Dual-functionalized Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂ for ultrafast and ultrahigh-capacity capture of Cd(II) and Pb(II) with multiscale mechanistic insights

Kai Wang,Chunqing Niu,Xin Zhang,Nuo Liu,Zhengxin Luo,Chunhong Zhu,Jian Shi

A mixed mono−/multidentate ligand strategy engineered defective MIL-100(Fe). • Coordinatively unsaturated Fe O sites promoted rapid heavy-metal adsorption. • Defect engineering integrated Fe O exposure and amino functionalization. • Synergistic Fe–O/NH₂/COO − sites enhanced adsorption kinetics and affinity. • A flexible MOF membrane achieved efficient and recyclable heavy-metal removal. To address Pb(II) and Cd(II)-dominated heavy-metal contamination in water, a series of amino-bearing, defect-regulated Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were constructed using ligand engineering. In the synthetic design, the tritopic linker 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H₃BTC) was coupled with the monotopic modulator p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), enabling the simultaneous generation of coordinatively unsaturated Fe O centers and exposed -NH₂ functionalities within the framework. This dual functionalization substantially strengthened the affinity of the adsorbent for divalent heavy-metal ions. Among the obtained samples, 6 mg Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂, corresponding to an H₃BTC/PABA feed ratio of 8:2, delivered the best adsorption performance under the conditions of 25 °C, pH 5, and an initial concentration of 150 mg/L, with maximum uptake values of 732.03 mg/g for Pb(II) and 654.05 mg/g for Cd(II), and equilibrium was achieved within 15 min. Kinetic and equilibrium analyses followed the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm, respectively, indicating that monolayer chemisorption dominates the capture process. To improve the handling, recovery, and reusability of Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂ particles, they were incorporated into a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous matrix via electrospinning to obtain a Fe(BTC)₈(PABA)₂@PAN membrane. The membrane retained good structural stability and pronounced selectivity, particularly for Pb(II), in both binary-ion media and multi-cationic aqueous systems. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, more than 83% of the initial adsorption capacity was retained. DFT (Density functional theory) calculations further supported the experimental observations, showing that the adsorption originated from cooperative coordination among unsaturated Fe-O-M sites, carboxyl oxygen atoms, and amino nitrogen atoms. Therefore this study provides a defect- and functionality-coupled strategy for developing MOF-based adsorbents with both rapid uptake and high capacity for heavy-metal remediation. A chiral electrochemical sensor based on β-CD/Ce-doped Cu-MOF/MWCNTs-COOH for enantioselective recognition and detection of levofloxacin

Nanke Ma,Anqi Wei,Huiling Peng,Lixia Xie,Yuan Jin,Zhengzhi Yin,Guangli Li

Background Chirality plays a critical role in drug efficacy and environmental safety. The antibacterial activity of ofloxacin resides almost exclusively in its S-enantiomer (levofloxacin, LEV), while the R-enantiomer contributes little to therapeutic effects but may pose unnecessary risks. Rapid and reliable methods for enantioselective determination of ofloxacin enantiomers are therefore essential for pharmaceutical quality control, food safety monitoring, and environmental analysis. However, existing electrochemical sensors often suffer from limited enantioselectivity and insufficient sensitivity. To address this challenge, a novel enantioselective electrochemical platform is developed. Results A β-cyclodextrin/cerium-doped copper metal-organic framework/carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube composite (β-CD/Ce-doped Cu-MOF/MWCNTs-COOH) was fabricated on a glassy carbon electrode. The sensor achieves discrimination of ofloxacin enantiomers with an I L /I D ratio of 3.39. DFT calculations at pH 4.0 reveal that β-CD binds LEV with higher adsorption energy (−63.8 kJ/mol) than DEX (−58.3 kJ/mol), confirming the superior response for LEV originates from stereospecific inclusion. Quantitative analysis of LEV shows two linear ranges (0.03–1 μM and 1–10 μM) with a low detection limit of 0.01 μM. The sensor also enables accurate determination of LEV percentage in enantiomer mixtures across 0–100%. Excellent selectivity against common interferents, good reproducibility (RSD = 0.98%), repeatability (RSD = 1.26%), and long-term stability (95.2% retention after 21 days) are demonstrated. Practical applicability is validated by detecting LEV in commercial eye drops, honey, and tap water with satisfactory recoveries (96.0–108.0%). Significance and novelty This work presents the first application of Ce-doped Cu-MOF/β-CD/MWCNTs-COOH composites for the enantioselective electrochemical sensing of ofloxacin, a chiral fluoroquinolone antibiotic. The synergistic combination of high conductivity, abundant catalytic sites, and stereospecific host-guest recognition provides a generalizable strategy for high-performance enantioselective sensing, with promising applications in pharmaceutical, food, and environmental analysis.

Syntheses, crystal structures, aggregation-induced emissions and anticancer activities of two Cd(II) complexes with one novel indole–pyridine Schiff base

Wen Su,Ying-Qin Wei,Jianbin Chen,Xue-Jie Tan

A novel asymmetrical bis-Schiff base, (E)-3-(((di(pyridin-2-yl)methylene)hydrazono)methyl)-1-methyl-1H-indole (3DM), incorporating both pyridine and indole units, was synthesized and structurally characterized alongside its two cadmium(II) complexes (3DMCd, p-3DMCd). Comprehensive spectroscopic characterization (elemental analysis, HRMS, NMR, fluorescence) was performed. Both cadmium(II) complexes exhibit visible fluorescence, and p-3DMCd in particular displays intense yellow emission readily observable to the naked eye, indicating its potential as a novel aggregation-induced emissive material. Cytotoxicity assays conducted against A375, A549, and HeLa cancer cell lines, as well as normal HFF-1 fibroblasts, show that the free ligand 3DM is minimally toxic, whereas both cadmium(II) complexes selectively inhibit tumor cell proliferation and display markedly lower toxicity toward normal cells relative to CdCl2. In HeLa cells specifically, both 3DMCd and p-3DMCd exhibit substantially higher cytotoxicity than CdCl2, while maintaining significantly reduced toxicity toward normal cells. These results highlight the potential role of 3DM as a detoxifying ligand and support the promise of its cadmium(II) complexes as low-toxicity, metal-based candidates for anticervical cancer therapy. Given the established significance of DNA in the mechanism of action of metal-based drugs, docking studies were conducted against a DNA target to elucidate the structural basis for the differential potencies exhibited by the three compounds.

A novel ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor based on βcyclodextrinylated graphene and Fc/β-CD host-guest recognition for ultrasensitive detection of Zearalenone

Yao Tian,Mengsi Liang,Yongdong Wei,Yuxin Wang,Ning-Bo Li,Yaoyong Wang

Zearalenone (ZEN) is a carcinogenic mycotoxin commonly found in grains, cereals, and dairy products, posing cancer risks to humans and animals. Chronic high-dose ZEN exposure can cause liver disease, immunosuppression, kidney damage, and tumorigenesis. Sensitive and efficient ZEN detection is therefore essential for protecting human and animal health. To meet the need for sensitive, selective, and low-cost mycotoxin sensors in real food samples, we developed a novel ratiometric electrochemical aptamer sensor for ZEN detection. The sensor design utilizes β-cyclodextrin-functionalized graphene (CG) to effectively enhance electron transfer efficiency, combined with host–guest recognition between ferrocene (Fc) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), as well as Au-S covalent bonding. The 5′-SH and 3′-MB-modified dual-labeled ZEN aptamer (MB-Apt-SH) was immobilized via β-CD/Fc inclusion, with signal amplified by AuNPs binding to -SH. Without ZEN, the aptamer stays on the electrode, giving high IMB and low IFc. With ZEN, it binds the target, pulling it away. Adding Fc-COOH fills the β-CD cavities, increasing IFc and decreasing IMB, thus raising the IFc/IMB ratio proportionally to ZEN concentration. The sensor exhibits a wide linear range from 1 pg/mL to 1000 ng/mL, with a detection limit of 0.4344 pg/mL. Furthermore, the method was successfully applied to the determination of ZEN in wine samples, yielding recovery rates between 94.00% and 104.60%, demonstrating excellent accuracy and applicability. These results indicate that the MCH/AuNPs/SH-Apt-MB/CG/GCE platform is a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensor for ZEN detection.

Sensitive and visual detection of sulfonamides using γ-CD-MOF@Eu-MOF fluorescence sensor assisted by smartphone and machine learning algorithm

Mingsha Jie,Amei Zhu,Zhendong Liu,Junguang Li,Zeyu Xu,Xiaoyue Yue,Yanhong Bai

γ-CD-MOF@Eu-MOF flower-like probe synthesized for sensitive sulfonamides detection. • Paper-based sensor enables portable, visual on-site testing via smartphone imaging. • Machine learning algorithm boosts detection speed and reliability for quantitation. • The detection limit of the γ-CD-MOF@Eu-MOF for SAs is as low as 25.5 nmol/L. The protection of human health and the guarantee of food safety necessitate rapid and precise identification of sulfonamides (SAs) residues in food. Herein, we propose a fluorescence sensor based on γ-CD-MOF@Eu-MOF, which is used for quantitative and visual detection of SAs. The γ-CD-MOF@Eu-MOF exhibits high selectivity toward SAs, with detection limits for sulfamerazine (SMR), sulfamethazine (SM 2 ), and sulfamethoxydiazine (SMD) as low as 25.5 nmol/L, 36.7 nmol/L, and 39.8 nmol/L, respectively. The fluorescent probes were immobilized on paper substrates to construct a paper-based sensor, which was combined with a smartphone-assisted machine learning algorithm to enable high-throughput, intelligent, and rapid detection of SAs. After optimizing the constructed prediction model, the coefficient of determination can reach 0.99, indicating the accuracy and applicability of the model. Overall, this sensor exhibits excellent stability, sensitivity, and specificity, providing a practical approach for the intelligent, rapid, and high-throughput on-site visual detection of SAs. Simultaneous remediation of Cd and As co-contaminated soil by microbial-induced carbonate precipitation technologies: evidence from laboratory and field studies

Caiyun Fei,Mengmeng Zhu,Xiazhen Gan,Rong Zhang,Rui Liang,Weihua Peng,Xianjin Tang,Wenling Ye

The co-contamination of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in agricultural soils threatens ecosystem safety and human health via food crop accumulation. However, simultaneous remediation of Cd and As remains challenging due to their opposing chemical behaviors. Microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a promising technology for heavy metal remediation. In this study, we developed a novel bioremediation strategy by employing newly isolated Rummelibacillus sp. (ANY-1) and Rummelibacillus pycnus (ANY-2) for simultaneous immobilization of Cd and As via MICP. This study systematically investigated and compared the efficacy of ANY-1, ANY-2, and the model strain Sporosarcina pasteurii in immobilizing Cd and As in both aqueous solution and soil. Results revealed that ANY-1, ANY-2 could not only efficiently remove Cd(II) from co-contaminated aqueous solution (75.08%-93.13%), but also achieve considerable removal of As(III) (16.74%-37.32%). In soil incubation MICP remediation resulted in 47.26%-64.09% and 8.12%-25.74% decline in available Cd and As contents, respectively. XRD and FTIR analyses confirmed that the immobilization of Cd(II) and As(III) by the three strains occurred not only via co-precipitation with CaCO₃ but also through mineralization, forming (Ca₀.₆₇, Cd₀.₃₃)CO₃ and Ca₅(HAsO₄)₂(AsO₄)₂·5H₂O. Biomineralization induced by ANY-1 and ANY-2 upregulated soil urease gene and without negative impacts on soil bacterial communities. Further field experiment demonstrated that ANY-1 can effectively reduce the accumulation of Cd(63.4%) and As(24.4%) in rice grains, without compromising yield. Our findings highlight the potential of MICP as an eco-friendly and effective strategy for mitigating the combined ecological and health risks posed by Cd and As co-contamination in soil.

Chiral electrokinetic chromatography using dual pseudo-stationary phases: SBE-β-CD with hydrophobic (deep) eutectic solvents versus micelles and ionic liquids

Song Xue,Yu Xu,Sihui Ding,Haoxiang Meng,Xiaodong Sun,Qi Zhang

Two hydrophobic (deep) eutectic solvents (H(D)ESs), menthol:octanoic acid (Men:OctA) and menthol:trioctylphosphine oxide (Men:TOPO), were prepared, characterized, and then employed for the first time in combination with sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) for chiral separations in capillary electrokinetic chromatography (EKC). The “H(D)ES + SBE-β-CD” dual pseudo-stationary phase (PSP) systems yielded not only enhanced enantioselectivities, but also accelerated migrations of primaquine and chlorpheniramine, two drugs that cannot be resolved using the single SBE-β-CD system. The enhancement originated from the combined effects of stereoselective complexation and hydrophobic partitioning involving the H(D)ES phase, which moved faster than the anionic CD phase under the separation conditions. The best results in terms of enantioresolution and migration time were obtained using a 20 mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.0) containing 2.0 % SBE-β-CD and 0.2 % Men:OctA at an applied voltage of 15 kV. We further compared the chiral EKC performance of the H(D)ESs with a series of conventional PSPs, including three micelles (Tween-20, Brij-35, SDS) and three ionic liquids (ILs). The results showed that none of these modifiers could achieve comparable EKC performance, suggesting that in certain cases, H(D)ESs could be a superior alternative to traditional modifiers for chiral EKC separations.

Oxygen vacancies and CDs synergistically mediated CD/TiO2 composite materials: investigation of electronic energy band structure modulation, photocatalytic performances, and mechanisms

Dahui Feng,Han Zhao,Yanhua Song,Ruyan Xie,Xiaozhen Zhang,Shuzhe Zhang,Peng Chen,Haifeng Zou

Visible light-driven carbon dot/defect titanium dioxide (CDT) nanocomposites were synthesized utilizing a straightforward solvothermal in conjunction with a wet chemical method. The CDT demonstrated a markedly enhanced capability for dye degradation under visible light, achieving a catalytic activity of up to 0.2485 min−1 for a 20 mg L−1 rhodamine B (RhB) solution, which is 21.6 times greater than that of commercial TiO2 (P25). The observed enhancement in visible light photocatalytic activity is attributed to the synergistic effects of oxygen vacancies and carbon dots (CDs), which synergistically improved the CDT's response to visible light and mitigated charge carrier recombination. The defects induced by oxygen vacancies function as electron capture centers, optimizing the bandgap structure and effectively facilitating the separation of electrons and holes. Meanwhile, the loading of CDs effectively modulated the concentration of oxygen vacancies, significantly enhancing the carrier separation efficiency and migration rate of the composites. Moreover, under various environmental conditions and across multiple cycles, the material consistently exhibited commendable degradation efficiency, high catalytic activity, cycling stability, and robust resistance to environmental interference in the degradation of RhB. Notably, free radical capture experiments indicated that the primary active species in the photodegradation process transitioned from superoxide radicals (˙O2−) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) to superoxide radicals (˙O2−) and holes (h+), thereby confirming the existence of a type II heterojunction at the interface between the CDs and TiO2, and proposing a plausible photocatalytic mechanism. This study presents an effective, environmentally friendly, and convenient methodology for the preparation of efficient photocatalytic composites characterized by defects and heterojunctions, thereby significantly advancing the research and application of catalysts for the removal of recalcitrant organic pollutants under visible light.

Individual and Simultaneous Voltammetric Determination of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) Applying Amino Functionalized Fe3O4@Carbon Microspheres Modified Electrode

Fan Bai,Xinhao Zhang,Xinmei Hou,Huijuan Liu,Junhong Chen,Tao Yang

Amino-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 @carbon microspheres (NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C) were prepared and the electrochemical sensor was constructed using NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) to determine toxic heavy metals in aqueous solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the structure and phase of NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicate that NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified GCE possesses large active area and excellent electron transfer. Under optimized electrochemical condition, Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) were determined using NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified GCE. The electrode through amino functionalization exhibits higher sensitivity and lower detection limit toward Cd(II) and Cu(II) due to the acid-base pairing interaction between the electron-rich −NH 2 ligand and the electron-deficient heavy metal ions. Compared with other similar results reported in the literature, the NH 2 −Fe 3 O 4 @C modified electrode exhibits wider linear response range while with comparable lower detection limit. It also exhibits excellent stability, reproducibility and anti-interference ability.

Innovative application of recyclable magnetic LDO beads for enhancing the remediation of Cd and Pb contamination and the humification during composting

Hongjuan Jiang,Zhigang Yi,Yaoning Chen,Yuanping Li,Mengyang Zhao,Jun Wang,Yihuan Liu,Xuyang Jia,Mengwei Luo,Yaoqin Nie,Nianping Chi

This study developed recyclable magnetic layered double oxide beads (Mag-LDO) for composting with heavy metal-contaminated soil and agricultural waste, aiming to reduce heavy metals (HMs) concentration and bioavailable forms, enhance humification, and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Results showed that a 5 % addition of Mag-LDO increased humic acid (HA) formation by 16.02 % and significantly reduced total Cd and Pb by 18.38 % and 21.93 %, respectively, compared to the control group. Moreover, it effectively reduced BF-Cd and BF-Pb by 16.31 % and 10.37 %, respectively. These results demonstrated its potential for enhancing humification and remediating HM-contaminated soil. The analysis of microbial community and Mantel-test showed that Mag-LDO facilitated the formation of HA mainly by modulating the microbial community. Meantime, Mag-LDO not only adsorbed Pb and Cd via ion exchange and precipitation processes to reduce the mobile forms of these metals, but also enhanced the stabilized state of HMs through increasing HA in compost and proliferating Bacillus and Pseudomonas . Furthermore, recovering the Mag-LDO adsorbed HMs could decrease the total HM content in the compost. These findings contribute to advancing new perspectives for the HMs removal and the promotion of humification during composting.

Engineering stable cd-based metal-organic framework photocatalysts via ligand pre-metallization and polynuclear clusters: enhanced charge separation for ciprofloxacin degradation

Xiao-Huan Liang,Yuan Chen,Ao-Gang Liu,Ting Zhu,Zi-Tong Chen,Hui-Xin Xia,Miao Chen,Bao Li

To address environmental remediation challenges from ciprofloxacin (CIP), this study pioneers a ligand pre-metallization strategy diverging fundamentally from conventional post-synthetic approaches. By pre-constructing Fe-N 4 coordination in Fe(III) meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine chloride (H 4 TCPP(Fe)) ligands before assembly with Cd 5 polynuclear clusters, a stable three-dimensional Fe 3+ -doped Cd-TCPP metal-organic framework (MOF) was engineered, overcoming pore collapse limitations in conventional porphyrinic MOFs. This coordination engineering enables triple synergistic mechanisms: (1) Metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT)-enhanced light absorption, (2) built-in electric fields at FeN 4 -Cd 5 heterojunctions reducing charge-transfer resistance, and (3) high-density active sites accelerating hydroxyl radical ( • OH) production. The optimized system achieves near-complete CIP degradation within 25 min (maximum kinetic constant ( k ) = 0.40 min −1 ) under 10 W visible light and ultrafast solar degradation (99.2 % removal in 2.5 min, k  = 1.92 min −1 ), surpassing state-of-the-art Fe-TCPP ( k  = 0.23 min −1 ). Mechanistic analysis via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) revealed piperazine cleavage/defluorination pathways, while ecological structure activity relationships (ECOSAR) verified reduced aquatic toxicity of intermediates. This work establishes a coordination-directed paradigm for precision MOF electronic engineering, offering a scalable solution for antibiotic remediation.

A diamond/graphite nanoplatelets electrode for anodic stripping voltammetric trace determination of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II)

Zhaofeng Zhai,Nan Huang,Hao Zhuang,Lusheng Liu,Bing Yang,Chun Wang,Zhigang Gai,Fengxiang Guo,Zhengjun Li,Xin Jiang

A platform for the determination of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) has been proposed based on a novel diamond/graphite (D/G) nanoplatelets film electrode using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry method. The microstructure and the composition of the film were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The D/G nanoplatelets structure with two-dimensional diamond nanoplatelet as the stem and highly conducting graphite layers as shells exhibits large specific surface and great electrical conductivity, significantly enhancing the electron transport in the electrochemical reaction. Under the optimum conditions, wide linear ranges and high sensitivity were achieved. In the typical detection process, two linear working ranges were obtained due to the incomplete anodic removal and the limits of detection (LODs) were estimated to be 1.72 μg L −1 , 0.47 μg L −1 , 4.86 μg L −1 and 0.45 μg L −1 for Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. The simultaneous detections also verify the superior analytical performance with linear ranges from 10 μg L −1 to 250 μg L −1 and low LODs. Herein, we present a novel diamond/graphite nanoplatelets electrode without any modification/functionalization for the sensitive detection of trace heavy metal ions .
