A cathode photoelectrochemical assay of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase activity based on Ag-AgI-CNTs composite and surface multisite strand displacement amplification

Keqin Deng,Jing Xiao,Zhang Liu,Chunxiang Li,Jinglun Wang,Qingfeng Yi,Haowen Huang,Hu Zhou

ABSTRCT Photocathode-based assay is anti-interference for real sample detection . Photocathode produces low photocurrent signal and gives rise to poor sensitivity. Herein, a novel cathode photoelectrochemical (CPEC) sensing platform based on Ag-AgI-CNTs as photocathode material and K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] as photoelectron acceptor was established. Since [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3- effectively accepted photoelectrons from Ag-AgI-CNTs, it greatly enhanced the CPEC response. Combining a surface multisite strand displacement amplification (SMSDA) strategy, the CPEC platform was applied for the activity assay of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT). In this proposal, oligo dT primer tethered on CPEC platform was in-situ extended to generate a polyA tail. Then the polyA tail formed a stable multi-point hybrid structure with the adjacent oligo dT. After launching the SMSDA, the CPEC platform was covered by more elongated polynucleotide chains and network, which acutely hampered the photoelectron transfer (eT) between photocathode and electron acceptor and caused a reduced photocurrent. The CPEC sensor possessed a satisfactory linear response from 6 × 10 -5 -0.1 U and a low detection limit of 1.1 × 10 -5 U. The strategy offered a more specific and sensitive method for TdT activity assay . It was feasible in the field of TdT-based biochemical research, drug screening, and disease diagnosis.

Synthesis and Characterization of Nanoalumina and CNTs-Reinforced Microcapsules with n-Dodecane as a Phase Change Material for Cold Energy Storage

Beibei Dong,Songlin Li,Xinwen Zhang,Jinghang Wang,Hao Peng

A series of microencapsulated phase change materials (MEPCMs) containing nanoalumina-reinforced n-dodecane (C12) as core materials and modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced melamine–formaldehyde (MF) resin as shell materials was synthesized successfully via in situ polymerization. The effects of CNTs and nanoalumina on the morphology/thermal performance of the MEPCMs were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), laser flash analyzer (LFA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that adding CNTs or nanoalumina had little influence on the spherical structure of the MEPCMs, but the supercooling degree of MEPCMs was decreased obviously. The reinforced MEPCMs exhibited excellent thermal durability and distinguished cycling characteristics during the 100th thermal cycling test. It should be noted that the thermal conductivity of MEPCMs was improved distinctly and had a linear growth with the addition of CNTs. In particular, the thermal conductivity of the MEPCMs was improved by 380.8% with the incorporation of 3.3 wt % (0.5 g) CNTs. Furthermore, reinforced MEPCMs presented a superior thermal stability, and its decomposition temperature was increased by about 10 °C than that for MEPCMs without nanoparticles.

Membrane fouling mitigation and EPS reduction by CNTs-TiO2-PEDOT modified anode-membrane in Membrane Electro-Bioreactor (MEBR) treating mariculture wastewater

Jing Song,Yihan Li,Shihan Wang,Rui Han,Yu Ba,Ying Liu,Shengqiang Fan

Membrane Electro-Bioreactor (MEBR), with dual function of electrochemical in-situ membrane fouling mitigation and pollutants removal by chlorine evolution reaction (CIER), has emerged as a promising technology of treating mariculture wastewater. However, the fouling control mechanism regarding extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) variations and related microbial community is still unclear. In this study, MEBR was developed with conducting anode-membrane modified by CNTs-TiO 2 -PEDOT for fouling resistant and ammonia/nitrite removal. The CIER electroactivity was enhanced that onset potential negatively shifted from 1.12 to 0.98 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode). Ammonia removal rate (71.49 mgN/(L·day)) was 176.8 % higher and nitrite was significantly reduced in MEBR than MBR at HRT of 45 min. Membrane fouling was mitigated in MEBR that operation duration was extended by 40 % compared with MBR. The EPS of cake layer on the membrane surface rather than the biofilters was found the main fouling contributor. The significant reduction in LB-EPSp (65.4 %) in MEBR (33.8 % in MBR) was the dominant factor contributing to membrane fouling alleviation, which highly depended on the relative abundance of Hyphomonas and Hirschia . This study will be beneficial for fouling control in seawater treatment.

Thin film composite reverse osmosis membranes with metal-organic coordination complexes stabilized CNTs interlayer for enhanced removal of trace organic contaminants

Lin Liu,Xiaocheng Lin,Weiyi Li,Xin Liu,Fuqiang Fan,Yi Yang,Ying Mei

Reverse osmosis (RO) has been recognized as a reliable technique for wastewater reclamation. To enhance its rejection of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs), a novel strategy was proposed to improve reverse osmosis (RO) membranes by fabricating thin-film nanocomposite membrane (TFNi) with a TA-Fe 3+ /CNTs interlayer. The TFNi-30 membrane was obtained by optimizing the loading capacity. This optimized membrane gave rise to an enhanced water permeance of 3.2 ± 0.2 L m -2  h -1 bar -1 , which was two times higher than that of the control membrane (1.1 ± 0.2 L m -2  h -1 bar -1 ), while achieving a considerably higher rejection of inorganic salts and trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) thanks to the formation of a denser polyamide rejection layer. In addition, the specific roles of the interlayer structure in determining the separation performance of RO membranes were investigated by tailoring the support-free RO membranes and comparing them with the conventional membranes. This study would provide a peer reference for designing high performance RO membranes for wastewater reclamation via the TFNi strategy.

Co-assembly of stearoylated cellulose nanocrystals and GO (or CNTs) for the construction of superhydrophobic hierarchical structure with enhanced photothermal conversion

Wei Huang,Xiangyu Tang,Wuming Fan,Qianqian Sun,Yonggui Wang,Zefang Xiao,Yanjun Xie

The development of photothermal materials with high photothermal-conversion efficiencies is important in a range of applications, such as power generation, sterilization, desalination , and energy-production. To date, a few reports have been published related to improving the photothermal conversion performances of photothermal materials based on self-assembled nanolamellae. Herein, hybrid films of co -assembled stearoylated cellulose nanocrystals (SCNCs) and polymer-grafted graphene oxide (pGO)/polymer-grafted carbon nanotubes (pCNTs) were prepared. The chemical compositions , microstructures, and morphologies of these products were characterized, and it was found that the self-assembled SCNC structures exhibited numerous surface nanolamellae due to crystallization of the long alkyl chains. The hybrid films (i.e., SCNC/pGO and SCNC/pCNTs films) consisted of ordered nanoflake structures, confirming the co-assembly behavior of the SCNCs with pGO or pCNTs. The melting temperature (~65 °C) and latent heat of melting (87.87 J/g) of SCNC 1.07 indicate its potential to induce the formation of nanolamellar pGO or pCNTs. Under light irradiation (50–200 mW/cm 2 ), the pCNTs exhibited a higher light absorption capacity than pGO, and as a result, the SCNC/pCNTs film exhibited the best photothermal performance and electrical conversion, ultimately demonstrating its potential for use as a solar thermal device in practical applications.

A novel molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor based on double sensitization by MOF/CNTs and Prussian blue for detection of 17β-estradiol

Dingding Duan,Xiaojing Si,Yaping Ding,Li Li,Guohong Ma,Lu Zhang,Bingyu Jian

In this paper, we constructed MIL-53 (AlOHbdc, bdc = benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) /CNTs and Prussian blue (PB) as the double sensitization material of the sensing platform, in which the MIL-53/CNTs hybrid can not only increase the specific surface area but also increase the conductivity of the sensor and PB can play a role in amplifying electrical signals and accelerating electron transmission. Pyrrole was used as monomer and E2 was used as template for electropolymerization to form conductive film. Moreover, the overoxidation/dedoping elution method were used to simplify the experimental process. Under optimal conditions, the MIECS exhibited an excellent sensitivity and high selectivity with a wide linear response range between 10 −14 to 10 −9  mol L −1 and an estimated detection limit of 6.19 × 10 −15  mol L −1 .

Kai Xu,Xiaohong Chen,Honglei Zhou,Liming Bi,Shaoli Fu,Wei Li,Xinkuan Liu,Fengcang Ma,Ke Zhang,Ping Liu

CNTs/Cu-Al 2 O 3 composite powders were successfully synthesized by in situ CVD using Cu-Al 2 O 3 composite powders obtained by internal oxidation of Cu-Al alloy powders. The multi-walled CNTs are obtained without agglomeration and stand on the surface of the composite powders. One end of the CNTs is well bound to matrix. The Cu nanoparticle was the catalyst for the growth of CNTs on the composite powders and Al 2 O 3 on the surface of the Cu-Al 2 O 3 powder plays a key role in the growth process.

A Facile Electrophoretic Deposition Route to the Fe3O4/CNTs/rGO Composite Electrode as a Binder-Free Anode for Lithium Ion Battery

Yang Yang,Jiaqi Li,Dingqiong Chen,Jinbao Zhao

Fe3O4 is regarded as an attractive anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity, natural abundance, and low cost. However, the poor cyclic performance resulting from the low conductivity and huge volume change during cycling impedes its application. Here we have developed a facile electrophoretic deposition route to fabricate the Fe3O4/CNTs (carbon nanotubes)/rGO (reduced graphene oxide) composite electrode, simultaneously achieving material synthesis and electrode assembling. Even without binders, the adhesion and mechanical firmness of the electrode are strong enough to be used for LIB anode. In this specific structure, Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) interconnected by CNTs are sandwiched by rGO layers to form a robust network with good conductivity. The resulting Fe3O4/CNTs/rGO composite electrode exhibits much improved electrochemical performance (high reversible capacity of 540 mAh g–1 at a very high current density of 10 A g–1, and a remarkable capacity of 1080 mAh g–1 can be maintained after 450 cycles at 1 A g–1) compared with that of commercial Fe3O4 NPs electrode.

Novel silicon nanoparticles with nitrogen-doped carbon shell dispersed in nitrogen-doped graphene and CNTs hybrid electrode for lithium ion battery

Xiaofu Tang,Guangwu Wen,Yong Zhang,Dong Wang,Yan Song

A Si-rGO/NCT composite, in which Si nanoparticles (SiNPs) are enwrapped with N-doped carbon and combine with N-doped graphene and CNTs as conductive matrices synthesized by simple solution-mixing and carbonization process with pyrolyzing melamine formaldehyde resin (MFR) is developed as a promising candidate anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The N-doped carbon outside SiNPs can not only improve the electrical conductivity of the composite, but also buffer the stress causing by huge volume change of SiNPs during the lithiation/delithiation process. The Si-rGO/NCT composite exhibits high specific capacity and good cycling stability (892.3   mAh   g −1 at 100   mA   g −1 up to 100 cycles), as well as improved rate capability. This approach provides a very facile route to obtain silicon-based anode materials.

Catalytic degradation of 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid by peroxymonosulfate activated with nitrogen and sulfur co-doped CNTs-COOH loaded CuFe2O4

Xiaoling Zhang,Mingbao Feng,Liansheng Wang,Ruijuan Qu,Zunyao Wang

Recently, the toxicity of sunscreen has received extensive attention due to their potential endocrine disrupting effect. In the present study, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes loaded CuFe 2 O 4 (NS-CNTs/CuFe 2 O 4 ) catalyst was rationally designed and synthesized by co-precipitation method for the degradation of 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA, a typical sunscreen addition). The catalyst was fully characterized by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen gas uptake, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Then the kinetics, pathways and mechanisms of catalytic degradation of PBSA were studied in NS-CNTs/CuFe 2 O 4 activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) solution. The catalyst showed high catalytic activity, stability and reusability in PBSA removal. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments suggested that sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ) predominated in the activation of PMS by NS-CNTs/CuFe 2 O 4 . The synergistic effect between CuFe 2 O 4 and NS-CNTs was proposed in PMS activation. In addition, eight degradation intermediates of PBSA were identified by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC–MS), and degradation pathways were further proposed. Overall, this study provides insights of PBSA removal by NS-CNTs/CuFe 2 O 4 activated PMS at ambient temperature.

Shuya Xue,Jiamin Zou,Jiapeng Li,Jingkun Xu,Hui Chen,Linyu Wang,Yansha Gao,Xuemin Duan,Limin Lu

Precisely detecting trace pesticides and their residues in food products is crucial for ensuring food safety. Herein, a high-performance electrochemical sensing platform was developed for the detection of carbendazim (CBZ) using Co,N co-doped hollow carbon nanocage@carbon nanotubes (Co,N-HC@CNTs) obtained from core–shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 combined with a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). The Co,N-HC@CNTs exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance, benefitting from the synergistic effect of CNTs that provide a large specific surface area and excellent electrical conductivity , Co,N co-doped carbon nanocages that offer high electrocatalytic activity and hollow nanocage structures that ensure rapid diffusion kinetics. The conductive PEDOT-MIP provided specific binding sites for CBZ detection and significantly amplified the detection signal. The sensor showed superior selectivity for CBZ with an extremely low detection limit of 1.67 pmol L −1 . Moreover, the method was successfully applied to detect CBZ in tomato, orange and apple samples, achieving satisfactory recovery and accuracy, thus demonstrating its practical feasibility.
