In this study, Cr coatings were electrodeposited on carbon steel substrates by a trivalent Cr salt. The microstructure of the Cr coatings and their flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) resistance in simulated secondary circuit environments (10 MPa and 150 °C) of nuclear power plants were investigated. The results showed that the as-deposited coating was amorphous and crack-free. Annealing at 200 °C resulted in the decrease of Cr (OH) 3 and the increase of Cr and Cr 2 O 3 on the coating surface , which improved the corrosion resistance of the coating. The subsequent FAC test showed that the Cr coatings significantly improved the FAC resistance of the carbon steel substrate. The coating annealed at 200 °C exhibited better FAC resistance. The Cr-rich oxide film formed on the coatings was mainly Cr 2 O 3 , with a small amount of Cr and CrO 2 . Due to the galvanic effects caused by pinhole defects, abnormally grown annular deposits formed on the coating surface.

Microbial treatment of heavy metals is a low-cost and environmentally friendly method. During the treatment of chromium pollution, environmental media has a great impact on the efficiency of bacteria Cr immobilization. However, when Cr(VI) coexist with different metal cations , the reduction of Cr(VI) and the immobilization of Cr by bacteria are still unclear. In our research, although bacteria were significantly promoted the reduction of Cr(VI) with the coexistence of Mn(II), the bacteria produced the maximum of soluble organic Cr(III). In the performance of immobilization Cr, Mg(II) group has the highest chromium immobilizing rate. In addition, Cd(II) has the strongest inhibitory effect on Cr(VI) reduction and Cr immobilization. The SEM results show that Cr were stored in the cells. However, XRD analysis did not demonstrate the crystal structure. Our research investigated the ability of bacteria to reduce and immobilize Cr with the coexistence of 9 different metal ions, and provided a reference for a deeper understanding of the relationship between bacteria and metal ions.

A novel graphene oxide-dicationic ionic liquid composite (GO-DIL) was prepared by modifying graphene oxide (GO) with a dicationic ionic liquid (DIL), 3,3′-(butane-1,4-diyl) bis (1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium) chloride ([C 4 (MIM) 2 ]Cl 2 ). GO and GO-DIL were characterized by SEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS, and the materials were used for Cr(VI) adsorption. Batch adsorption studies showed that adsorption reached equilibrium within 40 min, and the optimal pH was 3, where the electrostatic attraction between GO-DIL and Cr(VI) was maximized. The maximum theoretical Cr(VI) adsorption capacity ( q m ) was 271.08 mg g −1 , and q m remained above 228.00 mg g −1 after five cycles. The adsorption data were fitted well by both the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. Furthermore, thermodynamics calculations revealed that adsorption was a spontaneous endothermic process. Importantly, electrostatic attraction between Cr(VI) and the protonated imidazole N + of GO-DIL played a critical role in Cr(VI) adsorption, and Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III). Thus, GO-DIL is predicted to be an effective adsorbent for Cr(VI) and other heavy metal ions in wastewater.

Abstract Supersaturated solid–solutions in a W–Cr alloy system were fabricated by conventional milling and plasma milling. The different extension mechanisms of the solid solubility that were created by ball milling with and without discharge plasma were studied. The solid–solubility of Cr in W for the P-milling W–Cr alloy system was higher, which indicates that plasma milling promotes the formation of W(Cr) solid–solution more easily than conventional milling. According to Miedema’s model, in the W–Cr alloy system, the free-energy change to form a W(Cr) solid solution by plasma milling is reduced compared with conventional milling because of the heating effect of the discharge plasma. Therefore, a higher stored energy in the grain boundaries and dislocations of the W–Cr nanograins during plasma milling makes it easier to overcome the thermodynamic barrier in the formation of a solid–solution, when compared with conventional milling. Recently, research interest in the application of lignin is growing, especially as adsorbent material. However, single lignin shows unsatisfactory adsorption performance, and thus, construction of lignin-based nanocomposites is worth considering. Herein, we introduced graphene oxide (GO) into lignin to form lignin/GO (LGNs) composite nanospheres by a self-assembly method. FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy illustrated that lignin and GO are tightly connected by hydrogen bonds. The LGNs as an environmental friendly material, also exhibit excellent performance for Cr(VI) removal. The maximum sorption capacity of LGNs is 368.78 mg g−1, and the sorption efficiency is 1.5 times than that of lignin nanospheres (LNs). The removal process of Cr(VI) via LGNs mainly relies on electrostatic interaction, and it also involves the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Moreover, LGNs still have high adsorption performance after repeating five times with the sorption capacity of 150.4 mg g−1 in 200 mg g−1 Cr(VI) solution. Therefore, the prepared lignin–GO composite nanospheres have enormous potential as a low-cost, high-absorbent and recyclable adsorbent, and can be used in wastewater treatment.

In order to further improve the photocatalytic performance of the SiO2/TiO2composite under visible light irradiation, curcumin-doped SiO2/TiO2nanocomposites were synthesized via directly incorporating it into the structure of SiO2/TiO2during the synthesis using an inexpensive and readily available natural pigment (curcumin) as doping agent. The physicochemical properties of SiO2/TiO2nanocomposites were characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, N2adsorption–desorption isotherms, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results indicate that all SiO2/TiO2nanocomposites exhibited an anatase phase with a typical mesoporous structure. It was found that the dope of curcumin in the SiO2/TiO2composite could decrease the crystal size, slightly improve the specific surface areas, significantly enhance the visible light absorption, and effectively narrow the band gap energy from 3.04 to 10(eV). Compared with bare SiO2/TiO2, the curcumin-doped SiO2/TiO2resulted in enhanced photocatalytic reduction activity for Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation, and the CTS (12) sample with the appropriate content of curcumin of 12 wt % shows the photocatalytic yield reaching 100% within 2.5 hours, which is larger than CT (12) without silica. This could be attributed to the curcumin doping and the synergetic effects of SiO2and TiO2in SiO2/TiO2nanocomposites.Keywords:curcumin pigment;SiO2/TiO2nanocomposites;visible photocatalyst;reduction of Cr (VI)

Cobalt-chrome-molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) alloy possesses outstanding strength, wear, and corrosion resistance and is a good material candidate for making dental and orthopedic implants. Spherical Co-Cr-Mo powder for additive manufacturing is usually costly due to the high-temperature melting processes and low yield of the powder with desirable particle size in the conventional melt-atomization process. A novel process for making spherical Co-Cr-Mo alloy powder through a simple meltless granulation and sintering process is described herein. The results indicate that the compositional segregation problem can be overcome and high-temperature operation avoided. Segregation-free powder was obtained after sintering above 1200°C. The powder was purified during sintering in a hydrogen atmosphere. The hydrogen purification mechanism is discussed with the aid of thermodynamic modeling using HSC Chemistry software. The oxygen content in the final powder can be controlled to < 0.2 wt.% for powder with particle size < 107 µ m. The final powder retained good spherical morphology.

In this paper, a metakaolin-based mesoporous geopolymer (GP-CTAB) was used as adsorbent for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) through a novel and simple synthetic route using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as an organic modifier. The application of GP-CTAB for the simultaneous removal of metal anions and cations in aqueous solution was studied for the first time. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET), and Barrett, Joyner, and Halenda (BJH) methods indicate that GP-CTAB is still geopolymer even in the presence of quaternary ammonium salt cations. The material was tested to simultaneously adsorb Cu(II) and Cr(VI) from an aqueous solution. The results show that GP-CTAB can adsorb anions simultaneously without sacrificing the adsorption properties of heavy metal cations, which is superior to conventional geopolymers. The maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of GP-CTAB for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) was 108.2 mg/g and 95.3 mg/g in the binary system, respectively. It was also found that the presence of Cu(II) in the solution promoted the adsorption of Cr(VI). Given this characteristic of GP-CTAB, it has shown great application prospects in the prevention and control of heavy metal pollution.

In this study, secondary pyrolysis oil-based drilling cuttings ash (OBDCA-sp) was used to remediate chromium (Cr)-contaminated soil. The effects of the OBCDA-sp mesh, OBCDA-sp dosage and soil moisture content on the removal of Cr (VI) were investigated. Subsequently, a kinetic experiment was conducted where the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models both fitted well on OBDCA-sp with the adsorption process of Cr (VI) in soil. The change of the chromium form indicated that the addition of OBCDA-sp transformed Cr from an effective state to a stable form, reducing its mobility and bioavailability . X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis were used to verify the potential mechanism of Cr (VI) removal; Ba, Fe, S, and P elements in OBCDA-sp were observed to play a significant role in the reduction of Cr (VI). The results from this study indicate that OBCDA-sp could be an emergent and promising alternative for the remediation of Cr-contaminated soil.

A novel fluorescent probe based on the static quenching and the inner filter effect between boron nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (B, N-CDs) and Cr(VI) was developed for the quantitative determination of Cr(VI) in real water samples. B, N-CDs were prepared using the hydrothermal method with ammonium citrate and bis(pinacolato) diboron as raw materials. Compared with undoped CDs, the fluorescence properties of the B, N-CDs were improved. The fluorescence quantum yield of the B, N-CDs was as high as 59.01%. After optimization of the experimental parameters, the B, N-CDs could be used as a fluorescence probe to detect Cr(VI). Strong linear correlation ( R 2 = 0.9986) was established in the Cr(VI) concentration range 0.3–500 μM, and a detection limit of 0.24 μM was achieved. Moreover, the B, N-CDs successfully detected Cr(VI) in real water samples, indicating that they have broad application prospects in the sensitive detection of Cr(VI).

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one promising technique to obtain high-purity hydrogen, therefore, exploiting inexpensive and high-efficiency HER electrocatalysts is a matter of cardinal significance under the background of achieving carbon neutrality. In this paper, a hydrothermal method was used to prepare the Cr-NiC2O4/NF (Ni foam) precursor. Then, the NiO-Cr-C/NF self-supporting HER catalyst was obtained by heating the precursor at 400 °C. The catalyst presents a 3D cellular nanospheres structure which was composed of 2D nanosheets. Microstructure characterization shows that Cr and C elements were successfully doped into NiO. The results of electrochemical measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that under the synergy of Cr and C, the conductivity of NiO was improved, and the Gibbs free energy of H* (∆GH*) value is optimized. As a result, in 1.0 M KOH solution the NiO-Cr-C/NF-3 (Ni:Cr = 7:3) HER catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 69 mV and a Tafel slope of 45 mV/dec when the current density is 10 mA·cm−2. Besides, after 20 h of chronopotentiometry, the catalytic activity is basically unchanged. It is demonstrated that C and Cr co-doping on the lattice of NiO prepared by a simple hydrothermal method and subsequent heat treatment to improve the catalytic activity and stability of the non-precious metal HER catalysts in an alkaline medium is facile and efficient. Keywords:hydrogen evolution reaction;NiO;electrocatalysts;nanosphere

This study used excess sludge from urban wastewater treatment plants as a raw material to prepare sludge-based activated carbon (SAC) via ZnCl2 activation and high-temperature carbonization. The structure of SAC was characterized using XRD, SEM, and FTIR, and the adsorption performance of SAC toward Cr(VI) in wastewater was systematically investigated. The results showed that, under the conditions of a ZnCl2 activator concentration of 1 mol/L, a carbonization temperature of 550°C, and a heating rate of 10 ℃/min, the prepared SAC had a maximum adsorption capacity of 57.90 mg/g for Cr(VI) in wastewater, and could achieve 100% removal of Cr(VI) at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L. The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that chemical adsorption was the rate-controlling step, and Cr(VI) was mainly adsorbed in a uniform monolayer on the SAC surface. This study provides a feasible technical route for sludge resource utilization and Cr(VI) wastewater treatment.Implications:In this study, activated carbon was prepared using sludge as the raw material, realizing the reduction and resource utilization of sludge. This method not only solves the problems of land occupation and secondary pollution caused by sludge storage and landfilling, but also reduces the preparation cost of activated carbon, which conforms to the environmental protection policies for solid waste recycling. To address the pollution of highly toxic Cr(VI) in wastewater, the as-prepared sludge-based activated carbon shows excellent adsorption performance, which can efficiently remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution and significantly reduce the biological toxicity and environmental risks of heavy metals. This work constructs a cyclic utilization pathway of “sludge disposal–functional carbon preparation–heavy metal wastewater treatment,” providing an economically feasible technical scheme for the treatment of chromium-containing industrial wastewater. It has important theoretical value and practical application significance for promoting solid waste resource utilization, improving the water ecological environment and ensuring water environmental safety.
