Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme with unparallele d catalytic activity in CO2 hydration. However, its high cost and low stability seriously restrict its industrial application in CO2 absorption. Constructing CA mimics is a promising strategy to overcome the above limitations. However, to date, a majority of mimics reported are suffering from laborious synthetic processes, harsh synthetic conditions, and costly ligand materials. Therefore, developing novel CA mimics with higher applicability remains a high priority. Due to the structural similarity between zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)-8 and natural carbonic anhydrase (CA), ZIF-8 may be considered as a potential CA-mimetic catalyst for CO2 absorption. To validate this assumption, ZIF-8 and hydrophilic ZIF-8-TA were synthesized and the results from subsequent CO2 absorption experiments indicated that the synthesized catalysts could significantly enhance CO2 absorption in water and common alkaline solutions. The addition of 1.0 wt % ZIF-8 in water and different alkaline solutions respectively increased the average CO2 absorption rate by 42.35 and 6.78–24.51%, while the addition of 1.0 wt % of ZIF-8-TA increased the CO2 absorption rate by 81.80 and 18.16–34.39%, respectively. Besides, both catalysts possessed excellent reusability that they retained high performance even after five cycles of absorption and regeneration. Through esterase experiments, it was confirmed that ZIF-8 and ZIF-8-TA exhibited higher CA-mimetic activity than many reported CA mimics. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it was indicated that the catalytic CO2 hydration pathway of ZIF-8 primarily involves four steps, including nucleophilic attack, rearrangement, replacement, and deprotonation, which is similar to that of natural CA, while ZIF-8-TA does not undergo the rearrangement step. Moreover, the electron-donation effect and van der Waals interaction of tannic acid endow ZIF-8-TA with higher catalytic activity.

Zeolite imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8), serving as a promising adsorbent for wastewater treatment, is limited in practical wastewater treatment due to its polycrystalline powder form resulting in poor recoverability. Herein, the millimeter-scale ZIF-8@porous mullite beads were prepared by the seeded-secondary growth method. The surface of the porous mullite beads is fully encapsulated by nanoscale ZIF-8 crystals, and the ZIF-8 crystals are anchored by mullite whiskers. This composition provides ZIF-8 with a stable macroscopic structure and maintains the exposure of its adsorption sites. Therefore, the ZIF-8@porous mullite beads exhibited good adsorption performance toward methyl orange (MO) and orange G (OG) in the aqueous solution. The analysis of adsorption kinetics indicating the adsorption efficiency of ZIF-8@mullite-w on MO and OG is influenced by the concentration of adsorbates and the adsorption sites. The maximum adsorption of ZIF-8@porous mullite beads on MO and OG was 16.5289 and 5.111 mg/g, respectively.

Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes are widely used for the separation of similar molecular kinetic diameter gas. However, their performance is limited by a large amount of discontinuous porous structures and a few adsorption affinity sites. Herein, we first prepared magnetic Co@NC@ZIF-8 nanoparticles , followed by introducing it into the polyimides matrix to design precursor membrane with vertical nanochain-like particle distribution by magnetic field induction. Afterwards, hybrid carbon molecular sieve (HCMS) membranes were prepared by pyrolyzing precursor with high-temperature under N 2 atmosphere, which had ordered microporous architecture and Co-N-C structure. Resultant HCMS membranes prepared by magnetic field induction had excellent gas separation performance, whose CO 2 , N 2 and CH 4 permeabilities were 27,050, 2614 and 622 Barrer, with CO 2 /N 2 , CO 2 /CH 4 and N 2 /CH 4 selectivities of 10.4, 43.5 and 4.2 respectively. These values far exceeded 2019 CO 2 /CH 4 and 2008 N 2 /CH 4 upper bounds as well as approached 2008 CO 2 /N 2 upper bound. The superior performance resulted from the vertically ordered nanochain-like channels for gas transport, which dramatically shortens the transport path of gas molecules to intensify shape sieving potential. Moreover, the Co-N-C structure on the wall of channels could facilitate CO 2 transport due to the π complexation. Additionally, a large quantity of nitrogen sites in the carbonized Co@NC@ZIF-8 enhance CO 2 adsorption selectivity owing to the acid-base interaction. More remarkably, after 30-day aging testing, it was found that HCMS membranes prepared by magnetic field induction had exceptional aging resistance compared to the pristine CMS membranes and one without magnetic field induction under the same aging environments.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes have great potential applications in nanofiltration. However, preparing continuous and intact ZIF membranes on the surface of a substrate remains challenging. In this study, we assembled ZIF-8 nanoparticles in situ in the pores of a porous alumina substrate via a freezing-assisted counter-diffusion method. Although a continuous ZIF-8 membrane was not formed on the surface of the substrate, the obtained nano-confined composite membrane was dense enough to separate antibiotics and salt. The rejection rate of tetracycline was above 99 %, while that of sodium chloride was below 20 %, demonstrating good antibiotic desalination performance. The permeance of the ZIF-8 membrane reached 23.5 LMH/bar. Due to the nano-confined structure, the obtained ZIF-8 composite membrane was robust. Besides, polishing the surface layer did not reduce the separation performance. Moreover, sulfurizing the ZIF-8 membrane improved its stability in water. It also improved the permeance to 31.3 LMH/bar, which remained stable for 100 h. Therefore, the obtained robust ZIF-8 membrane and its derivative composite membrane fabricated via freezing-assisted counter-diffusion have great potential in antibiotic desalination.

A hierarchically porous ZIF-8 (HZIF-8) with pH-responsive and antibacterial activity was constructed using bicomponent hydrogel as template. The synthesized HZIF-8 was applied to load the antibacterial drug berberine hydrochloride (BBH). In vitro release studies showed that [email protected] and [email protected] displayed a sustained drug release profile, and the drug release rate increased with the decreasing pH value. The [email protected] with the highest drug loading capacity also had the highest cumulative drug release rate. At the end of 24 h, the cumulative release of BBH encapsulated in HZIFS, HZIFM and HZIFP were 92.07%, 86.60% and 88.00% at pH 5.0, respectively, higher than that of ZIF-8 (84.07%). Furthermore, in vitro antibacterial testing revealed that [email protected] exhibited efficient and long-lasting effects against Staphylococcus aureus , which was attributed to the synergistic bacteriostatic effect of Zn 2+ and BBH released by the structural degradation of [email protected] under acidic conditions. In conclusion, the study provides a strategy for synthesizing HZIF-8 and demonstrates the potential of HZIF-8 as a pH-responsive nanoplatforms for antibacterial applications.

Although quantum dots (QDs) have unique properties that are different from conventional semiconductors, their photocatalytic activity and stability are far from expectations, and the preparation of semiconductor composites has become an important means to improve their photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. A convenient and safe coordination-assisted self-assembly method was used to encapsulate QDs into metal–organic frameworks and further formed AgInS2@ZIF-8/ZnS nanostructures by converting part of ZIF-8 into ZnS composite materials, which enhanced their photocatalytic hydrogen production performance and cycling stability. The results show that AgInS2@ZIF-8/ZnS nanocomposites have the highest photocatalytic activity (the average hydrogen production reaches 9.79 mmol·g–1·h–1; λ > 420 nm) after 6 h of sulfurization, which is far greater than that of AgInS2 QDs. Compared with the AgInS2@ZIF-8 composite, their performance is improved by nearly 10 times. In conclusion, a simple, safe, and easily-controllable method is used to prepare a novel and efficient photocatalytic material, which provides a new idea about the rational design of novel QD photocatalytic composites.

Due to the wider bandgap and low electron discharge capacity, the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) shows low photocatalytic performance compared with conventional semiconductor materials. To enhance the photocatalytic activity of ZIF-8, the ZIF-8@AgNWs composite is synthesized via the in situ growth method using silver nanowires (AgNWs) as the photo-enhanced material. The obtained ZIF-8@AgNWs exhibit the fully encapsulated shell-core structure of ZIF-8-AgNWs. The UV−vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) analysis shows that the addition of AgNWs leads to a significant increase in light absorption of the ZIF-8@AgNWs composite, and the bandgap of the ZIF-8@AgNWs is 2.9 eV, with a significant decrease compared to pure ZIF-8 (4.96 eV). The ZIF-8@AgNWs-2 achieves the best photocatalytic activity for methylene blue (MB) degradation. Its degradation efficiency reaches 94%, and its apparent rate constant is 0.04371 min −1 . Herein, a novel strategy for the MOF-based photocatalytic materials with higher photocatalytic activity is provided.

The volume penalty of nano-porous materials causes low methane volumetric adsorption capacity, and the contradiction between it and gravimetric adsorption capacity limits the application of nano-porous materials in different scenarios. Here, we prepared a composite nano-porous material of ZIF-8@AC to bridge the gap using a synergistic approach of adsorption and hydration, and methane isothermal adsorption in wet ZIF-8@AC was evaluated under low temperature. Due to the hybrid effect of adsorption and hydration, methane storage capacity in the nano-porous material was enhanced. When 100 mg activated carbon was doped, methane gravimetric adsorption capacity in ZIF-8@AC increases by 6.78 % and 30.34 % comparing with that in parent AC and ZIF-8 separately. In addition, the formation of hydrate increases methane storage density in mesopores, macropores and intergranular pores, giving rise to large methane volumetric adsorption, which increases by 12.65 % and 53.24 % comparing with that in parent AC and ZIF-8, respectively. Moreover, hydration efficiency in confined pore space was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), while a high-resolution electron microscope was applied to record hydrate morphologies. It was found that hydrate mainly forms in large pore spaces, and the enhanced intergranular pores serve as nanoreactors to significantly improve the hydration efficiency, which is greatly influenced by local water distribution. These findings provide a new strategy to enhance methane adsorption via adsorption and hydration hybrid approach and would shed light on the application of composite nano-porous materials in the adsorption of natural gas.

The design and preparation of excellent microwave absorbing materials is of great importance facing increasingly negative effects of electromagnetic (EM) wave radiation and interference. Combining metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanofibers is a valuable approach to improve microwave absorption performance . Herein, C/zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofiber composites were synthesized using the seed-assisted in situ electrospinning method , with the precursor being a zinc-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8). The unique porous structure and the heterointerfaces formed between C and ZnO facilitated the scattering and multiple reflections of microwaves. On account of the combination of interfacial polarization loss, dipole polarization loss and conduction loss , the C/ZnO nanofiber composites exhibited outstanding microwave absorption performance. The minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −58 dB at 7.5 GHz as well as an effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) of 6.5 GHz was achieved. This work provides an innovative methodology for developing highly efficient microwave absorbing materials using a combination of carbon materials and MOF nanoparticles .

The substantial optical features of perovskite quantum dots (PQD) lead to rapid growth in the investigation of their surface and lattice doping for optoelectronic and biochemical sensor advancements. Herein, we have used the surface ligand crafting model of PQD by ammonia and its optimum response to recognise ammonia in the sensing cellulose paper. The PQD with acetyl amine and octanoic acid capped were synthesized and entrapped in zeolites imidazole framework to delay the instant quenching and envisaged response to ammonia with high sensitivity. The hybrid perovskite quantum dots and Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (PQD@ZIF-8) materials were further immersed in cellulose paper for solid-state sensor fabrication for the detection of ammonia by naked-eye and a Xiaomi Note-5 mobile camera. The ammonia was measured with high sensitivity at ambient conditions, with a detection limit of 16 ppm and a linear detection range of 1 to 500 ppm. This research provides a new platform for designing sensor selectivity and sensitivity, which could be used to further develop fluorescent nanomaterials-based sensors for small molecule detection.

Metal–organic framework (MOF) materials have great potential for solving dye contamination problems due to their excellent organic dye adsorption properties. However, MOF adsorbents present a tremendous drawback of poor separability. Herein, core–shell Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS with abundant active sites and sensitive magnetic responses was synthesized in one step via simultaneously introducing imidazole ligands and poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) modifiers into the dispersion of Fe3O4 microspheres. These magnetic Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS microspheres can be magnetically separated and recovered in only 10 seconds. Moreover, the addition of PSS increases the active sites of Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS, which is more favorable for the adsorption of organic dyes. The maximum adsorption capacity for crystal violet (CV) can reach 382 mg g−1. The adsorption process was consistent with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The adsorption mechanism of Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS for CV is mainly attributed to electrostatic interactions and π–π interactions. The effects of solution pH and coexisting ions on the adsorption capacity were adequately discussed. These studies suggest that Fe3O4@ZIF-8-PSS not only has efficient adsorption properties but can also be easily separated by external magnetic fields after being used for organic dye wastewater treatment, which may endow it with considerable potential for wastewater treatment.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most promising membrane materials for olefin/paraffin separations. However, most of MOF membranes have a thickness over 1 µm, which greatly compromises the permeation flux. While previous studies are focused on increasing crystal nucleus density on the substrates, achieving ultrathin membrane via modulation of the crystal growth is lacking. Herein, an inhibited Ostwald ripening (IOR) strategy is proposed to fabricate ultrathin ZIF-8 membranes, through incorporating polymer-based inhibitors into the membrane formula to inhibit the growth process of ZIF-8 crystals via the metal–organic coordination. The IOR process can be readily tuned by varying the functional groups, molecular weights, and concentrations of the inhibitors, enabling a facile control over the IOR degree and thus the membrane thickness. Consequently, the thickness of ZIF-8 membranes can be dramatically reduced to 180 nm. The resulting membranes exhibit ultrahigh C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation performance with C 3 H 6 permeance of 386 GPU and C 3 H 6 /C 3 H 8 separation factor of 120. It is anticipated that this straightforward and efficient IOR strategy can open a new avenue for the fabrication of ultrathin MOF membranes to tackle many critical molecular separations.
