SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 ratio.

BACKGROUND 5-(Aminomethyl)-2-furanmethanol (AMF), used widely in medicinal chemistry, is usually synthesized by the reductive amination of furfural or 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with ammonia. However, a challenging task when synthesizing this furyl primary amine is to enhance the selectivity of the product due to its high nucleophilicity. Conventional measures have used excessive liquid ammonia and precious metal catalysts. Usually, the molar ratio of ammonia to substrate is up to 30:1. This study employed aqueous ammonia to synthesize AMF by the direct reductive amination of HMF using the non-noble metal Ni/SBA-15 catalyst. RESULTS The Ni/SBA-15 catalyst displayed higher catalytic selectivity in the reductive amination of HMF to AMF compared to other precious metal catalysts, such as Ru/C, Pd/C and Pt/C. The AMF yield of 89.8% was obtained at the relatively mild reaction temperature of 100 °C for 4 h. After the fifth cycle, an acceptable decrease in catalytic activity with 74.2% yield of AMF was observed. CONCLUSION An improved process was developed for preparing AMF by the reductive amination of HMF with aqueous ammonia using the non-noble Ni/SBA-15 catalyst. The high selectivity of nickel catalyst is attributed mainly to the moderate catalytic activity. Moreover, a small amount of water enhanced the yield of AMF by promoting the formation of ammonium ions to prevent the further side reaction of AMF with HMF. Results of recycling experiments and analyses showed that agglomeration, loss and oxidization of nickel species together with carbon deposition were responsible for the slight deactivation of the catalyst. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an important index for evaluating the quality of honey. In the present study, the recovery of HMF via the salting-out-assisted liquid–liquid extraction (SALLE) was systematically investigated to develop a simple, rapid, and effective method for the determination of HMF in honey. Results indicated that at the concentration of 70 : 30 (acetonitrile : H2O, v/v), sodium carbonate showed the best recovery of HMF from honey with the 0.5 g addition amount of salt. Compared with two other homogenous liquid–liquid extraction methods, i.e. subzero temperature-assisted liquid–liquid extraction and hydrophobic solvent-assisted liquid–liquid extraction, SALLE showed an advantage of higher recovery for HMF. In addition, fructose and glucose were analyzed to investigate the residue of sugars in the extractive. Results demonstrated that the SALLE method could dramatically reduce the residual contents of these two sugars. In addition, SALLE showed the advantages of less consumption of samples and extraction solvents. Finally, the developed method was fully validated and applied for real honey samples. The analysis results obtained using the present method were comparable to those obtained using the official method; this indicated that the proposed method could be used as an alternative method for the routine quality control of HMF in honey.

TiO 2 /ZSM-5 composites with enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic properties were synthesized via regulation of synthesis pH value and post (acid/alkali) treatment of ZSM-5. The influences of synthesis pH values and post-treatment of ZSM-5 on microstructure, adsorption and photocatalytic properties of the composites were investigated. The methyl orange was used to assess the adsorption and photocatalytic properties of the samples. The results showed that the synthesis pH values and acid/alkali treatment had significant influences on the microstructure, adsorption and photocatalytic properties of TiO 2 /ZSM-5 composites. The composites synthesized at pH 7 had a relatively higher TiO 2 content, smaller anatase crystallite size, greater specific surface area, the most effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, the fastest interfacial charge transfer, and therefore exhibited excellent adsorption and photocatalytic properties. Acid treatment could significantly increase the specific surface area, Si/Al ratio of ZSM-5, the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, and amount of produced active free radicals •O 2 – and •OH. The TiO 2 /acid-treated ZSM-5 exhibited excellent photodegradation with 99.3 % methyl orange in 150 min, which is higher than that of the TiO 2 /ZSM-5 and TiO 2 /alkali-treated ZSM-5.
