Effective and affordable photocatalysts play an important role in the cost reduction of solar hydrogen production through photocatalytic water splitting. In this research, a Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ modified carbon hydrogen evolution cocatalyst (ZnNi-C) were synthesized and immobilized onto the surface of CdS (CdS@ZnNi-C) for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE). The preparation used an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium (EDTA)-assisted method. The hydrogen evolution rate and apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) at 420 nm for an optimized CdS@ZnNi-C photocatalyst are15.7 mmol/h/g and 31.4 %, respectively. The rate is 2.4 times and 3.7 times greater than those of Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ modified carbon cocatalysts (Zn-C) and (Ni-C) on CdS (CdS@Zn-C) and (CdS@Ni-C), respectively. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the elevated catalytic performance of CdS@ZnNi-C is due to the co-anchored Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ in carbon layers that lead to a favorable Gibbs free energy (ΔG H *) for hydrogen evolution. This approach is valuable for the design of stable and efficient photocatalysts for renewable hydrogen production.

Obtaining highly active and selective target products is both promising and challenging, and can be achieved by regulating the adsorption and desorption energy of reaction intermediates, as well as the transfer of electrons under visible light. Herein, an efficient CNGA/CdS photocatalyst based on ultrathin porous nitrogen vacancies carbon nitride (CNGA) nanosheets (thickness <1 nm) with CdS nanoparticles was synthesized by a facile route for visible-light photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. As a result, the rate of CO production was 32.75 μmol g −1 h −1 , which was 17.24 and 32.75 times that of CN and CdS under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm) without sacrificial agents and cocatalysts . Importantly, introducing CdS nanoparticles into CNGA could improve the selectivity of CO 2 to CO by nearly 100% (yield-based selectivity). Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism was explored by in-situ FTIR spectra and DFT calculations, and the results presented that the formation of heterostructures facilitated the generated *CO groups to modulate the reaction pathway of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. This work is expected provide a reference for the design of photocatalysts for photoreduction CO 2 with accurate products under visible light.

ABSTRACT The production of renewable fossil fuels such as CH 4 and CO by photocatalytic CO 2 reduction has attracted more and more attention. However, single photocatalyst is less efficient for photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 due to the fast recombination of photogenerated electron pairs. Herein, we successfully prepare CdS-Ag 2 S composite by assembling the Ag 2 S QDs cocatalyst on the surface of CdS nanosheet-assembled flower through oil-bath solvothermal method . This composite is prepared through a simple self-assembly strategy using cadmium chloride, ammonia and thiourea as precursors of the CdS nanosheet-assembled flower and silver nitrate and 3-mercaptopropionic acid as the precursors of Ag 2 S QDs. The average diameter of Ag 2 S QDs is apparently 6.0 nm. The light absorption edge of the composite is at around 560 nm, with the corresponding band gap at 2.14 eV. The CdS-Ag 2 S QDs composite with 5 wt% Ag 2 S QDs loaded achieves CO evolution rate of 16.6 μmol•g −1 •h −1 without noble-metal cocatalysts. This strengthened photocatalytic performance and photocatalytic stability were attributed to the energy band broadening of Ag 2 S QDs caused by quantum size effect and the large specific surface area due to the assembled flower. The mechanism underlying the enhanced photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity is further proposed. This study demonstrates that semiconductor-based quantum dots are strong candidates for excellent cocatalysts in photocatalysis .

Piezocatalysis converting mechanical energy into chemical energy is deemed as an emerging technology for degradation of organic pollutants in water or air. In this work, BiFeO 3 @CdS nanofibers with heterostructure and enhanced piezoelectric response were prepared for efficient piezocatalytic degradation of organics in water. The optimal BiFeO 3 @CdS-10% achieved nearly complete removal of bisphenol A (BPA) within 60 min with the degradation rate constant of 0.098 min −1 , which was 9.4 and 4.9 times higher than that of pristine BiFeO 3 and CdS, respectively. The excellent piezocatalytic activity of the composite can be attributed to the construction of heterojunction and the enhanced piezoelectric response from the synergistic effect of the two piezoelectric components, which can accelerate the internal transfer of free carriers. It gives an insight into the feasible construction of efficient piezocatalysts and opens up a new way for BiFeO 3 -based piezoelectric materials to be utilized in purification of wastewater.

Ni-doped cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanospheres with nickel phosphide (Ni 2 P) loading (Ni 2 P@CdS-Ni) were successfully prepared via the two-step thermal treatment growth and chemical reduction method in this work. Firstly, the thermal treatment method was applied to introduce the Ni 2+ into the lattice of CdS and induce the Ni-precursor loaded on surface of the CdS intimately. Then, the Ni-precursor was reduced into Ni(OH) 2 by using the chemical reduction process. Furthermore, the Ni 2 P were loaded on the CdS via the second thermal phosphorization reaction. The loaded Ni 2 P would evidently accelerate the transfer of photo-generated electrons between CdS-Ni and Ni 2 P and meanwhile effectively decrease the charges recombination. Moreover, the results of UV–vis DR spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that Ni cations doped in the lattice of CdS lead to a doping level at the bottom of the conduct band, which narrowed the bandgap. The work function indicated that doped Ni 2+ helps to enhance the migration and separation of the photo-induced charge. Based on the synergistic effects, 3.7% Ni 2 P@CdS-Ni-3 presented a relatively high hydrogen evolution rate of 176.6 mmol h −1 g −1 under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), which is 63 times of the common CdS.

In recent years, there have been many studies on photocatalytic water splitting, but there are still few high-efficiency photocatalysts for photocatalytic seawater splitting. In this study, a series of hollow Co sulphide-supported CdS catalyst (H–CoS/CdS) composite photocatalysts were prepared by loading CdS onto the surface of H–CoS, which can be used for efficient H 2 production in pure water and simulated seawater. The heterojunction H–CoS/CdS exhibited H 2 production of 572.4 μmol g −1 (4 h) from simulated seawater, which is 97.7 and 2.96 times those of H–CoS and CdS, respectively. The h-CoS cocatalyst extended the light absorption range of CdS, improved the chemical stability, and significantly enhances the charge separation efficiency. This study provides guidance for the reasonable design of a photocatalytic seawater-based H 2 production catalyst with high efficiency and low cost.

Solar-powered photocatalytic hydrogen production from water using semiconductors provides an eco-friendly and promising approach for converting solar energy into hydrogen fuel. Bulk semiconductors generally suffer from certain limitations, such as poor visible-light utilization, rapid recombination of charge carriers, and low catalytic capability. The key challenge is to develop visible-light-driven heterojunction photocatalysts that are stable and highly active during the water splitting process. Here, we demonstrate the integration of one-dimensional (1D) CdS nanorods with two-dimensional (2D) 1T-phase dominated WS 2 nanosheets for constructing mixed-dimensional heterojunctions for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The resulting 1D CdS/2D WS 2 nanoheterojunction exhibited an ultrahigh hydrogen-evolution activity of ∼70 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 that was visible to the naked eye, as well as long-term stability under visible light illumination. The results reveal that the synergy of hybrid nanoarchitectures and intimate interfacial contact between the 1D CdS nanorods and 1T-phase dominated 2D WS 2 nanosheets facilitates charge carrier transport, which is beneficial for achieving superior hydrogen evolution.

Upconversion nanoparticles/semiconductor nanocomposites have received intense interest in the past two decades. In this work, we demonstrated a facile electrospinning technique and a hydrothermal-assisted crystallization process to fabricate upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)/CdS/TiO2 nanofibers successfully. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, Mw ≈ 1 300 000) has been selected as the polymer matrix and tetrabutyl titanate (TBT, 99.0%) was used as the titanium source. The morphologies and phase of the as-prepared samples have been studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Experimental results revealed that the polymer matrix (PVP) can be dissolved and removed completely under hydrothermal conditions. In addition, the crystalline phase of TiO2 was also achieved under hydrothermal conditions. The as-prepared composite nanofibers are hundreds of micrometers in length and 650 nm in diameter and show weak upconversion fluorescence under the excitation of near-infrared light (980 nm), indicating the high energy transfer efficiency between upconversion nanoparticles and semiconductors. As expected, the UCNPs/CdS/TiO2 nanofibers may have enhanced photocatalytic performance as they make full use of solar energy using UCNPs as nanotransducers for infrared (IR) light.

Coordination CIS-EDTA-CdS S-scheme heterojunction for PEC cathodic protection. • EDTA: bifunctional layer, passivating defects and modulating band positions. • S-scheme charge transfer enhances carrier separation and suppresses recombination. The development of photoanodes combining broad-spectrum light response with efficient charge separation is crucial for photoelectrochemical cathodic protection. In this work, an atomic-scale S-scheme heterojunction was constructed between narrow-bandgap CuInS₂ (CIS) and CdS via coordination-bond interface engineering. Specifically, EDTA was first employed as a small-molecule bridging agent to passivate dangling bonds and surface defects on CIS through coordination interactions. Subsequently, CdS was grown in situ onto the CIS-EDTA surface, yielding the CIS-EDTA-CdS composite photoanode. Results demonstrate that EDTA modification not only suppresses non-radiative recombination but also directionally tailors the band structure of CIS, transforming the heterojunction from a Type-I to an S-scheme configuration. The optimized composite photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 1.3 mA·cm⁻² under light and shifts the corrosion potential of the coupled 304 stainless steel to −1.15 V (vs. NHE). Mechanistic investigations reveal that the S-scheme charge-transfer pathway promotes the recombination of conduction-band electrons from CdS with valence-band holes from CIS-EDTA, while preserving the high-energy electrons on the CIS-EDTA side for effective cathodic protection. This study provides a new paradigm for the application of atomic-scale interface engineering in photoelectrochemical anticorrosion, highlighting the potential of coordination-bridge strategies in designing high-performance photoanodes. Loading a co-catalyst is an effective approach for enhancing the performance of photocatalysts . In this study, we used a novel co-catalyst, Ti 3 C 2 T x , to fabricate an efficient and cost-effective heterogeneous nanostructured catalyst based on CdS for photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting. The composite catalyst denoted as Ti 3 C 2 T x -cys-CdS-x was synthesized through via hydrothermal treatment . The heterostructure of Ti 3 C 2 T x -cys-CdS enabled the efficient separation and transfer of space charges during photocatalytic hydrogen evolution . With the aid of the l -cysteine, Ti 3 C 2 T x and CdS form a unique covalently bonded structure that generates numerous heterojunctions and reactive sites for hydrogen production . The results indicated that Ti 3 C 2 T x -cys-CdS-2 exhibits superior performance in photocatalytic hydrogen production , with a hydrogen evolution rate of 4275 μmol g −1 achieved in 2 h. This rate is 9.2 times higher than that obtained using pristine CdS as the catalyst.

The leaf-like zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) is a promising porous nanomaterial that has attracted increasing attention as an ideal host material to encapsulate functional fluorescent nanoparticles for designing fluorescent sensors. However, owing to the large particle size, gravity readily facilitates the precipitation of the ZIF-L from the aqueous solution, and thus lead to imperfect experimental results. Herein, we report a simple and rapid synthetic method which uses the polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified ZIF-L as a host to solve the precipitation problem and construct a dual-emitting system that combines its fluorescence with carbon dots (CDs). Furthermore, CDs@ZIF-L/PEI with dual-emitting centres could be utilised as a ratio fluorescence sensor to detect Hg2+ ions. The sensor exhibited excellent dispersibility and good selectivity for sensing Hg2+ ions, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 14.5 nM. Furthermore, experimental results reveal that the CDs@ZIF-L/PEI fluorescent sensor could be effectively dispersed into agarose and less polar organic solvents such as DMF, MeOH, EtOH and CH3CN, expanding the application scope of the fluorescent sensor.

CdS is a promising photocatalyst and combining MoS 2 with CdS can realize efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. However, most of the previous researches about MoS 2 /CdS composites focus on hexagonal CdS. Studies on cubic CdS are still rare due to its unstability. Thus in this paper, a ternary composite CdS-MoS 2 /C (abbreviated as CdS-MC, M = MoS 2 , C = activated carbon) was synthesized by facile in-situ liquid phase precipitation of cubic CdS on MoS 2 /C. Based on a series of characterizations, its photocatalytic hydrogen production performance was studied. Under the irradiation of a LED lamp , a high H 2 evolution activity of 879.6 μmol h −1 was achieved for the composite CdS-10%MC, which is 23.3 times that of pure CdS. In addition, its performance is much higher than that of the hexagonal CdS-MC sample (265.6 μmol/h) obtained by heat-treatment of CdS-MC at 400 °C for 1 h under N 2 atmosphere. What’s more, the stability of CdS-MC was investigated and the possible reasons for its unstability were analyzed in detail. To improve the stability, a method of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) modification was also managed. Finally, possible mechanism for the photocatalytic hydrogen production of CdS-MC was proposed.
